The Woodmen fell Coppice residents

Photos from the wonderful Russell Smith of The-Wood.tv.

On Saturday afternoon (18th November 2017), Walsall Wood FC took the short stroll up the road to Five Ways at Heath Hayes to comfortably beat Heath Hayes, continuing the Woodmen’s somewhat astonishing performance so far this season.

Bill Shaw submitted the following match report, and is cautious about the future:

Hiya Bob,

Another three points and a win that takes us back to the top on goal difference, still with three games in hand.  It’s the big test so far when we visit Atherstone, so keep the faith everyone, this is a real trial for the lads.

Heath Hayes 2 v 5 Walsall Wood

Two goals for the home side in the last 12 minutes made the scoreline rather flattering for the hosts who never looked more than second best as the Wood juggernaut reached top spot, still with three games in hand over deposed leaders Studley.

It took Wood just eight minutes to go ahead, great approach play opening up the defence before Paul Sullivan slipped the ball past subsequent man of the match, former Wood keeper Mark Wiggins. Eight minutes later great awareness from Craig Deakin as he raced into the left of the box saw him set up Andrew Westwood to fire in number two. Wood were now threatening to run riot, Deakin and Peter Till won a corner on the left, the flag kick powered inches too high off the head of Sam Agar.  The keeper then made a superb full length save to deny a Sullivan rising drive into the top corner. He was beaten a few minutes later by a clever lob from Agar that was cleared off the line.

Yes more great match footage from the very professional Russell Smith of The_Wood.tv

Just to remind Wood there was another team involved a quick counter attack saw Regan Smith fire an effort just wide.

Back came Wood, Till racing into the box and causing panic but the ball was scrambled clear. Right on the stroke of half time Agar deservedly tucked home Woods third.

It was straight back onto the attack for Wood at the start of the second half, Westwood working a sharp one-two with Agar only to fire over. Till then crossed from wide left, Agar only just off target with an acrobatic scissor kick. On 67 minutes Sullivan popped up in the box, his shot beat Wiggins, bounced off the post and Westwood pounced to make it four. Till fired a rising drive just over as Wood again looked ominous.

Against the run of play Jake Humphries pulled a goal back, the first conceded in more than 6 hours by the Wood.

Skipper Wiggins then made another superb save to deny Jordan Fitzpatrick, then on 87 minutes a determined left wing run by Till saw his cross bulleted homed from the head of Agar.

To their credit Hayes kept trying to take the game to the Wood and a minute from time Regan Smith pulled one back to give the scoreline a hint of respectability.

Another superb three points for Wood, but three of the next  four games could shape their season, Tuesday sees them in league cup action at Stourport Swifts, Saturday it’s a visit to very strong Atherstone Town for a league game. Tuesday 28th it’s home to Wednesfield Town in the Walsall Senior Cup before it’s back to Stourport on Saturday 2nd December, this time for a Third Round ound FA Vase clash.

Bill Shaw.

Thanks to Bill for the report – always appreciated. For the good of The Wood!

Postcard from the city

A remarkable bit of Brownhills Social History. Do you recognise the Avenues estate here? Click for a larger version.

I have no chance whatsoever of reading this. Help welcomed. Click for a larger version.

I’d just like to share these Brownhills postcard images, one of which is for sale on eBay currently, and two others which were shared by a reader who wishes to remain anonymous a couple of weeks ago.

Thee most remarkable is the Garden City postcard, which was the name first given to the Avenues Estate on Co-op Corner, where the Ogley/Chase Road crosses the Lichfield Road. The image and a partner on have been discussed before, but I’ve never seen a good quality scan before.

The whole Garden City thing is fascinating and was discussed in this post here. I wonder when the houses were faced with render, from the bare brick, and why? The card appears to have been postally used in 1926 to an address in Tamworth.

If you fancy this, you can see the original sale here from mafcard1 where it’s offered for just £2 with proceeds to charity – which seems like a good buy for those interested.

The remaining two cards were sent by an old pal of the blog who says he grabbed the images from eBay, but can’t remember when. Agin, they’re very good quality scans and worth posting here, despite being familiar images. That’s the clearest I’ve seen of the Norton Pool one and would be interested to see where readers think it was taken from.

Anything to add? Please do comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot

St. James Church, Ogley Hay, before the awful extension was added. Click for a larger version.

A very clear image of a rather placid-looking Norton Pool (Chasewater) with children on the shore. Note the pit chimney on the skyline. Click for a larger version.

A memorable day of joy!

Here’s another wonderful contribution from local historian John Sale, who via David Evans, has been contributing some real gems – we started with last week’s Home Guard article which provoked a great deal of discussion – well, this week it’s the 1937 Coronation Celebration Party in Walsall Wood that comes to the fore.

