Looking back on the tracks – what’s my line?

Brownhills Railway Station post closure in 1967 – note the weeds from the platforms and run down appearance. Image kindly donated to Chasewater Railway Museum by Peter Stamper.

In the recent rush of news posts, things have been slipping a bit, and in the melee that resulted, I’ve not had chance to alert readers interested in local railway history to a great collection of images posted recently on the fascinating Chasewater Railway Museum blog.

The images, posted a couple of weeks ago, feature shots of local railways, and I’ve never seen them before – the come via the collections of Ian Pell and Peter Stamper, who have generously donated them for use by the museum.

Above, Brownhills Railway Station from the bridge, showing more detail of the building than I’ve seen before. Note the infamous Superalloys chimney on the skyline. Below, the disused Walsall Wood Station from the rail bridge on High Street, as a train passes. Those are the spoil heaps of Walsall Wood Colliery in the distance. But what are the vehicles in the yard?

The images raise some interesting questions, like where exactly was the one below taken? And for more of that, click through to the wonderful post featuring the full collection of images here.

Thanks to Chasewater Railway for sharing the photos, but most of all, thanks to Ian and Peter for donating them; these are wonderful and sure to be of interest to all local history enthusiasts.

Anything to add? Please feel free – either comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

This photo is a bit of a mystery, and Ian’s comments on it are fascinating. Anyone recognise it? Image kindly donated to Chasewater Railway Museum by Peter Stamper.

Hey folks…

People who  have been sharing the cash robbery story at Crash bang Wallop on Facebook  – check the date. This is a very old story from 2011, no idea why it’s being shared around again – it’s five years old!

In other news, following his fifth passing on social media, Tony Hart remains, sadly, deceased.

Watling Street School burgled over half term – did you see anything?

Untitled 6

Watling Street School is a great school. Sad they had to lose equipment in this way. Imagery from Bing! Maps.

It’s time, I’m very much afraid, to issue another warning – it seems local burglars are at is again – in this case they targeted Watling Street School up on the A5 twice over half term, with computer equipment being stolen on both occasions.

Eryl Powell, from the school, said:

Hello Bob

Warning to local schools etc. – Watling Street School broken into twice during half-term, both same method – breeze blocks smashed through windows.

Laptops and iPads stolen.

Nursery kids’ toys showered with broken glass everywhere, from smashed door.

Thanks,
Eryl

If you’re offered a cheap laptop or iPad, think hard about where it might have come from, and by all means grub the people flogging them into the rozzers – the stuff is probably nicked. Next time, it could be your stuff they take.

Anyone with information on these or other crimes in the recent spate of thefts is urged to contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or you can speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Guinness clocks and a portion of chips – what do you know?

mbp018

Lichfield Road was almost as much a major artery to Brownhills as High Street itself. Image from ‘Memories of Brownhills Past’ by Clarice Mayo and Geoff harrington.

After all the fuss and madness of the last couple of weeks, let’s hope things settle down again and we can get back to what we normally do – parish notices and local history…

With that in mind, I had this one in from old friend of the blog Mike Sarsfield a couple of weeks ago, all the way from Wales, and he asks a couple of great questions about  old Brownhills:

Hi Bob,

Mike Sarsfield here from Swansea…

As Christmas gets nearer I wonder if any of your readers remember the Guiness clock that used to appear near the Cinema/Garretts bakery shop? I believe that it would appear around Christmas time (1950s).

I noticed an item on your site ‘A walk up Lichfield Road with Aer Reg‘ posted on February 15th 2014, that the poem featured, has ‘In row of houses grand and tall, Was Jeffries fish shop a meal for all.’

I believe that this was my great grandmothers shop. Are there any of your readers who can verify it please?

I was born in No. 20 Lichfield road (which no longer exists), but I was always told that my great grandmother used to sell fish & chips from the front room.

Best wishes to you and all your readers

Mike Sarsfield.

A coupe of great questions there from Mike – upon which I have no idea, so I’m hoping readers can help? And Mike, it’s always great to hear from you, thanks for a great couple of questions!

I’ll repeat the poem in question below – it’s best mentally read in Reg’s voice, the chap is irrepressible and his spark is infectious. Reg, you may recall, kindly donated the 1934 Brownhills Carnival cinefilm, and can be heard narrating it.

Come Walk With Me

Come walk with me down Lichfield Road
A second High Street, my childhood holds
Start at the Top – a club serene
Cross the road Brewe’s cakes a dream
With matronly grace the sisters oversaw
Eclairs and scones, pastries by the score
Blood tub once held in a nearby field
The smell of horse hoof as the Smithy hammer wield
In row of houses grand and tall
Was Jeffries fish shop a meal for all
Then Mrs. Pearson’s tiny shop
For a piny or toy we used to pop
Challis renown for his skill with the brush
Whitehouse the builder his cart would push
Building a shed or chicken run?
Timber from Smith the Smithy’s son
A club was started by the British Legion
Alas it faded into another region,
Seeds Lane corner stood a shop
Harvey’s for your sweets and pop

To kids of my generation, this was a chip shop. Now demolished, there are houses there. Image from ‘Memories of Old Brownhills’ by Clarice Mayo and Geoff Harrington.

Brothers and sisters by the name of Turner
The sale of apples a small income earner
Call in at Jones’s, Woodbines far many
The ‘Railway Tavern’s pints drunk by many
Then a front room shop, ‘Walker’ by name
Hair cut by ‘Kelly’, trim was his fame
Then the farm of Oliver Twist
Cows, Poultry and horses endless the list
Today they say organic for garden is new
But Oliver’s cow muck was there sixty years agew
The empire of Beattie of Biggins name
Open all hours to serve you her aim
And then to the Memo hours danced away
Dear old Sal Gripton taught her own special way
Fishers’ for shoes, Trussell for flowers
Then Mrs. Oak’s for pianoforte hours
For grocery or coal Suttons next stop
Dear old Gert reigned over her shop
Important to all her skills not to lack
Was nurse Seedlwuse of 109 and her maternity pack
Beacon the Printer made his mark
When the world developed the hall pen lark
Then the chips of Alice Wood
Cooked as only good food should,
Perce with trolley from the station would fetch
Ice packed fish the day’s fresh scale ketch,
For Radio Battery Electrical fame
The next shop carried Syd Law’s name
Mrs. Cooper there for Millinery
Sankeys Club one of three
Bostons, Mallard, good old Co-op
Yes in Lichfield Road, you could all shop
Ice-cream made by yow yow Plumb
Breezes Club run by  Ernie run
Craddocks Coal and the Chemical stack
Yes in my childhood walk they all come back.

Wood find their mojo to beat Tividale

Tividale 001

Image kindly supplied by David Evans

Walsall Wood FC travelled on Tuesday evening (1st November 2016) to Tividale, and came home with a good win, hopefully signalling a return to form.

Walsall Wood Football Club are a top local side with a big-hearted faithful who know how to have a great time supporting their lads, and welcome all to enjoy great local soccer. The boys from The Wood have been at the heart of the local community for a century or more, so please do go check out a match or two if you’re curious.

Bill Shaw was there as ever, and cautiously welcomed what he saw:

Hiya Bob,

A step in the right direction, a win to start November off.

Tividale, let’s not forget are in 21st place, Shepshed Dynamo on Saturday will give us a better idea of if we have banished the lethargy that was painfully obvious for all to see during October. Ashley Jackson started his first game since breaking his ankle on 17th August, he collected a knock on the ankle in the 43rd minute and was taken off. We are hoping it’s not too bad. Joey Butlin came on and scored, his first goal since his brace against Brocton on 23rd August.

New young signing Romeao Hutton with a goal and an assist looks an exciting prospect, but time will tell.

Hopefully more good news to report on Bonfire Night.

P.P. League Cup
Tividale 0 v 3 Walsall Wood

A comfortable win for Wood to start November off, to move on to an away game in Round Two at either AFC Wulfrunians or Shawbury United.

A lively start by both sides but both teams seeing neat approach play break down on the edge of the opposition  box.

On 13 minutes a clever interchange wide right involving Craig Deakin and Romeao Hutton (making his Wood debut) won Wood a right wing corner.  The flag kick to the far post met by a header by Ben Birch, the ball bouncing clear off the bar. Six minutes later a left wing free kick was played into the path of Steven Hayles to fire first time wide.

Dale’s first effort came on 20 minutes, Dan Smith releasing Lewis McPike into the centre of the box only for him to fire straight into the arms of keeper Andy Hughes.

Within a minute Wood were ahead, the ball played forward to Karl Edwards to release Hutton into the centre of the box and he opened his Wood account with a rising drive into the top right hand corner of the net.

