Peace at last – a Christmas message from The Brownhills Blog

dscn3754

This festive chap was spotted on the Monsal Trail whilst I was walking there on Thursday.

Hey you lot – Brownhills Blog readers, browsers, information seekers, contributors, friends: have a great Christmas, and I wish you a happy, prosperous and peaceful 2017.

This is, believe it or not, the eighth annual Christmas message I’ve posted here, and I’m shocked, honoured and proud that after an inauspicious beginning in 2009, the Brownhills Blog continues to not just survive, but grow.

This year we’ve currently had about 945,000 hits since January 1st and look set to do about 965,000 in 2016 – a 50,000 increase on 2015. This increase surprises me as I just don’t think this blog can reach many more who would be interested in the fairly narrow range of local content it provides – when you think Brownhills Has a population of about 12,000 and Walsall Wood about 13,000 that’s quite a good reach.

This year has been very busy, and a challenge for me personally as work, rather than being able to ease off as I expected, became much more demanding. Occasionally things have swamped me, and I’ve missed stuff. Sometimes I’ve had to walk away, for the sake of sanity, or sleep. I apologise to anyone whose post or event was forgotten.

I do the best I can with my most precious resource – time – severely limited.

That this shambling vehicle remains on the road at all is due entirely to the community that supports it – from great article and content creators, researchers and writers like David Evans, Peter’Pedro’ Cutler, Andy Dennis, Ian Pell and others, to the wonderful folk who supply comments like David Oakley, the Anslow bothers, and dear old Reg. Then there are the people who share and read the articles, echo the social media posts, and offer general help and friendship.

I really couldn’t do it without you.

dscn3842

Christmas has been a long time coming this year.

I’d like to thank particularly Reg ‘Aer Reg’ Fullelove – he’s always generous with material and memories, but the warmth and uniquely human, loving and gentle nature of his comments means they have generated their own fan club and I consider Reg to be the honorary father of the Brownhills Blog. You are a true gentleman, Reg, and a star. Thanks.

Also due special thanks is David Oakley, whose considered and wonderful memories are often contributed in the comments. David’s work is wonderful and very much a part of why the blog connects with people. I need to thank David too for a wonderful act of generosity over the awful wheelchair incident – I did notice and was touched and stunned.

That whole episode demonstrated what a kind, caring community the readers are and I’m honoured and proud to be associated with you all.

Additionally, a shout for Trevor Brown in Australia – we’re all rooting for you old chap. I still roll down the road on 365daysofbiking with you in mind. Bless you.

I know I owe too,  a huge debt to my family as well as online and offline friends who put up with me permanently fiddling with gadgets and rambling. Their tolerance is noted and appreciated, as is their clearly very high boredom threshold.

The Plastic Hippo still does write brilliantly, and I’m so glad to see his work continue. Best wishes, old lad. For the sun on our faces and that first pint after a long walk.

I still have lots of great material to come, as well as local news, opinion and incoherent rants. I never thought I’d still be here today, but things seem to work, so let’s continue, shall we?

There will be another Grand New Year Quiz this year (earlier than last year – so stay tuned!) with ale and book prizes as usual, and I’ve got some great questions for you.

Thanks, and best wishes to you all.

Bob

For better or worse, this is my place and I’ll continue to do the best I can for the community.

Town to town: when the work was finished

As you’ll have all gathered I’ve been a bit busy in the run up to Christmas, with a heavy workload and not much time – on my 365days Tumblr journal I have been counting down the days until I finally finished work for 2016 on Wednesday.

Wednesday wasn’t the end of the dashing about though, as I had journeys planned to Bakewell, in Derbyshire on Thursday and an important errand to undertake in Bridgnorth on Friday.

While in Bakewell, I visited the excellent Hassop Station on the Monsal Trail which is somewhere I heartily recommend and a place I hope to ride again next spring.

Bridgnorth was as charming as ever and the views from the Castle Walk are stunning, as is the Victorian fernicular railway.

I love both towns, but hadn’t been to either for a good mooch around for some years. Although not on the bike, I thought readers – particularly the ex-pats – may be interested in the photos.

For more of this sort of thing, the 365daysofbiking journal is still running.

Quad bikes and clothing amongst goods taken in Brownhills Business Park burglaries

untitled-9

Brownhills Business Park has been the target of burglars. Imagery from Apple Maps.

It seems the local crimewave is not over yet: reports have reached me of break-ins to a number of units on the Brownhills Business Park off Lindon Road/Brownhills Road in Walsall Wood overnight between Wednesday 21st/Thursday 22nd December 2016.

Thieves apparently broke into the Trojan Kickboxing School and gym there and caused a lot of damage, but also took Luke branded clothing and quad/motorbikes from others.

In particular, you are being asked to look out for quads like the one pictured below up for sale cheaply on local sites or via small ads. Remember, if you’re offered stuff like this suspiciously cheap, it’s probably because it’s been stolen – from people like you.

If anyone has any information, please do come forward and contact local police on 101, or you can also call Crimestoppers in confidence.

You can also contact the lads from the gym via Facebook directly – Tyler Reece Shakespeare here, or Gavin Burrows here.

If you’re offered a quad like this locally under unusual circumstances, it’s probably nicked.

Brownhills Air Cadets say thanks!

15037342_1440286942652209_4356991429738128310_n

1444 Brownhills Squadron Air Cadets take great pride in all things, but especially Remembrance. Image from the Squadron of this year’s parade.

A lovely note reaches me from  Flt Lt Carolyn Sault of the 1444 Brownhills Squadron Air Cadets, who do so much good work with the youth of Brownhills – people who shop locally will know that Cadets from the local Squadron often undertake bag packs at local stores in return for donations.

Flt Lt Sault and all the Cadets would like to thank all the people who donated this year, and thus allowed the group to carry on their fine work.

She wrote:

To the Customers of B&M Brownhills and Tesco, Brownhills. Thank you for all the donations at our bag packs throughout 2016.

The funds raised have been used for numerous activities all to benefit the Cadets. The activities include Duke of Edinburgh awards, adventure training, camps and First Aid training to name a few.

Without the support of you the customers and community the cadets would not be able to take part in these activities.

The Cadets, Staff and Civilian Committee send a heartfelt thank you to you all and wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a happy new year to all.

Flt Lt Carolyn Sault
Officer Commanding
1444 Brownhills Squadron.

This is a wonderful gesture, and at a time when there are justified concerns over local antisocial behaviour and other problems, it’s worth remembering that the vast majority of local youth are decent kids who do good stuff.

If you’d like to find out more about 1444 Brownhills Squadron, you can check out their website here and their Facebook page here. They’d love to hear from you.

Thanks to Flt Lt Sault for getting in touch. It’s nice to share something positive!

Two injured in second Ogley Road crash in ten days

Images posted on Twitter by @Bloxwichfire

I’m sad to report that yesterday evening (Wednesday 21st December 2016) there was a serious road traffic incident on the Ogley Road at it’s junction with the Lichfield Road at Co-op Corner in Brownhills.

West Midlands Fire Service Bloxwich Red Watch attended the incident, and tweeted the above pictures and the following message:

Red Watch RTC Litchfield Rd Aldridge 2 cars involved 2 casualties to hospital via ambulance Lucky seatbelts being worn and airbags deployed.

An eyewitness reported one of the casualties was a lady believed to be in her fifties.

This is the second serious incident on the Ogley Road in ten days – there was a nasty hit and run near the junction with Warren Place last week, about which information is still being sought.

Thanks to the emergency services who dealt with this with their usual professionalism – you folks keep us safe and it’s very much appreciated.

