Failing to engage

brownhills-youth-centre-670

It’s all going on at Brownhills Activity Centre. Image from Walsall Council.

I’d just like to make a quick observation if I might, as I had very positive feedback from yesterday’s meeting of Brownhills Neighbourhood Watch at the Activity Centre which I’m told was informative, well attended, friendly and well managed – but just one thing seems to have cast a shadow on the evening.

I’m hearing that members of the youth club attempted to attend, and were turned away, being told it was a meeting for ‘adults only’ – which is sad, as they’re a bright bunch with positive ideas and stuff to say about their community.

Since youngsters are statistically more likely to be victims of crime – and also often get tarred with the same brush as a minority of their criminal peers – it’s to my frustration that the ‘adults’ should reject attempts by youngsters to get involved in community matters that most certainly do concern them.

It seems to me that if as a community we are to build bridges and solve the issues that affect all decent folk here of whatever age or grouping then we really need to engage with each other.

After all, how keen are kids going to be to try to get involved in future, or to help with issues when called upon if their efforts to get involved previously have been spurned?

Think on folks. This community is about everyone in it, and that includes the youth who are fed up with the crime too. I appeal to those who would bar the kids in future to please think again and build bridges, not burn them.

Cheers.
Bob

Wyre Close house fire appeal – it’s all systems go!

untitled-9

Wyre Close is just off Coppice Lane, Walsall Wood. imagery from Apple Maps.

You may recall the unfortunate house fire in Wyre Close, Walsall Wood last December, and the subsequent appeal to folks who could maybe donate unwanted household items when the couple found a house again.

Well, after some time in a hostel, they’ve now been offered a house and the appeal is on.

Friend of the couple affected, Abigail Claire sent me the following message to share with readers:

On 3rd December 2016, a neighbours house on Wyre Close caught fire – the couple lost absolutely everything and have been lving in a hostel ever since.

They have now been offered a house and are looking for some household items that anyone may have spare.

As you can imagine they were distraught and need an act of kindness/humanity from anyone who can help.

Lets start 2017 with compassion and neighbourly spirit. I have set up a Facebook group Wyre Close house fire (click here) for anyone to add themselves to if they have anything they can offer.

Thank you

Thanks to Abigail for a true act of community spirit and warm-heartedness, and of course to all those who offer to help or donate.  This is true humanity.

Concerned about local crime issues? Meeting tonight in Brownhills!

It’s all going on at Brownhills Activity Centre. Image from Walsall Council.

In light of recent events, there’s a very interesting meeting taking place at 7pm this evening Monday, 16th January 2017 – that of Brownhills Neighbourhood Watch.

With recent concerns about local crime – particularly burglaries on the High Street and ongoing antisocial behaviour issues – this could be your chance to get your voice heard. If you’ve been unhappy with recent police performance, this would be a good forum at which to raise that, or any other related issue you may have.

Kevin Pitt, the Walsall Police Partnerships Officer, sent out the following:

The Friends of Brownhills Common – January 2017 meeting tonight!

38703574

We all love the common, but its management has proven controversial. Why not pop along to the meeting and discuss the issues with the experts and other users?

Here’s one for people interested in the issues surrounding Brownhills Common – theres a meeting tonight, Monday 16th January 2017 of the Freinds of Brownhills Common group at the Environmental Depot, 200 Pelsall Road, Brownhills – WS8 7EN – please meet in the reception by 7:00pm.

Brownhills Common needs a good active friends group and this is your opportunity to join in and have your say in shaping the future management of the open space we all love.

The meeting is also open to the general public who may not wish to join the friends group, but are encouraged to attend and hear what everyone has to say.

If you want to know what the group is about, you can read the minutes of their last meeting here.

It’s important that we recognise what a valuable, fragile and important habitat Brownhills Common is, and why it requires careful and measured stewardship.

If you’ve only heard the alarmists, it’s a good opportunity to go out and meet, talk and listen to people who understand the issues and want to preserve the wildlife, and to help shape the future of Brownhills’ greatest asset.

Looking for Angela Lloyd, please…

Do you know Angela Lloyd, who used to live in Shire Oak? Image supplied by Joan Johnson, nee Hampton.

I had an interesting enquiry a few days ago, and it would be nice if possible to reunite two old pals after a long period lost.

John Johnson, nee Hampton wrote:

Hi Bob.

I don’t know if you can help. I had a friend called Angela Lloyd who lived on Shire Oak Hill.

Their house would have been where the new houses were built a few years ago. I met her when I was at Kings Hill School Lichfield.

Shire Oak and Kingshill went to Teddersley Park camping in the late fifties early sixties. I wrote to her for a few years, then lost touch. I wondered if you remember her at all.

My maiden name was Hampton. Joan Hampton.

Thankyou.

Tanks to Joan for the enquiry, and if you can help please contact Joan via Facebook here, or alternatively, comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers!

So, what’s with the dog, lads?

s-l1600-1

A remarkable image. For starters, four tough looking lads with a distinctly not-tough looking dog. Why were these lads photographed for a card, and is this in fact Brownhills? From a car for sale on eBay by seller ‘Interestingpostcards’. Click for a larger version.

Here’s another in the occasional series of interesting local postcards for sale on eBay that raise more questions than they answer – the above image is described as ‘SUPER-1916-EDWARDIAN-MEN-IN-CAPS-BROWNHILLS-RP-PHOTO-VINTAGE-POSTCARD’ – which seems at least to be accurate.

I’m intrigued as I’d love to know if the picture really is local, and if so where was it taken and who’s in it – and considering the no-nonsense appearance of the gentlemen in the image, that seems like a bit of a weedy dog. What’s that about, then?

Notice also the two ‘ghosts’ – someone is at the window behind, and to the right someone seems to be disappearing into the doorway.

I have a theory, but won’t share it yet. I want to see what you guys think…

If you like this, you can buy it from dseller ‘Interestingpostcards’ here.

s-l1600-3

The flip side of the above card. Usual help translating appreciated, please. Click for a larger version.

Also, it’s not new images, but they are in good quality on a card whose design I’ve not seen before – the following card from seller ‘mica’ here. In particular, I’ve not seen the canal image in such clarity before.

Anything to add? Please feel free. Comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers!

Wood fight hard but can’t trip up Tividale

Pictures and captions kindly supplied by David Evans

Walsall Wood FC hosted Tividale yesterday afternoon (Saturday, 14th January 2017) and despite a hard fought match, emerged the losers.

Bill Shaw was there as ever:

Hiya Bob,

It’s now three defeats in a row, all by two goal margins, but this could have been a different story, keeper Luke Kriskinans was man of the match with a string of fine saves to deny Drew Aiton, Joey Butlin and Liam Molesworth in particular.

Wood made five changes from the game on Tuesday night and with just a little more composure in front of goal could have taken at least one, if not all three points.

We aren’t going to win the league, or get relegated, so it’s now a learning curve for all concerned, but rest assured things will get better between now and the 29th April as the squad gets to know each other’s play.

Walsall Wood 1 v 3 Tividale

A performance by Dale that belied their lowly league position, Wood again carved out chances but a combination of keeper Luke Kriskinans and the woodwork saw them go down to a third consecutive defeat.

The visitors had the better of the opening few minutes, on 10 Craig Stevens played a ball over the Wood defence, keeper Lewis Gwilliams quickly to the edge of the area to take the ball a split second before Chris Bladen. Three minutes later Lewis McPike fed Jacob Wedderburn wide right, he raced into the box, his low cross put behind by Adam Wood to deny Bladen.

Wood’s first effort came on 15 minutes, Drew Aiton made the left of the box and pulled the ball back into the path of Joey Butlin, he unselfishly set up Stephen Palmer, his rising drive fingertipped onto the bar and over by keeper Luke Kriskinans.  From the left wing corner Louis Harris planted a header just too high. Two minutes later Anthony Juxon collected the ball from a left wing throw, he found Drew Aiton whose low drive was pushed away by the keeper.

On 26 minutes a left wing corner to the far post was forced home by Dan Smith.  On 34 minutes a superb 60 yard crossfield ball by Darragh Bustin found Wedderburn wide right, his first time cross was bulleted home by the head of Bladen.

Wood’s reply two minutes later saw a long ball into the right of the box find Butlin who held the ball up before turning and floating a cross shot just over the far angle. A minute later a central free kick by Wood was headed down by Butlin, Harris firing first time over.

Five minutes into the second half a long ball over the top of the visitors defence was collected at pace by Liam Molesworth to hit first time too high.

Disaster for Wood on 58 minutes, Luke Wright under pressure played the ball across his own box, the wide awake Bladen intercepted the ball and gleefully made it three-nil. Seven minutes later a right wing near post free kick was headed over the angle by the impressive Wedderburn.