An immediate reply saw an intricate right to left move across the face of the Wood box, Birch with a great tackle stopping Smith.  On 30 minutes McPike was released into the right of the box, his low drive deflected just wide.

Tividale finished the half on top but couldn’t break down a well organised defence.

Two minutes into the second half a long clearance by Wood keeper Hughes was headed on by Edwards to find Drew Aiton, he cleverly made space and fired a low drive just wide.

On 51 minutes a ball into the right of the box was met by Smith, keeper Hughes out quickly and bravely to save at his feet.

On 58 minutes Hutton raced clear wide right and crossed to the far post, Joey Butlin getting to the ball a split second before keeper Luke Kriskinans to force the ball home. Nine minutes later Wood wrapped the game up, a left wing corner was half cleared to Drew Aiton who found Leon Taylor on the left of the six yard box, his low drive making it three-nil as the player coach kept up his ‘Supersub’ tag.

On 76 minutes a piece of magic by Taylor and Butlin put Hutton in on goal, his first time rising drive deflected just over. A minute later a long ball forward was collected at pace by Taylor, he held off two defenders and fired wide of the left hand post. Butlin, Aiton and Taylor all went close as Wood kept the pressure on, but they couldn’t add to their goal tally.

Wood’s second win in eight games, they played with far more purpose and passion last night than they had in previous outings.  Let’s not get carried away by this result, it was lowly Tividale remember, Shepshed Dynamo away on Saturday will present a far sterner test, but it was a step in the right direction.

Bill Shaw.

The Teams:

Tividale – Kriskinans, Hurdman, Bustin, Wedderburn, M. Hunt, Stevens (captain), McPike, Grainger, Smith, J. Hunt, Jones, Bates, Potter, Preston.

Walsall Wood – Hughes, Deakin, Hayles, Boothe, Birch, Juxon, Hutton, Harris (captain), Edwards, Beckett, Jackson, Mansell, Taylor, Butlin, Graham, Aiton.

Walsall Wood F.C. As ever, thanks to Bill for the report – always appreciated – for The Good of the Wood!

Remember, remember – local bonfires coming up…

Our event – the Brownhills bonfire – is on 12th November 2016. Click for a larger version.

I see loads of you are searching for details of local Bonfire Night events and so I thought I’d give the following a push…

This year’s ‘official’ Brownhills Walsall Council operated bonfire and fireworks display is at Holland Park as usual, but not until Saturday 12th November 2016 – one team are operating all Walsall displays, so it’s one per week. That’ll be £4/£1 entry for Adults/kids and parking is £1. That kicks off at 6pm, with firework display at 8pm. Full details on the flyer above.

arboretum-bonfire-2016

I’d be interested to see the size of the Stavros Flatley fanbase in Walsall, but this does look like a great event. Click for a larger version.

There will, however, be a display on the Saturday 5th at the Arboretum in Walsall, with ticket prices £5/£2 for adults and kids in advance, or £8/£3 on the gate – there will be a host of entertainment, and it all kicks off at 5:30pm, and gates close at 7:15pm. Details on the flyer above.

14937447_10210483647544644_3662796977238354640_n-2

The Yates burn-up is always popular, and free entry, too!

Also on the 5th is the popular display at Yates Club, at Lime Lane in Norton Canes – that’s free to attend, there are bars, hot food and it’s always a good night. Display begins at 7:30, but get there earlier!

There’s also a great display and fire on at Walsall Wood Football Club at Oak Park on Sunday Evening, 6th November 2016 – that kicks off at 5pm with fireworks at 6:30pm. That’s always a lovely family do, with tickets at £4/£2, and a family ticket available at a pocket-pleasing £10.

The Sunday Walsall Wood FC Bonfire is always a lovely event.

If you’ve got a bonfire or fireworks event you’d like adding to the list, please do get in touch or comment here – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Wonderful news from Lichfield Waterworks Trust

Images from within Sandfields kindly supplied by Dave Moore.

Dave Moore, the Sandfields Pumping Station champion and public historian extraordinaire has been in touch with some great news about Lichfield’s greatest hidden asset, Sandfields Pumping Station and his campaign with the Lichfield Waterworks Trust to preserve this remarkable building for the community.

On Monday 31st October 2016, Dave and other members of the trust finally gained access to the building and the remarkable steam engine it contains after long and painstaking negotiations with Persimmon Homes, the current owner.

The trust announced it had been successful in securing the building for the future as revealed here last year.

Dave posted the above pictures – the first taken within Sandfields for a very long time – and had this to say:

News Flash!

Today the team met with Persimmon Homes Ltd. at Sandfields Pumping Station to finalise the access licence.

We are very pleased to say that Persimmon Homes have done an amazing amount of work to clean up the pumping station, make safe the wells, boreholes and guard rails and they have completed an asbestos survey.

With just a few small items to finalise, we should be looking at obtaining the keys in about two weeks’ time.

Great news indeed and a very big thank you to everyone in making this project happen, doing the impossible sometimes takes a little longer.

This is great news, and I’d like to congratulate Dave, Chris Pattison and all at the Trust who’ve fought so hard for this – and I also owe them an apology, as I missed advertising their public meeting last month :-(…

Do pop over to Dave Moore’s blog and check out the history of Sandfields Pumping Station, an almost forgotten gem – the group also has a Facebook page.

Dave is, of course, one of the leading lights of Lichfield Discovered, along with Kate ‘Cardigan’ Gomez from Lichfield Lore.

Fine people, working entirely from their own volition to preserve community history. What’s not to love?

Police release more details of Brownhills West incident

14601133_1365954906792099_1434369713744358336_n.jpg

Following the much-reported criminal incident in Brownhills West yesterday, when two local men were stabbed, a further statement has been issued from West Midlands Police this lunchtime (Monday 31st October 2016), – they are continuing to investigate the events that occurred, resulting in a 32 year old local man being detained.

The incident was originally covered live in a remarkable Facebook live streaming session by Brownhills resident Bill Bishop, who filmed emergency services attending the incident following a crash between a car and an ambulance in Wilkin Road, near the junction with Cherwell Drive and broadcast it live as it happened.

West Midlands Police issued the following statement at 12.23pm today, Monday 31st October 2016:

A man remains in police custody this morning on suspicion of carrying out a double stabbing and a knifepoint shop robbery during a 10-minute crime spree in Walsall yesterday (30 Oct).

Officers were called to McCalls newsagent in Shannon Drive, Brownhills, at 4.35pm by a woman reporting a knifeman assaulting staff and demanding till takings.

At around the same time response police colleagues were directed to an address in nearby Tamar Close where two men had been stabbed − and moments later it’s understood the same man stole a car after threatening the occupants of a neighbouring flat.

The car − a Renault Clio − was then involved in a collision with an ambulance before a 32-year-old local man was confronted by officers and detained.

We are still trying to piece together the precise timeline of events − but it’s understood the offender stole a car following the stabbings and then collided with an ambulance that was en route to treat the injured men.

The suspect was behaving aggressively and threatened officers with a large knife… officers used taser to secure his safe detention and to protect themselves, ambulance staff, and the public.

One man has suffered serious chest wounds, while the other suffered injuries to his abdomen and head. Our officers provided swift first aid at the scene before being handed over to paramedics; thankfully none of the injuries are life-threatening and they are recovering in hospital.

A member of staff and a customer were also treated for injuries after being assaulted inside the newsagent.

We are still keen to hear from people who witnessed any of the incidents − or who has mobile phone or CCTV footage − and have not yet spoken to police. They can call the Violent Crime Team at Wednesfield police station on the 101 number.

Enquiries continue and if you feel you have information to spare, please do contact West Midlands Police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.

My sympathies remain with the victims of this shocking and senseless crime.

Official Police statement on Brownhills West incident

14601133_1365954906792099_1434369713744358336_n.jpg

As you’ll no doubt be aware by now, there’s been a serious police incident in Brownhills West this afternoon (Sunday, 30th October 2016) at around 5pm, when there was a break-in at a property in Tamar Close, Brownhills West during which two people were stabbed, then a subsequent attempted robbery of a nearby convenience store followed by a head on crash with an ambulance rushing to attend the stabbing.

My sympathies, as I’m sure are those of the readers, are extended to the victims and I hope they make a speedy recovery. This is a terrible thing to happen in our community.

There is coverage of the incident at Walsall Advertiser here, The Express & Star here and the Birmingham Mail here.

The incident was originally covered live in a remarkable Facebook live streaming session by Brownhills resident Bill Bishop, who filmed emergency services attending the incident following the crash in Wilkin Road, near the junction with Cherwell Drive and broadcast it live as it happened.

Bill has been brilliant with this, and his dry commentary of the unfolding horror is a local legend in the making.

West Midlands Police issued the following statement at 6:08pm.

A man has been arrested after two people were stabbed in Brownhills this afternoon.