Thanks to Mark Schnabel, Vicky Devine, Tim Jones, Jason Woodfield and iPhilip for help with this post.

interested in the old pubs of Brownhills?

front-page1pdf

Another wonderful book from Walsall Wood author Clive Roberts – available right now!

I had an email from local historian and author Clive Roberts a couple of days ago pointing out that his latest book ‘Old Public Houses of Brownhills (Part One)’ is still available, but selling fast – so be quick if you want a copy for a present or just a Christmas treat for yourself.

Clive has previously written excellent and sought after books on Shire Oak, Walsall Wood and Brownhills. He comments and contributes frequently here on the blog and is a stalwart of the local history community.

Clive wrote:

Hello Bob,

I have put together a book on Old Public Houses of Brownhills (part 1), the book has about 90 pages and covers the history and other details of pubs on the west side of Brownhills,

The pubs covered in part one are: Anglesey Arms, Chase Inn, Hussey Arms, Jolly Collier, The Crown, Lamb Inn, Old Wilkin Inn, Pear Tree, Prince of Wales, Queens Head, Railway Tavern, Rising Sun, Swan Inn, Turk’s Head, White Horse and the Yew Tree Inn.

That’s 16 pubs in all… The book covers known landlords and some of the past history from newspaper reports and other sources, together with some interesting photographs.

Copies are available for just £8 each.

You can obtain yours from: Brownhills Library, Walsall Wood Library and also The DEI Convenience Store (Corner or Red shop) in Friezland Lane, and last but not least Walsall Local History Centre.

I’m also selling the book on eBay.

Best wishes
Clive L Roberts

I haven’t yet got my copy, but when I do I’ll post a full review here – Clive’s previous works have garnered him a great reputation for well researched, engaging local history writing that uncovers detail that others may well miss.

If you have any questions or observations for Clive, please do comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at  Googlemail dot com, and I’ll draw them to his attention.

I wish Clive all the best and look forward to Part Two!

Mystery letter?

I’m pleased to note that after posting about Ray Johnston’s misdelivered Christmas card conundrum at the weekend that the intended recipient – who actually was on Chester Road at Shire Oak – has been located thanks to the efforts of readers and other helpful folk on social media.

I’m particularly pleased as this was the second time it happened, the first being in 2014, and I did wonder if the problem would ever be resolved.

As a follow on and flushed with our success, I was wondering if readers could help local lady Laura Iveson with a similar misplaced greeting?

She has a card – pictured about – dressed to ‘Mrs. E Roberts, 68 Lichfield Road, Sandhills, Brownhills, Walsall.’

The card itself is made out to ‘Edna and Stephen’ and is marked as from ‘Odette and Edwin’.

Google has not helped so far.

If you can help, please comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers!

In for a Duck

15542205_10155807784773438_8042178398223254547_n

A local pub thought lost, reborn. Gaffer Tony Colpitts pulls a pint in the reopened Drunken Duck as captured by Walsall CAMRA.

I’m pleased to bring you all some good news for a change – the Drunken Duck in Walsall Wood High Street which closed suddenly in the last few months has just reopened.

Walsall CAMRA posted on social media yesterday:

Drunken Duck, Walsall Wood.
Back open with your new genial host Tony Colpitts.
Four ales on the bar 🍺🍺🍺🍺😃

There had been fears locally that the pub was unlikely to reopen again as there was thought to be internal damage and loss of fittings, but Tony and his team seem to have got up and running pretty quickly.

It’s good to see a local pub reopen, and if we want to keep it so the best way to do that is simple – use it!

My best wishes to Tony and his team, who I’m led to believe also operate the acclaimed Wheatsheaf pub in Highgate, Walsall. If  Tony or any of his crew are reading this please do drop me a line and let us know what you’re up to.

Best wishes to all the staff and future punters. What a great Christmas present for Walsall Wood.

Please feel free to comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Old Chasetown – a remarkable history

old-chasetown2_000008

‘Old Chasetown’ includes some amazing images like this one, of workers in a local colliery.

Thanks to the immense generosity of reader and old pal of the blog Stuart, and the tireless work of the young David Evans, I can share with you something rather special today: a book on Chasetown history entitle ‘Old Chasetown’2, published in a very limited run – very probably  1980.

The book – very reminiscent of the slightly later Brownhills History one featured here a couple of years ago – was created mainly by school kids from three local schools with adult help. It’s over 100 pages long, with loads of good quality images – many of which I’ve certainly never seen before – and lots of interesting, engaging prose.

The introduction notes the following:

During 1979, three of the local Chasetown schools were involved in a project to “mine” historical records, documents and photographs of the area, which undoubtedly lay under the depths of “overburden” in drawers, trunks or in attics. Children of the St. Joseph’s, Chasetown Primary and Oakdene Schools acted as mining “agents”, and many “seams” of interesting material were discovered, unearthed and finally”mined”. As editors we would like to thank the children, parents and friends concerned for the interest shown. This little pamphlet is an example of child/adult co-operation which is the basis and substance of the educational style of today. The young learn from those experienced in life who have a story to tell. The enthusiasm of the young and the archives of those older have provided us with the material from which this selection has been made.

Reader Stuart found the book in his loft, and kindly shared it with the young David Evans, who has scanned it beautifully. David emailed me the scans, and I’ve combined them into a text-searchable PDF file. You can download your copy at the link below.

Old Chasetown (PDF file, 44.3 megabytes)

You can also peruse the first 20 pages in the gallery at the foot of this post; click any page to see a legible version.

This is now the complete version with the missing pages restored! If you downloaded a copy of the original, please download this one instead.

Like the Brownhills book, this is a remarkable work, completed long before the internet. That said, some of the material is open to debate, and I welcome views on some aspects – so if you see anything that makes you think, please do shout up.

Maybe you remember the book, or were involved in some way. I’d love to hear your story.

You can comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

This is an incredible piece of work, and I salute all involved – it’s great to be able to share it with the community. Thanks to Stuart for his immense generosity and patience, too. A real gentleman.

Another break in at the riding stables on Pelsall Road – can you help?

An appeal reaches me from Stevie Ansell who runs the riding stables on Pelsall Road, Brownhills – between Saturday night and Sunday morning, a generator was stolen from the premises after a curious incident in the preceding week.

Stevie wrote:

Last night we were targeted yet again and had a generator stolen – This generator was in lock up right on Front of stables.

We are currently obtaining pictures from cameras but somebody must have seen something as main busy road out front?

Reward for any information leading to return of generator which is essential for smooth running of stables and also an expense that stables could do without when feed bills alone are in excess of £400 a week 😖

Meantime during the week in broad daylight two youths on pedal bikes came onto stables generally mooching around and cased damage to lock ups and smashed a window. See pics above.

Maybe they were casing the joint or maybe a coincidence but none the less – caused damage in excess of £100 and took off with our spade!

Please share share share and let’s catch these opportunists that are low enough to target a non profit organisation that does nothing but good in the community.

Somebody must recognise them.

Pictures from last night to go up once liasons with police etc have taken place – but in the meantime please see pics above of youths that caused damage etc during the week. All information given will be kept totally confidential.

Many Thanks in advance

Stevie and the stables do a huge amount of great work, and it’s terrible that anyone would steal from them and cause them hardship.

It’s worth pointing out that these monkeys only do this because there’s a market for what they take: if anything you’re offered is suspiciously cheap, don’t buy it: it’s probably nicked from someone like you.

You can contact Walsall Police by dialling 101 (999 in an emergency, obviously) or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Please come forward with any information you have. If you don’t want to contact Stevie or the police directly, drop me a

A Christmas mystery – the folks who no longer live on the hill

Friend of the blog Ray Johnson has been in touch with something that seems to be a bit of a recurring seasonal mystery – he’s again received a Christmas card that isn’t intended for him!

