The Warreners junction is busy and there will be a lot of congestion. Take care, folks!

Monday, 13th February 2017, 1:53pm – Traffic is currently backing up in the Brownhills area due to a collision between a lorry and a car at the junction by the former Warreners Arms pub, where Ogley Road meets the High Street.

More as I have it – Nigel1964Villa kindly tweeted my the following a few minutes ago – thanks also to Beth Bailey who pinged me on Facebook.

At 2:15pm Beth said:

Fire engine has just left. Driver of car is still being attended to but managed to get herself out of her vehicle. Police still on scene. We get so many accidents outside these houses.

West Midlands Police issue appeal after man dies in Pelsall collision

There has been much shock and sadness in the local community following the fatal car crash that took place between Pelsall and Brownhills on the A4124 Pelsall Road last night (Saturday, 11th February 2017).

West Midlands Police this afternoon have released a statement, which I post below.

My sympathies and condolences are extended to all troubled by this awful incident. I would ask readers to be thoughtful and to consider feelings of others when commenting on social media. Thanks.

If you have any information, please do contact the police, however minor you think it may be.

West Midlands Police issued the following appeal a few minutes ago:

Police are appealing for information after a man died when a car hit a wall in Pelsall last night (Saturday 11 February).

Officers were called to reports a blue Suzuki Swift had struck a wall in Lichfield Road at 7pm.

A passenger in the vehicle, 22-year-old local man Ryan Coney, was confirmed dead at the scene.

In a statement his family said: ‘Ryan was the much loved youngest son of Peter and Vivienne; and younger brother to Lee, Jemma and Tank.

‘He was a keen and talented footballer who was much loved by all who were blessed to have met him.’

Three others in the car suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information and may have seen the vehicle in the lead up to the collision to come forward.

Sergeant Alan Hands, from the West Midlands Police Collision Investigation Unit, said: “A young man has sadly lost his life and we have specialist officers offering his family support.

“We are still at the early stages of this investigation and would ask anyone who may have seen anything to contact us as soon as possible.”

To contact the unit call 101, quoting log 1970 of 11 February, or email FL_COLLISION_INVEST@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk.

Pictures posted on Twitter by @AldridgeFire

It’s been a busy night in the area for the emergency services as Saturday evening (11th February 2017) saw a major accident on the Pelsall Road in the Highbridges area, an incident that closed the M6 Toll for a while and now a blaze in what West Midlands Fire Service are calling a ‘cannabis factory’ above shops in Walsall Wood High Street.

@Aldridgefire tweeted:

My gratitude to the folks who work so hard to keep us all safe. Cheers to readers Kevin, Dena and Les for help with this one.

The Pelsall Road has been closed to through traffic. Image from reader Vicky shows the closure at the Coppice Side/Pelsall Road junction.

I’m receiving bits of information about a couple of road accidents this evening (Saturday, 11th February 2017) – a clearly quite serious one on the Pelsall Road between Brownhills and the Fingerpost, and another either on, or on the approaches to the M6 Toll/Burntwood Way.

https://twitter.com/jetpack/status/830517380212207618

From the Highways Agency:

Incident

The Pelsall Road has been closed for a time, and emergency services have been attending.

Staffordshire County Council issue statement on Chasewater Dam works currently ongoing

tumblr_odp8f40m4n1qib2vgo7_1280

Business as usual on the lake, although the levels are low for the time of year.

I’ve been asked by more than a few people this week what’s going on with Chasewater Dam – in the last few weeks water levels have been lowered and traffic blocked from the dam road; crews and equipment have been working on apparent drainage works.

Not finding any mention via existing channels, yesterday I asked Staffordshire County Council via Twitter, as well as the official Chasewater twitter account what was happening.

I didn’t expect much as both accounts generally ignore requests they don’t like, and after a day of polite, persistent questioning and requests for a press release, very little was forthcoming.

Images of current dam works kindly supplied by Andy Dennis

I was therefore amused this afternoon to note a release had subsequently been prepared and sent to fellow local site Lichfield Live, but not me, who requested it. Fit of pique much? Ah well, at least they didn’t communicate this time via badly formatted, off-message flyers nailed to trees

Anyway, it seems work is ongoing to sort some minor drainage issues with the dam, prior to the next safety inspection. It’s unclear what prompted the work, but with such an experimental project, a certain amount of tinkering is to be expected I guess.

Here’s the article from Lichfield Live which can be read on their site here.

Engineers to lower levels in Chasewater reservoir during dam maintenance work

The water level in Chasewater reservoir is set to drop as maintenance work takes place on the dam wall.

Staffordshire County Council says the clay, earth and stone structure needs to have its drainage improved.

Cllr Mark Winnington said the work would see new drains installed, silt cleared from existing ones and more stone added.

“Chasewater is one of Staffordshire’s most popular attractions and that is why we have made considerable investments there in recent years,” he said. “The design and nature of the dam wall means that it needs ongoing monitoring and care.

“We’ll be working on it for the next few weeks and passers-by will notice we’ve lowered the water to summer levels and closed the wall-top to traffic to help.”

The county council has been responsible for the 200-year-old dam since it took over a £5.5million repair project in May 2011 from Lichfield District Council.

A message about the 2017 Brownhills Canal Festival from Brian Stringer…

p1060340

The 2016 Canalside festival was a real success, and I’m sure 2017’s will match it!

Brownhills activist, local author, top bloke and Clayhanger Kid himself, Brian Stringer has dropped me a line to share with readers important information about thus year’s Brownhills Canalside Festival, which will be undergoing a change of date and organiser this year.

Brian is keen to correct some circulating rumour, and I’m only too happy to help him do so. Brian had this to say:

Hi Bob.

I believe different rumours have been going the rounds re this years Canalside Festival so I thought I’d put you in the picture.

Because we as a committee are getting rather long in the tooth and help becoming harder to get, we have decided that the Local Committee are not going ahead this year.

However it has been agreed that the 2017 Brownhills Canalside Festival will take place, but on Saturday 12th of August as part of the Towncentre festival weekend. Diane Mansell, the Towncentre Manager has agreed to work with the Community Association and the Canalside will be run as previous years with stalls etc. I will again be responsible for the stage and musical acts which is to be funded by the Local Committee.

I also understand that building will be started on the old market site by then, but agreement has been reached for Tesco to make their car park available after registration.

Hope this clears matters up.

Regards,
Brian

Thanks to Brian for writing and clearing things up. I’m interested that a Saturday has been chosen, and I must confess I’ve often wondered if the event would work better than on a Sunday. We shall see.

I wish everyone involved all the best and stand ready to assist with publicity, etc as usual. Diane has made a cracking job of other Brownhills events, and of course, Brownhills in bloom, so is clearly a worth successor.

Cheers to Brian for letting us know.. Now, roll on summer…

Back to Earth

picture1

Interesting graphic design. Original period poster from the PennyCliffe Club kindly supplied by Terry Basford via Clive Roberts.

One of the more bizarre episodes in the history of Brownhills that’s always interested me is the use of long-gone Coombe House on Coppice Lane as a music/night club.

Coombe House was a large place and can be seen in the opening sequence of the early 1960s Brownhills Cincefilm Club footage below – a dark, foreboding, red-brick pile, it was once the home of a mine agent, then at least two local doctors before being used as Engineer’s Offices by Brownhills Urban District Council before it’s merger with Aldridge.

Not a natural candidate for music club, it nonetheless became one for a short period on the cusp of the 1960s and 70s, before closing under a bit of a cloud. After the Pennycliffe shut down, Coombe house became derelict and was demolished soon afterwards, and very little evidence of the place now remains.

Noted local historian and author Clive Roberts has investigated the history of the Pennycliffe and found out a whole bunch of great info about the place, including the fact that the precursor band to Black Sabbath – Earth – played there.

This is somewhat prescient as Ozzy and the lads played their last ever gigs last weekend.

Clive was good enough to write up all he knows about this curious musical venture for the blog – and my thanks to him for yet another great point of interest. For more of his detailed and thoroughly enjoyable work, Clive’s latest book ‘The Public Houses of Brownhills Part One’ is still on sale and details can be found here.

Clive Roberts wrote:

Pennycliffe Club

The Club was located at Coombe House, Coppice Road, Brownhills.

These premises were owned, and at one time used by Aldridge and Brownhills Urban District Council, and originally occupied and named after Dr. John Coombe Maddever a doctor looking after health and well being of the folk of the Brownhills and local area.

The Pennycliffe Club was locally known as the Pen.