The man, thought to be in his 30s, broke into a property on Tamar Road around 5pm and stabbed the two occupants, both men, before stealing their vehicle.

He attempted to rob a local convenience store in Shannon Drive before driving off and colliding with an ambulance responding to the stabbing, on Wilkin Road.

After a short foot chase he was detained by officers and taken into custody.

The two men have been taken to hospital where there injuries are described as serious.

There are several officers in the area as our enquiries continue.

Obviously, enquiries continue and if you feel you have information to spare, please do contact West Midlands Police on 101 or contact Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.

Serious incident ongoing in Brownhills West

There is currently an ongoing serious police incident in Brownhills West. Information appreciated. More as I get it.

6:08pm:  It appears a car has crashed into the front of an ambulance in Wilkin Road, Brownhills. What precipitated the incident is unclear, and there’s a lot of rumour circulating, but someone does appear to have been detained by the police.

There’s a Facebook live feed recording available on the timeline of the wonderful Bill Bishop – click here.

I have made enquiries with West Midlands Police and am awaiting a reply.

I’d like to thank Bill Bishop who’s been a star in all this.

Cheers

Bob

Shire Oak Pub set to reopen, Ogley Club and Drunken Duck close

14753726_10154697513323982_7631243118687613399_o-1

Thanks to Matt on the Shire Oak Facebook group – the closed Shire Oak Pub is due to re-oipen end of November.

Sad news that over the last few days, Ogley Club in Ogley Road, Brownhills, has been unexpectedly shut – rumours circulate as to why, ranging from it’s being refurbished under new owners and other redevelopment proposals.

If I get any solid news, I’ll share it here – and I’d welcome contact from the owners with anything they’d like to share here regarding the popular club’s future.

Meanwhile, Matt from the wonderful Shire Oak group on Facebook has obtained a statement from the pub’s owners, Punch Taverns, that the closed hostelry will be reopening hopefully on the 30th November 2016 following ‘refurbishment’.

Readers will recall the pub was already refurbished extensively in 2015, and opened to somewhat middling reviews for food and service. It closed a couple of months ago, with many saying it would reopen within three weeks, but it has stayed closed. Recently, work has been going on so let’s hope that when this once popular house reopens and is a success.

Meanwhile, on Walsall Wood High Street, the Drunken Duck, andother once popular pub also closed suddenly at the beginning of October. Again, accounts vary markedly as the local rumour mill goes into overdrive, but there’s some thoughtful analysis on the wonderful Piglog by The Stymaster, who often used to frequent the place.

If you have news to share, or know anything, please don’t hesitate to mail me or comment: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Please note I may have to edit or withoold comments for legal reasons… your understanding is appreciated.

The Shire Oak junction just isn’t the same with the formerly bright lights of the landmark pub extinguished.

Don’t panic – West Midlands Fire Service undertaking training exercise at Oak Park

I’ve been contacted by a few people concerned at events ongoing at the old Oak Park Leisure Centre in Walsall Wood, where a large number of fire engines, smoke and other alarming stuff has been seen: fear not, it’s a training exercise by Bloxwich Fire Station.

The exercise, called Antioch (who comes up with these names?) has been documented by @westmidsfire on Twitter here.

Emergency services often undertake training exercises in disused buildings – they previously used Greenwood House in Burntwood for sniffer dog training and the former mental hospitals at Burntwood and Great Barr before their demolition.

If you’re wondering about the eventual demolition of the old Oak Park and completion of landscaping, I’m reliably informed this should be underway within the next couple of months as technical issues are resolved with the site.

An unplayable Lye?

P1000595

The Woodmen haven’t had a great time of late. The must be better times around the corner..

Yesterday Afternoon (Saturday 29th October 2016) Walsall Wood were at home entertaining Lye Town, and sadly, yet again an injury ravaged side were beaten.

Bill Shaw watched with grim determination and submitted the following report:

Hiya Bob,

Another defeat dropped us one more place to eleventh, as Black October thankfully came to an end with just one point from the month.

Joey Butlin and Ashley Jackson came off the bench, as did short term injury victim Drew Aiton, only time will tell if they are back to fitness because at the moment if you can walk you make the 16.

We are now closer to the bottom than the top, but things have surely got to change, Lye Town moaned they had four players out injured – Wood had fourteen– enough said.

Just keep the faith, things can only get better, it’ll soon be Christmas.

Walsall Wood 1 v 3 Lye Town

Wood ended October with another defeat as the visitors leapfrogged long time leaders Westfields to move into second place. One-nil down at the interval, Wood got back into the game but conceded within two minutes of the equaliser and into injury time Ben Billingham sewed the game up with a well-crafted goal.

On four minutes a central free kick for Town was flicked on to James Spray on the left of the box, Craig Deakin saving the day with a superbly timed challenge. Six minutes later a ball from wide right was fed left by Mark Danks to Sam Tye, his rising drive finger-tipped over by debutant keeper Sam Arnold.  After 20 minutes Spray capitalised on a misplaced pass before a clever chip inside was superbly controlled by Danks, he held off a challenge as he fired past Arnold to put Town ahead. Five minutes later it was Simon Williams powering through the centre only to finish weakly. Two minutes later Matty Johnson powered over halfway, his lovely ball forward put Spray clear into the left of the box, his rising drive touched over by Arnold at full stretch.

On 31 minutes Steven Hayles crossed from wide on the Wood left, the ball headed out to Anthony Juxon to hit a first time effort high and wide.

Two minutes later Spray collected the ball from a left wing throw, his ball to the near post hit first time by Billingham, Arnold with a superb full length save. Three minutes later Scott Gennard ran through the centre of the Wood defence and set up Danks, his low drive well held by Arnold. A long ball forward by keeper Dean Coleman was headed on by Spray to Billingham who fed Danks on the left of the box to run on and fire wide of the near post.

On 42 minutes a long ball forward by Deakin saw Coleman race from his area to head clear from Karl Edwards.

Both teams started the second half brightly then on 54 minutes Harry Harris robbed a defender in the centre circle, seeing Coleman off his line he lobbed the keeper from 45 yards to put Wood level.

Parity lasted just two minutes, a pair of Wood defenders collided as they went for the same ball, Billingham pounced, ran on and released Spray into the left of the box, he made no mistake to restore the lead.

On 61 minutes Deakin won a right wing corner, Harris delivered to the near post and Juxon powered a header the wrong side of the post.

On 71 minutes Billingham raced through the centre, his rising drive bouncing to safety off the bar. Six minutes later a superb 60 yard diagonal ball by Hayles into the right of the box found Ashley Jackson, Coleman immediately down to save at his feet.  10 minutes later a long ball forward by Ben Birch saw keeper Coleman race from the area to head clear from Joey Butlin.

Two minutes into injury time Billingham collected the ball from a left wing throw, slalomed into the box and gave Arnold no chance as he fired a rising drive into the top right hand corner.

Another much changed Wood side still decimated by injuries somehow stayed in the game, until injury time. With long term injury victims Joey Butlin and Ashley Jackson making cameo appearances is there finally light at the end of what has been a very dark October tunnel.

Its league cup action on Tuesday night at Tividale followed on Saturday by a visit to Shepshed, never an easy place to go to.

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

Walsall Wood – Arnold, Deakin, Hayles, Beckett, Birch, Edwards, Juxon, Harris (captain), Taylor, Taylor Boyce, Wright, Aiton, Adams, Jackson, Butlin, Hughes.

Lye Town – Coleman, Johnson, Meacham, Williams, Dallison, Tye, Danks, Gennard, Spray, Billingham, Jevons (captain), Jones, Till, Henry, Hindley, McDonnell.

My thanks to Bill for a great report – and for all those he selflessly writes and send to me after every match. They really are popular, and a credit to Bill and the club. Walsall Wood have a reputation for being a great, community spirited group of people and these reports demonstrate that – it’s an honour and joy to feature them here.

For the good of the Wood!

Third local fire this week sees car burnt out near Clayhanger last night

cv5icrtxyaaipcz-1

Not again! Image posted on Twitter by the Aldridge Fire Station Twitter feed.

Someone said yesterday of the local spate of fires that such things come in threes – that certainly appears to be the case as in the early hours of Saturday, 29th October 2016 a car was set on fire deliberately in a wooded area near Clayhanger Bridge, Brownhills.

This follows the other fires this week at the former Terrace Restaurant and the stables near Whitehorse Road.

The Aldridge Fire Station feed tweeted at 12:43am:

The Advertiser beat me to it today and carry this report which can be read in full with more pictures at their site:

FIRE crews rushed to tackle a blazing car near Walsall which is believed to have been set alight by arson.

West Midlands Fire Service attended the incident close to Clayhanger Bridge, Brownhills, at 12.43am.