On 69 minutes Harris raced into the right of the box, his low drive deflected for a corner.  The corner delivered beyond the far post for Wood to power a header wide.  A minute later a low drive from Molesworth was touched around the post by Kriskinans.  The resulting corner again headed wide by Wood.  73 minutes saw a central free kick collected by Aiton, his rising drive touched over by the keeper.  From the corner the ball dropped for Harris to stab the ball wide. On 75 minutes Aiton cut inside from wide left, his far post cross just missed by Butlin and defenders sliding in to give Wood a lifeline, as the ball nestled in the corner of the net.

On 84 minutes Lewis Probert fired in a 25 yard central free kick that was dropped by Gwilliams, substitute Harvey Walker first to the ball only to hit the right hand post from six yards. Two minutes later Gwilliams mis-kicked a back pass straight to Bladen, but the keeper then redeemed himself with a brave full length save at the striker’s feet.

On 90 minutes Steven Hayles with a left wing run and cross set up Molesworth to plant a header just too high.

Wood’s frailties in front of goal were again exposed, but striker Chris Bladen showed them how it was done, throw in a superb goal-keeping performance by Luke Kriskinans and Wood were really up against it, because at the end of the day it’s goals that count.

Weather permitting its AFC Wulfrunians at the Wood on Tuesday night, (17th) followed on Saturday by Boldmere St. Michaels.

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

Walsall Wood – Gwilliams, Molesworth, Jackson, Bains, Wright, Wood, Palmer, Juxon, Butlin (captain), Aiton, Harris, Rickards, Hayles, Ricketts, Mansell, Shaw.

Tividale – Kriskinans, Wedderburn, Hill, Gardner (captain), Watts, Stevens, McPike, Probert, Bladen, Bustin, Smith, Hurdman, Grainger, Sebbah, Oliver, Walker.

As ever, thanks to Bill and David for the report – always appreciated – for The Good of the Wood!

Wax on, wax off

dscn4418

Such cute little birds. Waxwings at Silver Court, Saturday, 14th January 2017.

Having a lot of enquiries here ofver the last couple of days as to why Silver Court in Brownhills seems to be occupied by a group of predominantly older, bearded blokes in outdoor gear and armed with scopes and cameras.

There’s a simple and beautiful answer: once more a flock of waxwings have blessed us with their company, and they’ve chosen to strip the trees at the from of Silver Court of their berries.

Waxwings are about the size of,  but a tad smaller than starlings, and are predominantly grey birds with brightly coloured details. They breed and generally live in eastern Europe, but often in cold winters they come into the east of the British Isles when their numbers swamp their usual feeding grounds.

dscn4408

Birds of a feather… the flock at Silver Court today numbered between 30-40 today, and had a crowd of about 8-12 birdies showing keen interest.

These pretty creatures like berries – haws, rowan, contester and rose hips. At Silver Court they seem to be dining on some kind of ornamental berry that grows on the trees in front of the shopping parade.

These waves of unusual visitors are called ‘irruptions’ and you can read lots more about them on Chaz Mason’s wonderful blog. The birds are quite an unusual sight, but in recent winters, we’ve been blessed before in Brownhills. I’d be curious to know if there’s some kind of flock-memory of food here, or if it’s coincidental.

If you’re not reading Chaz Mason regularly, you should be. The man is a gentleman, and god-like genius of the marsh. Learned so much from his blog over the years.

Reader Marie who lives in Silver Court (who also spotted the wayward Tesco truck last

week) donated the following images to the blog, and there are lots too from others on social media.

Gallery images kindly supplied by reader Marie

It’s nice to be able to report something so pleasant for a change – and it’s nice to see Brownhills looking at it’s wildlife.

Do feel free to send me images if you’d like me to share them with readers.

Walsall Wood lose to Wolverhampton Sporting

P1000595

A loss for the wood, but onwards and upwards, hopefully.

It was a tough match at Oak park last Tuesday as Walsall Wood FC faced Wolverhampton Sporting Community FC, and sadly, the home side lost two nil.

Bill Shaw  submitted the following match report:

Hiya Bob,

Some will say justice was done, but Wood struggled to put a side out because of FA restrictions, the proof of how the new management team are doing will come when they can field their first choice team, starting with Saturday’s game at home to Tividale, followed by the visit of AFC Wulfrunians on Tuesday next.

Staffs Senior Cup
Walsall Wood 0 v 2 W’ton Sporting Community

Sporting went through to the next round and an away tie against Hednesford, Wood feeling benevolent kicked off, lost the ball and after just 22 seconds the visitors had back their lead from December’s abandoned game. A late goal wrapped the game up as Wood’s frailty in front of goal surfaced again.

It couldn’t have started worse for Wood, they kicked off lost the ball, John Letford raced clear wide left, delivered the ball to the near post for skipper Dan Westwood to open the scoring with just 22 seconds on the clock.

Shell-shocked Wood took 15 minutes to threaten the away goal, Steven Hayles got clear wide left, his cross fired just wide by Joey Butlin. It was Butlin again 10 minutes later, Ricardo Ricketts playing a ball up to him on the right edge of the box, his low drive deflected just wide.

Three minutes later Chris Rabone charged into the left of the Wood box only to drag a cross shot narrowly wide.

For the next 15 minutes both sides had half chances but couldn’t get the all-important next goal. Wood then put the visitors under intense pressure as we approached the break, Ashley Jackson cut inside from wide right and fired a cross shot just wide. Butlin raced into the left of the box, his low drive bringing a great full length save from keeper James Gettings. Drew Aiton then crossed from wide right to the far post, the ball just inches away from Leon Taylor. Finally Hayles crossed from wide left to find Aiton on the right of the box, his first time rising drive finger-tipped onto the bar by Gettings.

Five minutes into the second half Letford went on a left wing run, his near post cross hit first time by Dimitri Dunkley, keeper Lewis Gwilliams with a superb save. It was Letford again racing through the centre 10 minutes later before setting up Dunkley, he beat Gwilliams but Ricketts stopped the ball on the line, Dunkley stabbing the loose ball wide of the left hand post.

On 67 minutes a flowing right wing Wood move saw Jackson cut inside from wide right and find Butlin, his touch set up Aiton to fire first time high and wide.

With 78 minutes gone and Kyle Delaney intercepted a ball on halfway and raced for goal through the centre only to fire wide of the advancing Gwilliams and the post.

Within a minute the game was sewn up, a quick throw in by Alex Moore on the left found Chris Rabone in the left of the box, his cross cum shot deceiving Gwilliams and nestling in the far corner.

Wood kept trying to get back in the game but this wasn’t their night and the visitors progressed through to the next round at Hednesford.

It’s back to league action for Wood with four home games before they finish the month with a visit to St. Andrews of Leicester, weather permitting of course.

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

Walsall Wood – Gwilliams, Ricketts, Hayles, Mansell, L. Harris, Juxon, Taylor, H. Harris,
Butlin (captain), Aiton, Jackson, Graham, Beckett, O’Doherty, Strazzanti, Okojie.

Wolves Sporting – Gettings, Harvey, Delaney, Haynes, Vaughan, Barnes, Dunkley, Northwood, Westwood (captain), Letford, Rabone, Fuller, Moore, Franco, McErdy, Clarke.

Thanks to Bill for the report, as ever. It’s a joy and an honour to publish them here.

Pictures from the Oak Park demolition

image003

if you’re worried about the pair of socks you left in your locker, it’s a bit late now. Image kindly supplied by David Evans.

The young David Evans was yesterday a very busy chap indeed – not only did he give a very successful talk at Walsall Wood Library (which raised £40 for Macmillan by the way, so nice one and thanks for that) but he also swung past the old Oak Park Recreation Centre to take some pictures of the site as it’s being demolished.

The Recreation Centre, which was out of use after being replaced by a new state of the art facility behind, was due to be knocked down soon in any case, but a fire there last week forced the Council’s hand and men with large tools have been working there ever since.

I’ve had a few requests for pictures, so David kindly obliged. As you can see, they aren’t hanging about and the centre won’t be here much longer.

Cheers to David for making a photographic record – if you have anything to add, please do: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Scouting for assistance!

scouting

The Scouts do a whole range of great stuff, and is fin not just for the kids, but for the adult volunteers as well. Image from The Scout Association.

I have been contacted by John Currie of the 2nd Brownhills Scouts who’d like to appeal to folk who could help the group thrive and grow in the coming year.

In short, your local Scouts need you!

John wrote:

Hi Bob

It’s been a busy year at the Scout hut and we’re hoping for an even busier year in 2017.

This is where I am hoping that you can help us.

As you will be aware the scouting movement is run totally by volunteers, at Brownhills we have a great team but we really do need more volunteers across all sections to help run everything from weekly meetings to weekend camps away.

Volunteers do not need any background in scouting at all.

There are many different volunteer roles for different sections.
For example : in the Beaver section we need adult volunteers to help out on a Monday evening, this includes playing games, doing crafts, cooking, making camps and going on walks etc.