The card is addressed to Mr. and Mrs. K Whitehouse, 44 Shire Oak Hill, Brownhills, Walsall. It’s from George and Phyll (Phyllis perhaps?) and if this sounds familiar, we had the same thing happen at Christmas 2014, which we never managed to resolve.

15556544_10155000737967494_1100617098_o

15595631_10155000739117494_527400893_o We had the same problem in 2014 – it seems the sender and receiver are no longer in touch. Image from Ray Johnson.

It would be really nice if we could get the card to the people it was intended for, and perhaps reconnect old pals?

If you can help, please comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers!

Resurgent Wood conquer Khalsa

Images generously supplied by the young David Evans

Yesterday afternoon (Saturday 17th December 2016) Walsall Wood FC entertained Sporting Khalsa at home – and the result was a reassuring victory for the Woodmen, much to the delight of the home fans.

I’d like to particularly welcome back Bill Shaw, who had the cataracts in one eye fixed just last wee – dedication, right there.

Also, don’t forget it’s the Walsall Wood Christmas Fair at Oak Park today – details here!

Bill Shaw reports:

Hiya Bob,

A pre-Christmas cracker after the minutes silence for former player Brian Bottomer.

It was the type of game that Bottie relished with no quarter asked and both sides going for the win. Wood’s new management team recording their second win in four days with a victory over fifth placed Sporting Khalsa.

It’s a few days off for Wood now until they entertain St. Andrews on Boxing Day with an early kick off time of 12.30pm, don’t be late.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all readers of the blog from everyone at The Wood.

Walsall Wood 2 v 1 Sporting Khalsa

This win for Wood gave the new Management team their second win in four days, but more importantly gave them the first double of the season to move back into the top half of the table.

An entertaining opening few minutes with the visitors just having the edge, on seven minutes Mensah Kinch got clear wide left, his cross hit first time wide by Deqwon Ebanks. Two minutes later Josh McKenzie crossed from the right to the near post, Marvin Nisbett saw his shot blocked, Ebanks fired the rebound goalwards but it deflected off Craig Deakin on the line and beyond the left hand post.  On 16 minutes a long ball into the right of the box saw keeper Sam Arnold out to save bravely at the feet of Ebanks.

On 20 minutes a Steven Hayles cross from wide left was headed skywards by Tesfa Robinson, Drew Aiton on the right edge waited for the ball to drop, his volley deflected off a defender, keeper Tom Turner changed direction to make a great full length save.

On 26 minutes Nisbett got clear wide left, his cross beyond the far post headed behind by Rikki Bains to deny Ebanks.  The near post right wing corner saw Arnold fail to hold the ball under intense pressure, Mensah Kinch forcing the ball home from close range. Six minutes later Kinch took the ball past a stranded Arnold on the left of the box, only to hit his cross too high for anyone to capitalise.

On 39 minutes Hayles cut inside from wide left, his low cross bouncing off Joey Butlin and into the grateful arms of keeper Turner. Four minutes later debutant Charlie Shaw played a pinpoint ball through the defence to find Aiton on the right edge of the box, he turned his marker neatly, but his shot lacked power and Turner saved comfortably.

Wood put Khalsa under pressure at the start of the second half and after just three minutes were back on terms, Butlin’s strong run inside from wide right saw him go through three challenges before laying the ball back to Aiton, his goalbound effort partially blocked by Turner, Deakin pouncing to force the loose ball home from close range.

On 52 minutes from a free kick left of centre Robinson got in a header that Arnold saved easily. Five minutes later Kinch crossed from the left to beyond the far post, the ball was delivered back inside to Dave Meese, his first time drive bouncing to safety off the inside of the right hand post.  On 70 minutes McKenzie raced onto a ball into the right of the box, his rising drive deflecting off a defender, Arnold with a great full length save.

The ridiculous off side rule presented Wood with the winner after 74 minutes, Aiton played a high ball forward wide left, Butlin 10 yards beyond the last player was judged to be not interfering with play until a defender went up for the ball, it skimmed off the top of his head, through to Butlin on the left edge of the box to run on and calmly curl the ball past the stranded Turner and into the far corner of the net.  6 minutes later a flowing move left of centre ended with Nick Wright’s cross headed out to Shaw to hit first time inches too high. Four minutes later a powerful defensive header forward by Anthony Juxon put Aiton away wide left, he cut inside, his cross shot rolling the wrong side of the post.  Proving that attack is the best form of defence on 90 minutes Drew Ricketts broke up an attack, hit a ball over the top of a tiring defence, keeper Turner racing out to head clear from the tireless Butlin.

A cracking encounter for the pre–Christmas crowd, but a performance of real character by Wood who fought back from a goal down to just shade a fascinating encounter.  Just a pity the rules of the game saw the extremely controversial third goal of the game decide the outcome of a match that could have gone either way.

Christmas greetings from all at The Wood, see you all on Boxing Day when we entertain Leicestershire newcomers St. Andrews to the ML Safety Stadium, KICK OFF 12.30pm NOTE.

Bill Shaw.

The Teams:

Walsall Wood – Arnold, Deakin, Hayles, Bains, Ricketts, L. Harris, Shaw, Juxon, Butlin (captain) Aiton, Mansell, Wright, Jackson, Ricketts, Taylor, Hutton.

Sporting Khalsa – T. Turner, Rogers, Jackson, Boothe, Robinson (captain), E. Turner, McKenzie, Meese, Ebanks, Nisbett, Kinch, Bannister, Kasiama, Taylor Boyce, Cooper, Nelson.

Thanks, as ever to Bill, and apologies for the cockup – For The Good Of The Wood!

Walsall Wood Football Club are a top local side with a big-hearted faithful who know how to have a great time supporting their lads, and welcome all comers to come enjoy great local soccer. The boys from The Wood have been at the heart of the local community for a century or more, so please do go check out a match or two if you’re curious.

Anyone for a 1960s Ogley Hay School reunion?

A 1960s class photo of Ogley Hay School. Can you help with names and a date, please? Image kindly supplied by Belinda Bedworth.

Belinda Bedworth has been in touch to ask if anyone present on the above photo of Ogley Hay Girls School could get in touch as she’d love to organise a reunion.

Belinda didn’t give a date but I’d say this image is from the 1960s.

Pedestrian injured in collision in Brownhills: can you help find the car please?

Hi folks – there’s been a collision in Brownhills this evening (Wednesday, 14th December 2016) in which a pedestrian has been injured requiring emergency services attention, and it seems the driver of the vehicle involved failed to stop.

The condition of the lady is not currently known but she was assisted by paramedics. My sympathies to her, and I wish her a speedy recovery.

Reader Lee Bevan reports that a yellow or gold car, believed to be a Renault Megane hard top convertible was involved in the incident, which took place on the Ogley Road near Warren Place in Brownhills this evening, at around 9:40pm.

The car will very possibly have front wing, bumper or bonnet damage, and certainly damage to the front driver’s side wheel as it hit the kerb hard.

If anyone has any info, please do contact Walsall Police by dialling 101  or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111

You can also message Lee Bevan on Facebook here.

Thanks to Lee Bevan, Julia Littleton, Karen Johnson, Nicki Townsend and all the other readers who helped with this post.

Brian Bottomer remembered: Local football has lost a great friend

img005

The 1965 Ogley Hay lineup – Brian Bottomer is second from right, front row. A lovely image kindly supplied by George Martin.

When I reported the news here of the sad passing of Brian Bottomer at the weekend, I had no idea just how popular and well known in local football circles he was – there have been many kind comments on social media and I thank everyone for their kind, sympathetic messages.

As George Martin kindly informed us, the Funeral is on Friday 16th December 2016, at 2.00pm at St. St. Peters Church, Church Hill, Hednesford.