Crews extinguished the blaze, which completely engulfed the car, identified as a Fiat Punto.

The car, which was down a bank, had been deliberately set on fire and was being considered a case of arson, a spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service told the Advertiser.

Crews left the scene at 1.05am.

Anyone with any information should contact West Midlands Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers, free and in confidence, on 0800 555 111 or through the Anonymous Online Form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

No personal details are taken, information cannot be traced or recorded and you will not need to go to court.

No injuries have been reported, and yet again I’d like to express my thanks for the dedication of the Fire Service for keeping us safe.

Fun Halloween kids party this afternoon in Brownhills!

14741865_10211064523952882_1149231441_n

Why not bring the kids for some Halloween fun?

Friend of the blog Jamie Bailey has been in touch to ask if I’d give the Catshill Community Association Halloween children’s party event a plug – it takes place this afternoon, Saturday 29th October 2016, at the Catshill Community Centre, Catshill Road, Brownhills, near Millfield School.

It’s running from 4-6pm, and only £1.50 for kids, and tickets can be purchased from Amanda on 01543 361958.

You can read about the refurbishment of this great community family courtesy of Walsall Housing Group at this excellent Walsall Advertiser article from earlier this week.

Jamie had this to say about the Catshill Community Association, which he’s involved with:

The Catshill Community Centre is a great place that has been fully refurbished by Walsall Housing Group for the local community to use.

There are a variety of users from toddler groups, women’s groups etc. We as a commitee are determined to get the centre used to its full capacity and bring back some of that community spirit that’s seems to be lacking.

We always welcome New committee members and would love to see new and old faces.

Firefighters tackle second fire in Brownhills this week

cvy8hi4wiaanpgl-jpg-large

Image montage posted on Twitter by West Midlands Fire Service as @BloxwichFire.

I note that there’s been another fire in Brownhills this evening, following the one earlier in the week that occurred at the former Terrace Restaurant in Newtown, on the A5 – this evening (Thursday 27th October 2016) a fire seems to have taken place in a stable near the old trotting track off Whitehorse Road, Brownhills.

Scant information is available, but indications are that the incident was relatively minor although Whitehorse Road was closed for a period.

There is no suggestion of a link between the two incidents, but I’d wager the half term school holiday was common to both…

The Bloxwich Fire Station twitter feed of West Midlands Fire Service tweeted at 7:55pm:

The Aldridge Fire Station feed tweeted at 9:23pm:

No injuries have been reported, and I’d like to express my thanks to the dedication of the Fire Service for keeping us safe.

Looking down on a lost line

Good to my word, and thanks to the generosity of drone-pilot extraordinaire Steve Martin, I can share with readers today the results of a wonderful photographic flight Steve made last weekend over Pelsall North Common and the Cannock Extension Canal arm, which is now truncated at the A5 near Norton Canes.

The flight also covers the area around Yates Boatyard and what remains of the Grove Colliery, including the sensitively restored landfill there.

Steve uses a professional-level DJI drone, and is very skilled in using it to obtain stunning images and video – his last gallery, of Chasewater and Brownhills Common went down reallyy well. A few months ago, I featured film and images Steve kindly shared from a daytime flight where he recreated a wonderful 1960s image of Brownhills as it is today, and later, his stunning night flight over Brownhills.

You can regularly see other examples of Steve’s work on his usual haunt, the popular and fascinating Old photos from Hednesford, Chadsmoor and Cannock group on Facebook,

Steve grew up in Brownhills where his family had the chip shop that used to be on the Lichfield Road, Brownhills for a while, and Steve has great memories of the Lichfield Road area, of which I’m still looking for old images if you know to any, please do get in touch.

Thanks to Steve for yet another beautiful gallery, and Steve is happy to talk about his work if you’re interested. You can hook up with him on Facebook here.

The Chase Inn: a great local pub

The Chase Inn at Newtown, Brownhills goes from strength to strength – there’s not only great ale and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, but great live music too – and tonight, Thursday 27th October 2016,  the pub has it’s regular Acoustic Night.

There’s an additional treat this Friday (28th October 2016), with the much-demanded return of mad Uke-mongers Uke-2 on stage from 8pm – they tore the house down when they last appeared and you’re guaranteed a great night.

On Saturday night from 8pm, there’s another welcome return – that of the band Dark Pages, plus a halloween fancy dress disco until late – and it’s free entry to boot.

Topping it all off for a great weekend, there’s another acoustic session on Sunday afternoon from Dan Firman from 3pm until 730pm.

The Chase inn said:

Don’t forget our Thursday night acoustic session, running from 8pm-late!

Dan Firman will be playing the best of acoustic music, but you will also have the opportunity to grab the mic and sing your faves while Dan plays!

Drinks across the bar are £2.50 a pint and we will be having some free bar snacks too.

Come along for a great night and support local live raw music… See you all there!

Why not get down there? You’re guaranteed an excellent time…

For the satnav folk, the address is: 6 Watling Street, Newtown, Brownhills WS8 6JS

A Ferrie on the cut – but who with, and where?

Images kindly supplied by Emma Smith

I love how the blog allows stories to unfold slowly, gradually adding more and more information and evidence as time passes; and so it is with the story of the Charles Ferrie narrowboat, which Ralph Ferrie donated to Brownhills Youth Club in 1962, and was named in memory of his father.

The original coverage of the story is here, complete with discussion of the youth cub and members.

Well, over the weekend Emma Smith got in touch with a collection of recently unearthed photos of the Charles Ferrie boat on a day trip… and we’d like to know where, please?

Emma wrote:

Hi Bob

My dad’s brother Maurice Smith recently came up with these fine photos of a day out on the cut on a Charles Ferrie narrowboat.

Can anyone help with the names of lads on board and the locations, please?

Maurice seems to remember Wolverhampton way but not sure.

One lad for sure other than my Uncle Maurice Smith is Edward Hassle who later became a Teacher at my old Primary School – Castlefort JMI in Walsall Wood.

Many Thanks
Emma Smith

Thanks Emma for that, a great contribution to the history of the Ferrie empire – it’s hard with such a larger than life character sometimes to get past the rumour and mythology, so every bit of material we can share and add to the story is wonderful. Thanks for your generosity.

If you can identify either places or people in these photos, or indeed, can add anything to the story, please do comment here, or mail me on BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

Fire incident at the former Terrace Restaurant, Brownhills

Image of the ongoing incident at the Terrace kindly supplied by Martin Payton.

Sadly, it appears there’s a fire incident ongoing (9:40pm, Monday 24th October 2016) at the former Terrace Restaurant, in Newton, on the A5 Watling Street in Brownhills – West Midlands Fire Service crews are in attendance from Aldridge, Bloxwich, Walsall and Staffordshire.

Remarkable video from local YouTuber UKVideoYouTube/SloggerVlogger

West Midlands Fire Service tweeted at 20:59pm:

And later, at 21:34pm

It’s not currently known how serious the incident is, but no injuries have been reported.

Thanks to all who helped – Paul Sanders, Martyn Payton, Rocky Sprogs, SloggerVlogger and more.

An uncommon flight over Chasewater and Brownhills

Drone whizz, top photographer and former Brownhills lad Steve Martin has been kind enough once more to send me not one, but two batches of images this weekend of familiar places around the local area, photographed from an aerial point of view – this first, above, features some great shots of Chasewater, Brownhills Common and Birch Coppice.

Steve uses a professional-level DJI drone, and is very skilled in using it to obtain stunning images and video – his last gallery, of Brownhills by night, was immensely popular. A few months ago, I featured film and images Steve kindly shared from a daytime flight where he recreated a wonderful 1960s image of Brownhills as it is today.

Iknow Steve is also working on some very interesting video that will take your breath away – but I’ll hold back on the preview of that until it’s ready.

You can regularly see other examples of Steve’s work on his usual haunt, the popular and fascinating Old photos from Hednesford, Chadsmoor and Cannock group on Facebook,

A wish for the Wishing Well?

roma_cond

We all like a good greasy spoon, but do you recall one locally called The Wishing Well? Image from Russell Davies/Typepad.

Here’s a quick enquiry I had in over the last few days that’s got me stumped – the name sounds awfully familiar, but I can’t bring to mind a Wishing Well Cafe locally, can you?

This is certainly one for the local drivers, former drivers and members of teams that met in Caffs to ponder on.

Helen Hill asked:

Hello Bob

I remember stopping at a cafe en route to Bolton from Luton in the 1960s.

My father preferred to avoid Spaghetti junction so we always circumvented the bottom of the M6 choosing to join it further north.

My brother is insistent that this cafe was in Brownhills.

I am sure it is now long gone, but I would love to know if there are any records of it.