At the other end of the scale in our Explorer section we need volunteers to help with delivering an interesting programme for 14-18 year old.

Everything from xbox game nights to mountain biking, climbing, camping and mountaineering etc.

The thing is everybody has something to offer and although it can take up more time than you first expected it is extremely rewarding and great fun and you can choose how involved you want to get, from maybe an hour a week to whole weekends away.

Even if you would just like to know a little more please get in touch.

The Scouts are a fine organisation, giving young folk access to experiences and social events that are unparalleled elsewhere. I know for a fact that John and his group are a credit to our community, and they all work hard to help out at Brownhills events.

If you’ve got a young one you think would enjoy the Beavers or Scouts, why not pop along and find out what they’re about? You can find contact details for your nearest group here.

Don’t forget – chance to catch a local legend this Wednesday!

walsallwoodlibrarytalkjan2017

This is sure to be a wonderful event!

Your second chance to catch a Walsall Wood legend in action – not to be missed.

Just a quick headsup to those interested in Walsall Wood history and who are free on the Wednesday afternoon of 11th January 2017 – there’s a talk featuring the Brownhills Blog’s favourite Wood Mon™ and top contributor, the young David Evans.

Following the success of David’s recent talk at The Well on Walsall Wood which over 40 people attended, David has been learning powerpoint, furiously making slides and perusing the Les Dawson big book of bad puns for inspiration.

David is without doubt the most knowledgable historian on Walsall Wood matters and the chance to hear him speak on the matter is not to be missed – the talk starts at 2:30pm, and costs just £2.50 (including refreshments) – pre-booking is essential, as places are limited.

I wish David well – I thoroughly applaud David’s community spirit and hard work in putting on these talks. The more people who may be inspired to explore their and our collective heritage the better!

You can find out more by emailing walsallwoodlibrary@walsall.gov.uk or by calling the on 01922 655572 – of course, you can just pop in to the library on the corner of High Street and Walsall Wood.

Sandfields Pumping Station champion and public historian extraordinaire Dave Moore has been in touch to let me know that this evening (Monday 9th January 2017) there will be a public progress meeting for the Lichfield Waterworks Trust charity, formerly the Friends of Sandfields Pumping Station group.

Its worth noting The Trust have announced that they had been successful in securing the building for the future as revealed here last year, and recently gained access to the interior of the pumping station for the first time.

Note the new venue – the meeting takes place at the The Bowling Green pub, Friary Road, Lichfield from 7:30-9pm.

2017 and we are ready on the starting blocks.

Persimmon have done a great job of tidying up the pumping station and have blocked of the open widows to prevent any further bird ingress. They have also done the asbestos survey and removed much of the bird mess. They have also installed a generator for our use and several safety barriers.

The place looks better shape than it has for years, however we are still waiting for new on the handover the keys for the licence. We felt that it was in our best interests not to chase for keys late in December, as the holiday would have been time that we could not fully utilise. We have this week written to Persimmon or an update.

Safety training is ready to start on Monday 23 January at Woodhouse Farm. Philip Mantom has done an amazing job of organising the training day for 16 people at a great venue. We will be serving a home grown and cooked lunch to the team from the kitchen garden at Woodhouse Farm.

Please note the new meeting venue for the January and of course Monday will be the new meeting day. Everyone is welcome to attend, so please come along and say hello.

2017 is going to see some significant changes at Sandfields Pumping Station. We now have a window of opportunity to save for future generations one of the area’s most significant pieces of industrial heritage, and make it accessible to all.

At the end of the licence period we must produce a viable and robust business plan that clearly outlines how we will deliver an ongoing programme of funding, maintenance and renovation of the site.

As a registered charity, we must show that we are capable of managing this site as an ongoing and viable entity that is both sustainable and accessible.

As a registered charity, we must show that we have the support of the members, other stakeholders and the community in general. It is therefore it is important that we have a robust membership as a record of your support.

So please, join us now by filling in Membership Application Form by going to our membership page here. It is free to join and be a part of this incredibly exciting project.

We have incurred some considerable expenditure covering legal costs, insurance and training. We will always invest in our people, and we are planning further training days soon too. All these costs soon mount up, so if you can donate, then please visit our donation page here, any amount is helpful and well appreciated.

Do pop over to Dave Moore’s blog and check out the history of Sandfields Pumping Station, an almost forgotten gem – the group also has a Facebook page.

Dave is, of course, one of the leading lights of Lichfield Discovered, along with Kate ‘Cardigan’ Gomez from Lichfield Lore.

It’s great to see people like Dave encourage a better attitude to our historic buildings, rather than that which we seem to have here in Walsall, where we regard heritage architecture as merely ‘fuel’.

Please do attend if you’re able, it’s sure to be enlightening and educational.

2017 New Year Quiz – the results are in!

dji_0017

Keeper’s Cottage: a sad, tumbledown and fascinating feature of local bike rides since I was a kid. Image by Pete Hummings.

Hi folks – the quiz is over – sorry, I seem to have made it too hard this year.

Please, do help me here – are you all interested in the quiz again, and if so, how could I make it more fun and what would get more of you involved? These started out really popular, and this year, only a handful had a go?

I want to do stuff that involves as many of you as possible, so please do speak up.

Please let me know – we’re not short of readers, so I guess I’m pitching it wrong. Help!

Anyway, results – my congratulations to the winners, and commiserations to those who lost, but thanks – you’ve been great sports:

Lynn won part one, here with 22 points. Lynn is brilliant at this, and maintains her crown from last year.

Andy Dennis got 1 point.

I’m going to give Helen a spot prize of a book for this answer, which was clever and amused me – see here – even though it wasn’t what I was looking for. I always stop for amphibians.

Two questions in part one remained unanswered, 1 and 13.

The answers to all the others are in the comments to the original post, but Question 1 was VJ Knitting who regularly advertised in the Gazette, and 13 was Bateman. They were all neighbours on Occupation Road as featured in the hand-drawn map in this post here.

Lynn also won part two with 11 points, but held off a strong challenge from local author Clive, who got 9 points.

Dennis got 3 tough ones and wins a spot prize.

David Evans very nearly got 2 points, so I think he deserved them.

I’ll list the full answers to part two below, so it’s easier.

Thanks to all of you who had a go, and happy new year. Please let me know what I can do to make this better. I think perhaps I look at the place I live a bit too closely?

Best wishes, I’ll be in touch with winners to arrange prizes.

The school of 62

shire-oak-1962-1-panorama

Like the 1964 image, this  1962 whole-school panorama would be around four feet (1200mm) long, about six inches high and seems to be of around 400 pupils and staff at my estimate. Image kindly supplied by David Hughes. Click for a larger version – but please be prepared, it’s a huge photo.

What seems now like months ago over Christmas, I featured an image that has proven very popular – a whole school panoramic photo of all the staff and pupils of Shire Oak Grammar School in 1964 – well, thanks to David Hughes all the way from Texas in the US, I can share the equivalent photo from 1962.

David wrote:

Hi

The 1964 Shire Oak school photo is very interesting and as I was one of the first intake at Shire Oak I am able to recognise many faces, including my own, in the Photo.

I have only recently discovered Brownhills Bob, so I don’t know if you have already shown the first school photograph from 1962.

Attached is a copy (split into 4 sections) just in case it is of interest. Sorry about the poor quality, it’s travelled a lot and is now with me here in Texas.

Keep up the good work

Regards
David Hughes

Thank you David, the scans were just fine and have stitched beautifully back into one – which as before, I feature whole and sliced for reader perusal.

Thanks so much for the generosity – to know we’re reaching all the way over to the US is very satisfying, and David, if you have anything to say, or share, you’re most welcome – there’s over 4,000 posts of archive material here too, so feel welcome to fill your boots!

To make things easier, I’ve chopped it into chunks, twice with different numbers of parts so if someone falls on an image edge in one set, they won’t in the other. Both sets are the same quality.

Walsall Wood couldn’t beat Lye, but reserves hold Rocester to a draw

00

Walsall Wood couldn’t beat the lads from Lye. Image from The Mowdog.

Yesterday afternoon (Saturday, 8th January 2017), Walsall Wood were away at Lye Town, and after a match played on a very poor quality pitch, Wood were beaten two nil.

Bill submitted the following report:

Hiya Bob,

A defeat, but you would have been hard pushed to say who was second in the league, it really was that close. The pitch was playable – just, but could cause a load of problems for Lye in the next six to eight weeks.

For Wood it’s Staffs Senior Cup action on Tuesday night when Wolves Sporting are the visitors. Saturday sees lowly Tividale the who come a calling. It’s six home games in the next three weeks, so save your pennies.

Lye Town 2 v 0 Walsall Wood

Lye stayed in touch with leaders Alvechurch with this hard fought victory over resurgent Wood.  Both sides battled to come to terms with the far from ideal surface, that was almost devoid of grass and was an endorsement of 3G pitches.