John Sale has allowed David to scan and share this fascinating program from the celebration held in Walsall Wood on May 12th, 1937 for the Coronation of King George VI – a real social occasion with some remarkably charming spectacles – Bladder Heading Competition, anyone? Wonder who won?

We’ve covered Coronation celebrations here before, notably in this contribution from Sir Gerald of Reece on the celebration for the Coronation of Gerge V in 1911.

The document is interesting not just for it’s insight into social mores of the time, but also in the names of those mentioned.

David Worte:

This copy of the official programme has been very kindly provided by Mr John Sale, local historian, and I would like to offer him my sincere personal thanks.

The programme contains details which, I am sure, will be of great interest to local people and others.

The Playing Field mentioned was behind KFC fast food fast food café in Lichfield Road, and Brownhills Road School, Walsall Wood, by the Football Club and many will remember the swings, roundabouts, slides and other play equipment in this field. It no longer exists. The Grand Stand was built in 1936, and it and the football club are still there.

The Mounted Gymkhana Display team and their director, Mr Southall has been mentioned in detail in Brownhills Bob’s blog.

Mr Beak owned the shop presently called Roadrunner, in Lichfield Road, and the field which extended to Brook Lane. The butcher’s shop also had its own abattoir.

The Radio Gram selection was offered by Mr Yeomans, whose radio, cycle repair, shop was in Lichfield Road near to the Streets Corner junction, by the bus lay by. He would re-charge radio accumulators!

The Church Hall was in Brookland Road at the corner with Brook Lane but was demolished some years ago.

The PM Schoolrooms is the Primitive Methodist Sunday School building at the Methodist Church, near to the football ground, and is still in existence.

David, October 2017

My thanks to John Sale and of course to David Evans for a remarkable piece of local history – I’m sure readers will want to comment, please do – either on this post or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Walsall Wood Under 18s win against Sutton for first home victory!

Walsall Wood Under 18s scored their first home win in the week!

Simon Evans via Walsall Wood Under 18s Manager Dylan Somel sent a great report from last week’s Under 18s first home win against Sutton Under 18s which took place on Tuesday 14th November 2017.

It was a great match which the Wood lads won two goals to one.

Worth noting the Wood Under 18s play again tomorrow morning (Sunday 19th November) with a friendly against WFC u16s:

The match is at Sir Thomas More School and kicks off at 11am.

For future reference, it’s worth following along with mach commentaries on Twatter: Usually one of the club official account @WalsallWoodFC here, or @Wood18s here or Simon Evans himself @Sy968 here are doing excellent coverage during matches. Thanks, chaps!

Simon wrote:

Wood u18s 2 v 1 Sutton u18s

Sutton started brightly, after two mins a swift Sutton attack saw the Wood keeper Joe Storey make a smart save, Wood countered, the cross being just too long for the on coming striker and the keeper collected. After six mins A. Toddington had a shot just over the bar.

After 14 mins Wood took the lead through Keiron Berry, a smart finish. Wood pressed for the second goal, Berry again going close, the Sutton keeper and defender blocking.

Sutton then had a spell of pressure, a  long range effort was saved well by the Wood keeper.

Some good interplay between the Wood strikers saw Woods Abdul Rahman shoot straight at the keeper. The last action of the first half saw the Sutton striker again having a long range effort which was just over the bar.

Half time: 1-0 Wood

The second half started and Wood were back on the attack. The second Wood goal came after 48 mins, Easthope scoring after a through ball.

Suttons response was swift, a counter attack saw the Sutton strikers fierce shot forced the Wood keeper to  make a fine save. Sutton were pressing, but some fine defending kept them out. Wood threatened to get a third goal, but some fine defending from Sutton defenders prevented that.

After 92 mins following some sustained Sutton pressure, Suttons goalkeeper had a header cleared off the line following a corner. Sutton attacked again, forcing another corner. Again the keeper went up, the ball was bundled into the Wood net 2-1

Wood kicked off, but the ref then blew for FT . Wood winning 2-1

Thanks to Simon for a great report, much appreciated – for The Good of the Wood!

Also, the team are looking for players, and applications are open – see the foot of this post!

Team manager, Dylan Somel wrote:

This year Walsall Wood Football Club are implementing youth side, who will play in the Midland Floodlit League. This has been made possible with the support from the youth section at the club and also George and Justin, who have made a great platform for the lads to succeed under the Wood banner.

Walsall Wood Under 18s Football Team need you!

We train Thursdays 6:30-8pm at Oak Park Active Living Centre

Please could you include special thanks to our Home Kit Sponsor Guy’s Dental based in Lichfield and our trainingwear sponsor Stonnall Fish Bar.. Thanks so much.

Woodmen exterminate Badgers

Brocton are old Wood adversaries. Image from Pitch Side Stories.

Last Tuesday evening saw Walsall Wood FC travel to Brocton FC at Stafford – and once again, the Wood emerged with a stunning score sheet that’s making many question the nature of the water in Walsall Wood at the moment.