Many thanks
Helen Hill

Please do get in touch if you can help, and put both Helen and me out of our misery! Comment here or mail me please: BrownhillsBob at googlemail dot com. Cheers.

Charles Henry Ruddock: A local Victorian in the Great War

image001

Charles Henry Ruddock from a family photograph. Image very kindly donated by Dorothy Ruddock via David Evans.

David Evans’ painstaking recording and sharing of the Ruddock family archive continues today with a look at the Great War history of Walsall Wood man, Charles Henry Ruddock.

A few weeks ago, we kicked the series off with an article about Charles’ history in the army in the late Victorian era and South Africa, which has caused no small amount of debate and ponderance amongst the blog readers.

This occurred following the wonderful material that recently came to light, so kindly donated by Julie Whitehouse and Dorothy Ruddock who have continued to share a hugely disparate range of fascinating family ephemera, most of which is still yet to be published here.

This is the second instalment of the history of Charles Henry Ruddock, with more to come soon.

A good starting point on the subject is the post here regarding the Cape by Janet Davies Warallo followed by the post about Dulce Domum and the Ruddock family photos.

My thanks again to Dorothy, Julie and David – if you have anything to add, please do: comment here or mail me, please – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

Charles Henry Ruddock and the Great War

Charles was ‘Embodied into Service’ on 5th August 1914. He had first joined the Army in 1890, where he served 21 years, 17 in the South Staffs Regiment, followed by 4 years in the Military Provost Staff Corps.

image003

That must have been the equivalent of an IT qualification in the day! Image very kindly donated by Dorothy Ruddock via David Evans.

Now the Great War had been declared and Territorial Sergeant C Ruddock was ’embodied service’ (source: Charles Ruddock service records).

The family notes record that he served under Colonel Wingfield Stratford, who commanded the North Midlands Division, I understand. Charles was awarded the DCM during this conflict, and was promoted to Warrant Officer in March 1915. He was posted to Europe on 3 March 1915, and returned to England to recover from a wound, on 22 July 1918. He retired from the Army on 22 October 1918. He had served another four and a half years in the Regular Army.

Charles’ Military History Sheet records that he was awarded the DCM for

‘consistent good work since the Division landed. He has worked night and day getting stores up to the trenches on responsible and detached work. He has shown great energy and tact’ vide London Gazette, 11th March, 1916.

Charles returned home to live with his wife Ada and family in Ogley Square, Mill Road, Brownhills.[Worth reading that link, Ogley Square was no place fit for heroes – Bob]

Dorothy kindly shared the following images and ephemera from the family connection:

Woodmen in Westfields wipeout

100_0496

Image from a previous Wood visit to Westfields, kindly supplied by Simon Evans.

Yesterday afternoon (22nd October 2016), Walsall Wood F.C. travelled to Allpay Park at Hereford to face Westfields, who sadly beat the Woodmen 6-0.

Before we kick off with the match report, do check out Walsall Wood Saints’ appeal for your help here. That looks like a great project we can all get behind.

Bill was at the somewhat daftly named allpay.park to witness the match, and submitted the following report:

Hiya Bob,

The report says it all, it looks bad but it could have been so much closer. We didn’t have a Sirdic Grant who at times was virtually un-playable, full backs Craig Deakin and Steven Hayles must feel relieved they aren’t due to meet him again until April 29th.

A silver lining, youngsters Josh Mansell and Romano Graham made substitute appearances and impressed on their first team debuts.

It’s difficult to keep the faith at present, but stay in there guys, we’ll get there, would I lie to you?

Fourth placed Lye Town are the visitors on Saturday, no easy fixtures in the Midland League Premier Division remember.

F.A. Vase Round 1.
Westfields 6 v 0 Walsall Wood.

Looking at the scoreline you’d think this was a one sided contest, well in a way it was, there were two differences however, Westfields put their chances away whilst Wood didn’t and Wood didn’t have a Sirdic Grant to terrorise the opposition defence.

Just like the League game both sides immediately settled into playing football but it wasn’t until 12 minutes that there was a shot on target.  Wood pressure on the right of the box saw Grant Beckett win the ball and lay it back to Harry Harris 30 yards out, his low drive well held to his left by keeper Keiron Blackburn.

Three minutes later a Wood right wing move broke down, Sam Plane played the ball forward wide left, the ball was mis-read by a defender putting Aidan Thomas clear, he raced to the edge of the box, squared the ball into the centre, Richard Greaves firing into the roof of the net.  A minute later Wood couldn’t get the ball clear and Sirdic Grant fired just wide.

On 21 minutes Nick Wright raced into the right of the home box, his ball inside was collected at pace by Ricardo Ricketts who laid the ball back to Karl Edwards, his first time effort deflected into the side netting.

Two minutes later Plane intercepted a crossfield ball, ran clear wide left, played the ball into the near post, Grant losing his marker and flicking the ball across keeper Andy Hughes and into the right hand corner of the net. Three minutes later a ball left of centre found Greaves 40 yards out, who seeing Hughes off his line hit a lob just over the right hand angle.

Wright ran through the centre three minutes later, his low drive deflected left to Lewis Taylor Boyce to hit a first time cross shot inches over the far angle.  It was on 34 minutes that Wood found out it wasn’t going to be their day, Wright charged into the right of the box, his powerful low drive was pushed away at full stretch by Blackburn, the ball was unceremoniously fired down the left by Plane to find Thomas, who raced into the left of the box and calmly slotted the ball past Hughes as the keeper raced to meet him. Four minutes later Ricketts was on the end of a neat right wing move, his shot was charged down, the ball fell to Harris, his first time screamer bravely blocked by skipper Phil Glover.  Then right on half time Craig Deakin crossed from the right to beyond the far post, Harris made space and curled a shot over the far angle.

Two minutes into the second half Grant fired a chance high over but it was all over on 51 minutes.  Grant played the ball into the left of the box, Thomas turned and fired in a cross shot that deflected off the back of a defender and flew past Hughes into the net. Four minutes later Wright raced into the right of the box, his low cross found Beckett who cleverly turned back inside, his low drive blocked.  Straight to the other end, Grant played a quick-fire one-two with Greaves in the centre of the box before releasing Nick Harrhy into the right to calmly fire home number five. On 64 minutes Craig Jones raced onto a ball inside from Grant wide right, he was caught by a late challenge from Shawn Boothe who picked up his second. yellow and left the field. Six minutes later Grant was put through into the centre of the box, Hughes saving bravely at his feet.

On 77 minutes Grant raced clear from halfway into the left of the box, he laid the ball square to Harrhy who fired a first time effort inches wide.

A minute later Wood substitute Romano Graham raced into the right of the home box, going through one challenge and firing over the far angle.  On 84 minutes second substitute Josh Mansell crossed from wide right to the far post Ben Birch powering a header just over.

Three minutes later Grant again carved open the left of the Wood defence, went past Hughes, his cross shot put behind by Beckett.  From the corner Kane Kahaki headed the ball across goal and Harrhy headed home number six at the far post.

On 90 minutes Wood pressure on the left of the box saw three shots charged down, Deakin collecting the loose ball, his fierce low drive bringing a full length save from Blackburn.

Grant had the last word racing clear wide left and finding Dan Polan to turn inside his marker and fire in a low cross shot that Hughes half stopped and Deakin cleared off the line.

Westfields were clinical, Wood couldn’t buy a goal this afternoon, and as the cheeky chappie wrote in my notebook after the game, ‘We miss Joey Butlin’, I’ve got to agree.

Bill Shaw.

The Teams:

Westfields – Blackburn, Sauntson, Plane, Glover (captain), Kahaki, Bonella, Jones, Thomas, Greaves, Harrhy, Grant, Polan, Febery, S. Gwynne, Miller, M. Gwynne.

Walsall Wood – Hughes, Deakin, Hayles, Boothe, Birch, Beckett, Ricketts, Harris (captain), Edwards, Wright, Taylor Boyce, Adams, Mansell, Taylor, Graham, Butlin.

As ever, thanks to Bill for the report – always appreciated, and my commiserations to the team and fans. Keep gwarnin, for The Good of the Wood!

Walsall Wood Saints need your votes!

untitled-9

There’s a large patch of dormant land to the left of the stadium (in this picture) which could be put to good use. Please help with your votes! Imagery from the remarkable Apple Maps.

Alex Turner from Walsall Wood (formerly Shire Oak) Saints Football Club – who are now partnered with Walsall Wood Football FC at Oak Park – has been in touch to ask readers if they’d take a little time out to register and cast votes for their bid for a slice of the Aviva Community Fund, to help improve the facilities for the club and for kids in Walsall Wood.

Registering on the site is quick and easy and you get ten votes which you can use to support the bid. Check it out here at this link.