An interesting hundred mile an hour start by both sides but it was Wood who threatened first, Joey Butlin on halfway released Liam Molesworth on the right, his whipped cross was hit first time by Butlin, Alex Dallison making a brave block.

On seven minutes Jack Pearlman delivered a left wing free kick to the far post, Ben Billingham powering in a downward header that bounced up and was touched over by keeper Lewis Gwilliams.  Five minutes later Billingham raced into the right of the box only to fire a cross shot well wide. Three minutes later Scott Gennard went on a powerful run from halfway into the right of the box, firing a low drive into the side netting. On 25 minutes a right wing free kick was delivered to the far post going over everyone, Pearlman getting in a header just inside the post to open the scoring.

On 32 minutes Stephen Palmer delivered a right wing free kick to beyond the far post, Adam Wood headed the ball back across goal, Dallison heading the ball out, but only finding Louis Harris whose first time effort bounced off the top of the bar.  On 43 minutes Palmers right wing free kick was headed back across goal again by Wood, Molesworth slipping as he shot giving keeper Dean Coleman an easy save.

Wood came out for the second half all guns blazing and within a minute Joey Butlin raced onto a ball into the right of the box, keeper Coleman saving bravely at his feet.

Both sides were trying to get the better of the slick surface with Town putting Wood under pressure and winning a right wing corner on 52 minutes, Dallison heading home at the far post to double the home sides lead.

A minute later Molesworth powered inside from wide right, his driven low cross cut out by Pearlman to deny Butlin. On 78 minutes a right wing cross was headed on to the far post by Drew Aiton, Joey Butlin flashing a volley inches over the angle.  two minutes later Charlie Shaw threaded a ball into the right of the box, Ashley Jackson firing a cross shot the wrong side of the post.

Wood having used all their substitutes then lost Drew Ricketts to an injury but still kept trying to take the game to high flying Town, but just couldn’t make the all important breakthrough, giving the home side all the points from a game that could have gone either way.

It was certainly the worst playing surface of the season, the argument that it’s the same for both sides doesn’t hold up however, Lye are used to it, the ML Safety Stadium has grass on it, but that’s football.  It’s now Tuesday, Saturday for three weeks for Wood, that’s six home games on the trot before they travel to St. Andrews on Saturday 28th January to hopefully complete the January fixture list without too many postponements for bad weather.

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

Lye Town – Coleman, Jones, Meacham, Pearlman, Dallison, Paskin, Griffiths, Gennard, Spray, Billingham, Jeavons (captain), Johnston, Tye, Mills, Danks, Till.

Walsall Wood – Gwilliams, Ricketts, Hayles, L. Harris, Wood, Bains, Molesworth, Shaw, Butlin (captain), Palmer, Aiton, Mansell, Wright, Juxon, Taylor, Jackson.

There’s a bonus this week as David and Simon were unable to attend Lye, and so checked out the Wood Reserve team’s game at Oak Park.

David wrote:

Walsall Wood Reserves 3 v 3 Rocester Reserves

I wanted to see how this season’s Wood’s reserve team were shaping up. Conclusion;- Very well, indeed!

Both teams played with boundless enthusiasm , increasing confidence and skill as they delighted spectators with the quality of football, helped by the quality of the forgiving and compliant real grass playing surface.

A sporting, good natured yet meaningful game played out before appreciative spectators.

Images and captions by David Evans

My thanks to Bill and David for great reports – and for all those they selflessly write and send to me after every match. They really are popular, and a credit to the club. Walsall Wood have a reputation for being a great, community spirited group of people and these reports demonstrate that – it’s an honour and joy to feature them here.

For the good of the Wood!

New year quiz – last day – clues to make it easier

The new year quiz is running, and I think this year I made it a bit too hard, so I’m helping out with some clues – anyone could snatch part two at the moment, and spot prizes to be won, so have a go.

Part One for the researchers can be found clicking here

You can see some clues in the comments here.

Q1: This is in recent times, and was advertised in a local publication.
Q13: They were neighbours.
Q15: Check 365days for autumn. I don’t evade many things.
Q20: I go to the same midsummer event every year.

Part Two for the explorers can be found by clicking here

You can see plenty of clues to the remaining questions here

Q27 This is at Longwood. Easy point if you’re passing!
Q32 is on coppice side
Q33 think local cellphone masts!
Q36 It’s on a bin, by a footpath, on a bank somewhere I go a fair bit.
Q38 He’s near a vintage gear seller and a bric a brac seller
Q39 That’s in Hammerwich
Q40 It’s a local pub in quite a dark place, hence the floodlight
Q41 Is on a bridge in a picturesque spot
Q44 is near a manufacturer of structural steelwork that’s usually painted orange
Q45 is near the bear with the fish. Really surprised nobody got this.
Q46 You can possibly do this one from 365days photos. Fly creek is where the boardwalk is that floods when Chasewater is full!
Q47 it’s in St. James, Brownhills. But Where?
Q48 Two words. A barn conversion noted for the letter N
Q50 and 52 clues in answers above! 52 has been empty for years.

Beware of a man with a clipboard – and local thefts continue

untitled-9

Some odd stuff going down in The Wood at the moment… Imagery from Apple Maps.

A couple of local crime alerts here – one of which is rather bizarre, so please be careful, folks!

I’ve been informed by local resident Jackie, who told the following story:

Wondered if anyone else has been approached by a man with a clipboard in Walsall Wood area claiming to have broken down with a lorry, and the breakdown truck has gone off with his wallet and phone in the wagon?

He’s claiming to be trying to get to Tipton, Willenhall, asking for cash.

My husband was approached but thought it suspicious and didn’t offer anything, then couple days later my neighbour was approached at bus stop and fell for the story and gave him £10.

She saw him again the next day with clipboard but he walked past her.

He was wearing a dark bomber style jacket and spoke with a northern accent.

Local resident Matt added:

Yes. Druids walk on Thursday morning. 9am. Said he’s motor had been towed away with his wallet and stuff.

Asked me how to far it was and which direction to Willenhall. Told him good luck mate. Long walk.

He asked me for a quid for the bus. Told him the bus was £2.40. Left him walking towards the school.

Kirsty also met the chap:

A man with a clip board stopped me and my partner by the Anchor pub asking how far he was from Willenhall via walking and where he can get fare from for the buses.

I thought it was a bit strange myself.

The man is described as white, wearing a black jacket and carrying a clipboard. He speaks with a Northern, possibly Ulster accent.

Panhandling itself isn’t serious, but this man is clearly worrying a few people and obtaining money by deception so please be on your guard – and if you’ve been approached, please do call the police on 101.

Secondly, the local thefts continue. The following alert was drawn to my attention by reader Jules, who had a leisure battery stolen from her caravan on her driveway on Tuesday – she said the thieves had tried to get into the van, too:

Dear Resident,

Please be mindful that we have had a number of theft from motor vehicle offences reported to us in your area.

The thefts were from caravans and the target appears to be the batteries. The offences reported occurred over night between 03/01/17 and 04/01/17.

We are asking residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to us.

We would also like to remind residents to always secure their vehicles and keep any valuables locked away.

kind regards
PC 21724 Stef Arber
Brownhills NHT

Please, if you have any information, do speak to the cops, and do report every incident – the more people report incidents, the more likely they are to be tackled.

If you know who the culprits might be, or if you saw anything at all, please do contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The curious incident of the truck in the night time

15909360_1244148705678563_33021422_o

How on earth did he get his rig stuck here? Image kindly supplied by reader Marie.

Something a bit odd took place behind Silver Court yesterday, Friday 6th January, at just before 5pm – reader and old pal of the blog Marie who lives nearby filled my in with the details as the story unfolded, and the whole thing left me a bit bewildered.

For those of you who don’t know, behind Silver Court, which lies just off Brownhills High Street, there is a service road providing access to the houses that form the upper floors of the Court. The service road is currently being reworked as part of the housing development between it and the canal. This isn’t really a through road, just an access drive, that leaves Silver Street just past Farmfoods on the left.

Somehow, yesterday evening, an articulated lorry bearing the Tesco name in huge lettering found itself in that service road, then got very, very stuck when the hapless driver tried to extricate it.

15942671_1244168219009945_1845000614_o

Man, you got that stuck in there real good… Image kindly supplied by reader Marie.

This, you might think, is an easy mistake to make if you don’t know the area, and indeed, many drivers of such HGVs are agency workers, and often don’t know their routes well.

untitled-12

Where Mr. Tesco (or perhaps Mr. Well Driven, who knows?) got his rig stuck. Imagery from Google Maps.

I’m sharing this with you because several odd things happened. One of them was that I tried to contact Tesco about this via Twitter. Their customer service reps on social media couldn’t have been less interested, disowning the vehicle, and pointing out that it was operated by a company called… ‘Well Driven’. I kid you not:

untitled-11

Well Danny, that wasn’t helpful at all. you sure this wasn’t a wind up? If not, I’d be seriously talking to trading standards about the name ‘Well Driven’ as it’s clearly a misnomer….