Bill Shaw was there, and wrote:

Hi Bob,

Another three points with a second half rout of the Badgers. Sad to see Adam Wood stretchered off, we all hope it’s not as bad as it looks Woody, good luck mate.

The six goals took Woods tally to 18 in the last three games, eight of which have come from Paul Sullivan as he makes up for lost time after his month out with injury.

In the league cup we face an away trip to Stourport Swifts, guess who we face in Round Three of the FA Vase? Yes Swifts away on December 2nd.

The last Saturday in November sees us face another big test when we visit Atherstone Town, we’ve beaten them twice at the Wood but both games were close.

Bill Shaw (Retired.)

P.S. This is a far easier way of reporting games.

Brocton 0 v 6 Walsall Wood

Not something I’m used to doing, but in the words of Boldmere legend Alan Parsons, ‘If you can use something, do so.’  So here’s my amended version of Tuesday night’s report on the Brocton game.

This was certainly a game of two halves, the Badgers held the high flying visitors to no goals in a competitive first half but they couldn’t live with the Wood as a Paul Sullivan inspired side ran riot in the second 45 minutes.

There were plenty of glimpses of Woods abilities in the first half but Brocton were dangerous on the counter attack with Paul McMahon a constant threat. Dan Lomas as always was prominent but the best chance on 30 minutes saw McMahon set up Joe Hartshorne but the speedy reaction of the Wood defenders saw his effort smothered.

The second half was a different story altogether, just three minutes in and a slightly mistimed tackle in the box handed Wood a penalty – Sullivan 1-0.  If that was harsh on the Badgers the understandable but naïve attempt to then go to all-out attack was a disaster. On 55 minutes Sullivan collected a ball on the edge of the box, ran on and his superbly controlled lob gave the advancing Adam Jenkins no chance. The custodian was powerless two minutes later when Sullivan completed a 12 minute hat-trick as he rounded the keeper and chipped home. On 67 minutes after a concerted bout of pressure the ball found it’s way out to Jordan Fitzpatrick on the left of the box and his low drive flew into the bottom left hand corner. On 80 minutes a defensive mix up let in Peter Till who scored from close range.  We saved the best until last with a contender for goal of the season, Craig Deakin broke up an attack in his own half and powered forward to the left edge of the box before firing in a rising drive that flew past the shell shocked Jenkins to complete a second half demolition job on the Badgers.

The win takes Wood to within two points of leaders Studley with three games still in hand.

Saturday sees the Badgers visit Studley whilst Wood face a trip to free scoring Heath Hayes who have scored one goal less than Wood but have conceded 35 more, can’t see it being a goal-less draw somehow.

The Teams:

Brocton – Jenkins, Phillips, Robinson, Juxon, Wood, Wright, Lomas, Burns, P. McMahon, Hartshorne, Curtis, Devoir, Stuart, Taylor D. McMahon.

Walsall Wood – Ransome, Hayden, Deakin, Hurren, Slater, Tolley (captain), Mugisha, Westwood, Sullivan, Clarke, Fitzpatrick, Till, Butler, McFarlane, Meekin-Richards, Agar.

Thanks to Bill for the report, as ever. Onwards and upwards!

Tesco, Brownhills. Not beautiful, but it’s all ours. Image from West Midlands Police.

I must say, it’s good to see the local police making such concerted efforts to reach out to the public.

Also, if you haven’t signed up for WMNow, please do – it’s free and you can select to receive alerts on all kinds of local issues. It’s a fine thing.

Pictures and video from Brownhills and Heath Hayes 2017 Remembrance events

Pictures from Brownhills Remembrance 2017 –
Images Kindly supplied by readers and organisations as credited.

Last weekend, Saturday and Sunday 11-12th November 2017 saw the annual Remembrance weekend in the UK and I’m pleased to say Walsall Borough and South Staffordshire did themselves proud and staged a whole range of parades and events that were well supported and attended – and I was especially pleased to see the wonderful turnout and effort in Brownhills.

I’ve already covered Walsall Wood’s event in this post here.

The Brownhills parade would have not been possible without Ian Neville and the folk from the British Legion in the town working so hard to raise funds for it, and of course all who gave so generously to fund traffic management for the parade.

My apologies for being a little late with this post, it’s been a complicated one to get together this year due to the sheer number of contributors and ways media is now supplied!

If I’ve overlooked your contribution, or you’d like something added, please comment here, bend me ear on Facebook or Twitter or mail me on BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

This wonderful montage was made by the Walsall Wood Razor Under 12s Football Team from Walsall Wood FC who were at Brownhills. You can check out their Facebook page here.

Old friend of the blog Dave Cresswell posted this interesting and well executed live feed from the event. Thanks to Dave for sharing that.