I’ll let Alex explain what they’re proposing:

Hi all, just wondering if the blog readers could help a local football club – Walsall Wood FC.

We have recently placed a bid to upgrade the facilities available at Walsall Wood FC, not only for our teams but also the local community. We aim to re-grass a section of wasteland behind the main stand to allow a variety of sports activities all year round, and refurbish two old containers to use as a youth club.

Our main aim is to provide the local youngsters with somewhere to go and something to do on a daily basis.

All of us at the club see this as a massive step forward in the future of our community. With cut backs in various activity centres this will provide a much needed venue for everyone.

We have to make this to work for the good of the wood!

Please register here and cast your votes.

With the closure of local youth clubs and centres, this could be a real asset for Walsall Wood and make use of otherwise dormant land, and I think it’s a great project. I’ve voted and I implore readers to do so, too.

Please help The Saints, and if you’re interested in the team itself – or you have a footy mad youngster who might be – check out their Facebook page here.

Best of luck everyone – for the good off The Wood!

Car smashes through garage in early morning Brownhills crash

Pictures posted on twitter by West Midlands Fire Service @aldridgefire

In the early morning today (Saturday, 22nd October 2016) residents in Kingfisher Close, on the Watermead Estate, Brownhills were awoken by a car leaving the road and smashing through the wall of their garage.

West Midlands Fire Service personnel based at Aldridge attended the incident, which took place at 5:39am, and thankfully there were no casualties.

They posted the following on Twitter:

Update, 1:15pm – The BBC have a really odd report on this, readable in full here:

A car has been driven through the side of a garage in a suburban street, in what is perhaps the ultimate piece of poor parking.
The vehicle smashed into the brick building on Kingfisher Close, Brownhills, West Midlands, at at about 05:40 BST on Saturday.
The driver fled the scene, although police said they did not know if they were investigating what happened.
West Midlands Fire Service said no-one was in the garage at the time.
It said the garage’s structure has been “compromised” by the crash, but nobody was injured.
Police have recovered the car from the garage, and insurers for the property are assessing the damage.
The driver has not yet been traced.

‘Police said they did not know if they were investigating’ – What the hell?

If you have any further info, don’t hesitate to drop me a line – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Comments may be edited for obvious reasons.

There is also coverage at The Walsall Advertiser and the Express & Star.

My sympathies to those affected.

Huge progress being made on local canal restoration

All pictures an captions from Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust press release.

Tom Reid from the Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust has been in touch to let us know about the progress they’re making in opening up the former canal towpath as a walking route between Barracks Lane and Summerhill, aided by corporate volunteers.

If you’re unaware of the local canal restoration that’s steadily progressing this excellent blog post by Christine Howles explains more about it. The trust run regular work parties and all are very much welcome, whether you’ve a specialist skill or not!

At the moment, the volunteers are not only beavering away on the route of the lost line between Barracks Lane, Ogley Hay and The Boat restaurant, on the Lichfield Road at Summerhill, but also at several sites, including Borrowcop on the A51 at Lichfield, and other places along the route of the lost line.

To find out more, please pop along to the Lichfield and Hateherton Canal Restoration Trust website here.

Tom Reid wrote:

Corporate Volunteers Boost Lichfield Canal

Volunteers from companies as diverse as BT, Amey, E.ON and Jaguar Land Rover have been helping Lichfield’s Canal Trust to

make great strides in restoring a waterway that was abandoned in the 1950s.

In recent months canal walls creating a channel leading up to the M6 Toll aqueduct have been taking shape and a great start has been made on the kilometre-long Summerhill section of the Heritage Towpath Trail from the Oddfellows in the Boat Inn to the M6 Toll aqueduct.

Such has been the scale of progress that Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust’s Engineering Director Peter Buck is planning for the day when the wheelchair-friendly Towpath Trail will be open to the public from the Boat Inn on Walsall Road to Brownhills and boat trips will run from the Boat to the aqueduct.

The purchase of the Summerhills land was made possible by a Social Investment Business Community Award less than two years ago.

Peter said: “Before we got this piece of land we never had access to the aqueduct.

“We’ve restored  the canal culvert at Cranebrook  incorporating an access road so we can actually get cranes and construction equipment up to the M6Toll aqueduct so that we can build the guillotine lock, which will be one of the deepest, if not the deepest, in the country.

“The intention is to move our cabins early next year onto a hard-standing area by the aqueduct and that will be the construction area for the new lock and pumping station.”

Paying tribute to the volunteers, Peter said: “We’ve had fabulous cooperation from the visiting corporate groups and it’s cascading in.

“Many of the corporate volunteers come from different departments from the same organization, but they’re all saying ‘can we come?’

“We had 40 volunteers on one day and the smallest group was three but they all did a fabulous job.”

A 21-strong team of volunteers from the Waterway Recovery Group, part of the Inland Waterways Association, with two vans spent a weekend working on the canal restoration at both Darnford Park and Summerhill.

Peter said: “The Summerhill team struck the formwork to the rear concrete towpath wall over the Cranebrook culvert, cleaned, oiled the timber shutters, placed the mesh wall reinforcement, re-erected the formwork and installed props to the opposite wall which forms the canal channel over the culvert. All in one day!

“The WRG team then got stuck into completing the timber edging and stone towpath on the Heritage Towpath Trail between the culvert and the M6Toll aqueduct. Not having an excavator to load stone into our six tonne dumper did not deter our hard working WRG guests, they just loaded the dumper by hand with shovels!

“And at Darnford Park the WRG Team took control of the LHCRT excavators and dumpers and set about forming the base of the central environmental mound alongside the A38. After a good deal of scrub bashing a start was made to forming the upper canal basin and the excavated material was moved by the dumpers to form the base to the central environmental mound along the noisy A38.”

While the corporate groups have been coming and going, the Trust’s own Green Team have been steadily laying the unkempt hawthorn hedge and interplanting native saplings along the kilometer-long Summerhills section.

Meanwhile, the work of the Trust’s regular volunteers on the Tamworth Road site mean that the day when Pound 27 is in water is coming closer.

The clay base is complete in the winding hole by the A38, thanks to the loan of a 13-tonne JCB from Chase Civil Engineering which was used to place and compact the puddling  clay.

Stop planks have been installed at the narrows and more clay has been laid along the base of the towpath wall, while Geomesh has been stitched into and soil placed to the off side concreted canal bank batter to enable plants to establish and wildlife to flourish along the canal margins

The final stage before rewatering is the installation of a penstock, a gate valve which will allow the control of water through the weir at a rate acceptable to the Environment Agency and into the adjacent Darnford Brook.

Woodmen slain by keener Heanor

A warm welcome was given by Heanor FC to the visiting Wood supporters

A warm welcome was given by Heanor FC to the visiting Wood supporters

Last Wednesday (19th October 2016) Walsall Wood travelled to Heanor Town and sadly, came away soundly beaten following yet another injury.

It’s not going so well for the Woodmen this season. Bill Shaw was at the match, and doesn’t mince his words:

Hiya Bob,

The injury list continues to grow, we were playing well last night with yet another patched up side, but losing Drew Aiton at half time to a nasty looking knee injury was a body blow, from which we never recovered and Heanor totally dominated from then on.

Don’t write us off at Westfield on Saturday, but I for one wouldn’t put my mortgage money on us.

We’ll really be glad to see the end of October but we still have Lye Town at home on Saturday 29th, oh happy days.

Heanor Town 3 v 1 Walsall Wood

This was certainly a game of two halves, with Wood the better side in the first and then after losing Drew Aiton at half time finding themselves almost unable to get out of their own half in the second, as Town gave them a real battering.

After only four minutes Lewis Taylor Boyce on the Wood right crossed to the near post, debutant Richard Gregory seeing his first time effort saved by the legs of keeper Joe McCormack.  Two minutes later Steven Hayles played a ball forward that was flicked through the home defence by Gregory, McCormack out bravely to save at the feet of Drew Aiton.  On 11 minutes a long ball out of defence by Shawn Boothe was passed back by a defender, McCormack having to race from his area to kick clear from Gregory.

A minute later Town nearly went ahead, Nathan Benger crossed from wide right, Chris Smiths diving header cleared off the line.

On 19 minutes a right wing free kick was delivered to the near post, Ben Birch forcing the ball home to put Wood deservedly ahead.

Four minutes later Alex Brown threaded a ball into the Wood box, keeper Andy Hughes saving bravely at the feet of Benger.  A minute later Benger got clear wide right, his cross too hard for Elliott Reeves who could only flick the ball wide of the far post.  Three minutes later Benger again raced down the right, his ball inside hit first time but blocked by Boothe.