Seeing the awful news, long time contributor and top football commentator Bill Shaw dug out a nugget of gold for those who knew Brian or who may be interested in his history.

Bill explains:

Hiya Bob,

Sad to hear the news about Bottie (Brian Bottomer), one of the stars of the first golden years era at Oak Park, he was involved from 1954 – 1960, great times to be here.

In the early noughties I did a spot in the programme called, “Where are they now?”, and Brian was one of my first volunteers, his career made very interesting reading – copy attached.

After the first 50’s and 60’s players re-union in 2002 Brian came down the Wood more often and was my room-mate on the 2012-2013 trip to Guernsey for the FA Vase replay.

Incidentally, the food for the re-union evening was financed by the late Percy Claridge and his mate John Sylvester, father of course of Mark and Ian at Excel. Small world isn’t it?

Goodbye, God Bless Bottie, thanks for the memories.

Regards,

Bill Shaw.

I include Bill’s scan below, which I’ve transcribed. Thanks to Bill for a remarkable contribution on the subject of a very interesting man who will be sadly missed.

My, and all the readers condolences are extended to Brian Bottomer’s family and friends.

If you knew Brian or remember the team, please do feel free to get in touch: either comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Bill has been writing about the Woodmen much longer than I’ve been writing about Walsall Wood! Click for a larger version.

Where are they now?
Brian Bottomer 1954 -1960

Brian was born in Walsall and joined the R.A.F. as a five year regular in 1952 when he was 17 years old. Whilst in the R.A.F. he played with Jackie Mudie of Blackpool and Scotland fame. During his time in the R.A.F. he met up with P.T.I. Williamson who was also a scout for both Shrewsbury Town (who, under the managership of Arthur Turner had just been elected to the old Third Division North) and Walsall Wood. Brian together with four others had trials for Town. Although Brian played four times for the reserves he didn’t quite make it, so he signed for Walsall Wood.

As Brian arrived at Oak Park so Ray Boot departed to Burton Albion. This was the time that manager Alan Wakeman arrived at Oak Park and over the next few seasons Walsall Wood became a force in local football. They finished runners up in the Midland Combination of 1956 -57 to Wolves, having gone to a newly opened Castlecroft to beat Wolves 3-1, (Brian scored twice) to keep alive their championship hopes.   Wolves fielded a team that included Eddie Stuart, Ron Flowers (a member of England’s 1966 World Cup Squad) Barry Stobart and others who had first team experience to go to Gornal and win 1-0 to beat Wood by a point, making it a clean sweep of every league that a Wolves team played in that season. Wood also won the Walsall Senior Cup and were beaten finalists on another occasion. Brian incidentally holds the record for the number of appearances in the final, having played twice each for Wood and Rushall Olympic and once been the referee.

This was of course a great time in the Wood history. In Season 1957-58 Wood played West Auckland here at Oak Park in the F.A. Amateur Cup and in front of a crowd of 3,600 lost 3-1. Brian says, “We were all frightened to death and just froze in the first half and were down 3-0. We played better in the second half but by then it was too late.” West Auckland were that much of an amateur side they could afford to fly their left winger back from his National Service base in Germany. After beating the Wood they went all the way, winning the Amateur Cup final at Wembley. The next season saw Wood reach the second round, their reward was an away match at Willington, near Doncaster. Despite having the better chances Wood lost 1-0 to a freak own goal just after half time.

Brian played for a Middle East R.A.F. side against a Middle East Army side twice at Moaschar in Egypt and played against a Cyprus eleven at the Olympic Stadium in Nicosia. During this time Brian kept out a Scottish International called Brown. On his return to England he was stationed at Fradley together with Frank Upton who played for Chelsea and they played in the station side together.

In 1960 Alan Wakeman left to manage Stratford Town and most of the team went with him. For Brian who had only just married Jean the journey to Stratford for home games was too much, he was never home before 9.00pm. So for one season he played in the Wolverhampton Works League for his works team Aluminium Bronze. He then went to Rushall Olympic and played for seven seasons. During this time he became a fireman and was in the job for 28 years before retiring in 1988.

He represented the Midland Region as captain for 5-6 years. He was vice captain of the Fire Service national side and played three times. His last International match was against Scotland at the Meadowbank Stadium just before the 1970 Commonwealth Games. Brian continued playing until he was 40 and then a chance encounter with referee Arthur Holland (the only man to referee 3 Wembley finals: European Cup, F.A. Cup and F.A. Amateur Cup) he took up the whistle and had 8 enjoyable years before calling it a day in 1982.

Brian had a 4 way heart bypass operation in October 2000 and is now slowly getting back to normal. He’s here today with his wife Jean so pop and say hello.

Police hunt man following armed robbery at Card Factory store, Brownhills

17494634

A nasty and unusual incident in the heart of Brownhills.

In a remarkable instance of coincidental timing, Walsall Police late this afternoon (Monday, 12th December 2016) published an appeal for witnesses over an armed robbery at the Card Factory shortchanged on the corner of Ravens Court in High Street Brownhills, that took place on Sunday 4th December 2016.

They said:

Police in Walsall are appealing for witnesses following an armed robbery at the Card Factory in Brownhills High Street on Sunday 4 December.

The suspect walked into the branch at 4.45pm and threatened a member of staff with a knife. He left on foot with a till. Officers are examining CCTV.

Detective Constable Deborah Humphries, from Walsall Police’s Investigation Team, said: ‘The suspect is a white man, aged between 35 and 40 and medium build. He was dressed in a beige coloured jacket, a woolly hat and gloves, and had stubble.

‘We know the offender left the store and walked across Ravens Court towards Tesco carrying the stolen till and we’d now like to hear from anyone who saw anything’.

You can contact DC Humphries by emailing d.humphries@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk

Information can be given to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Please quote crime number 20WS/239644W/16

If you know who this scumbag is, please dob them in to the police. Nobody should be threatened like that, and especially not in the course of their job. What a horrid thing to happen.

Please,  if you have any further information relating to this, or any other incident, or if you witnessed something  please contact Walsall Police by dialling 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Copper blues: It’s time the police responded to crime in our area

_86476006_de4ff23f-f453-4859-8438-29a846ed66b1

Oi – you lot! Over here! Image from the BBC.

I had a rather sad message in the last few days from a very concerned person who works in Brownhills – their shop has been burgled for the second time in a fortnight, and like many shopkeepers and businesses in the area, the current burglary spree is really hitting them hard.

They wrote:

Hi

I work in a Charity Shop in Brownhills, we got broken into again last night, for the second time in two weeks, the perpertrators were caught on nearby CCTV and the police are pretty sure of who the person is doing the crime, but due to a lack of staff to get the hard evidence, at the moment nothing can be done.

Ii think the criminals know this, due to the fact they are revisiting places they have burgaled after a very short period of time, and also in our case the amount of time they are spending on a premises they are attempting to burgle. They spent almost an hour in our shop last night, which in my opinion is just totally brazen, they know they aren’t going to be caught.

It seems the current crime wave in Brownhills isn’t stopping  -over the last month or so, we have been burgaled twice, the card shop by Downes’s has been burgaled twice, Acorns has been done, the opticians by the post office has been done, specsavers has been done and the dentists has been done.

Eventually the retail outlets that are there will simply just go.

Thought I would inform you of this as you should know of this escalating crime spree in our town.

Concerned.

This also comes against a background where, at the other end of our area in Walsall Wood, a small gang of what appear to be the same youths are causing serious hassle, seemingly unchallenged by West Midlands Police finest.

From reports I’m receiving anecdotally, from stuff I’m being told and conversations I’m having, two young men stole a moped, and were brazenly riding it around for days. A wheelchair has been stolen and smashed. There have been vandalism and harassment incidents at the new Oak Park and Streets Corner. There is frequent intimidation of people in their homes and as they walk the streets.