There was also a lovely, touching message of thanks posted to the Facebook group from Wendy Dance, daughter of Ron Dance, president of Brownhills Royal British Legion, which said:

On behalf of my Dad, Ron Dance, President of The Royal British Legion Brownhills branch. Could I thank all those that attended the remembrance parade today? This was an amazing parade, all those that took part were a credit to the parade. My Dad would like to thank each and everyone one of you including Walsall Wood football club and the Norton bikers. My Dad is proud of you all for attending this morning. Not forgetting our thanks to all that have stopped by on our table in Tesco to buy a poppy.

Wear your poppy with pride and see you again next year

A photo of my dad in church this morning with his Presidents medal!

On the contrary Wendy and Ron, thank YOU for organising everything and serving the town so diligently.

A lovely image supplied by Wendy Dance.

I also had this selection of images from Ray Smythe at Heath Hayes and Wimblebury Parish Council whose event looks to have been spectacular. Again, my thanks to Ray who was also remarkably tolerant of my absent-minded idiocy when I was compiling the list of events.

You Ray, are a gentleman. Thanks for your help.

Ray also shared this video of the Heath Hayes parade from the Cannock Chase Drum Corps, and again, thanks for that.

Video posted on Facebook by Cannock Chase Drum Corps.

Collectors fair at Aldridge Transport Museum this Sunday

This Sunday’s fair is just the thing for transport buffs and modellers of all kinds. Image from the Museum Facebook page.

I see from the events list that Aston Manor Road Transport Museum in Aldridge have a collectors fair taking place this Sunday (19th November 2017) from 10:00am until 4:00pm, and should be just the thing for auto buffs, transport enthusiasts and petrol heads of all types.

There are stalls booked with books, memorabilia, collectorama and all sorts of transport stuff available, so there will be something for everyone, and takes place at the museum located at Shenstone Drive, Aldridge WS9 8TP- just off Northgate. Calll 01922 454761.

The Museum posted the following on their Facebook page:

The last Museum event of the year, a collectors’ fair with the transport enthusiast in mind. Lots of models, books, photographs and memorabilia to do with buses and other forms of transport. Message us if you’d like a stall, too!

We’ve got loads of tables worth of goodies!

Even if its cold and wet on the day, there will be hot food and drinks available and there will be some parts of the building that will actually be warm! So don’t let anything deter you, there will be a super selection of goods for you,

Do take advantage of the free bus service, car parking spots always at a bit of a premium around Shenstone Drive, although we always cater for those who find walking not as easy as it used to be with some spaces available on the museum site.

There’s a free half-hourly bus service to get you there from Hatherton Road in Walsall starting at 10:20am, and normal museum entrance fees apply. Check the event Facebook page for timetables of services and the latest news.

While you’re there, you can check out all the great stuff in the collection, and talk to the volunteers, who’re doing a fine job.

This is sure to be a great event – please do pop along. The collection needs the support of the public to survive, and it really is a wonderful thing.

A traditional service Brownhills can be proud of

When suffering the loss of a loved one, you really need a professional, locally based service, which is exactly what Jennifer Ashe and Son provide from their Funeral Home in Brownhills. Image supplied by John Ashe.

Hey folks, I’m always ready to give local businesses a plug here on the blog, and today I’d like to give a space to a business that’s becoming very well respected in Brownhills High Street, and yet is one many of us might not like to think about too much – Jennifer Ashe and Son are a traditional Funeral Directors owned and run as a family concern by good local people

I realise this is a service most of us don’t consider until we find ourselves in the sad position of needing it; but I feel it’s worth knowing that we have a professional, understanding and affordable Funeral Director close to hand.

I’ll let John Ashe explain:

Hello Bob

We’re a family-operated Funeral Directors in High Street, Brownhills who have now been open for 12 months. I think many people still don’t know we’re here, recently a delivery driver asked a shop in the top of the high street where we were and they’d not heard of us before and also we had a local lady appoint us to organise a funeral and again hadn’t heard about Jennifer Ashe and Son until her friend recommended us.

We are a small independent family firm owned by Jennifer and Son John, our head funeral director is Richard, we have a team of  7 with over 50 years experience between us.

There are three generations currently working in our funeral home at to ensure we deliver the high standards we are becoming known for to the families we’ve supported.

Since opening we have supported families from across the West Midlands and have also carried out funerals in Manchester & London.

When we opened we were determined not to charge huge amounts for Funerals, quite often bereaved families don’t think to check how much funeral costs are and get stung by paying for services they don’t need. Lots of undertakers don’t display their prices on their website, where as we do as we like people to have a full understanding of our low prices before they walk through the door, that way then can make their mind up before they call us or visit us.

A combination of traditional high standards and sympathetic approach means you can depend upon Jennifer Ashe and Son. Image from their website.