Known bands that have played at the Club:

The band called Earth (Black Sabbath) were booked to play at the Pennycliffe, on 11th May 1969 Earth were paid £15 (cash) for 1 ½ hour performance. They had to be at the venue by 7pm. (Courtesy Norman Hood).

Below are a few of the known bands that performed there in 1969:

Bakerloo Blue Line
Prospekt
Dog House blue band
Tea & Symphoney
Evolution
Earth (Later Black Sabbath)

In 1970 the registered owner of the Pennycliffe was fined 13 times for serving alcohol to non-members, there are no more entries after this date, so I have to assume that is would have closed down soon after this date, as I would of thought they would not tolerate this abuses of the regulations!

I do have the information on who was registered as the owner of the club, but seeing as it was only 46 years ago I thought it would be best not to say.

If you would like to see the original document containing the Pennycliffe Club application for a license for your self, they are archive at Walsall Local History Centre, Ref Number: 492/4/7; Register to sell intoxicating liquor; date 1959 to 1974.

Attached are two very rare posters covering performances at the Pennycliffe Club, they are not in very good condition, but considering their age, its amazing they have survived. I believe these posters may be from the year 1969!

When doing the research on the Pennycliffe I found some information on the group Ambrose Slade, later known as just Slade, in January 1969 they performed at Brownhills Memorial Club.

Again, remarkably stark design. Original period poster from the PennyCliffe Club kindly supplied by Terry Basford via Clive Roberts.

Sandfields Pumping Station – a great historic building with immense history and social significance – not just to Lichfield, but to the Black Country. Lichfield Discovered and local historian Dave Moore have saved this valuable asset for the community.

Sandfields Pumping Station champion and public historian extraordinaire Dave Moore has been in touch to let me know that this coming Monday (13th February 2017) there will be a public progress meeting for the Lichfield Waterworks Trust charity, formerly the Friends of Sandfields Pumping Station group.

Its worth noting The Trust have announced that they had been successful in securing the building for the future as revealed here last year, and recently gained access to the interior of the pumping station for the first time.

Note the new venue – the meeting takes place at the The Bowling Green pub, Friary Road, Lichfield from 7:30-9pm.

Dave is, of course, one of the leading lights of Lichfield Discovered, along with Kate ‘Cardigan’ Gomez from Lichfield Lore.

It’s great to see people like Dave encourage a better attitude to our historic buildings, rather than that which we seem to have here in Walsall, where we regard heritage architecture as merely ‘fuel’.

Please do attend if you’re able, it’s sure to be enlightening and educational.

In the second serialised article of what will turn out to be quite a few, here’s the next three photos from Walsall Wood Secondary School in the 1950s with accompanying notes, as introduced in this blog post here – This time, I am including the handwritten notes by Tony himself below each image.

I shall post the photos in batches of three so we aren’t swamped with too much information at once – and these ones all seem to feature form or class groups. I shan’t comment on the notes directly, or attempt to transcribe: these are clearly a matter for readers as they obviously raise questions as well as answer them – and the last thing I want to do is lead the witnesses!

Thanks to Tony Portman who generously granted access to a remarkable collection, and to David Evans for scanning them so diligently. People like you gentlemen are keeping local history alive. Thank you.

Arian Wigley, rest in peace. Image generously supplied by Simon Reeves.

Friday saw the funeral of sadly departed son of Brownhills Adrian Wigley when friends and acquaintances of Adrian turned out in force to pay their respects to the talented Brownhills musician and character.

Adrian’s great friend Simon Reeves has written to me to ask if I’d share his message of thanks to all those who paid their respects and helped give Adrian the sendoff he deserved.

I’m happy and honoured to share Simon’s thoughtful and kind message with you.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Kath and Alan at the Rose Villa for allowing us to have the wake there and supplying the food, which was amazing.

(Anybody wanting food for a function, contact Kath at the Rose Villa!)

Also John from Ashcroft Funeral Directors for everything they did.

A massive thanks to Dave Webster who performed the service which was perfect.

My last thanks are to everybody who has donated to the Air Ambulance Charity. (There is still the collection box on the bar in the Rose Villa if u would like to donate).

Thank you all
Simon Reeves

I’d like to extend my thanks, and those of the blog readers and wider community if I may to Simon who has so carefully and respectfully looked after Adrian’s funeral and matters since his passing. It can’t have been an easy task and in doing so, Simon has shown great love and respect for his lost mate.

Thank you Simon. This is real community at work, and you should be proud.

Simon wrote an extraordinary tribute to Adrian which I posed here previously – it’s well worth a read if you haven’t done so.

Beleaguered Wood lose to Alvechurch

p20131109c

image from Pitch-side Stories blog.

Yesterday afternoon (4th February 2017) Walsall Wood FC travelled south to play Alvechurch away, and were sadly beaten, continuing a very unfortunate sequence of losses for the beleaguered lads from The Wood.

Sadly, no reserve match as advertised tdue to a waterlogged pitch at Oak Park. It never rains, etc…

Bill Shaw was there to catch the action, and remains positive:

Hiya Bob,

Another defeat but lots of positives to come out of this performance. Games hinge on split second decisions and at present Wood are struggling to make the right ones, but they have 12 games to get things sorted starting with the visit of Shepshed Dynamo next Saturday.

Alvechurch  4 v 1 Walsall Wood

Another defeat for Wood at the league leaders but the often used phrase was certainly true, ‘There ain’t no justice.’ Two-one would have been hard to take, but four-one was really rubbing it in.

Wood started brightly putting the home defence under pressure, a Craig Deakin snap shot easily saved by keeper Paul Evans.  His clearance went over the Wood defence, was collected at pace by Danny Dubidat, whose lob beat advancing keeper Adam Jenkins and the bar.

On four minutes a right wing corner was delivered beyond the far post, Rikki Bains hammering a header off the underside of the bar, Joey Butlin first to react one-nil.

The lead lasted just a minute, from a right wing corner Connor Deards powered a header home to make it one-one. Four minutes later from another right wing corner Jenkins made two amazing reflex saves to keep the scores level.

After 18 minutes a long ball forward by Louis Harris found Butlin inside the right of the box, he held the ball up before turning and firing in a low drive that was pushed away at full stretch by Evans.

A clever right wing move on 24 minutes involving Jamie Ashmore, Dubidat and Tom Turton saw the latter cross to the far post, the ball skimming off the top of the head of Dave Bellis.  three minutes later another intricate right wing move saw Deards find Dubidat who released Ashmore, he found Turton whose first time effort was charged down.

On 28 minutes a 30 yard free kick right of centre by Butlin was superbly pushed around his left hand post by Evans at full stretch.

With 36 minutes gone and Zack Foster raced clear wide left, his cross to the far post headed over the angle by Dubidat.

Two free kicks on the right edge of the box were both hit into the defensive wall by Butlin in the 40th and 41st minute, both easily cleared.

Two minutes into the second half Adams released Aiton wide right, he cut inside and his superb chip saw Evans jack-knife backwards to claw the ball away.

On 53 minutes a pinpoint ball by Ryan Winwood released Turton into the right of the box, his low driven cross put behind by Adams to deny Dubidat. From the left wing corner Andy Parsons bulleted a header home to put Church ahead.

Wood should have equalised on 65 minutes, a ball into the right of the box caused panic, Adams saw his goalbound effort deflect up in the air to the far post. Butlin first to the ball to stab it onto the post and in the scramble that developed the ball was somehow kept out and eventually hacked clear.

On 68 minutes Josh March raced into the right of the box to hit a rising drive over the near angle.  On 79 minutes the ball was moved quickly left to right across the face of the box and out to Ashmore, he crossed into the near post and substitute Mike Wardle headed home.  5 minutes later Turton crossed to the far post from wide left, the ever alert Wardle headed the ball back into the centre and Dubidat headed home number four to give the final score an extremely flattering look.

Both teams played some good football, the game hinged on the 65th minute incident, the ball somehow staying out. Two all at that stage would have put the leaders in two minds but they were able to go for the win, however, four-one, now that was so very cruel.

It’s Shepshed Dynamo at home for Wood next on Saturday 11th February 2017.

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

Alvechurch – Evans, Ashmore, Foster, Turton, Parsons, Willetts (captain), Bellis, Winwood, Dubidat, Deards, March, Edmunds, Edwards, Smith, Wardle, Cresswell.

Walsall Wood – Jenkins, Adams, Deakin, Cleet, Bains, Wood, Shaw, L. Harris, Butlin (captain), Aiton, Mansell, Molesworth, Jackson, Juxon, Rickards, Gwilliams.