The same names are repeated over and over again.

Nothing is done.

14695405_10209262293733252_2206746661237371237_n

Absolute morons stole an amputee’s wheelchair, and smashed it up – thankfully, the local community helped the victim. But the crime wave continues.

Like Brownhills, people in the Wood are sick to the back teeth of the trouble, yet the police seem to shrug and say there’s nothing they can do. Whilst I understand the problems caused by cuts, going after the perpetrators of a recent wave of theft and antisocial behaviour would seem to be expedient, and do much to restore faith in a beleaguered force.

The more the small but active criminal element get away with, the bolder they will get, and we’ll all suffer.

Local kids who are perfectly innocent are being treated with suspicion and hassled purely because a tiny number of their peers are behaving appallingly.

At a time when the Police need community co-operation more than ever, they are alienating us.

This simply isn’t good enough.

Can I suggest readers suffering crime or ASB report every incident to 101, no matter how small, and that you contact your local councillors and MP with your concerns. It might also be worth contacting the Police and Crime Commissioner about this, too.

You can contact Brownhills councillors at this link here.
You can contact Walsall Wood Councillors here.
You can contact Wendy Morton, our MP, here.
You can contact David Jamieson, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner here.

The Brownhills Policing Team can be contacted here.
The Walsall Wood Policing Team can be contacted here.

I’ve lived in Brownhills for many years – all of my life, in fact, and it’s always been a relatively quiet, crime-free area. Lately there has been a real rise in reports of burglary, theft and bad behaviour. It’s about time the police, instead of shrugging and making excuses, went out and felt some collars.

Pictures from Brownhills Christmas Market Magic 2016

Image kindly supplied by Brownhills Town Centre Partnership

It’s good for your Elf. Image kindly supplied by Brownhills Town Centre Partnership

I have to congratulate the people who worked so hard on Brownhills Christmas Market Magic 2016 last Saturday – Diane and the team at the Brownhills Town Centre Partnership worked really hard and raised money towards future event in the town.

Diane has worked hard over the last few weeks, and has raised over £1100 for local town centre partnerships in Walsall with three events – that’s quite an achievement. All proceeds will be ploughed back into events and promotions in the local towns.

My thanks are extended to the young David Evans who wandered down there to take some lovely pictures for the blog (rumour has it he enjoyed the odd mince pie, too…

I also had a great photo of Olaf the snowman from Josh Hoban and a selection of images from the Town Centre Partnership which I’ve rolled up into a gallery below.

Thanks again to all who attended – the Backyard Rusty Tap stall was praised highly on social media and as usual, there will be Brownhills-brewed Backyard ale prizes in the Christmas Quiz this year, which will be even more fiendish. But more on that later…

Cheers to David and all who worked so hard.

Best wishes to Bill Shaw….

P1000595

Best wishes to Bill Shaw!

Just a note to say there will not be any football reports here this week due to football correspondent and all round top bloke Bill Shaw getting his cataracts done.

A cancellation came up earlier in the week, so Bill took it and hopefully should be recovering by now. I send Bill my best wishes, as I’m sure all readers and especially the Walsall Wood faithful do too.

The Woodmen are entering interesting times and I think Bill’s opinions in coming months will be well worth reading, as they always have been. I wish him the best recovery.

Get well soon Bill, from everyone here at the blog.

Attempted armed bank raid in Aldridge – Police issue statement

15391500_1165169233538044_512916483407773082_o

Shocking events in Aldridge – a van is reversed into the frontage of Barclays Bank. Image posted on Facebook by Neil P.

Somewhat shockingly, there has been a bank robbery in Aldridge this morning (Friday 9th December 2016), when it appears a van was smashed into the frontage of Barclays in the High Street, whereupon raiders threatened staff with machetes or similar.

The robbers progress was apparently impeded by a christmas tree in the foyer, and the empty handed perpetrators escaped on foot.

Police are not believed to be looking for people who are members of MENSA.

There’s lots of coverage online – read about events here at the Walsall Advertiser, there’s an article here at the Express & Star, another at the Birmingham Mail and even more coverage on the BBC.

Walsall Police issued the following statement:

Police have launched an investigation following an armed robbery at a bank in Aldridge today (9 December).

It is believed that three men armed with machetes, drove a dark blue transit van through a window at Barclays Bank,High Street at around 9.25am.

They entered the bank and threatened staff but were forced to leave empty-handed.

The men were seen running away from the bank towards Little Aston Road.

Officers are in the area and continue to search for the suspects.

Anyone with information is urged to call West Midlands Police on 101. Alternatively people can leave information anonymously by calling Crimestoppers the independent charity on 0800 555 111.

My sympathies to the staff and anyone else subjected to what must have been an desperately terrifying incident, and my regards to the police who I hope find these arseholes quickly.

If anyone has any info, please do contact Walsall Police by dialling 101  or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111

Can you help with this enquiry about a 1970s Brownhills business, please?

Image very generously donated by Peter Booth.

I was hoping the answer may have been captured in some of Peter Booth’s wonderful photography, but sadly not. Image very generously donated by Peter Booth.

Here’s a really curious enquiry I feel sure a reader somewhere will be able to help with – and I think it’s quite interesting too – please help if you can.

Jennifer and John Jones, former residents of Lichfield Road, Brownhills wrote:

Good afternoon

We are trying to find out the name of a firm of solicitors based in High Street Brownhills in the early 1970’s. The solicitors had a branch of the Halifax Building Society in their office. We lived in Lichfield Road Brownhills at the time and used the offices regularly but unfortunately we can’t remember the name. We have lived in North Yorkshire for a few years and have lost all touch with Brownhills and have no surviving relatives there now.

If you are unable to help, please could you suggest anyone we could contact to find out this information?

Kind regards,
Jennifer & John Jones.

I genuinely have no idea – I can only vaguely remember the Halifax – was that the one by the old Post Office, or was that the Heart of England?

Thanks to you both for an interesting enquiry!

If you can help with this, please do: comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

Brownhills Brownies need your help!

imag4202_1

Brownhills Brownies recently at a Christmas fayre. That’s an excellent Christmas jumper! Image supplied by Jenny from Brownhills Brownies.

I’ve been contacted by Jenny at the St James Brownies up at St James in Ogley Hay to ask if you could help by voting in a competition they’re entering for community group funding, from galaxy hot Chocolate.

The 2nd Brownies in Brownhills are a popular and active group who can often be seen out and about on activities, and a little community funding could help them do more with improved sports equipment and trips out.

If you have a wee lass that might be interested, you can go find out why the group are all about – it’s for girls aged 7-10 years old, and takes place at St James Church Hall on Tuesday evenings at 6.45pm.

If your little one isn’t so little, there’s also Girl Guides from ages 10-14 on Mondays at 6:30pm. See this section of the St. James website here.

Anyway, on with the appeal. Jenny wrote:

We are a great bunch and enjoy many different activities such as crafts, cooking, games, badges, sports and lots more! We like having fun and learning new skills. Brownies is great for girls to get to know each other and mix with girls from different schools.

We provide a safe and relaxed environment where girls can have fun and make new friends.

HOW WILL YOU USE THIS PRIZE?

We would use the money to buy new resources for our programme. We are in need of some new sports equipment and a new lockable storage cupboard to keep it in. We would also like to buy some new craft items and put some money towards a trip for the girls.

Brownhills Christmas Market Magic 2016 – coming this Saturday!

14907003_1109694822413013_8341972920420829295_n

Always a good event!

Diane Mansell at the Walsall District Management Team has written to let me know that there will be a Christmas market event in Brownhills this year, planned for this coming Saturday 10th December 2016.