We operate two main funeral prices;

Our simple funeral, which includes our services, the provision of a Hearse and a Coffin is just £995 (excluding the third party fees such as cremation and ministers costs).

We don’t charge for bringing loved ones into our care, including out of hours and we also open out of hours for families to visit their loved ones when they want, I even opened up on Christmas day for one family last year, again we don’t charge for this.

We also have a special ‘Complete Package’ priced at £2750 this package covers our fees, includes a Limousine, Coffin Spray, Order of Service and other extras, the package also covers the cost of the crematorium and minister, meaning families have just one bill to deal with at such a difficult time.

We also offer pre-payment plans, allowing families to pay for their funerals in advance securing the costs at today’s prices; the money is held in trust for families until the time of need, giving them confidence their money is secure and that it can’t be touched by the funeral directors until they produce a copy of the death certificate to the board of trustees.

The fund grows with inflation meaning there should always be enough money held to cover the cost of services when they’re needed, hopefully in many years time.

Our facebook page has nothing but positive reviews from some of the families we’ve supported over the first twelve months of being open.

Our website contains lots of useful information on what to do when a loved one passes, information on the funeral packages and prices we charge and also information on the funeral pre-payment plans. http://www.jafunerals.co.uk.

We are delighted to have been included in ‘Three Best Rated®’, Three Best Rated® was created with a simple goal to find you the top 3 local businesses, professionals, restaurants and health care providers in any city. Their employees Handpick top 3 local businesses. They check business’s reviews, reputation, history, complaints, ratings, satisfaction, nearness, trust, cost, general excellence using our 50-Point Inspection. They display only businesses that are verified by their employees.

I’ve added some pictures of our funeral home and us too that you might find useful.

Can’t thank you enough for your help.

Kind regards
John Ashe

I’ll be honest here, I have no connection with this business whatsoever, but I have attended one of their funerals, and it was as professional, respectful and sympathetic as anyone would want.

I wish John and Jennifer Ashe all the very best for their business, whilst crossing my fingers  that I won’t need them just yet…

Meeting about future of Clayhanger Community Centre tonight!

Untitled 9

Clayhanger Community Centre is the former George and Dragon pub in Church Street, Clayhanger. Imagery from Apple Maps.

You’ll all know that this blog is all about community and the things that bring us all together – be it a bit of current affairs, history, discussion or appeals for help: well, Clayhanger Community Centre which closed a while back has in the past provided an excellent service to the community, and looks set to be reborn.

There is a meeting regarding this tonight (Tuesday 14th November 2017) at the Community Centre itself in Church Street, Clayhnager at 7pm sharp. All are invited.

The organisers said:

There will be a General meeting on the 14th of November at 7pm at the community centre for people who are interested in what has been happening at the community centre and plans for the future of the building.

The volunteers who work very hard indeed for nothing more than the love of their community deserve our support and respect, and I implore readers with an interest in Clayhanger to attend if they can.

Walsall Wood Remembrance Sunday 2017 pictures

Walsall Wood people of all generations come together to remember the fallen. Image Kindly supplied by David Evans.

The young David Evans yesterday (Sunday, 12th November 2017) went to his local Remembrance event in Walsall Wood and sent in a wonderful gallery of images to mark this most sombre of  days.

Following a successful effort to raise funds to support the parade, Lee Bragginton of Walsall Wood Scouts, Molly Lloyd of Walsall Wood Girls Brigade and all those who worked so hard to raise funds for and stage this event did their community proud.

Walsall Wood came out in force, as ever for the traditional Sunday Afternoon parade, a timing which I believe to be unique within the local area.

Thanks to all in the parade, and all those who attended, too.

Also doing sterling service was David, whose photo gallery I include below.

Thanks to David and all those who took part in, or went to observe Remembrance. This is what community is about.

Continuing the Remembrance theme here on the blog today, here’s a lovely bit of research into the Home Guard locally by the wonderful David Evans and John Sale.

I’m particularly glad to receive a contribution from John, as being one too the prominent and longstanding local historians whose work this blog stands upon. John’s work with Bill Mayo on books and curating their photo collections is legendary.

Here John and David answer one of the pressing local wartime questions: Just where did the Home Guard practive their shooting?

It’s worth pointing out here once more the great resource for people interested in the local home guard history: the Staffs Home Guard website – click here to visit it.

Thanks to both gentlemen for a lovely article, and if you remember anything, or have anything to say, please do. Comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

David Evans Worte:

In the immediate post-war years of my childhood, stories of the war abounded. The deadly air raids, the sirens, these tales often elaborated from reality it now turns out, but this map has recently been published in the wonderful Home Guard site, and it intrigues me.

This remarkable hand-drawn map has been discussed many times on the blog, and remains a curiosity. Image from the Staffordshire Home Guard website.