29 minutes a lovely ball by Lewis Taylor Boyce into the right of the box put Aiton in on goal to roll a cross shot narrowly wide.  Three minutes later a suicidal roll out by McCormack was intercepted by Nick Wright on the left of the box, his square ball right found Gregory, his first time effort blocked by a very relieved keeper.

On 36 minutes Reeves crossed from the right to pick out Benger, his goalbound effort kept out by Birch and keeper Hughes.  On 41 minutes Dominic Wilkinson ran onto a ball into the right of the box and went down under a mistimed challenge. Benger firing home the resultant penalty.

Wood had the last word, Aiton won the ball on the right of the box and fed Harry Harris who set up Gregory to hit a first time low drive that a flying McCormack pushed round his left hand post.

For the first 25 minutes of the second half apart from a 40 yard effort by Harris that just missed the right angle it was constant Town pressure but they couldn’t break down a hard working defence, then on 70 minutes Benger collected a ball forward from a left wing throw, cleverly played in Reeves into the right of the box and he hammered the ball home.

Six minutes later a rare Wood excursion over halfway saw Lee Parsons go on a powerful left wing run before cutting inside and finding Gregory, his low drive half blocked giving McCormack an easy near post save.

Town went back on the attack from this point and made certain of the 3 points when on 86 minutes a free kick on the edge of the D was fired home by Benger.

The loss of Drew Aiton (Woods leading scorer) was pivotal, but Town really gave them a second half working over and in the end deserved the three points.

Wood face Westfields on Saturday with a horrendous injury list, a time for someone or two to step up and become an unlikely hero.

Bill Shaw.

The Teams:

Heanor Town – McCormack, Marriott, Seale, Smith (captain), Hall, Whitmore, Wilkinson, Brown, Benger, reeves, Layton, Conway, Naylor, Daley, Power.

Walsall Wood – Hughes, Ricketts, Hayles, Boothe, Birch, Deakin, Wright, Harris (captain), Gregory, Aiton, Taylor Boyce, Parsons, Beckett, Mansell, Edwards, Taylor.

Walsall Wood are a good team and an excellent, community-spirited club. They need our support – please do attend their games if you can.

As ever, thanks to Bill for the report – always appreciated – for The Good of the Wood!

Why not bring the kids for some Halloween fun?

Friend of the blog Jamie Bailey has been in touch to ask if I’d give the Catshill Community Association Halloween children’s party event a plug – it takes place on Saturday 29th October 2016, at the Catshill Community Centre, Catshill Road, Brownhills, near Millfield School.

It’s running from 4-6pm, and only £1.50 for kids, and tickets can be purchased from Amanda on 01543 361958.

Fancy a cuppa with a copper?

13736613184_f8b6c1cde1_b

Whatever happened to the laughing policeman? Image from West Midlands Police.

Area Manager Laura Terry has asked me if I’d give a plug her ‘Cuppa with a Copper’ event taking place on Saturday, 22nd October at the Pelsall Village Centre from 11am to 1pm – at which you can informally meet members of the local policing and neighbourhood watch teams and discuss matters that concern you.

In the wake of recent crime and ASB issues locally, this could be a very good opportunity to take up the problems you may be experiencing with the local coppers and find out what they’re doing to help.

Although this event is in Pelsall, Laura is hopeful a session can also be organised for Brownhills once some issues have been ironed out.

Laura wrote:

Area Partnerships in conjunction with West Midlands Police have arranged a drop in session, to give you the opportunity to meet your Local Neighbourhood Team Police officer and Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator for the Pelsall Area.

‘Cuppa with a Copper’ will be held on Saturday 22nd October 2016, between 11am and 1pm at Pelsall Village Centre, in the foyer of the Library, High Street, Pelsall, WS3 4LX. Light refreshments will be provided, and a variety of community safety information will be available.

This session will run on a drop in basis – there is no need to pre-book or reserve a space, it will give you an opportunity to chat to your local Police and Neighbourhood Watch, as well as gathering some useful information about keeping yourselves and your property safe as the darker nights approach.

Please note; Reports of crime and ASB should be made using the usual routes. If you have an ongoing policing issue affecting you or your area, a report should be made to the Neighbourhood Police team via calling 101. If your problem is an emergency, an immediate call to 999 would be appropriate.

We look forward to seeing you.

Raising damp

Untitled 9

These huts, in all probability, were not a Prisoner of War camp. Imagery from Apple Maps.

The question of Prisoner of War camps periodically arises here, and the subject, hugely illuminated by Peter ‘Pedro’ Cutler, still seems shrouded in mystery and folklore.

There is a common belief, seemingly groundless, that Italian POWs were stationed near Walsall on the Mellish Road and even might even have worked on road gangs during the war, but I can find little hard evidence.

In the course of recent discussions, we think a reader mentioned POWs in Sutton Park, but we’ve been unable to find the comment – at the weekend, Peter found the clipping below from the Birmingham Gazette of August, 1940, which helps light things up a bit.

He. said:

Hi Bob,

We have had a few articles on POWs and the sittings of the Camps. I remember that a reader, possibly Linda Mason mentioned Sutton Park.

My aunt also maintained that there was a Camp there, but until now I could not find much info.

Perhaps the cutting from the Birmingham Gazette of August 1940 will answer a few questions!

Peter

Cheers for that Peter – so they were internees, not POWs – little by little things become clearer.

Peter similarly helped with the question of wartime POWs around Stonnall, and his researches didn’t find a Staffordshire camp nearby; but that’s not necessarily conclusive as one can see in the article.

Anything you can offer on this subject at all is welcome: comment here please or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Get mysterious and spooky with Brownhills finest!

bmtc-af-artwork

I’m sure I’ve seen Morticia in Tesco at Brownhills…

Old pal of the blog and top local musical whizz Jamie Norgrove contacted me from Brownhills Musical Theatre Company last to ask if I’d plug their latest show – The Addams Family – which looks to be a real gem.

The show is running from 2nd-5th November 2015 at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Cannock, including a Saturday Matinee on the 5yh. What better show for a post-Halloween treat?

Jamie wrote:

‘They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky’! The Broadway musical sensation The Addams Family is on stage at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Cannock from 2nd to 5th November.  Brought to you by the multi-award winning Brownhills Musical Theatre Company, ‘The Addams Family’ is the creepiest, kookiest night out for all the family! This is THE best Halloween musical that brings the beloved and bizarre first family of comedy to life.

From the creators of the ‘Jersey Boys’ Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice and Drama Desk Award-winning composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa, the frightfully delightful world of Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Grandma, Wednesday, Pugsley and Lurch come to spectacular life in this all new story, based on the characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams. The magnificently morbid family is put to the test when Wednesday announces her intention to marry, her prospective in-laws come to dinner, her ancestors can’t get back to ‘the other side’ and Gomez risks sleeping on the couch – all this hurling them into a night that will change their lives forever.

Will love triumph? Was Napoleon right for Josephine? Will Uncle Fester ever get a diagnosis for his rash?  Directed by Jamie Norgrove, with Musical Direction by Ian Room and Choreography by Michele Windsor this promises to be a night at the theatre that’s anything but ‘normal’, so come see for yourself!

If you’d like tickets please call our Ticket Sectetary: 01785 715368 or visit the PCS Tickets online box office.

Thanks!
Jamie

What a lovely pear!

tumblr_ntm5aolekh1qib2vgo4_1280

The pears at Clayhanger this year really suffered for a late frost.

Reader Martin Dingle has been in touch with a real curiosity that’s made me wonder – and with autumn now well upon our shoulders, I think this is an interesting prompt for childhood and other memories of the season – of fruit picking, gathering and scrumping, and other natural treats that are found by the wayside.

In the course of keeping my 365daysofbiking journal, I’ve found many fruit tress growing wild, feral or in gardens across the area – they are far more common than one might expect and locally, pears grow wild on the banks of the new pond at Clayhanger and near Little Aston Forge, near Footherley.

I’d be interested in any reader contributions on this, or other related matters – what do you remember? Please comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com – thanks to Martin for a really interesting curiosity.

Hi Bob,

Have you ever heard of these or do you remember them from your past? I have an old farmhouse in Burntwood with what looks like a tiny pear tree in the front garden. As soon as my grandfather saw it he was overjoyed and said they were ‘Tettenhall pears’… he grew up in Clayhanger and fondly remembers scrumping these tiny pears from a garden near to the canal – presumably somewhere near ‘The Anchor’ pub? Just wondered if you had any recollection of such things in the Brownhills area?

14550821_10157638925410094_62911375_o

Pears are one of my favourite fruits. Image kindly supplied by Martin Dingle.

I have done a bit of research on these trees and they are supposedly now very rare, especially this far east of Tettenhall (Wolverhampton) itself. There is a known expert on such things who has recently confirmed our tree to be of the rare Tettenhall variety, going by the name of Paul Hand.