Walsall Wood are a good team and an excellent, community-spirited club. They need and deserve our support.

As ever, thanks to Bill for the report – always appreciated – for The Good of the Wood!

Marvellous medicines, curious chemists and peaky pets

picture2

If your budgie was looking a bit peaky about the beak, just the thing. Very probably from Ecob’s, the bottle never seems to have been opened. Item shared by Lynn Lynn and photographed by David Evans.

Here’s an odd little one for a Saturday afternoon, that I’m hoping will generate some discussion, and act as a precursor to a fascinating and eclectic collection of material donated to the blog recently by new year quiz whizz Lynn Link via the young David Evans.

These two rather old medicines – one remarkably for your pet budgie – are believed to have both originated from Ecob’s Chemist in Walsall Wood – the Kurboil certainly did from the label.

I have been in touch with David Evans via my parents in law with some lovely old snippets of Walsall Wood history via my Grandad who kept three old biscuit tins full of paperwork including newspaper cuttings, shop receipts, dog licenses, payslips, tax everything from 1942 to 1970s.

There was a receipt there for my mom’s first bike and my little trike bike from when I was one.  This information only came to light when my Gran passed away before Christmas she was 93 years old and had lived in Walsall Wood all her life.  It was sad she would never talk about her early life much.

I will find out some photographs and more information to pass to David Evans hopefully he will put it all together to make a good story of life in the Wood.

There is indeed a great collection of stuff and I thank Lynn for her generous and thoughtful donations, and David’s work to tie them together – this stuff is invaluable and I’ll be featuring more over the coming weeks.

I’d be interested in what readers remember of pills, potions and tonics that were sold by local chemists. In a time before antibiotics and modern painkillers, the community chemist was often the purveyor of a variety of home-brew exotic medicines of varying efficacy. Who remembers Gentian Violet and the kids with purple feet, hands or heads as a result? Iodine perhaps? Zam-buk? (Incredibly, still available in some form).

Liniments were often popular with local sportsmen. Who made the best?

And did your budgie, dog, pigeon or cat frequently need a pick-me-up? Who made it and what was it?

On that subject, recently on a picture of Lichfield, Aer Reg commented on a local vet whose existence I was debating with a friend just the other day: Steele Bodger. Although his name sounds like an obscure leatherwork tool, this well respected animal doctor had a practice in Brownhills near Co-op corner on the Lichfield Road.

He was prominent enough to have his own Wikipedia entry which says:

Steele-Bodger was born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, the son of Harry Steele-Bodger, also a noted vet, and the elder brother of Micky Steele-Bodger, another vet and also England international rugby player. He was educated at Shrewsbury School before reading Natural Sciences at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge and qualifying as a vet at the Royal (Dick) Veterinary School, University of Edinburgh. He practised as a Veterinary Surgeon in Lichfield from 1948 until 1977 and then for two years in Fordingbridge, Hampshire.

In 1979 Steele-Bodger was appointed Professor of Veterinary Clinical Studies at the University of Cambridge, a post which he held until 1990.

Steele-Bodger was President of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association in 1962, President of the British Veterinary Association in 1965-66 and President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1972-73. He was awarded the CBE in 1980.

Steele-Bodger married Anne Finlayson in 1948 and they had three daughters. He died in Monmouth on 17 September 2008

Please folks, any memories or comments on the above welcome, and as ever, my thanks to Lynn and David. I hear from Lynn that the beer prize went down well with her husband!

Feel free to join the conversation: comment here please, or email me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

A new postcard from the past

untitled-9

Looking down Vicarage Road towards the Mill at Catshill: a previously unknown to me card from Brownhills. Image kindly supplied by reader Peter.

I really thought I was familiar with all the local old postcards, but every now and then a new one pops up that surprises me, which makes me wonder how many more are out there waiting to be found – and so it is with this one sent to me by reader and friend of the blog Peter.

This undated card was quickly photographed at a local sale recently and shows Vicarage Road, Brownhills. looking considerably more bucolic than it does today – initially I couldn’t place it, and Google Streetview as no help as it doesn’t cover this area. The best image I can come up with is from Bing! maps Birdseye view:

untitled-9

Note the large house, centre – the black and white eave detail and chimneys indicate this is the one on the card, without the surrounding development.

This confirms clearly that the card is looking down Vicarage Road to Ogley Road, and if clear, would show the mill at Catshill. I’d imagine the date to be around 1910-1930.

Thanks to Peter for the contribution and if anyone has any comments, they’d be most welcome: either here, or to BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

An enduring history

chasewater-2-1

The endurance boat as it finished the 7day trial. Image very kindly supplied by David Hughes – please click for a larger version.

There are two subjects I really wish I could feature more of here on the Brownhills Blog – recent, postwar history and images of Chasewater, and more on local industry, like the BRD – well, today I get to feature both are reader David Hughes recently sent me the following article out of the blue, and it tells of a bit of local history I didn’t know: the BRD in Aldridge experimented with boat motors.

Thanks to David for a wonderfully informative article, and for highlighting the innovative nature of local industry. I nearby appeal for scans of the BRD book if anyone can manage it as I think it would be a lovely addition to the works here on the blog, and I know many readers are interested in the history of the company.

David Hughes wrote:

Chasewater and  the BRD

In the late 1950s the BRD Company in Aldridge started to develop an outboard motor for powerboats.

chasewater-1-1

Early (cold) days in the building of the powerboat club. Image very kindly supplied by David Hughes – please click for a larger version.

The engine was called the Bermuda. I was told at the time that the name was chosen because it was ‘exotic’ and contained the letters BRD in order.

After the Staffordshire Hydroplane Boating Club gave their permission, most of the engine testing was carried out at Chasewater.  The Bermuda project team spent many days testing the prototype engines and entered them in many powerboat races held at Chasewater. In 1961 they were 1st and 2nd fastest in the ‘D’ class times in the boat builder trials at Chasewater.

Boats preparing for one of the races at Chasewater. Image very kindly supplied by David Hughes – please click for a larger version.

However, the most exciting test was the one which took place around November 1961 when a team of 20 men took turns to drive a twin Bermuda engine boat round Chasewater for 24 hour a day for 7 days. They covered around 4000 miles. This kind of endurance test had never been done before and gave the company national and international attention.

My father, Reg Hughes, was a development engineer on the Bermuda project and was one of the drivers. He drove the boat on the night shift and it was an experience he would never forget.

Four of the BRD staff involved in the project including my father on the right and I think that second from the left is the ex-speedway rider Vic Emms. Image very kindly supplied by David Hughes – please click for a larger version.

As a result of his involvement with the project our family often found itself at Chasewater watching the racing and sometimes manning the rescue boats. We also spent many weekends in Aberdovey where the salt water testing took place.

I hope this is of interest

Back in the black

tumblr_novrtykhs11qib2vgo1_1280

This is the pair at JCB in Rochester, whom I spotted in 2015. The thing I love most about these enigmatic birds is their Adam Ant-style white bill stripe.

Today (Monday, 30th January 2017) I was contacted by Irene ‘The Swan Lady’ Hodges who was in a state of some enthusiasm, as amongst her usual daily cohort of swans and waterfowl at Chasewater, there was a single black swan, which she fed and caught on video.

Black swans are infrequent visitors to Chasewater, and the only birds I know to locally dwell at Hanch Hall near Armitage and on the lake in front of the JCB works at Rochester in Staffordshire. To have them here at all is a rare delight, and the last occurrence was in 2014, again spotted and recorded by the Swan Lady herself.

Irene and her husband spend a whole lot of time (and very probably cash, too) feeding the swans and waterfowl at Chasewater, keeping an eye on them in general and monitoring their wellbeing.

If anyone else has photos or footage of this gorgeous bird, please do comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

It’s worth reading up on Black Swans – they’re native to the Antipodes but there were less than 50 feral birds in the UK in 2004.

Thanks to all involved – and especially The Swan Lady herself, for doing such wonderful and selfless work out of the kindness of her heart. Cheers, Irene!

Back to the 90s

untitled-9

A curious bit of early 1990s video posted on YouTube by Craig Niven.

Just a quick one spotted on YouTube by friend of the blog Jayne Preston today – a most curious bit of video, recorded in July, 1992.

The video posted by user Craig Niven seems to be connected with local police at the time – almost 25 years ago – and shows Lichfield mainly, although late on there’s a very interesting trip down Brownhills High Street and into the car park at the back of Brownhills Police Station which was then still fully.operational.