The same day there will be Santa Claus, a Christmas Fayre at Silver Street Methodist Church, a festival of music and light at the Canoe and Outdoor Centre in the evening, a Christmas trail, entertainment for kids, offers, competitions faceprinting and all the usual festive fun stuff.

Please folks – it’s easy to run down our town and say nothing ever happens, but this is a real chance to come together and stage something we can all enjoy. Over recent years these events have got better and better, so why not give it a go?

Meanwhile, if you’re organising anything for Christmas at all, please do drop me a line. I do like to promote local stuff wherever possible. It’s an easy way for you to reach thousands of readers a week, absolutely free of charge.

Please mail your details to BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

Just a normal day in Brownhills....

Help the Glebe Centre support the homeless – Donations needed this Saturday please!

Old friend of the blog and top Aldridge correspondent Linda ‘Mad old baggage’ Mason has been in touch to ask readers if they could possibly help Walsall’s Glebe Centre continue to support the homeless by making donations of clothes, toiletries and even food this weekend?

Linda and her good friend Martin Bateman will be at Asda in central Walsall this Saturday  (10th December 2016) from 10am until 2pm ready to take your donations, however large or small.

The items you so generously give will be used to support those most in need in Walsall this Christmas – those living on the street – and donations don’t have to be new, just clean, and in decent condition.

With homelessness increasing and welfare and care services becoming harder to access, services like that at the Glebe Centre are an essential lifeline to many who otherwise fall through the net.

Linda Mason wrote this about the appeal:

glebe-centre

Image from the Glebe Centre website.

I am pleased to announce a Christmas Appeal on behalf of The Glebe Centre in Walsall.

On Saturday 10 December 2016 myself Linda Mason and the wonderful Martin Bateman will be at Asda St Matthews in Walsall, ready to take your donations between 10am and 2pm. All you have to do is get together some things, some of which you may have lying unwanted in your home and pop them down to us.

This is what The Glebe Centre needs: Hats, Scarves, Gloves, Coats, Boots Trainers, Shoes, Socks, Small/Medium sized underwear for men and women.

**ALL OF THESE CAN BE USED, STUFF YOU DON’T NEED ANY LONGER, JUST MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE CLEAN PLEASE!**

Sleeping bags and blankets would also be useful.

In addition: mens’ and womens’ toiletries, women’s sanitary products, toothbrushes (new!), toothpaste, combs, brushes etc

In addition The Glebe feeds people and so tins and packets would be useful for either the centre or for the food packages they prepare for people.

It would also be lovely for give people some Christmas goodies and yummies BUT please check the use by date so that it isn’t gone by the time Christmas comes along.

I really hope that many of our members can make a small donation to help those people in Walsall who for whatever reason find themselves in a position of needing these services.

For more information see the Glebe Centre website here, and you can check out their Facebook page here.

Thank you
Linda

I wholly support both the Glebe Centre and Linda and Martin’s endeavour to support it – it’s a sad indictment upon society that such a service is needed at all, but without the volunteers and generous folk who support the project, life on the street in Walsall would be far more unpleasant.

If you need any more details, or would like to ask questions, please don’t hesitate to comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Cheers to everyone involved.

Our Village – a great new local history book for Aldridge – out now and selling fast!

15110314_652242314950293_5581803497713850457_o

The gold postbox is a lovely touch, I think!

There are a handful of great local history books out at the moment, just in time for Christmas, that would makes great gifts for those with a local interest – last week I noted the new book on Brownhills pubs by Clive Roberts, and I’m posting today to point up the new book by Sue Satterthwaite and Len Boulton covering Aldridge.

Sue and Len you’ll recall are at the heart of the Aldridge Great War project, and both historians really lit up the hidden history of the Aldridge Manor House as a military hospital during World War One; not only that, but they’ve taken their work into the community to commemorate and tell the story of those local lads who gave their all.

The duo’s latest work is entitled ‘Our Village’ and is a charming, entertaining and quirky book of stories, photos and maps bringing Aldridge’s history to life, and is a delight and a joy to read.

The authors had this to say about the book and where it can be purchased:

Light hearted stories from Aldridge folk about life growing up in the village. Photographs, maps and much more. Price £5.99 on 2sale in Aldridge Library, Aldridge town centre shops Croft News, Simply Delicious, Covent Garden. Walsall Waterstones Book store and Walsall Garden centre. Lazy Hill shops; Lynda’s and the Thomas Project. This is a non-profit book.

Like all local history books, the print run is limited and you need to act fast to bag yourself a copy. And when you do, why not send me a note as to what you made of the book?

Feel free to comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

My compliments to Sue and Len on yet more wonderful work.

Appeal made for household items in aid of couple affected by Wyre Close fire

untitled-9

Wyre Close is just off Coppice Lane, Walsall Wood. imagery from Apple Maps.

Following the unfortunate house fire in Wyre Close, Walsall Wood on Saturday evening (3rd December 2016) friend of the couple affected, Abigail Claire has been appealing for anyone that may be discarding useful household items to donate them if they can.

Abigail said:

If anyone has any spare household items can you please get in touch. I spent some time with the family last night and as you can imagine they were heartbroken.

I have:

Kettle
Toaster
Microwave
Pull out bed
1 quilt set
Small TV
Few clothes

They have nothing the whole house gone. They have my number so will call I presume when they get over the initial shock and find somewhere to stay.

I’m just asking people to hold on to things or be mindful when doing their “Christmas clearout” and hold on to some stuff incase it’s needed.

If you have anything you think might be useful, please contact Abigail by Facebook here – she’s checking for messages regularly, so even if you’re not friends she should pick up your response.

Thanks to Abigail for a true act of community spirit and warm-heartedness. This is true humanity.

Ice cream, miners, silent cinema and the Jones Boys. What do you know?

unknown

This should jog a memory or two for Sue. A wafer master, from Bradford on Avon Museum.

An absolutely fantastic enquiry came in a couple of weeks ago (see how far I am behind? Sorry) from Sue Clarke in Hilton, Cambridgeshire which blends a number of disparate topics covered here including ice cream, old cycle shops, local music and cinema.

I feel certain here readers like David Oakley and Reg Fullelove may be able to help, and all contributions very welcome.

For reference; we’re interested in all Brownhills history on the blog – at over 4,000 articles there’s almost everything covered! We remembered Ice Cream here, the High Street recalled by Reg Fuyllelove here, and lots of stuff on the musical history of Brownhills here with a lovely homage to Brownhills cinema here by Mick Stackhouse.

I’ll let Sue explain:

Hallo Brownhills Bob,

I’m contacting you as a starting point as I begin to research my family history. Having read about you on your Homepage I think I’m probably older than you.

My own memory of Brownhills ice cream was walking across a stretch of grass, maybe a common, to buy Selwyn’s Ice Cream… made in a metal oblong ‘scoop’ and then placed between wafers.

The Burton Boys in Stonnall enjoy a Selwyn Smith ice cream. Lovely 1958 film from Desmond Burton

My memories date back to the early 1950s when I visited my Granny Jones on Lichfield Road. I know that my grandfather and uncles were miners but on searching out more about my father’s family I find that they were miners over several generations and they all lived around Brownhills, Pelsall and Walsall. My uncles made a quartet and were called the Jones Boys/Jones Brothers and were popular playing for local gigs. My aunt played the piano for the silent films in the local cinema. On my mother’s side I believe that her father, my grandad Elford, had a bike/bike repair shop probably in the early 1930’s on, I think, the High Street.

I understand that I can go to the Walsall Council Archives and plan to do that in the New Year, in the meantime I wonder if you are able to put me in touch with any relevant Local History groups… I see there’s a Burntwood group… do you think that would be relevant to my geographical area?