The Home Guard in Walsall Wood had its own character, and stories of F company’s route marches have passed in to local folk lore. However, the exact location of the shooting butts. in Streetly and near Stubbers Green have remained a mystery. Until now.

Mr John Sale is a well-known local historian whose works are a valuable source of accurate information and personal photos. In a friendly chat with him recently I was delighted to learn of the existence and location of one of the Home Guard shooting ranges. John told me where and when the Aldridge E company trained there. He recalled seeing the soldiers march past his home in Leighswood Road on to the canal, then along the towpath to the Wharf Canal bridge, and then to a disused mound, a heap of red ash. He described it as being a tip from a disused coalmine, and it was near the old marl holes and on the towpath side of the canal.

John mentioned the Sunday morning Home Guard shooting practices, and the Monday retrieval of spent bullets from the mound, performed by the local lads!

The now demolished Millington and York offices. Image Kindly supplied by John Sale.

The commanding officer was Lieutenant Colonel Charles Cartwright DSO, MC who lived in this large house in Leighswood Road, and seen in John’s photo. The house was later converted into the printing firm Millington and York’s offices, and was recently demolished.

The house was the headquarters of the local Company, seen here in front of one of the out- buildings at the rear of Colonel Cartwright’s house.

This outbuilding, in the back yard of Millington and York, is clearly the same low building in the group photo. Image Kindly supplied by John Sale.

This is John’s photo of the building, and his notes on it:

A Mr Arthur Wadey, formerly the trainer at Walsall Wood FC, had been a Bevan Boy, working in the local coalmine, and was also a member of the Walsall Wood Home Guard. He had won an anonymous plain leather wallet in one of the shooting competitions and treasured it. An unusual award perhaps? Well, Colonel Cartwright was a manager of a leather firm in Walsall at that time!

I would like to thank Mr John Sale for allowing me to scan and copy his photos, and for sharing his invaluable personal memories, enabling another piece of our local history to be documented and recorded.

Thank you, John.

A dreadful dawn

The Shot at Dawn sculpture at the National Memorial Arboretum. Image from Alchetron.

Since it’s Remembrance Sunday, I’ve a very sad, thought-provoking article here that was brought to my attention just yesterday by Vikki Swain, whose Great Uncle, Lance Corporal Frederick Hawthorne was one of the tragic band of soldiers executed at dawn in the Great War, now commemorated in the Shot At Dawn sculpture at the National Memorial Arboretum near Lichfield.

Frederick was a volunteer, not a coward, and like the majority of the men so executed, was pardoned in 2007. Exhausted, shellshocked and suffering the unimaginable damage inflicted by terrible battles of this most horrific war, this soldier was executed for ‘showing cowardice’. The injustice of this execution, like many others during the same conflict, has echoed down the years, and thanks to the work of historians including Richard Pursehouse and the Aldridge Great War Project, Frederick’s story could be told.

If you want to find out more about Shot at Dawn, see this article on Wikipedia here, which seems quite balanced to me.

I knew little of the incident until yesterday, when Vikki contacted me. She said:

Hello Bob,

I hope you didn’t mind me forwarding the above link. Born & bred Brownhills I thought you may be interested in my great uncles sad story.

My parents are still alive and have a memory box of Fred’s and finally found and visited his resting place .

We love your blogs and wanted to share this with you .

Kindest Regards
Vikki Swain

The article Vikki pointed me to was written by noted local journalist Mike Lockley and first published in the Sunday Mercury of 31st July 2017. I include it in full below, but the original linked article can be found here.

I’d like to thank Vikki and her family, and all the historians who worked on this story; on this most solemn of Sundays it’s a sad, dreadful reminder of the reality of war and of the way ordinary people were sucked into conflict and payed the highest price.

BRANDED COWARD

Lance Corporal Frederick Hawthorne was executed during World War One after refusing an order he considered suicidal. MIKE LOCKLEY tells his story.

FREDERICK Hawthorne was killed by firing squad for daring to bring some rationale to the madness that was World War One.

Tasked with crawling through No Man’s Land to cut the spider’s web of barbed wire, the Aldridge soldier refused, telling his commanding officer: “It’s too light. It’s bloody murder.” His death at dawn only highlights the pitiful waste of life on the Western Front’s killing fields.

In a recent Sunday Mercury article, we revealed how Lance Corporal Hawthorne had belatedly been included on the Aldridge War Memorial after being cleared of cowardice.

Now, thanks to Richard Pursehouse and Lee Dent of Great War historical group, The Chase Project, we have pieced together the jigsaw of Hawthorne’s short life – and his death at the hands of his own men.

Hawthorne was one of eight children born to coal miner Moses Hawthorn and Selina. The 1911 census describes Hawthorne as a brickyard labourer and it is known that he volunteered for action in September 1914. He joined the South Staffordshire Regiment on March 5, 1915, and was immediately thrown into the storm of shells, shrapnel and bullets.