Fans of cars of the period and the long, thankfully lost Austin Montego – may also find some gold in there. Anyone any idea where the lanes are the police were filming in?

Thanks of the spot, Jayne, that took me right back.

Comments invited – either here, or to BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Mind how you go, now.

In the first serialised article of what will turn out to be quite a few, here’s the first three photos from Walsall Wood Secondary School in the 1950s with accompanying notes, as introduced last week in this blog post here – This time, I am including the handwritten notes by Tony himself below each image.

I shall post the photos in batches of three so we aren’t swamped with too much information at once – and these ones all feature staff lineups.

Thank you.

Please, any comments, contributions or observations welcome. Either comment here, or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Walsall Wood suffer January jinx as they lose to St. Andrews

Yesterday afternoon (Saturday 28th January 2017) Walsall Wood F.C. played Leicester newcomers St. Andrews FC away, and sadly failed to break the January jinx that seems to have descended.

Thankfully, a better day for the reserve team who battled Lichfield City at Oak Park to win 4-0, a game David Evans attended and sent the gallery from below. I also hear the flames – the Wood under-6s team – did very well. Perhaps we should give them a go up front…

Images and captions from Walsall Wood Reserves v Lichfield City kindly supplied by the young David Evans.

Bill Shaw submitted the following match report from Leicester:

Hiya Bob,

Five-one down with 23 minutes to go it could have been extremely embarrassing, but Wood finished well. With new signings due in the next few days they are interesting times to be involved at the Wood, it’s not easy to keep the faith I know, but stay behind the team, things will improve, would I lie to you?

Don’t expect miracles, Alvechurch isn’t the place to go for rehabilitation, but after that its Shepshed Dynamo, Coventry United and Quorn in February, so just stay in there folks.

St. Andrews 5 v 2 Walsall Wood

Wood said goodbye to January 2017 with their seventh consecutive defeat, they again scored first and last but in between were given a lesson in finishing by this seasons Leicester newcomers to the Midland League.

Wood carved out the first opening when on three minutes Surafel Behailu hit a superb ball into the centre from wide left to pick out Drew Aiton who cut inside only to see his low drive blocked. Two minutes later Aiton released Louis Harris wide right, he raced into the box and crossed low into the centre, Charlie Shaw steered the ball past keeper Warren Butlin, Justin Peace helped the ball into the corner of the net.

On 15 minutes a lovely through ball by Harris was collected at pace by Joey Butlin who was brought down just outside the box, the free kick hammered into the defensive wall.

On 22 minutes left wing pressure had Wood in trouble and they couldn’t get the ball away. Sam Hollis took charge wide left, crossed into the centre and Pearce scored at the right end to tie the scores.

A weak clearance by keeper Butlin a minute later went straight to Harris on halfway, he hit a first time effort well wide.

Three minutes later a left wing corner was punched clear by Wood keeper Andy Hughes, Elliott Puttnum chipping the ball just wide of the left hand post.  On 33 minutes Leon Dougherty was released into the right of the box by Shay Brennan, his low drive saved at the second attempt by Hughes. Four minutes later a neat left wing move ended with Puttnum turning and firing in a low drive to bring a full length save from Hughes. On 41 minutes Puttnum was found wide left, he crossed into the centre, Brennan flicked the ball to the right of the six yard box to Ryan Hodkinson to fire back across goal two-one. Wood finished the half camped on the edge of the home box but couldn’t make the all important breakthrough as shots were bravely charged down.

Wood should have equalised four minutes into the second half, a low drive by Josh Mansell through a packed box was spilled by keeper Butlin, Shaw first to react but lifting the ball over the top of the bar.

On 58 minutes Puttnum hit a ball wide left to put Hollis racing clear, he cut inside and his low cross was slotted home by Warren. Four minutes later Hollis made the left byeline, his cross headed inches wide by Warren.  64 minutes gone, a left wing corner played short to Hodkinson on the left of the box, his low drive finding the far corner of the net. Three minutes later Brennan raced into the left of the box and went down under a challenge from keeper Hughes. He got up to despatch the penalty making it three goals in a crazy nine minute spell.

A minute later Aiton crossed from wide right, Leon Taylor flicking a header just over the far angle. Four minutes later a long Hughes clearance was headed on by Taylor to Butlin wide right, he cut inside, keeper Butlin with a full length save.  On 80 minutes Taylor was released into the right of the box only to roll a cross shot the wrong side of the post. Seven minutes later an incisive run left of centre by Mansell saw his ball inside flicked on by Butlin to find Taylor who was brought down on the right of the box.  Butlin despatching the resultant penalty.

Wood started the better, they finished the better, pity about what happened in between.  The difference was that  10 minute spell early in the second half with them shipping 3 goals in that time, they could have given up at that point but kept trying and could have had more than the consolation penalty at the end.

No easy start to February for Wood with them at Alvechurch on the 4th.

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

St. Andrews – Butlin, Hodkinson, Puttnum, Johnson, Peace, Preston (captain), Morgan, Hurst, Brennan, Warner, Hollis, Latham, Towers, Nyarko, Dougherty.

Walsall Wood – Hughes, Mansell, Adams, L. Harris, Bains, Cleet, Behailu, Shaw, Butlin (captain), Aiton, Dell, Wright, Jackson, Taylor, H. Harris, Rickards.

Thanks to Bill and David for the reports – always appreciated – for The Good of the Wood!

A found connection

14231950_10154541839169686_7567031546792607319_o

A brilliant 1955 photo from Patricia Cotton, showing Dora Rathbone, nee Hemming, her son Bob and Patricia Cotton’s brother, Tony, paddling in the canal near the Jolly Collier. On the horizon is an rather interesting structure… Image very kindly supplied by Patricia Cotton.

Way back last year, Patricia Cotton sent in the above photo of her brother Tony, family friends Dora Rathbone and her son Bob enjoying a picnic and a paddle in 1955 by the canal in Brownhills, aroundabout where the banks of the old clay pit are today.

The photo is a wonderful period image – but what made it doubly interesting was it gave a date that the remains of the South Staffordshire Water surge stack was at least still extant to, although greatly truncated.

This chimney-like stack, stack, subject of intense debate, and rediscovered thanks to water historians David Moore and Chris Pattison has been a recurring theme here on the blog. We established that the 100 foot high chimney-like structure, once present next to the railway embankment by the canal just near to the Pelsall Road in Brownhills, had been truncated at some point.

Exactly when this odd landmark was finally removed once and for all has been the subject of much debate.

Shortly after I featured Pat’s photo last September, the Clayhnager Kid himself, Brian Stringer mailed me to point out he’d found the broken pipe that used to connect to the stack, still buried on the old rail embankment, which Brian has worked so hard to clear for cyclists and walkers.

Brian said:

stack

I wonder how much of the original water main remains buried in the embankment? Image kindly supplied by Brian Stringer, and carelessly forgotten by me.

Hello Bob

What a delightful photo Pat has sent in. It’s an idyllic look into my childhood.

I remember swimming in the canal by the stack but didn’t realise how enormous it was pre-my day. A close up of the photo shows the relief pipe coming out of the railway embankment and last year while working on the old railway track I discovered the bottom half of the pipe still in the ground.

14231950_10154541839169686_7567031546792607319_o

You can see the pipe clearly on this blown-up segment of Pat’s photo.

I promised Bob a photo so here it is. I’ll make sure I clear the area a bit next week.

Brian

Sadly, I overlooked Brian’s mail until he reminded me earlier today with a comment here – sorry Brian, most remiss of me – my humble apologies, and thanks for a very significant and quite important find! If the weather isn’t too bad I’ll go looking myself soon to see if I can locate said pipe.

Just so we know what we’re all taking about, I feature an image of the complete stack from the Clayhanger side of the railway. It was quite something in its day.

Thanks and apologies to Brian for my overlooking an excellent contribution. If you have anything to add, please do: either comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Brownhills Surge Stack

This 100ft stack was a pressure relief ventilator for the South Staffordshire Water main between Lichfield and the Black Country, and sat at the highest point of the pipe. When it was demolished is hotly disputed. Image posted by Dave Moore on Flickr.

Showing some more class

norton-canes-1955

Norton Canes Primary School class image from 1955 or 56: Image kindly supplied by Alan Harvey – recognise anyone? Alan is second from right, back row. Click for a larger version.

Following on from the recent school photos, and as a precursor to some more Walsall Wood ones tomorrow, I thought I’d share the image above from old friend of the blog Alan Harvey, and a note about the image further down the post, spotted in last weeks Tony Portman gallery by Phil Smith.