Princeps was, I think, before my time. This shot I'm guessing must be about mid-sixties, but I'm hoping someone can date it better. From the excellent work 'Memories of Brownhills Past' by Clarice Mayo and Geoff Harrington.

I think this was probably 1960s rather than 50s, but Brownhills High Street clearly pre Ravens Court, as the roof of Mount Zion can be seen on the left. I think Sue might recognise this. From the excellent work ‘Memories of Brownhills Past’ by Clarice Mayo and Geoff Harrington.

I think you comment on the present times in Brownhills, I don’t Tweet on Twitter and am not very computer savvy so I’m not sure if your interest in Brownhills goes back to the early part of the last century but any thing you can tell me about the cinema and possibly my uncles’ music would be very welcome, as would anything else you think relevant.

Many thanks, I hope to hear from you
Sue Clark
Hilton Cambridgeshire.

I’m currently unaware of any Brownhills local history groups that are active – but I can heartily recommend Burntwood Family History Group and also the Aldridge Local History Society whose territories clearly overlap in Brownhills, and I’m sure readers here will be happy to help with memories and contributions.

Thanks to Sue for a lovely question – if you can help, please do: Comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Thanks.

Woodmen enter new era with draw at Loughborough

Pictures and captions kindly supplied by David Evans.

Saturday afternoon (3rd December 2016), Walsall Wood F.C. faced Loughborough University away, and they came home with a respectable draw after some  entertaining football.

Bill Shaw was there to witnesss the action, after Mark Swann’s shock resignation last week:

Hiya Bob,

Some superb approach play by both teams on the Wembley of non-league football. Both keepers played well, but confidence in front of goal was missing from both teams.

With reserve team manager David Carns following Swanny out of the club, popular veteran Grant Beckett has taken over the reins to move the ‘Stiffs’ forward.

Still difficult times ahead at the Wood with the Board’s first job to appoint a successor to the popular Mark Swann, whose near five year reign came to an end last Saturday. Thanks for the ride boss, I wouldn’t have missed it for the World. Good Luck mate, take care.

Loughborough University 1 v 1 Walsall Wood

Just like the earlier fixture at the Wood the home side went behind but found an equaliser.  Both sides played some neat approach play but keepers James Stallan and Sam Arnold both almost kept clean sheets, with Arnold very unlucky not to succeed.

The Scholars started the better with Alex Read prominent, after only two minutes he collected a ball wide right, fired in a low cross that Shawn Boothe put behind for a corner.  He made the byeline from wide right, another cross put behind by Boothe five minutes later.

On 13 minutes a misplaced Scholars clearance went straight to Ashley Jackson left of centre to run on and fire just over the right angle.

Four minutes later a long ball forward found Alex Johnson whose clever ball inside set up Jason Davis to fire a first time drive wide for the Scholars.

A neat right wing move on 19 minutes saw Karl Edwards lay the ball back to Desean Martin, his first time rising drive superbly pushed over by keeper James Stallan. A minute later Nick Wright released Ashley Jackson into the left of the box, Stallan saving bravely at his feet. Two minutes later Craig Deakin powered down the left, crossed into the box to find Edwards who rode a clumsy challenge, loud penalty shouts ignored, and his low drive was charged down.  Then on 28 minutes Wright went on a right to left crossfield run across the face of the box only to be stopped on the left edge before he could get a shot away.

Having weathered the storm on 30 minutes Johnson’s ball across the face of the box was hit first time low by Read to bring a full length save from Arnold.  Five minutes later a long ball wide right saw Arnold race from his area to kick clear from Luke Trotman.

Two minutes later Josh Mansell went on a powerful right wing run, cut inside and his near post low drive was well taken by Stallan at the foot of the post.

Back came Read, cutting in from wide right, his vicious low drive pushed away by Arnold.

Wood finished the half on top, Jackson’s rising drive pushed wide by Stallan and then from the second of two corners Martin fired a first time effort just wide from 40 yards.

The second half followed the pattern of the first with both keepers equal to anything that was thrown at them on the rare occasion when defences where breached.  Wood were put under pressure for 20 minutes from the 65th and then Deakin broke up an attack and played a ball wide left that was collected at pace by Wright, he held off his marker, raced into the box and beat Stallan with a low drive to put Wood ahead.

On 89 minutes substitute Joe Boachie raced onto a ball into the right of the box, his low drive beat Arnold but came back off the near post flying into the net off the so unlucky keeper, whose pull back was adjudged to have crossed the line.

So the League’s under achievers shared the points which was probably a fair reflection of the 90 minutes, but interim manager Harry Harris came so close to recording his first win.

It’s Wolves Sporting at the Wood on Tuesday night before they visit Coventry United next Saturday.

Bill Shaw.

The Teams:

Loughborough University – Stallan, Trotman, Rankin, Jackson, Cullum, Midveld, Johnson, Legg (captain), Davis, Ward-Cochrane, Read, Hill, Welch, Bridge, Boachie, O’Keefe.

Walsall Wood – Arnold, Mansell, Deakin, L. Harris, Ricketts, Boothe (captain), Wright, Martin, Edwards, Jackson, Steane, H. Harris, Manase, Taylor, Juxon, Aiton.

Thanks to Bill for the report and David for the photos – always appreciated.

For The Good of the Wood!

House fire in Walsall Wood yesterday evening

untitled-9

Wyre Close is just off Coppice Lane, Walsall Wood. imagery from Apple Maps.

Sad to report a house fire occurred yesterday evening (Saturday, 3rd December 2016) – apparently in Wyre Close, Walsall Wood.

West Midlands Fire Service at Aldridge tweeted:

West Midlands Fire Service and local police were on the scene of the fire within minutes, and crews from Aldridge Red Watch attended. The house was empty at the time, with the occupants out, so thankfully nobody was hurt.

An eyewitness praised the actions of both police and fire service for their levels of professionalism and care.

My sympathies to all concerned, and thanks to West Midlands Fire Service for keeping us safe.

If you have any more information, I’d welcome it please: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com, or comment here. Please be sensitive in any comments. Cheers.

Suspicious activity in Brownhills: Be on your guard

Untitled 9

A very peculiar trio have been operating in Brownhills…. Imagery from Bing! maps.

A strange one reaches me via a reader on Facebook – it seems there’s been an odd trio of people operating in Lichfield Road, Brownhills this afternoon (Saturday, 3rd December 2016), and in the current climate it seems best to be safe and warn readers to be aware.

The reader sent me the following message:

Hi Bob

I know this isn’t past related but there has been two women and a man in their 20s going in people’s gardens/side of houses peering through windows along the Lichfield road (by Smithy Forge pub) this afternoon.

The one women had a push chair without a baby in it. When confronted the lady she had a list with address on it. Some where highlighted and some with crosses on it.

She said she was Delivering Christmas cards, but had none with her and I didn’t know the woman.

Could you please alert your followers on here that live in the local area.

I have alerted the police about this.

This may indeed be innocent, but I genuinely can’t see how, really. Be on your guard folks, and do call the police is you see anything suspicious. At the very least, these people should be able to give a valid reason for their odd behaviour.

You can contact Walsall Police by dialling 101 (999 in an emergency, obviously) or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111

Beware: Children approached in Brownhills in two recent incidents

dji_0033

Clayhanger Common can be lonely and isolated, even on the brightest days, so take care. Image by Pete Hummings.

Somewhat worryingly, a couple of incidents involving men approaching schoolchildren have been reported today (Friday, 2nd December 2016) in the local area that will be of concern to all local residents, but particularly parents.

The first is from a Clayhanger mother, who issued the following alert:

Yesterday two boys on their way to Shire Oak School were approached by a man posing at first as a police officer then a security guard over The Spot (Clayhanger Common).