So despite having a stuck wagon causing local difficulties for residents, bearing the Tesco brand, it was not their problem. Repeated attempts to get Tesco customer service to respond in any helpful manner failed.

I wonder if – heaven forbid – the wagon had been opened and contents vanished, if they’d have been so laissez faire? I somehow doubt it very much.

Either way, the fact that Tesco didn’t seem to be much bothered for their operation’s impact on local communities doesn’t come as a surprise.

I called “Well Driven’ – they denied any responsibility and weren’t interested either. I don’t know what the opposite of a convoy actually is, but it seems we’d got one.

Meanwhile, Marie was watching as the driver managed to extract the trailer, but seemed to get his tractor unit into worse difficulties:

15943064_1244174272342673_1078412089_o

That’s not much of an improvement, and looks quite costly. Oh dear. Image kindly supplied by reader Marie.

I tried further with Tesco online but got nowhere. Later in the evening, someone turned up to help the driver get his truck out with planks of wood and wedges under the wheels. It seems, after some difficulty and several hours, the wagon was freed, and disappeared into the night.

This was the scene this morning, with quite a bit of damage:

Now, I’m not sure what you can draw from all this but if you’re involved in some strife with a lorry marked Tesco, it’s nothing to do with them, clearly – and should you try and find out who the operators are, you look set to be in for quite a hard time.

Paul Simon wrote the wonderful ‘Mean Individual Stranded in a Limousine’ (which was wonderfully covered by Michelle Shocked) – we had a lorry driver stranded in a HGV…

Moreover, how on earth did the driver come to be stuck there, and what chance is there of the company responsible for him putting any of the damage right, or perhaps sorting out decent route training?

Answers on a postcard to…

I’d love to hear from Tesco about this, but I shan’t hold my breath. BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Cheers to Marie for all the photos and running commentary.

Have you lost a cat in the Stonnall area?

15879300_10212026408435015_1189420912_n

What a handsome lad. Someone must know who he is? Image from John and Gina Sylvester.

John and Gina Sylvester have contacted me to say they’ve concerned about the cat above who’s been hanging around Stonnall for a while, and they’re concerned it might be lost.

It’s clearly a rather delightful long haired, white and tabby puss. They wrote:

Hi Bob

Does anyone know the owners of this cat?

He has been around the Stonnall area for months. I am concerned due to the bad weather he may be lost.

Kind regards

If you recognise this cat, please do get in touch – you can comment here or mail me on BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com, and I’ll put you in touch with the finder.

Cheers all, let’s see if we can get this splendid chap home!

Police looking for former Walsall man missing form Stourport

Please keep a lookout if you will folks, for the above chap, Andrew Cooper who’s been missing from his home in Stourport since last Wednesday (4th January 2017) – Andrew is a gentleman from Walsall originally and many of his friends and people who used to work with him have asked me to post the appeal here.

West Mercia Police wrote:

Appeal to find missing Stourport man

West Mercia Police is appealing to the public to help locate a missing Stourport man.

Andrew Cooper, aged 44, was last seen at his home in Stourport on Wednesday morning (4 January) but did not show up for work on that day and he has not returned home since.

Andrew is described as approximately 5’9″ and of a slim build. He has short grey spiked hair and a beard, with brown eyes. He normally wears glasses and a silver wedding ring, a black leather plaited bracelet and a silver ring on his right hand. He speaks with a Walsall accent.

Andrew was last seen wearing blue jeans, an orange t-shirt with stripes, a medium blue padded puffa jacket with a white sheepskin lining and tan Caterpillar work boots. He has tattoos on his chest and shoulders.

Police and Andrew’s family are growing concerned for his welfare. If you have seen Andrew or a man matching his description, please call West Mercia Police on 101.

Issued: 9.10am, Friday 6 January, Holly Claydon-Bevan, Corporate Communications.

It’s very possible Andrew could have returned to Walsall, so please do keep an eye out – there clearly a lot of love and respect for him here, and his family and freiends are very concerned for his welfare.

Anyone with information should call West Mercia Police on 101 or the Missing People charity on 116 000.

The Friends of Brownhills Common – January 2017 meeting coming soon!

38703574

We all love the common, but its management has proven controversial. Why not pop along to the meeting and discuss the issues with the experts and other users?

Here’s one for people interested in the issues surrounding Brownhills Common – theres a meeting on Monday 16th January 2017 of the Freinds of Brownhills Common group at the Environmental Depot, 200 Pelsall Road, Brownhills – WS8 7EN – please meet in the reception by 7:00pm.

Walsall Wood FC are hot stuff, but not smoking.

P1000426

Walsall Wood FC may be on fire on the pitch, but the stand is safe!

There has been some speculation on social media in the last 24 hours about a fire at Walsall Wood FC yesterday afternoon (Thusrday 5th January 2017) – I’m happy to reassure folk with the following info, which was kindly obtained for the blog by the young David Evans.

After the recent fire at the old Oak Park centre, a certain amount of sensitivity to such matters is to be expected, but there was fortunately nothing to worry about in this case.

From Andy Roper, Walsall Wood FC club chairman, (who was, at the time actually in the clubhouse at Walsall Wood):

There was no unexpected fire at the club – workers were burning waste on the rough ground behind the stand. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks to Andy and David Evans for the help with that.

Check out Walsall Wood FC’s website here.

Demolition of derelict Oak Park Leisure Centre imminent

Pictures kindly supplied by Walsall Wood resident Stephen Hill

Yesterday, roving Walsall Wood current affairs correspondent Stephen Hill sent me the above collection of images and the following observations about what is currently happening at Oak Park.

The derelict ensure centre – replaced last August by a new one constructed behind – was the scene a couple of days ago of a large fire that appears to have taken hold in the roof above the former reception area.

Yesterday, demolition crews were stripping the area of the blaze in order that the smouldering timbers could be dampened down. Stephen had a chat with the guys at the scene:

I was chatting to the bloke who is doing the demolition and he has just said that he has to get all the roof off it so they can make sure it’s all damped down and there’s a fire engine coming back to damp it down as they take the roof off.

They’ve started taking some of it down but the public are walking past it so he’s got to stop while they wait for fencing to be put up around to stop the public walking up by the building.

The electric company have just turned up to turn the electric off as an emergency job and also the gas board are coming to disconnect the gas supply as an emergency job too.

They were also talking about the plant room that’s to the swimming pools not sure what’s happening there

The Walsall Advertiser is currently reporting that demolition of the building has been brought forward as a consequence of the fire, and one would hope that the eventual landscaping and replacement by sports pitches as per the original plan will be swift.

That will also speed the removal of the unsightly mounds of soil being stockpiled around the site for the purpose.

Thanks to Stephen for his third report in two days – information like this really is valuable and much appreciated. Thanks for taking time to help keep our community informed.

Anything to add? Comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Please help Holly get home!

Right, I’m running this again as this elderly lady is still away from the owner who still hasn’t been found – Susan Matthews told me about her last week, but as I posted it with another found dog, I think Holly may well have been overlooked.

Hollie has been registered with K9 Search. Those folks do an excellent job.

Susan wrote at the time:

Hiya Bob

Could you help please Can you help put the wagg back in this little girls tail?

She was found running the streets hungry and tired on Wednesday 28th of December in the Ws9 Castlefort area of Walsall Wood.

She’s been scanned for a micro chip but one was not found at the time.

Over the past few days she has stayed with some foster parents bathed and fed wormed. She is now with a long term foster family but is clearly missing her true family.

Her picture has been posted on several media sites but to no avail. She’s been nick named Holly due to the Christmas period.

If you recognise her or she is your lost pet could you please contact Bob via social media.

She has very distinguishing marks and photo identification and due to the shy nature of this little girl she will not be handed over without proof.

She is safe and well where she is loved and looked after and making friends with the families other pets.

Let’s see if we can re unite this little lady with her owner in time for New Years please.

You can contact anonymously if the owner is no longer able to look after her.

Could you emphasise the plea that if she has proved too much to look after that the owner can still come forwards and we will be totally understanding… It would be great to know the dog’s name and how old she is, and they can pass these details into Bob in total anonymity – we don’t need to know who they are she has not been found in a state of neglect.

Thank you Bob x.
Happy new year

Susan Matthews

If you own the above collie or know who does, please mail me on BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com, and I assure all involved of my total confidence, OK? If you want to contact the finders directly, go via Facebook here and message Suzie Thomas.

Cheers everyone. She must be really missing her boss.

Serious road traffic incident ongoing in Walsall Wood

Images and details kindly supplied by Stephen Hill

[Updated 2:00pm Traffic now clearing – Cheers, Bob]

There’s been a nasty accident in Walsall Wood this lunchtime (Wednesday 4th January 2017), and traffic congestion and road closures are ongoing as emergency services deal with the incident.