Alan sent in the photo of Norton Canes County Primary and said:

Hi Bob

I have attached a photo of the class of 1955 or 1956 at Norton Canes Primary School. I’m back row second from the right. I can name others if people are interested.

Alan Harvey

Well Alan, we’d all be very interested in any names you can add, or contributions from anyone else for that matter! All responses welcome, and thanks for sending in a lovely image. Always appreciated.

Meanwhile, Phil Smith mailed me in relation to this post from last week:

Hi BrownhillsBob,

My dad, Ron Smith, is in one of the photos you included in your article “Class photos”! (Fourth from the left, back row.)

He was a PE teacher at Walsall Wood Secondary School in the 1950s and it looks like he’s in his tracksuit!

Ron is 89 now, and still lives in the area. I now live in Chicago, Illinois, so it was a great surprise to see his photo on the web!

Thanks to all involved in sharing these photos.
Phil Smith

Thanks Phil – that’s remarkable and wonderful, and I love that this was spotted so far away in America – one of the things that gives me most pleasure curating this thing is that it so often connects people physically so far apart.

Ron does indeed look like a sporty chap, and one of the reasons I like the Portman set so much is the people pictured – both staff and kids – look generally very relaxed and comfortable with themselves. It really is a revelation.

Thanks to Alan and Phil, and if anyone has anything to add, please do – you’re most welcome. Either comment here, or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers all.

Can you help put a PC in the shed, please?

14444879_1817252725177399_1043356675513650521_o

The Shed recently had some great tools donated! Image from their Facebook page.

An enquiry reaches me from the wonderful Aldridge Men’s Shed project via Area Manager John Morris: the group are after an old PC or laptop computer for group use that could be donated – perhaps you’re offloading one you don’t need anymore?

Aldridge Mens Shed is going from strength to strength, and meets every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30am – 12:30 and 13:00 – 16:00 at Alrewych Court on Northgate – Between Walsall Wood and Aldridge.

You can find out more at their website here and their Facebook page here.

Every time I mention the shed I get ladies complaining that it’s not for them – it is, and ladies are very much welcome!

John said:

Good afternoon,

The recently formed Aldridge Shed group are on the look out for a laptop or desktop computer for their group to use.

Ideally they would like something that can be donated, by an individual or organisation that is disposing of one.

If you can help, please either reply to me or contact the group – aldridgeshed@gmail.com.

Many thanks…

So please – if you can help the group, please do – I love the concept of this project and love hearing about what those involved get up to!

My original post on the Shed project is below:

For a few moths now I’ve been following news of a new project starting in Aldridge to create a Men’s Shed, and after a whole lot of really hard graft by people from loads of different organisations, Aldridge Men’s Shed now has premises, and organisation and opening dates!

Men’s Sheds (and they’re not just open to men – the ladies can join too – if fact, some of the committee are ladies!) started in Australia a couple of decades ago and provide creative activities, a social focus and space just to hang out, chat and create for older members of the society who feel they’ve got lots to give the community.

I love the idea of Men’s Sheds – I love to do mechanics and make stuff and I could see myself joining such a project at some point.

This morning, I had the following email from Area Manager John Morris:

Good morning all,

I bring you the excellent news that Aldridge Shed now has a premises to operate from!

Although it may seem a long time since the public meeting to discuss the Men’s Shed for Aldridge (12th February, 2016) there has been a tremendous amount of work going on behind the scenes since then, to get to where we are today. We do have a brand new, constituted group called The Aldridge Shed, that has 7 committee members, plus 3 co-opted members and now the group have secured premises from which to operate the Aldridge Shed, which will be Alrewych Court, Northgate. We also need to point out that the shed is for all, in fact 2 of the committee members are ladies, so this group is open to anyone, with no discrimination.

I know that there are around 30 people that signed up at the last public meeting to say they would be interested in attending the shed once it is up and running, and I also know that a number of local partners and organisations are very keen to know what’s happening with the progress of the Aldridge Shed, as they will want to refer people to the shed, especially people who may be suffering from social isolation and loneliness.

The Aldridge Shed committee would like to extend a welcome to everyone to come along and see the new premises and find out what the group are offering. There will be a series of 3 dates:

· Tuesday, 7th June (10am – 3pm)
· Wednesday, 8th June (10am – 3pm)
· Thursday, 9th June (10am -3pm)

During these days, anyone is welcome to drop-in to have a look around, have a chat, find out more information about the shed and sign-up for membership.

The actual location of the shed will be in the old day centre within Alrewych Court, which has its own entrance, store room and toilets. Signage will be provided on these days, to make it easy for you to find the “shed”. Alrewych Court also offers an “open to the public” restaurant that operates between 12noon – 2pm.

If you have any questions about the shed, or about the open days that are mentioned above, please email aldridgeshed@gmail.com. The chair of the group is Ivor Anderson.

And finally, the committee will need to fund raise and apply for funds in order to sustain the group. If you are in a position to help, please do let us know.

If any local business is in a fortunate position to be able to help out, with either cash or supplies, please do get in touch and let us know. We will promote any business that helps out the group.
Also, if you have any old tools, materials, in fact anything that you think might be useful to the group, please drop us an email and let us know.

We hope that you are able to join us on the 7th / 8th / 9th June, and we look forward to seeing you and beginning the next step of this amazing adventure.
Many thanks…

I’d like to thank John for this update, and look forward to seeing the results – this really is a wonderful initiative and a great thing for an often overlooked and under appreciated section of society.

Looks like a fine event!

Facebook pal of the blog Mark Poole has asked me to shout out to readers that he’s staging an event in Walsall Arboretum this coming May Bank Holiday (29th May 2017) in aid of the Laradorsinneed.co.uk charity, and wonders if anyone would like to take out a stall?

At Tails in the Park 2017 there will be dog shows, activities for kids, entertainment and all the usual stuff – as well of lots of great Labs. So if you’d like a stall at a busy summer event, this could be the thing for you.

Mark has asked that anyone interested contact him through the event’s Facebook page here where you can find out more, as well as lots about the project supported.

Come on, everyone loves a Labrador!

Bad luck continues for Wood as Highgate triumph

P1000595

The Wood’s run of bad luck continues…

Tuesday evening (24th January 2017) saw Walsall Wood face Solihull’s Highgate United at Oak Park where sadly, the Woodmen lost – it’s fair to say Bill Shaw was not amused.

Bill wrote:

Hiya Bob,

Another night of heartache for Wood, yet again a much changed side because of new signings unable to play because of being cup-tied. The opposition as usual incorporating wind up as a 12th man had literally got away with murder, but a referee can’t send someone off for an elbow in the face if he doesn’t see the incident.

Anyway Bob, I didn’t want my last game to be at the Bescot Stadium.

The forecast here is for sub-zero temperatures over the next few days, so Saturday looks doubtful, but who knows.

Walsall Wood 1 v 2 Highgate United

Wood down to 10 men battled back from a goal behind suffered 82nd minute heartbreak when skipper Josh Hawker hammered home a header down from Wood’s nemesis Lei Brown.  Already without five of Saturdays starting line up because of ineligibility Wood had battled and looked to be taking the tie to at least extra time but then up stepped that man Brown – Browned off? you bet.

Lei Brown was involved after just three minutes when he was fouled wide left, the free kick delivered to the far post, Brown putting a header inches wide.

On 11 minutes a misplaced clearance by keeper Brendan Bunn went out to Joey Butlin wide right, his cheeky effort from 45 yards going just wide. Four minutes later a clever ball on halfway by Louis Harris put Liam Molesworth into the right of the box, his rising cross shot fired over the far post.  On half an hour a central free kick fell for Drew Aiton in the box, his snap shot bringing a full length save from Bunn. Two minutes later Butlin released Aiton wide left, his far post cross picked out Molesworth who planted a header straight into the grateful arms of keeper Bunn.

A minute later skipper Josh Hawker delivered a right wing free kick to the far post, keeper Andy Hughes taking the ball under intense pressure from Trevor Edwards. Three minutes later McCauley Manning crossed from wide right, Edwards powering a header over.  Right on half time a free kick on the left edge of the box was taken by Edwards, flying off the outside of the left hand post.

The first action of the second half came on 52 minutes; a long clearance was headed on by Manning to put Lei Brown into the right of the box, keeper Hughes with a brave save.  A quick counter attack four minutes later saw Ricardo Ricketts outnumbered three-one as Lei Brown raced through the middle into the D and was pulled back by the defender, who was harshly red carded.  Hawker fired in the central 20 yard free kick, Hughes making a superb save to push the ball over the top.  The left wing flag kick delivered to the far post for Lei Brown to force a header home.