He told them they had to go a certain way as police were looking for a paedophile and was walking with them.

Luckily a lady taking her kids to school distracted him he then escorted her over the path enabling her to get a good description.

White male dark very short hair around 5ft 6. Tubby build wearing a hi vis with ‘Security’ on the back. He also had on his belt a set of handcuffs and a roll of yellow and black masking tape.

He also had what appears to be a walkie talkie like radio. Please take care walking over there.

Police have been informed.

Also, local schools have been sending out warning text messages this afternoon. This one from Walsall Wood School was shared by a reader:

WARNING – Incident 1st December 2016 at 8.22pm in Brownhills Town Centre, young girl was approached by man, late 50s, large and balding in dark coloured 4×4 type vehicle.

Girl ran away, any info. contact Police 101 quote log no 2119 of 1/12/16.

Additional police patrols will be in Brownhills area this evening.

And this version from Clayhanger Holy Trinity School:

Last night (Thursday 1 December) a suspicious incident took place whereby a young girl was approached in Brownhills town centre by a man in a dark coloured vehicle who shouted “come here”. The girl ran off and did not see the man again.

The incident was reported at 8.22pm so it is unlikely that she was on her way home from school, however we are requesting that schools be aware of the incident and on the look out for the man who is described as being aged in his late 50’s, large build and balding.

He was driving a small, dark coloured 4×4 type vehicle with a spare wheel on the back.

If anyone has any information they are asked to contact West Midlands Police on 101 quoting log number 2119 of 1/12/16.

Additional police patrols will be in the Brownhills area this evening.

Obviously these reports are very disturbing, and I would advise everyone to be cautious but keep a level head – and if you have any information at all, no matter how insignificant you think it may be, do call the police.

Please be careful if you’re out and about in the area by yourself; even in the middle of the day parts of our area can be very isolated, so take care where you go alone.

If you or your children are subject to anything like this, please do contact the police.

If you have any information related to this incident call Walsall Police on 101 or 0345 113 5000, or you may also speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

For advice on staying safe when out, visit: www.safer-streets.org

Cheers to the readers who helped with this story – appreciated,

Badger baiting taking place locally as wounded dog found in Brownhills

dscn3050

This is good to see – a notice I spotted this week in Walsall Wood. Please call the coppers if you see anything concerning.

Here’s an absolutely horrific story currently running across local media – on Monday evening, 28th November 2016 a local resident found a badly injured dog at Chester Road up by Brownhills Common – the dog, later christened Elf, was suffering horrific injuries consistent with being used as a terrier in badger baiting.

This is a an awful story, and Elf has suffered terribly, but I’m concerned at the same time for the plight and protection of local badgers and their setts – we have a considerable local badger population in the area which I’m careful not to discuss here for exactly this reason.

Our open spaces hereabouts are a haven for mustelids where they can be untroubled by farmers and their unfortunate road ‘accidents’, so evidence of baiting is a huge concern.

I ask any local people who walk or use local green spaces, parks and commons to be aware of their local badger setts can call the police or RSPCA in the event of any human disturbance at all.

We have our own dedicated wildlife crime officer covering the local area, whose notices I saw just this week. Please contact PC Richard Collins if you have any suspicions – call 101 and ask for extension 6001 or email richard.collins@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk.

My thanks and best wishes to the who found and are treating Elf, who by all accounts is a lovely dog. Please people, if you have any information, for the sake Elf and the local wildlife, please do contact the police or RSPCA.

Elf the dog with ‘horrific’ fighting and badger-baiting injuries rescued from Brownhills in Walsall

The RSPCA is appealing for information after a dog with injuries consistent with fighting with badgers was found in Walsall.

The female Parson Russell terrier-type dog, thought to be aged around eight to 10 years old, is missing part of her bottom jaw.

She was found in Chester Road, near Brownhills, by a member of the public on Monday, November 28.

The dog, who has been named Elf, was wearing a radio transmitter attached to a red collar (below) – a tactic used by people who take their dogs badger baiting so that they can locate their dog when they are down in a badger sett.

The person who found her took her to a local vet, who immediately called the RSPCA.

RSPCA inspector Laura Bryant, who is investigating, said: “Elf was clearly in a bad way, with fresh wounds to her ears and a horrific old injury to her jaw – which the vet said is consistent with fighting with a wild animal.

“She has been through such a lot but she is incredibly friendly.

elf3-canva-elfu

Image from the Walsall Advertiser.

“I suspect most of her life she has been used to locate badgers in their setts, clearly taking a battering in the process and never receiving vet treatment.

“She has either got lost in a badger sett or been dumped – either way, Elf is in the best place now and is getting a lot of love and attention from RSPCA staff.

“It is horrific to think of what she appears to have been used for and we are appealing for people to come forward with information.

“If you know anything about Elf and how she came to be this way, please call us in complete confidence on 0300 123 8018.

I see the thefts and criminality in Walsall Wood continnue – please be on the lookout for a  stolen Kymco Super 9s moped VX07CSY, taken on Monday evening 28th November 2016 from Ivy Grove just off Occupation Road, Walsall Wood.

Dear Bob

I was hoping you could put the feelers out for me regarding the theft of my partners motorbike.

It was stolen from our drive on Ivy Grove,Monday night between 6-11pm.

It has since been spotted by our son, being driven on Oak Park/KFC car park by two youths

It is an orange and black Kymco Super 9s 50cc moped, reg VX07 CSY.

Any information would be greatly appreciated and he is hoping it would be returned, as he’s lost without it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope to hear from you,

Kind regards
Lisa

If someone you know has just inexplicably tooled up on a bike, check it out, please – after all, it might be your stuff they steal next.

Anyone with information is urged to contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

You can always mail me in confidence if you’d rather – BrownhiullsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

On the matter of the ongoing issues in the area, I hear there is a Shire Oak neighbourhood watch group in the process of being set up, so any news on that I’ll let you all know.

Find out about a great local canal restoration with a guided walk this Saturday!

Find out how far they’ve come at Summerhill in just two years in this informative film for the Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust

Tom Reid from the Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust has been in touch to let us know about the organised walk of the SUmmerhill section that’s taking place this Saturday, 3rd December 2016.

Kicking off from the old Boat Pub on the A461 Walsall Road (now Oddfellows in the Boat)  at 11am, walkers will follow the Heritage Towpath Trail for a kilometre to the aqueduct over the M6 Toll Road.

Bring good boots and dress for the outdoors!

If you’re unaware of the local canal restoration that’s steadily progressing this excellent blog post by Christine Howles explains more about it. The trust run regular work parties and all are very much welcome, whether you’ve a specialist skill or not!

At the moment, the volunteers are not only beavering away on the Summerhill section, on the Walsall Road at Summerhill, but also at several sites, including Borrowcop on the A51 at Lichfield, and other places along the route of the lost line.

To find out more, please pop along to the Lichfield and Hateherton Canal Restoration Trust website here.

Canal Trust Plans Guided Walk

A guided walk along the Summerhill section of the Lichfield Canal will take place on Saturday December 3.

Walkers will be able to see the huge progress made this year by Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust volunteers and the many corporate volunteers from all over the country who have helped transform this section of the abandoned canal.

Starting at the Oddfellows in the Boat on Walsall Road at 11am, walkers will follow the Heritage Towpath Trail for a kilometre to the aqueduct over the M6 Toll Road.

Having learned about the plans for a walkway over the aqueduct and a future proposal for a lock and pumping station to allow narrowboats to cross the Toll Road, the walkers will return to the pub around 1pm where they will be able to buy a hot drink (or something stronger) to warm up.

There is no charge for this event but a donation would be appreciated.

Please make sure you wear suitable footwear as it could be muddy.