He fought at the costly Loos attack in September 1915, and took part in the 46th Division (North Midland) failed diversionary attack at Gommecourt on the Somme on July 1, 1916.

But it was at the Somme where Hawthorne initially refused a near-suicidal mission to cut the barbed wire that laced No Man’s Land.

Eventually, he relented and left his dugout, later blaming his late return to the trenches on fellow members of the wire-cutting party.

His colleagues’ testimonies. however, did not back up that claim.

Today, Hawthorne would have been diagnosed with shell-shock. Back then, he was simply seen as possessing a yellow streak and was court martialled.

The 22-year-old appeared before that kangaroo court on July 31, 1916, to face the charge of “when on active service, misbehaving before the enemy in such a manner as to show cowardice”.

Hawthorne’s slim chance of surviving the firing squad was dimmed by his decision to conduct his own defence. The hearing descended into an almost Blackadder-style farce, with the young squaddie forced to crossexamine his own officers.

He also called colleague 2nd Lieutenant Snape as a character witness, who told the court martial that Hawthorne was “quite an efficient noncommissioned officer”.

But the defendant sealed his own fate by declining to provide any mitigation. The court’s presiding officers – Major Odling of the Middlesex Regiment, Captain Lister of Hawthorne’s own 1/5 South Stafford, a territorial force, and Lieutenant CA Ashford, 1/6 South Staffords – unanimously decided on the death sentence.

Their decision was rubber-stamped by Brigadier Williams.

What’s more, the brigadier – known to be highly suspicious of territorial soldiers – added his own statement, refuting the soldier’s claims that it was too light to cut wire.

The court papers were passed ever higher up the chain of command and there was a glimmer of hope for the doomed prisoner when 46th North Midland divisional commander Brigadier General Thwaites recommended the sentence be “commuted with suspension of sentence” because he questioned the organisation of the wirecutting operation.

But he added that such a move could damage morale among junior officers who gave evidence at Hawthorne’s trial.

“A very deep feeling amongst the officers as a whole may be engendered and the battalion will consequently become valueless,” he wrote.

The call for leniency was snubbed by Corps Commander Lieutenant General D’Oyly Snow, the grandfather of historian Dan Snow.

He stated: “The effect of the sentence being carried out would be to bring home to the whole battalion the enormity of such behaviour in the face of the enemy. An example is needed and I therefore recommend the sentence be carried out.”

Snow had famously dubbed the 46th North Midland Division as “lacking offensive spirit” during the opening day of the Somme, July 1. And when it reached the very top on August 7, Sir Douglas Haig confirmed the death sentence.

There was no possibility of an appeal and Hawthorne was executed four days later.

Thwaites’ tribute to the soldier’s bravery as he faced the firing squad only underlined the injustice of the whole sorry affair. “I should like to place on record that Lance Corporal Hawthorne met his death like a man and a soldier,” he wrote.

Hawthorne was buried at Warlincorte Halte CWGC Cemetery, close to Arras. It was to be many, many years before he got the pardon he so richly deserved.

He will be remembered at a ceremony at Alrewas’ National Arboretum on October 29. Three more stakes, representing soldiers executed for mutiny, will be placed at the “Shot at Dawn” memorial, created by Birmingham artist Andy de Comyn.

One of those stakes is a tribute to Hawthorne.

Sue Satterthwaite of the Aldridge Great War Project said: “Fred Hawthorne had been at the Front for 18 months and had seen a lot of action. He went ‘Over the Top’ on July 1 and saw many of his mates killed and injured.

“Shortly afterwards, his battalion moved to an area a few miles north of the Somme when the incident which led to his court martial occurred.

“Many historians believe that Fred was shot as an example to others and as a scapegoat for a failed operation.

“My husband and I were pleased to be able to visit Fred’s grave in 2014 and to lay a cross saying that Aldridge does not forget.

“So far we have laid crosses at the graves of about 40 local men and will visit more later this year.”

We will never forget

quote-all-war-is-a-symptom-of-man-s-failure-as-a-thinking-animal-john-steinbeck-287478

John Steinbeck: A personal hero.

It’s that time of year when I note Remembrance here in the UK and personally express my gratitude and concern for those who lost their lives in the service of our country – this post is one I make every year, but evolves as I think and reflect on those who paid and continue to pay a huge price for our freedom.

I know and have known many people, including several great friends whose lives and families have been deeply scarred by war and military service,

The battles that haunt these people – both the ones on the battlefield, and those in their heads – trouble me to this day and I honour and recognise their sacrifice, and that of those who didn’t return from some foreign field.

This year’s Armistice Day Service in Brownhills, as photographed yesterday by David Evans.

The business of recording here the lives and histories here of those who fought in the service of the UK in any theatre of conflict goes on, and there will be more history recorded  upon this blog in the coming hours, weeks and hopefully, years. Although these people were largely ordinary, what they gave was extraordinary and their stories should be recorded and shared.