On 60 minutes an intercept on halfway by Rikki Bains saw him release Butlin wide right, his whipped low cross put behind by Scott Turner to deny Aiton. With 72 minutes gone Craig Deakin raced forward and fed Aiton wide right, he cut inside and set up Butlin to race for goal only for him to fire wide under pressure from three defenders. A minute later Aiton ran at the defence and set up Mansell, Bunn saving bravely at his feet. Three minutes later Butlin put Aiton racing clear wide right, his low driven cross hammered home by the tireless Butlin to put Wood deservedly level. Five minutes later Aiton raced inside from wide left, his low cross shot well held by Bunn.

On 82 minutes Lei Brown won a left wing free kick (sound familiar), the free kick delivered beyond the far post, Lei Brown nodded the ball down for Hawker to sweep the ball home from close range.

Wood at least deserved to take the tie into extra time but they can now concentrate on building a competitive team.  Weather permitting, Minus five degrees in the daytime forecast in Leicestershire tomorrow it’s St. Andrews next on Saturday before February starts with an away day to Alvechurch on Saturday 4th.

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

Walsall Wood – Hughes, Mansell, Deakin, Juxon, Bains, Adams, Molesworth, L. Harris, Butlin (captain), Taylor, Aiton, Ricketts, Henry Harris, Hayles, Okojie, Harry Harris.

Highgate Utd. – Bunn, Pendley, Pulisciano, Cole, Turner, T. Edwards, A. Brown, Hawker (captain), Adaggio, Manning, L. Brown, Loney, Hayward, D. Edwards, Knight.

Walsall Wood Football Club are a top local side with a big-hearted faithful who know how to have a great time supporting their lads, and welcome all comers to come enjoy great local soccer. The boys from The Wood have been at the heart of the local community for a century or more, so please do go check out a match or two if you’re curious.

I guarantee you’ll have more fun cheering on the local chaps than you ever will watching the over-priced prima donnas on TV…

Bogus fencing contractors operating locally again – please be careful!

bogus2

Warn your elderly and vulnerable friends and neighbours about bogus callers. Library image from NEN.

A headsup, folks – seeing a lot of reports of distraction theft and bogus callers operating in the area, particularly Aldridge in the last 48 hours (25th January 2017) – elderly folk have been prey to a man in a white van who’s pressing victims to pay for non-existent fencing jobs.

A typical report posted of Facebook yesterday said:

Please be vigilant an elderly gentlemen was targeted this morning by a man in a white van saying there are fence problems and he can get it fixed for a decent sum of money.

The gentleman was not harmed just very frightened so please warn elderly neighbours family friends etc. and if not already been done make sure all elderly family members have chains on their doors.

Similarly…

My 90 year old mom had a man call this morning in a white van, saying he was doing fencing, silly girl never asked for ID and he didn’t offer any, he never went outside to look at her fencing, he blagged his way in as she was not long up and got very flustered, he looked down the garden and said one of her posts was rotten. Then he left, we are not sure whether to contact the police or not, surely if he was ligit he would have left a card?

Also…

They conned a man who lives opposite me of £500 this morning. They said his fence needed doing, followed him upstairs and took the money and scarpered, police are involved.

Please tell your relatives and neighbours about these ratbags, and impress upon them how important it is not to buy from, or accept services at the door, no matter how plausible the people offering them. Genuine companies will always contact you by other means.

Explain that no official body will turn up unannounced demanding money for services like  fencing repairs, drain cleaning, tree pruning etc., and that if they are at all unsure of any caller, to close the door and contact the police.

Scumbags engaged in the robbing of OAPs are lower than a snake’s knees, and I hope the police continue to crack down on this cowardly, nasty crime.

Please,  if you have any further information relating to this, or any other incident, or if you witnessed something  please contact Walsall Police by dialling 101 (999 in an emergency, obviously) or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111

Fancy a run tonight?

Once you start, you’ll just keep on running… Image from Chasewater Running Club.

I note from social media that there’s a very active running club in the locality and I just thought I’d sound the headsup for readers, as I know that the sport is increasing in popularity, and many beginners who’ve been enjoying park runs and the like are after clubs to join and improve their skill.

Chasewater Running Club have a run tonight, Wednesday 25th January 2016, departing from the old Police Station in Brownhills (Chester Road North, opposite The Hussey Arms) at 6:30pm.

They said:

Wednesday night runners: Looking forward to seeing you all 6.30pm at Brownhills police station. There will be a variety of distance options from 5K upwards.

Please don’t forget Hi-viz and/or lights are essential 😀
See you there.

Chasewater – your chance to have a say

tumblr_odp8f40m4n1qib2vgo2_1280

People love Chasewater for a whole range of different activities – from waterspouts….

There’s been a whole heap of fuss lately over the badly-publicised possibility of car parking charges being introduced at Chasewater, which has turned out to be not happening before public consultation, despite what posters put up around the site said.

This article was published a couple of weeks ago in the Cannock Chase Chronicle:

No Parking fees at Chasewater

Council bosses have announced that parking charges are not about to be introduced at Chasewater – but admitted that they may be in the future.

Signs put up at the beauty spot informed visitors that they would have to pay to leave their cars from this year.

However, Staffordshire County Council which manages Chasewater, have now confirmed that those signs have been taken down and that charges would not be introduced without a public consultation first.

Councillor Mark Winnington, economic growth chief, said: ‘We already charge at some of our car parks including Marquis Drive and Milford Common on Cannock Chase and are looking at the possibility of extending this to other car parks.

‘We are exploring the possibility of introducing a small charge for parking at Chasewater. The car parking fees will help to ensure we can run the park safely, as well as being able to use funds to reinvest in the park.

With another stunning PR triumph for the Park Management there, it’s to my relief that they’re now actually attempting to engage with the public by other means than merely stapling unfortunately-worded missives to trees: the wonderful Kate ‘Cardigan’ Gomez from Lichfield Lore (and Lichfield Discovered, of course) has been working on a survey to gauge park user’s views on a range of issues, and is inviting readers and park users to complete it.

Your views will count. You can visit the survey hat this link here.

Kate had this to say:

tumblr_odp8f40m4n1qib2vgo7_1280

…To wildlife.

Hi Bob

Working in conjunction with Staffordshire County Council, we’re doing some community consultation and development work at Chasewater about how people use the site, how they’d like to see it develop in the future and what, if any role they might like to play in that. We’ve created an online survey to gather people’s view and there will also be paper copies available at various sites across Chasewater in due course. It was also a good opportunity to seek people’s views about the idea of car parking charges.

If you could share the survey, that’d be great. The online link is here. We also have two events planned to try and bring the community together, and I’ll let you know full details about these shortly. One is a microfunding event in March, called Chasewater Soup and the other, planned for the Summer, is a local history event about old photographs and memories of the park, called ‘Postcards from Chasewater’.

This is really just the start of the work and there are a lot of people we need to speak to, but wanted to give you a heads up about what’s going on, and also to ask for your help in promoting it, if you’re happy to.

Any questions about anything, just give me a shout,
Thanks as ever,
Kate Cardigan

I wholly support what Kate’s doing and always advise any interested party with five minutes to spare to complete consultation questionnaires: Contrary to popular belief these things do make a difference and its important our voices are heard.

While we’re on the subject of Chasewater I noticed this appeal for volunteers to man work parties at the park – they’re great fun, do essential work and are also a great way to get exercise, fresh air and meet new pals.

Why not give it a punt?

Chasewater needs you!

Still looking for Andrew Cooper: a former Walsall man missing form Stourport

I make no apologies for running this again – please keep an eye out for the above chap, Andrew Cooper who’s still missing from his home in Stourport as he has been since Wednesday 4th January 2017 – Andrew is a gentleman from Walsall originally and his  family, friends and people who used to work with him are desperately concerned for his welfare.

West Mercia Police wrote:

Appeal to find missing Stourport man

West Mercia Police is appealing to the public to help locate a missing Stourport man.

Andrew Cooper, aged 44, was last seen at his home in Stourport on Wednesday morning (4 January) but did not show up for work on that day and he has not returned home since.

Andrew is described as approximately 5’9″ and of a slim build. He has short grey spiked hair and a beard, with brown eyes. He normally wears glasses and a silver wedding ring, a black leather plaited bracelet and a silver ring on his right hand. He speaks with a Walsall accent.