The crash is thought to involve a pickup truck and a car at the junction of the A461 High Street Walsall Wood with Coppice Road and Brookland Road.

Local man Stephen Hill reported that the accident took place opposite Walsall Wood Library, and that emergency services technicians are in attendance and have used hydraulic cutting gear to free one person from the truck.

The High Street Walsall Wood has been closed, and traffic is currently backing up from the junction along Coppice Road to the Lindon Road Junction, so avoid the area if you can.

My sympathies to those involved and I hope nobody is seriously injured. Thanks to the professionals attending their second incident in Walsall Wood in 24 hours. Never a dull moment…

Thanks to Stephen for his second incident report with pictures this week. top community service there.

Serious fire ongoing at derelict former Oak Park Recreation Centre Walsall Wood

Pictures kindly supplied by Walsall Wood resident Stephen Hill

There’s currently (6:35pm, 3rd January 2017) a serious fire occurring at the the derelict former Oak Park Recreation Centre in Walsall Wood.

Reports of the incident started to come in around 5:15pm. West Midlands Fire Service currently have nine appliances attending. Interesting in that a few months ago, the Fire Service used the site as the base for a training exercise

The centre has been due for demolition for a while, and is destined to become sports pitches for the new centre behind it. Apparently, asbestos removal had been recently completed in preparation for the building’s removal.

Stephen Hill, who also supplied most of the photos in this post, also took the following footage:

An incident support unit has been drafted in, and West Midland Ambulance Service and West Midlands Police are also in attendance.

I do hope nobody’s hurt, and thanks to the emergency services dealing with this.\

There are reports at the Walsall Advertiser here and at the Express and Star here, who unusually have a reporter tweeting at the scene.

West Midlands Fire Deputy Chief Officer Phil Hales has been posting some very informative tweets:

West Midlands Fire Service at Aldridge tweeted:

If you have any more information, I’d welcome it please: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com, or comment here. Please be sensitive in any comments. Cheers.

A view from behind the inkwell… Your chance to catch a local legend

walsallwoodlibrarytalkjan2017

Do you know Ernie Lawrence, please?

Untitled 9

The Shoulder of Mutton – one of the oldest inns in Brownhills and a real community pub. Imagery from Bing! Maps.

Hey everyone – I’ve been contacted by reader Spencer Cartright through Facebook, who’s looking for a gentleman called Ernie Lawrence, who used to live in Brownhills, but possibly now lives in Cannock.

Spencer wrote:

Hope the good people of Brownhills and surrounding areas can help me locate someone!

I’m trying to get in touch with Ernie Lawrence. He would be approx 71-72 years old now and have heard in lived in Brownhills for a good few years, then moved to Cannock.

My father in law Alan Horobin and Ernie were partners in a painting and decorating business for 30 years or more. Alan went on to run the Shoulder Of Mutton pub and lost touch with Ernie about 2000.

If anyone knows Ernie or knows any of his family, his wife was called Brenda – can you message me through here please.

It is quite urgent as well… thanks all

Cheers to Spenscer for the enquiry.

Can you help please? If you can, you can either message Spencer through Facebook here, or mail me in confidence if necessary: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Cheers all – and Happy new year!

Woodmen conquer Stourport Swifts to snatch four wins on the trot

800px-WalshesMeadow

ff Walshes Meadow – home to Stourport Swifts. Image from the Stourport Swifts FC website.

New Year’s Eve (Saturday, 31st December 2016) saw Walsall Wood FC travel our to Stourport, where Walshes Meadow was the venue for a resurgent Wood team’s fourth win on the trot.

There’s some sad, but understandable news here from Bill, too. I will be very sad about it; make no mistake, the match reviews he writes have a large readership and Bill’s wit, wisdom and human touch will be very much missed.

Bill old chap? I wish you all the best for the new year. It’s been a genuine pleasure and honour to feature your work here.

Bill wrote:

Hiya Bob,

A solid defensive performance, with an impressive debut by returning Adam Wood and keeper No. 10 Lewis Gwilliams (signed from Swifts on Friday). It’s a great way of undermining your opponents, signing their keeper 24 hours before the game, especially when he turns in a man of the match performance. Swifts probably had 70% of the possession but Wood comfortably soaked up almost constant pressure but always looked dangerous on the break.

It’s AFC Wulfrunians at Wood on Bank Holiday Monday kick off 3:00 pm with next Saturday a real test of the new team when they visit Lye Town.

I promised some news after the win over St. Andrews, well here it is, as promised. I have decided after 17 years of reporting on Walsall Wood and Pelsall Villa that the time has come to hang up my pen. It’s mainly a health issue decision, the last 12 months (or should I say nine) have got progressively more and more difficult and it’s time to call it a day. I was talked out of retiring six years ago, but this time there will be no change of mind. It’s been a blast and I wouldn’t have missed it for the World.

Ironically our last league game of this season is away at Westfields on April 29th, when the last three seasons have seen us finish the season at home. Needless to say I’ll be writing reports until then so I haven’t gone yet.

By the way, two additions to the January fixture list, Tuesday 10th sees us entertain Wolves Sporting in the replay of the abandoned game. Then Tuesday 24th see Highgate United come a calling in the league cup.

Can we wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year from The Wood?

Stourport Swifts 1 v 2 Walsall Wood

Wood recorded their fourth two-one victory on the bounce but they were made to fight all the way by a brave Swifts side who deserved at least a point from their battling performance.

Swifts started quickly putting Wood under early pressure without troubling former keeper Lewis Gwilliams, but it was the visitors who went ahead after 10 minutes, Steven Hayles went racing clear wide left, his cross to the right of the box was controlled superbly by Drew Aiton who played the ball through the defence into the six yard box for the ever alert Joey Butlin to steer the ball past keeper Dominic Richards.

On 19 minutes danger man Jack Bailey cut inside from wide right, played a neat one-two with Alex Smith before finding Aaron Lloyd only for the ball to bounce off the striker straight to Gwilliams.  On 27 minutes Joe Phillips powered down the left wing, his cross cum shot right under the bar was pushed away by Gwilliams. Two minutes later Phillips wide left crossed to the near post and Lloyd’s downward header bounced off the left hand post. Four minutes later it was Bailey wide right who crossed beyond the far post, a header from Phillips bringing a full length save from Gwilliams. On 44 minutes Jim Hanson collected a ball into the right of the box, his vicious low cross superbly cut out at the near post by Gwilliams.

On 51 minutes Phillips was set up by Lloyd on the left of the box, Gwilliams again saving the low drive at full stretch. Three minutes later from a left wing corner Lloyd powered in a header that was pushed away by Gwilliams.  On 58 minutes Smith cut inside from the right, his cross shot finally beat Gwilliams, amazingly the ball bounced to safety off Lloyd on the goal line.

On 61 minutes a 40 yard central free kick by Adam Wood was half cleared to Aiton who hit a first time effort just wide from 25 yards.

Back to Swifts attacking,  when two minutes later Bailey cut in from the right, his far post cross met by Hanson who volleyed wide.  Bailey again on 66 minutes crossed into the centre, Lloyd flicked a header on and Phillips volleyed the ball straight at Gwilliams.

On 68 minutes Liam Rushworth raced clear wide on the Wood right, his far post cross glanced the wrong side of the post by an Anthony Juxon header. Swifts kept Wood under pressure but couldn’t make the breakthrough.  Always open to the counter attack they were nearly caught out on 82 minutes, a long high ball forward by Gwilliams was misjudged by Butlin and Matthew Fulloway allowing Romeao Hutton the chance to run through on goal to beat the keeper and the right hand post.  A minute later Wood looked to have sewn the game up, Rushworth cutting inside from wide right at pace, he played a clever one-two with Butlin and his low drive from the left of the box gave Richards no chance.

On 88 minutes Hanson raced onto a ball right of centre, his howitzer rising drive from 30 yards going through the hands of Gwilliams. A minute later it should have been all square, Phillips crossing into the six yard box from the left, Matthew Pinder stabbing the ball wide from all of five yards.

Wood’s fourth win on the trot under the Harry Harris/Scott Rickards management partnership moved them up to seventh place, tantalisingly close to the top six.  With Brocton continuing their revival the bottom is looking very tight, Monday’s opponents for Wood AFC Wulfrunians could find themselves sucked into the relegation dogfight if they lose that game.  Next Saturday sees the real examination of Wood’s revival credentials when they visit high flying Lye Town.

All that remains is to wish everyone a happy and prosperous new year from all at The Wood.

Bill Shaw.

The Teams:

Stourport Swifts – Richards, Smith, Wager, Priest, Fulloway (captain) Hurrell, Phillips, Hanson, Lloyd, Perry, Bailey, Pinder, Hudson, Robinson, Grant.

