A Ferrie on the cut – but who with, and where?
I love how the blog allows stories to unfold slowly, gradually adding more and more information and evidence as time passes; and so it is with the story of the Charles Ferrie narrowboat, which Ralph Ferrie donated to Brownhills Youth Club in 1962, and was named in memory of his father.

2016 Brownhills Canalside Festival today!
I note the creative advertising modification team have been out again this year, getting Brownhills Canal Festival noticed on social media – and any publicity is good, as the image above has been shared hundreds of times now since it was posted last week on Facebook by old friend of the blog Nathan Whittaker.

The Lichfield & Hatherton need your vote!
Christine Howles from the Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust has contacted me to tell me she’s after your vote – no, she’s not standing for election, but the Trust is applying for a community grant and could really do with readers voting for them in the next week or so.

It’s a bum rap – but there’s no such thing as bad publicity
A delightful bit of urban mischief in Brownhills has gone semi-viral on local social media – Oh dear me, the jokes write themselves.

Summer’s first breath
We’ve had a really fine few days, and I really feel now that summer is on her throne – the leaves are all fully out now, the whites and yellows of spring are turning to the reds and purples of summer, and nature and the landscape is resplendent in the multi-colured jacket the sun provides.

The first superhighway
Here’s a lovely film, spotted by twitter friend Kris Davies and posted on Twitter last night – It’s a documentary film covering a the journey of a cargo load by narrowboat on the Grand Union Canal from London to Birmingham in the 1930s.

Pictures from the 2012 Brownhills Canal Festival
As I do every year, today I visited Brownhills Canal Festival. Arriving at about 12:30pm, it was clearly a better executed event than the 2011 incarnation, but sadly, the weather was rather unkind, with alternating periods of sunshine and very … Continue reading →