Andrew was last seen wearing blue jeans, an orange t-shirt with stripes, a medium blue padded puffa jacket with a white sheepskin lining and tan Caterpillar work boots. He has tattoos on his chest and shoulders.

Police and Andrew’s family are growing concerned for his welfare. If you have seen Andrew or a man matching his description, please call West Mercia Police on 101.

Issued: 9.10am, Friday 6 January, Holly Claydon-Bevan, Corporate Communications.

It’s very possible Andrew could have returned to Walsall, so please do keep an eye out – there clearly a lot of love and respect for him here, and his family and freiends are very concerned.

Anyone with information should call West Mercia Police on 101 or the Missing People charity on 116 000.

I love this photo. I know it’s disrespectful, but the inner miscreant in me so wants the lady to be working on an illicit still. Image very kindly supplied by David Evans, generously donated by Tony Portman. Click for a larger version.

This is a taster of a truly remarkable piece of local history that David Evans has been granted access to by it’s owner, Tony Portman – we have a collection of photos of life at Walsall Wood Secondary School in the 1950s.

What’s remarkable about the photos – over 30 in number – is that Tony has painstakingly documented them. But just as a taster for now, I’m going to share some raw images. I will then post a selection with the full notes every weekend. That way full discussions can ensue and no gems get overlooked.

If you want to go location spotting, see this post here where David returns to the school (now the Walsall Wood Youth Club) a couple of years ago.

Intersting comparisons too to the school photos from Shire Oak Grammar in 1964 here and 1962 here.

My thanks to David for great scans and hard work, as usual, but also to Tony for a wonderful act of felicity and generosity.

Just feast your eyes on these. Bring back memories? Comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Oak Park misery continues as Mikes master Wood

Heavy grey sky to herald todays match at the Theatre of Dreams, Oak Park

Dark times at the Wood, but here’s to the recovery. Image supplied by David Evans.

The faith of the faithful at Oak Park is being severely tested at the moment as the Woodmen seem to be enduring a losing streak, this time to long-term combatants The Mikes yesterday afternoon (Saturday 21st January 2017).

No pictures today as David Evans has got ill with a nasty cold – I join with all the readership in wishing him a swift recovery.

Bill Shaw was there, and as usual, didn’t mince his words:

Hiya Bob,

No excuses I’m afraid, when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, it just did. Losing to two very poor sides in the space of four days is hard to take, but at least Wood are in transition after the managerial change, the visitors have no such excuse.

Ten points is the difference between Wood in 10th and Stourport Swifts in 20th, so we aren’t in danger – yet.

League Cup quarter final action on Tuesday night at the Wood as we look for a change of fortune in 2017.

Walsall Wood 0 v 2 Boldmere St. Michaels

This victory together with Stourport only drawing at Rocester saw Boldmere climb out of the bottom three on goal difference.  With Wood struggling for goals it was ironic that the two scorers Joe Lyng and Max Black had both left for Boldmere this season.

Wood’s new signing Dominic Dell nearly made the perfect start, first he won a left wing free kick on two minutes, the ball flew around the box, eventually dropping for Dell in the D, his low drive through a packed area saved at full stretch by keeper Stuart Parsons.

On nine minutes Max Black wide left played the ball inside to find Alex Forde to fire a first time effort well over.

With 22 minutes gone and Josh Mansell intercepted a ball on halfway and hit a peach of a long ball to pick out Dell wide left, he cut inside to bring another good save from Parsons. Six minutes later Mansell ran on from halfway, played a clever one-two with Joey Butlin, his low drive deflecting off a defender to give Parsons an easy save four minutes later Wood keeper Lewis Gwilliams and two of his defenders made a mess of a clearance, the ball going to Forde who from 35 yards out fired wide of an empty net.  Well into first half injury time a right wing corner to the near post saw a scramble develop, the visitors taking the lead with their only shot of the half on target when Joe Lyng fired home from close range.

Within five minutes of the restart Ben Usher-Shipway released Forde into the left of the box, but he rolled his cross shot wide.  On 55 minutes a lovely, intricate one touch move wide right saw the ball played into the centre of the box to find Black who swept the ball home to double the visitors lead. Nine minutes later Remi Bell crossed from wide left to find Alister Brauns in the D, his first time through ball kicked clear by Gwilliams to deny Black.

On 70 minutes a right wing counter attack down the Wood right ended with Butlin holding the ball up before turning and firing in a low drive that was well held by Parsons. After 90 minutes Mansell released Liam Molesworth into the right of the box only for him to fire a cross shot wide.

It’s no secret after this game why both teams are struggling, Boldmere only had two shots on target, both went home.  Wood’s frailty in front of goal was obvious again, but keeper Stuart Parsons was equal to everything they threw at him. So it’s still pointless in 2017 for Wood as they regroup for the league cup quarter final against Highgate United on Tuesday 24th.

The Black month ends with a visit to St. Andrews of Leicester on Saturday.

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

Walsall Wood – Gwilliams, Deakin, Hayles, Juxon, Bains, Wood, Mansell, L. Harris, Butlin (captain), H. Harris, Dell, Molesworth, Jackson, Shaw, Wright, Taylor.

Boldmere St. Michaels – Parsons, Rosser, Bell, Smith (captain), Craven, Lyng, Skinner, Forde, Usher-Shipway, Brauns, Black, Male, Fitzmaurice, Leek, Wellington, Moreton.

Let’s hope things improve soon – for the good of the wood!

Thanks to Bill for another great review.

A mystery for the narrowboat folk

norman-chamberlain-480x378

A notable narrowboat photographed in a well-known spot from an unusual angle. What do you know? Image kindly supplied by Andy Dennis.

Here’s one I’ve been sitting on for a couple of weeks now, but it’s about time I shared this wonderful enquiry from the startlingly prolific Andy Dennis, who’s running a great local/genealogy/history blog that’s quite frankly, showing me a clean pair of heels at the moment.

Andy’s writing some great stuff – nip over and check it out here.

Anyway, on with the issue at hand: an interesting canal photo taken by Andy’s father, which I think we could do with knowing more about – and I’m sure there are folk amongst the readers who can help with it.

Andy wrote:

BRIDGE BY B’HILLS SMELTERS

The original print is none too sharp – safe to say Dad was no Lichfield or Liebowitz!

I recall vaguely seeing a TV documentary about the campaign to rescue the canal network which, in the 1950s, was disintegrating rapidly and I think Wynford-Vaughan Thomas and fellow commentator Audrey Russell took to the canals to play their part. That is all I have been able to find out.

Hopefully, someone out there will know more.

Norman ‘Wilt’ Chamberlain was a member of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team and one of the greatest of all time.

Best wishes
Andy

This is a very interesting image. I’m fairly sure that ‘Brownhills Smelters’ was Superalloys, the war scrap specialist beloved of local kinds for their remarkable collection of junk, and the bridge looks like Middleton Bridge under the Lichfield Road as viewed from the northern side. Here it is on Bing! Maps.

untitled-9

Fairly certain this is the same bridge. Opinions? Imagery from Bing! Maps.

Note the stepped parapet wall and white staining. It’s a very interesting angle as there’s no footpath that side and it would have been a hard spot to get to. I feel there’s a story there in itself.

Thanks to Andy for a wonderful enquiry – so what do you know? Any contributions welcome. Comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

And don’t forget to check out Andy’s work here.

Remember the man with the clipboard?

untitled-9

Some odd stuff going down in The Wood at the moment… Imagery from Apple Maps.

Interested to note that yesterday, local police finally issued an alert about the man with the clipboard panhandling for money in the Brownhills and Walsall Wood area, claiming his vehicle has been towed and he needs to get somewhere else – usually Willenhall.

We discussed this man here on January 7th 2017 after a number of concerned people contacted me, and whilst I realise the issue isn’t huge, it was causing significant concern; sadly, I have been informed that when people tried contacting police initially, their concerns were dismissed, names not taken and suggestions made that mountains were being made out of molehills.

Another PR win there for local police.

Thankful, yesterday (20th January 2017), the police finally issued an alert via WMNow, the local alert system I encourage you all to sign up for – it’s easy and free – go here to do so.

We have been made aware of a supicious Male in the Brownhills and Walsall Wood area. There have been several reports of a white male in his fifties with ginger/blonde hair, of average build and height. He was wearing a black bomber jacket, possibly has a northern accent and carrying a clip board.

He is stopping members of the public and saying his lorry has broken down and needs money to get to Willenhall.