Walsall Wood – Gwilliams, Deakin, Hayles, Bains, Ricketts, Wood, Juxon, Rickards, Butlin (captain), Aiton, Shaw, Molesworth, Hutton, Taylor, Harris, Palmer.

Walsall Wood Football Club are a top local side with a big-hearted faithful who know how to have a great time supporting their lads, and welcome all comers to come enjoy great local soccer. The boys from The Wood have been at the heart of the local community for a century or more, so please do go check out a match or two if you’re curious.

I guarantee you’ll have more fun cheering on the local chaps than you ever will watching the over-priced prima donnas on TV…

Cheers old chap. For the good of The Wood!

She said:

New year quiz 2017: part two for the explorers…

The weather might not be great, but why not get out and see which of these questions you can solve?

Right, here’s the second half of the Brownhills Blog New Year Quiz 2017 – these questions are for those who can explore the area and have a nose around – the first set were released yesterday, and are for those who may be unable to explore or just prefer to research their answers online.

You can answer as many questions as you like in ether part. The highest score in either part will win Backyard Ale (or an equivalent if you don’t drink!)

If many remain unanswered, I’ll award the prizes and leave the remainder open for spot prizes.

All pictures are from our area, or places you might find me, reasonably locally.

Remember, this is just for fun!

Answers will close at 9pm, Sunday 8th January 2017, or until every question is answered beforehand.

Points will be awarded to the first person to comment the correct answer to any question. All questions worth one point unless stated. After that, no points will be handed out for answering it again. I will tot up the scores as we go. Answers will only be accepted as comments to the quiz posts, and my decision will be open and final.

Remember to include the number of the question in your comment, otherwise it won’t be counted! Answers will only be accepted as comments here – any on Facebook, Twatter or via email will be ignored.

Don’t worry if your comment is held in moderation, I will take the submission time if necessary.

I don’t expect anyone to get lots right. I think the questions are diverse enough that a fairly low score might well win – so do have a go. If the result is a draw, I’ll hold a tie breaker. What form that will take will depend on the result. Please just take a punt, and have fun.

Good luck!

OK, which one of you buggers has got the snake?

15676501_1188762391201193_3875349165325194808_o

Image posted on Facebook by Chico’s Pet Supplies of Brownhills.

This is an important post on behalf of a respected and decent local business – I’d be grateful if you could read, share it, and do all we can to get this wee fellow back where he belongs.

Chico’s Pet Supplies in Brownhills High Street yesterday (Thursday 27th December 2016) suffered an unusual act of shoplifting – thieves have taken a live baby snake.

I’ll let the victim explain:

Right ladies and gents. It’s with an angry, sad heart I am posting this.

On Tuesday 27th Dec someone came into the shop while we were open and decided to help themselves to our snake.

I would like to point out that we have signs up explaining you are on cctv. Well we have now got a copy of this and will be handing it to the police Monday morning if the snake does not materialise back in the shop by 5pm Saturday when we shut the shop.

We would rather get the snake back (as he needs his feed as he’s only a baby) otherwise not only will the video be handed to the police but I will happily post it all over Facebook for everyone to see.

Do the right thing and bring this poor baby back before its to late for him.

Photo was taken with one of our shop girls before he was taken (not of the person who stole him)

That seems straightforward enough.

If you have any information, but don’t want to post, send anything you might have to me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com – I’ll pass it on to Chico’s without hesitation.

You can also contact Chico’s on Facebook here, or call them on 01543 370610.

The questions will be released in 2 groups. The first, this group 1-25, are aimed at those who maybe can’t get out so much or aren’t living locally: they can all be answered from research online, either from posts on this blog, my 365daysofbiking tumblr, or by thinking laterally.

I will release a second observational set of questions tomorrow, for the hawkeyes amongst you who like to get out and explore.

I will award Backyard Beer prizes (or equivalent) to the winners of each group. As usual, there are also spot prizes of local history or other books for the lateral thinkers or people who stand out.

To give everyone a sporting chance, comments will not open until 6pm Friday, 30th December 2016. Answers will close at 9pm, Sunday 8th January 2017, or if every question is answered beforehand.

If many remain unanswered, I’ll award the prizes and leave the remainder open for spot prizes. I would ask that readers not answer the questions based on their content 😉

Remember, this is just for fun!

Good luck!

Pair charged with assault and theft after incident at Brownhills Tesco store

dji_0076_pt

Tesco Brownhills where a security guard was injured last Tuesday.

Following wildly differing rumours of a security guard being injured in an incident at Brownhills branch of Tesco last Tuesday (27th December 2016), I sought a statement from West Midlands Police as to what had actually happened.

Today (Thursday 29th December 2016) they issued the following statement:

A man and a woman have appeared at Walsall Magistrates Court today charged with assault and theft.

Lisa Walters, aged 34, was charged with actual bodily harm after a security guard at a supermarket in Silver Street, Brownhills, suffered cut wounds to her hand which were treated at hospital on 27 December.

Walters and Robert Steatham, aged 37, both unemployed and from Sandwell House, Highgate, were charged with theft from the same supermarket and further thefts from stores in Willenhall on 28 November and Brownhills on 30 November.

I post this statement for information only, and would point out that rumours circulating that a security guard had been ‘stabbed in the chest’ are not true.

Cheers to the police for their swift action and considered response, and my best wishes to the Security Guard for a fast and complete recovery.

Old Heath Hayes – another remarkable work

old-heath-hayes-4_000076

Just one of the great images in the Heath Hayes History book: striking miners pick coal in Wimblebury during the 1921 strike.

The wonderful and kind local historian Robert Selvey has generously donated another local history classic to the blog archive for readers to enjoy, and this one’s a cracker – it’s Old Heath Hayes, the companion ‘Green Book’ title to the ‘Old Chasetown’ book donated by Stuart and posted here a couple of weeks ago.

It’s another, nearly hundred page work packed with photos and information, written and compiled by John Bucknall and J Francis under the wing of R Lewis, and this is a sad one as the first page notes – it records the retirement of Mr. Lewis.

The introduction notes the following:

Having already been principally involved in the production of the illustrated booklet ‘Old Chasetown’ for the Staffordshire Authority, I thought that, on transfer to a Heath Hayes school, it might be possible to produce something of similar interest for the Heath Hayes area. After all, the villages of Heath Hayes and Chasetown seem to have had surprisingly similar patterns of development, from desolation and heathland to thriving village communities as the exploitation of coal commenced. In fact two of the collieries in the Heath Hayes area were owned and developed by the Cannock Chase Colliery Company as a widening of its interests from its Chasetown base, 8’s pit and 6’s both being to the east of the Wimblebury Road from Five Ways island. The former was opened in 1862, remaining in production until 1961, while 6’s colliery (the Cannel – so named because it produced worthwhile ‘Cannel’ coal for specialised usage) was only of limited life, opening in 1866 and closing in 1874. Both spoil heaps are still visible, but now of course fully overgrown by trees, shrubs and smaller vegetation as nature reclaims her own. Such is the variety of vegetation on a site of previous intense human exploitation and activity, that in 1986 a class of children undertaking Natural History work on the site discovered a wild orchid, very happy with life among the coal-dust and shale. By quirk of fate it seems that the return to the wild might be shortlived, as further intensive opencast mining is being proposed for the area, modern methods using giant machines being able to recover coal which in the days of the deep mines was either too shallow to mine safely, or was or limited seam thickness and therefore unprofitable to mine. Todays economics are however different. With deep coal mined from the Chase’s two remaining pits, Lea Hall and Huntington, vast quantities or shallower coal with far less sulphur content than produced from these deep mines is required to blend with the latter to satisfy the enormous needs in the production of electrical energy by the C.E.G.B.

Robert Selvey kindly scanned the book from his own collection and assembled a very professional PDF file which you can download below. Thanks to him for the hard work and dedication, without this kind gentleman our history would be much the poorer. Respect.

Old Heath Hayes (PDF file, 11.4 megabytes)

You can also peruse the first 20 pages in the gallery at the foot of this post; click any page to see a legible version.

Like the Brownhills book, this is a remarkable work, completed long before the internet- and I bet it’ll raise a few questions and debates amongst readers.

Maybe you remember the book, or were involved in some way. I’d love to hear your story.

The Electric Movie

untitled-9

I’m sure many people will remember these production lines fondly. Still from Crabtree Society film.

I’ve been asking for years for more material on Crabtree and other local factories, as I’m sure there’s an untapped and rich seem of material to be found from these great lost local employers – but sadly little has emerged.

We get odd items, but nothing like this wonderful film I’m about to share.

A few days ago, old friend of the blog Fred Butler found a video on YouTube that might interest those who recall Crabtree – it’s from the Crabtree Society which I know very little about but intend to look into over the next few days.