Tettenhall Dick is back from the brink – Birmingham Mail

THE future is no longer looking pear-shaped for Britain’s rarest fruit – Tettenhall Dick is back from the brink. Fruit fan Paul Hand has managed to save the small …

‘There is a variety of pear known as ‘Tettenhall Dick’, named after Tettenhall, originally found in the hamlet of Perton and dating to earlier than the 18th century. These small, dry pears are traditionally used for the making of perry. The Bees & Trees charity began a scheme to plant 2,000 Tettenhall Dick trees across the Midlands in a bid to save them, as very few of them existed any more. These trees were grafted from existing Tettenhall Dick trees and the scheme has proven to be a success with trees being planted in a variety of different locations. The variety is now part of the National Fruit Collection at Brodale.

Not too much info online about these, but interesting to me at least – perhaps some of your readers may know more?

I cooked some of ours this season and they are amazing as dessert pears, so now I know what they are I shall continue to do so. There are also links to Perry making (in Perry Barr!) so I might look into that also.

Cheers,
Martin

Woodmen cut down by Sphinx, but their generosity stands tall

Images and captions kindly supplied by David Evans

Walsall Wood FC were at home to Coventry Sphinx yesterday afternoon (Saturday, 15th October 2016), and suffered somewhat of a drubbing at the hands of the Coventry visitors.

Before the report, though, it’s worth noting that there was a bucket passed around yesterday for Walsall Wood amputee Graham, who had his wheelchair stolen earlier in the week – and the grand total of £100 was raised.

Bill Shaw said of the collection:

just a line to let you know that we had a collection at the game against Coventry Sphinx today and raised £100.00.

The donation from William Shaw is the money from this collection.

Just proving that there are some decent people that use Oak Park.

There’s never been any doubt that there are fine people at Walsall Wood FC – thanks for your wonderful generosity folks, really is appreciated. We’re all bowled over with the kind response of Walsall Wood and the wider community. Great stuff.

Meanwhile, back to the football: Bill Shaw has submitted an excellent match report, in which he doesn’t mince his words, so assume brace position…

Hiya Bob,

A struggle against a mediocre side Wood should have had no problem in beating comfortably. This division is very unforgiving, there are no easy games, if you aren’t at your best you will struggle, and at present Wood aren’t remotely near their best.

Hard work ahead for management and players, no easy fix I’m afraid.

Walsall Wood 1 v 3 Coventry Sphinx

Wood turned in a lacklustre display, and got what they deserved – nothing, and lost to what can only be described as a mediocre Coventry Sphinx side.

It started well for Wood, after only 2 minutes Drew Aiton won a left wing corner, the ball was pushed out by keeper Scott Dutton, Anthony Juxon’s header comfortably saved. A minute later Lewis Taylor Boyce was strong on the left of the box, raced into the area only to be stopped by a superb challenge from Liam Cairns.  Four minutes gone Louis Harris cut inside from wide right, played the ball to Aiton who set up Karl Edwards to hit a fist time low drive that brought a full length save from Sutton.

Ironically Sphinx should have scored in their first attack on six minutes, James Towers collected a ball at pace wide left, he ran on and crossed to the far post Reece Blackmore firing over from close range when it looked easier to score.

Back came Wood and two minutes later Taylor Boyce ran through the middle just right of centre, he found Edwards left of the box, his touch inside was hit first time wide by Louis Harris.

On 11 minutes a Sphinx left wing free kick was headed downwards by Towers, Wood debutant keeper Lee Payne saving low to his right.  A minute later it was Towers racing onto a long ball forward wide right, cutting inside and hitting a low near post drive that was well held by Payne.

Back to the other end, Craig Deakin crossed from wide left to find Harry Harris who sidestepped a challenge, saw his low drive half blocked, keeper Dutton down bravely at Aiton’s feet.

After a more sedate passage of play Sphinx went in front on 26 minutes, a right wing corner pinged around the box in a bout of head tennis before dropping at the feet of Aron Wint at the far post to score from close range. Five minutes later Towers again got clear wide left, played the ball inside to Luke Downes who went across the face of the box and fired inches wide of the right hand post.  A break out of defence on 34 minutes saw Downes play the ball across the face of the box to pick up Cairns who was fouled.  He took the free kick himself but fired it wide.

Wood struggled to make any impact at the start of the second half and it was the visitors who dictated play.  On 50 minutes Towers powered into the box from wide right only to be stopped by a superb challenge from Shawn Bothe. Eight minutes later a strong right wing run by Scott Lower saw him cross to the far post, Luke Adams heading behind to deny Towers. With 64 minutes gone Blackmore swung in a left wing corner that was forced home from close range by Darren Eggleton at the far post.

Wood huffed and puffed but couldn’t get back into the game until on 76 minutes a long ball forward found substitute Leon Taylor who released Aiton into the right of the box, his driven rising cross handled by a defender, a harsh penalty given.  Aiton’s spot kick pushed onto his left hand post by a flying Dutton.

It was sewn up on 83 minutes, Harry Harris was dispossessed on halfway by Ryan Harkin who ran on before releasing Jimmy Holton into the box to calmly slot the ball past a stranded keeper.

On 86 minutes Louis Harris went on a crossfield right to left run, he rode three tackles before being brought down on the left of the box.  He took the free kick himself firing into the top right hand corner, Dutton finally beaten.

Sphinx held out to take all three points, stifling any chance of a late comeback.

Wood’s defeat drops them down to 10th and their season looks in danger of unravelling as they try to find a settled winning line up. It’s a crunch week with trips to Heanor Town on Wednesday followed by the FA Vase trip to Westfields next Saturday.

The community rallies around to help Graham – a message of thanks

The dreadful state Graham’s chair was found in. Image kindly supplied by Adrian Handley.

Last week there was an outpouring of justifiable shock and outrage when Holly Lane amputee Graham had his wheelchair stolen from outside of his bungalow presumably by a group of local youths, only to be found later near the skate park at Oak Park, trashed beyond repair.

Well, a Gofundme appeal was started, local journalists became involved, the BBC ran a couple of articles on Radio WM and a really negative, horrible thing was turned around into something much more positive.

In a very short time indeed, the fundraising total of £700 for a replacement chair was exceeded, and I would personally like to thank all who donated, but I’d like to give a shoutout and warm thanks to the blog readers who donated, and a couple in particular who stunned us all.

However, is wasn’t just those who could donate; many others did what they could by sharing and publicising the appeal, which is hugely valuable in itself. Thanks to you all.

This quiet display of generosity, compassion, felicity and pure human warmth has shocked and pleased both myself, and Adrian Handley, Graham’s freind, who raised the alarm.

Adrian posted the following message on Facebook this afternoon – you can see the original post here.

Now we are getting back to some kind of normality I thought it was time that I posted and update on Graham’s story.

Following the theft and finding the destroyed chair on Wednesday night, we were all feeling pretty low, despite the community response we had received in trying to find the chair, the damage was done and we were all gutted.

On Thursday we were given a price of £700 for a direct replacement chair and following numerous offers of crowd funding accepted the offer from Rachel Lockett to set up a fundraising page.

The coverage from Brownhills Bob brought the story to the attention of BBC WM, and in under 24 hours we had exceeded the target.

There was a couple of week’s wait to get the chair, so today we set off calling and visiting wheelchair specialists to see what we can do more quickly.

The staff at the shop we visited in Burton this afternoon were incredible and were able to supply us with a suitable wheelchair to take away today. They also managed to do this for less than we had previously been quoted, so there is a bit of money left over.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be looking to install some kind of locking post, to ensure the wheelchair can never be stolen again.

If as I expect we still have some money left, then we will be looking to donate it to a charity or another good cause. I will be looking for opinions on what best to do once I know exactly what we have left.

Graham would like to express his gratitude for the way so many people have come together and turned a negative into a positive. This new wheelchair will mean he can get around his bungalow to do the simplest things that were not possible, or at least very difficult for the last few days.

I would like to sign off for now by repeating my thanks to every person who has shared the appeal, donated and provided support in so many ways.

Thanks to Adrian for the kind words, and very thoughtful and eloquent post. You readers – the community – have done us all proud. We can be very despondent when awful things happen, but stories like this do show that despite the bad apples all communities contain, we do have a great deal of decent folk here ready to help in a crisis.

There is a point I will make, though: Graham left his chair, as many disabled folk do, on his drive after getting into his car and driving off – the problem of what you do with the chair in such instances where you’re alone is common to many wheelchair users.

Does anyone have any practical solutions to this problem? A locking post seems a good idea, but what if it’s raining? Can’t be much fun getting into a wet chair. Suggestions or ideas welcome, please.

Also, remember that the police are still investigating so if you know who the thieves were, or if you saw anything at all, please do contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