Do not give this male any money and if he is seen or you have any information as to the identity of this man, please call the non emergency number 101.

Whilst I appreciate there may be more pressing matters, I feel it’s important for police to listen to their communities and this is clearly worrying a fair number of people. Dismissing their concerns out of hand doesn’t help anyone.

Please, if you have any information, do speak to the cops, and do report every incident – the more people report incidents, the more likely they are to be tackled.

If you know who the culprits might be, or if you saw anything at all, please do contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Image from Madwblog.

I see from the excellent Madwblog that there’s a New Year litter pick event going on in Clayhanger this Saturday morning (Saturday 21st January 2017) from 8:30 to 10:30am and all are welcome – kit and gloves provided!

This is being run by local community volunteers with the support of Walsall Council for the benefit of the community, so it’ll be a worthwhile event to get involved with and help improve the local environment!

Resolve this New Year to give some love back to Clayhanger Village by joining a litter pick.

It’s free, (you don’t have to sign up with an email address, remember a password or even give your name) it makes you feel good and it has an impact on the Village and the nature we share it with. Just turn up and get picking. The aim of this litter pick is to concentrate on the hedgerow along Bridge Street from The Spot to Clayhanger Bridge and then underneath Clayhanger Bridge.

The weather forecast is bright and clear for the morning. Make the most of it by joining the first Clayhanger community litter pick of 2017.

Guaranteed to make you feel good. 8.30-10.30 The Spot, Bridge Street, Clayhanger.

Bags and pickers provided by Walsall Council.

You can check out the event’s Facebook page here.

The previous events have been a huge success, so let’s see if we can make this one even better!

Sweet thing

Teddy Gray's Sweet Factory, Dudley, 2010

Teddy Gray’s Sweet Factory, Dudley, 2010. Image courtesy Martin Parr.

I was sad to note at the weekend that Ted Gray, of Black Country confectionary company Teddy Gray’s, had passed away in his sleep at the age of 81.

Teddy Grays is is household name to those in the area – from the famous Herbal Tablets and rock, through a whole tranche of traditional sweets, Grays still make them all in their most traditional British factory.

It was with this in mind that when I saw the following documentary shared on Twitter by noted local historian @Sacredwench from Black Delph, I knew I had to share it with readers.

Back when the waistline allowed, I loved Gray’s herbals and other boiled sweets, and this wonderful documentary is a wonderful snapshot of a company at which little has needed to change in decades.

My condolences to the Gray family, and I’ll wave my little stick of Black Country rock in Ted’s honour.

From the Dudley News:

Former sweet company boss Ted Gray dies aged 81

TRIBUTES have been paid to the man who spent more than 50 years at the helm of a traditional Dudley sweet company.

Ted Gray, who ran the Edward Gray of Dudley company – fondly known as Teddy Grays – with his older sister Betty, died in his sleep on Friday, aged 81.

The siblings took over the day-to-day running of the family firm’s North Street factory in the sixties.

Betty, who still works for the company at the age of 88, was persuaded by their father to join the business when a vacancy arose in the office and she was soon joined by her brother when he returned from serving in the RAF.

Together, they kept the confectionary business – renowned for its speciality herbal tablets as well as boiled sweets, fudge, toffee, nougat and toffee teacakes, that are sold at its shops in Dudley, Wednesbury and Bewdley and market stalls in Bilston and Blackheath – at the top of its game.

However in 2013, Mr Gray, a father-of-four, who also leaves behind two grandchildren and a great-grandson, was forced to take a step back from the business due to ill health.

His daughter, Julie Healy, said her father’s biggest achievement were “keeping the business running all these years” and closely guarding the secret of his father’s herbal tablet recipe.

She continued: “He was a lovely, generous, caring man. Everybody loved him and had not got a bad word to say about him, he was very well known throughout the town. He was the ‘King of Rock’, we’ve been told.”

Woodmen badly mauled by Wulfs

P1000595

Oak Park: Home to Walsall Wood FC.

Tuesday last (17th January 2016), the Woodmen faced AFC Wulfrunians at Oak Park, and sadly, were met with another resounding defeat.

Bill Shaw witnessed the calamity, and doesn’t mince his words:

Hiya Bob,

Another disastrous night for Wood, the team looked full of goals, but the defence was full of holes making for a good night for anyone who wasn’t a Wood supporter. At times like this it’s hard to keep the faith I know, but bear with us guys, we’ve faced worse than this in the last 17 years.

As they say – this too shall pass, don’t despair, at least not yet anyway.

Walsall Wood 3 v 5 AFC Wulfrunians

AFC Wulfrunians went home with the points, but alarmingly for Wood,  also scored five goals, to increase their goal tally to 31 for the season, as Wood went down to their fourth consecutive defeat.

As in last Tuesdays game the team who kicked off lost the ball, Wood immediately countered, Steven Hayles crossing from wide left, a touch by Joey Butlin set up player/manager Harry Harris and his low drive was just inside the right hand post.  The lead lasted just three minutes, Jake Webb sweeping the ball out wide right to put Craig Grigg clear, his cross fired home by Tom Grainger.

On nine minutes a long clearance by keeper Lewis Gwilliams was collected by Scott Rickards wide right, he cut inside and fired a cross shot wide.

A minute later Webb chased a lost cause into the right hand corner, cut inside and crossed to the far post, Gwilliams taking the ball off the head of Grainger. Next on 14 minutes Webb again raced clear wide right, his cross hit first time by Grainger and deflecting off Luke Wright for a corner that was easily cleared.  Seven minutes later Wood lost the ball on halfway, Webb put Grainger away through the centre, Adam Wood making a crucial challenge to save his teams blushes.

On 24 minutes Charlie Shaw picked up a ball right of centre, raced into the box, keeper John Bateman out quickly and bravely to save at his feet.  A long ball forward by Wood six minutes later found Butlin in the centre of the box, Matthew Hunt making a great challenge. A minute later a lovely reverse ball from Butlin wide right released Ashley Jackson into the right of the box, his rising cross shot high and wide.

On 33 minutes a pinpoint crossfield ball picked out Grigg right of centre, he immediately released Jacob Barnes down the line, his low cross half cleared to Mark Ganderton 25 yards out to hit a first time drive through a packed area and into the net.  They should have increased their lead on 43 minutes, Webb collected a long ball over the top of the defence, raced into the box only to fire high and wide of the advancing Gwilliams and the net.

On 52 minutes Harris hit a crossfield ball to pick out Butlin on the right of the box, his low drive deflected for a corner, from which Wood planted a far post header just too high. On 66 minutes Drew Aiton powered into the left of the box, he went down under a challenge from behind, half-hearted penalty appeals ignored.

Four minutes later a quick counter attack by Wulfs wide right, the ball crossed into the middle to find Grainger to run on and calmly score goal number three.

Within three minutes Wood were back in contention, a ball over the top of the defence was collected at pace by Aiton, he entered the left of the box, keeper Bateman saving bravely at his feet, the ball squirming loose, Liam Molesworth first to react firing the loose ball home.

Wood then committed suicide a minute later, a sloppy back pass was intercepted by Webb to easily score goal number four. With 79 minutes on the clock, Wulfs sewed the three points up, a long ball forward found Dimitri Brown just outside the D, he held off two players before cheekily lobbing the stranded Gwilliams.

The Wood kept trying  to get back into the game and on 84 minutes Louis Harris was brought down as he raced into the centre of the box, he took the penalty himself to bring the deficit back to two, but there was to be no reprieve as the loss became number four out of four.

Wood had the perfect start but things went downhill from then on, and not for the first time this season they lost their way, ending up being turned over by a side in the bottom six.

It’s Boldmere St. Michaels at home for Wood on Saturday 21st, followed by the league cup quarter final on Tuesday night against visitors Highgate United. With Alvechurch and Westfields due to play each other, with Lye Town waiting for the winners, this seasons competition is wide open, so all to play for.

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

Walsall Wood – Gwilliams, Shaw, Hayles, Bains, Wright, Wood, L. Harris, Rickards, Butlin (captain), H. Harris, Jackson, Molesworth, Deakin, Aiton, Taylor, Mansell.

AFC Wulfrunians – Bateman, Grigg, McDonald, Sedgwick (captain), Hill, Barnes, Ganderton, Colley, Grainger, Webb, Hunt, Ray, Palmer, Rose-Laing, Brown, Stevenson.

Walsall Wood are a good team and an excellent, community-spirited club. They need our support – please do attend the coming games if you can.

For The Good of the Wood!