All I can say is thanks Fred for a wonderful film – how many mums, grandmas, aunts and sisters worked on those production lines? Whole families passed through Crabtree, a once massive local company with large factories in Walsall and Brownhills, both of which are sadly no more.

My huge gratitude for a wonderful addition to our recorded local history – if you have any more Crabtree images, I’d love to share them here!

Crabtree B'hills 1975ish red

Labelled ‘April 1976’, Crabtree production lines were labour intensive and fast paced, requiring nimble fingers and no slacking. Crabtree were a massive local manufacturer, and a world leading name; sadly they sold out some years ago and now products sold under the name are manufactured abroad and shipped in. The school of 64

shire-oak

This image is around four feet (1200mm) long, about six inches high and seems to be of around 400 pupils and staff at my estimate. Image kindly supplied by Clive Roberts. Click for a larger version – but please be prepared, it’s a huge photo.

This is a quick one, but being as it’s Christmas holidays, I think this will prove an interesting one to ponder on for locals of a certain age.

The above image is an old-style wide panorama school group photo taken of what I believe to be the entire of Shire Oak Grammar’s pupils in 1964. This photo has featured here before, but courtesy of local history author Clive Roberts who’s scanned an original four foot print (from which I’ve stitched them back together), I can now share a high quality version above – click on it to see full size, but be patient, it’s huge.

To make things easier, I’ve chopped it into chunks, twice with different numbers of parts so if someone falls on an image edge in one set, they won’t in the other. Both sets are the same quality.

Click on any slice to see the image full size:

The same image, cut into eight:

If you’ve got memories of the school, or indeed this photo, or you recognise yourself, or someone else – please do get in touch, either by commenting here or mailing me. BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Thanks to Clive for his patience and hard work here – please don’t forget that his current book, ‘Old Public Houses of Brownhills (Part One) is available now and selling fast – so you need to move fast to bag a copy. To find out more, click here.

Ordnance Survey sheet 43/00, 1947 revision. Click for the full version – make take a while as it’s very large. Alternatively, use the gallery below.

Here’s the full version of that map I promised yesterday, the 1947 one with the curious markings – I’ve scanned it full size at 600DPI and stitched out properly into one image, so fill your boots.

This is a very large image, so you may want to use the mosaic gallery at the foot of the post – just click on a tile to view it.

Ordnance Survey Sheet 43/00, 1947 covering Brownhills, Chasetown, North Aldridge, Pelsall and Stonnall. It cost £2 from a chance find in a Rugeley secondhand shop.

I’m very curious as to the markings – manly enclosures – and who made them. Damn sure I recognise the handwriting here.

Any ideas? Comment here, or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Boxing Day battle sees Wood victorious

Images and captions kindly supplied by the young David Evans

Boxing Day afternoon (26th December 2016), Walsall Wood F.C. played Leicester newcomers St. Andrews at Oak Park, an entertaining ad good-natured match from which the Wood emerged victorious.

My best wishes to all the football folk who help and support the reports here – Bill Shaw for the excellent writing and humour, Andy Roper for all he does, and to David Evans for photos and help when I can’t work out what’s happening – but especially to the team and supporters, who time and time again prove themselves and their club a credit to the community. Happy new year, and thanks to you all.

Bill Shaw submitted the following match report:

Hiya Bob,

Compliments of the season to you and all your readers from everyone at the Wood, as we enter an exciting new era.

There was no controversy about this win, although the visitors would say otherwise, but hey, what do they know, they couldn’t even find Walsall Wood!

I have some news to impart, but it can wait until after the Stourport Swifts game, which don’t forget is on New Year’s Eve with a 1-00 pm kick off.

Enjoy what’s left of the festive period, all the best from The Wood.

Walsall Wood 2 v 1 St. Andrews

The new Feelgood Factor saw the new management duo of Harry Harris and Scott Rickards combine to record their third two-one win on the bounce, moving Wood back into ninth place.

Both sides went for it from the start, so it came as no surprise when Wood went ahead in the ninth minute, Craig Deakin was brought down wide right for what proved the first of many times, Drew Aiton from wide right swung in the free kick, Joey Butlin glancing a header away from his namesake keeper Warren Butlin.  It was end to end stuff without an end product, when on 18 minutes Shay Brennan ran onto a ball left of the box, pushed the ball past Deakin before throwing himself on the floor, somehow he escaped the yellow card his blatant dive deserved. Three minutes later Mason Hurst played a ball over the top of the Wood defence, keeper Sam Arnold racing from his box to fly kick clear from Sam Preston. On 23 minutes a ball into the left of the box was covered by Arnold and Louis Harris but they decided to enter into the Christmas spirit with a Chuckle Bros rendition of to me – no to you, Rob Morgan nipped between them to steal the ball, before calmly sliding the ball into the centre of the box for Brennan to tap home from 5 yards.

On 35 minutes Aiton wide right cut inside and crossed to the far post, keeper Warren making a superb full length save from Joey’s powerful downward header. Six minutes later a slide rule ball from Josh Mansell into the left of the box saw Warren racing off his line to save bravely at the feet of Joey.

Ten minutes into the second half a clever reverse ball from Mansell released Steven Hayles into the left of the box; he left his marker in his wake and fired over the near angle.

Two minutes later Hurst played the ball up to Leon Doughty on the right edge of the box, he turned cleverly and drilled a low drive inches wide.

Back came Wood when a minute later Aiton was fouled 25 yards out just right of centre, Butlin took the free kick, Warren couldn’t hold the shot  but was first to react diving on the loose ball. Two minutes late a superb through ball by Joey released Hayles into the left of the box, before he could get his shot away Preston made a superb tackle, getting injured in the process.  He was able to continue after lengthy treatment.  The left wing corner was delivered into the centre of the box, Anthony Juxon powered in a header that Keaton Towers stopped but the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line, Butlin forcing the ball home to make doubly sure.

The reply was immediate, Hurst crossed from the left to find Brennan, Arnold out quickly and bravely to save at his feet, loud penalty appeals ignored.

Both sides went looking for the next goal but it was Wood who should have wrapped the game up on 87 minutes, Romeao Hutton was released into the centre of the box, keeper Butlin making a superb, brave fingertip save at his feet.

Wood held out to record their third two-one victory on the bounce, but unlike the fortuitous win over Sporting Khalsa this was thoroughly deserved.

Wood end the eventful year of 2016 with an away trip to Stourport Swifts on New Year’s Eve, please note the 1-00 pm kick off.

The first game of 2017 sees AFC Wulfrunians visit the Wood on Monday January 2nd, kick off 3-00 pm.

Bill Shaw.

The Teams:

Walsall Wood – Arnold, Deakin, Hayles, L. Harris, Ricketts, Baines, Palmer, Juxon, Butlin (captain) Aiton, Mansell, H. Harris, Hutton, Molesworth, Jackson, Rickards.

St. Andrews – Butlin, Hodkinson, Putman, Johnson, Towers, Orton, Morgan, Hurst, Brennan, Doughty, Preston (captain), Kitchen, Fairhurst.

Thanks to Bill and David for the report – always appreciated – for The Good of the Wood!

Marking the map

scan-3-panorama

Found in a Rugeley secondhand shop, an old map. Marked. What the Dickens is going on? Click for a larger version (ignore the grey box watermarks for now).

Whilst shopping in Rugeley just before Christmas, I found a map for sale for a trivial £2 – 1:25000 series OS, it was a rolled sheet for display rather than a folded, conventional edition.

It’s 1947, Sheet 43/00 covering Brownhills, Chasetown, North Aldridge, Pelsall and Stonnall. But what’s interesting isn’t the map – although that’s a gorgeous period piece in itself – it’s the crayon and pencil markings on it.

The hand they were written in looks familiar – have I stumbled on a map once belonging to one of our local historians hereabouts?

Any idea as to what’s going on here, what the markings are and what they’re about?

I’ll feature the whole sheet later today, as soon as the license comes through for the stitching software.

In the meantime, any ideas? Comment here, or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

2016 Christmas bin collection information

15578255_1169560199780203_1745633023326428848_o

It’s all here, folks. Click for a larger version.

Hi folks – I’m getting a lot of enquiries regarding Christmas bin collection arrangements in the borough of Walsall, and thought I’d post the official guidance for those that seem concerned about when the guys in orange will come and collect their rubbish.

In a nutshell, collections go weekly for both grey and green bins until Friday 13th January 2017. If your collection is usually a Monday, you’ll not have a collection on Boxing Day, but will on January 2nd, a week later.

Extra bagged waste WILL NOT be taken this year as extra collections are laid on.

If you’re confused as to which your collection day actually is, click here to use the postcode checker on the council website – it works a treat and will tell you exactly when to put out which bin.

Note that the only day the refuse service doesn’t operate is Boxing Day.

Hope that helps clarify things – folks seem to get a bit worked up about Christmas bin collections…

Of course, if the winds get up again, your bin could well put itself out… Image from My Writer’s Circle.