There is plenty of work still being done by local bloggers and historians into the service of local people, better that we should recognise and fully pay tribute to them. Work by people like Len and Sue at the Aldridge Great War project, Andrew Thornton, whose patient and thorough research is stunning, the precision of Andy Dennis, the continuing labours of David Evans and the intimate, loving and personal work of Linda Mason, whose Remembrance post this year is as ever, thoughtful and poignant – you can read it by clicking here.

Linda Mason does it again – a cracking post on the nature of Remembrance published a couple of days ago. Click the screenshot to read it in full.

I’d like to express my personal gratitude, and I hope you’ll allow me to speak for the wider community too in thanking all those who worked so hard to raise funds to pay for management of Remembrance Sunday parades – people like Ian Neville whose energy seems limitless, Lee Bragginton and the kids of Walsall WoodDave Whitehouse in Pelsall and so many more who undertook challenges, staged events and the countless others who dug deep, including commercial sponsors.

That this fundraising is necessary at all depresses me deeply, but I’m thankful of the community spirit it demonstrates.

As I have done previously here, I suggest we spare some time today to think of those who fought in wars we don’t remember so readily. At the moment, we seem to be particularly caught up in memories of both world wars, but I’d like to think we can spare some time for those lost in smaller, but just as personally devastating conflicts.

The disaster that was Korea cost 1038 service lives; the 1939-1948 Palestine uprising that gave birth to the State of Israel 338. While 16 gave their lives over the Suez Crisis, 768 died during The Troubles nearer home.

We remember all of those lost, whatever theatre of conflict saw their service.

Recently, BBC One has shown a fictional drama set in the now virtually unmentioned conflict  in the mid 1960s – Aden, which was arguably the last gasp of a dying British Empire, seeing 90 British forces killed and 510 casualties. The Aden Emergency commenced the escalation of modern Middle Eastern terrorism and resulted in the end of British Rule and the creation of South Yemen, Seeds from this conflict grew bitter fruit that the world still reaps.

The drama itself, called The Last Post, was bleak and harsh, and not without controversy regarding it’s historical accuracy, but brought home the claustrophobic intensity and almost bizarre contrasts of a terrible and ill-fated conflict.

Once again, I will remind readers of the Korean war, a military misadventure in the early 1950s that not only saw over 1,000 fatalities but also a similar number taken prisoner of war. Few today talk about it, but it must be remembered. This awful conflict touched my family and that of friends, the effects every bit as devastating as more widely understood campaigns.

Korea is a battle that scarred many, and it’s of personal importance to me that we should remember them.

I once more include below some videos forming a documentary about Korea, and if you get time today, please watch them. There’s a message here that echoes down the decades.

Yet again this year, I find myself troubled by the changing nature of the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance, and the way it seems to be becoming employed in some corners of the media and society. To me, Remembrance should be solemn, reverential and thoughtful. The poppy is a symbol of this, and of course The Haig Fund. If you wish to display it, fine, but those who do not – for whatever reason – should not be harangued into doing so. Such offensive enforcement isn’t why those intended to be remembered gave their all.

The Poppy is not political, patriotic or nationalist; it is a simple symbol of solemn recollection and thanks. And because this is still a free country, people are free to participate or otherwise, and that should be respected.

Whilst I of course donate and support Remembrance like I would hope we all do, it should be borne in mind that The Haig Fund – set up nearly a century ago – only came into being due to governmental failure to support ex-servicement and their families, a situation sadly unchanged to this day, leaving many who served and who paid the highest of prices dependent on charity.

I really wish that wasn’t the case.

As to the charities themselves, I’m still supporting the work of Soldiers Off The Street. A fine charity without expensive layers of bureaucracy who are making a real difference to ex-forces homelessness. Please click on the link and check them out.

Wood hunt Tigers nearly to extinction, while Villans fail to storm Montpelier

Images and captions kindly supplied ny David Evans.

Yesterday (Saturday 11th November 2017) Walsall Wood F.C. entertained Fenlanders Holbeach United, and after some great football, Wood emerged once again the decisive  victors with an impressive 5-0 scoreline.

Bill Shaw was there, and came home a happy man:

Hiya Bob,

As the report says, a good crowd, a great atmosphere, five goals without reply and then the leaders Studley getting turned over at Leicester Road, it doesn’t get much better than that. So it’s now five points behind with four games in hand.

It’s Brocton on Tuesday night, a Wood bogey team recently but struggling this season, so if we follow the form book it could be two points the difference with three games in hand. It’s a bit late for me so I won’t be there, but I’ll hopefully make the Heath Hayes game  at the Colliery Ground on Saturday.

It’s looking good, so keep the faith everyone, it looks like being a good Christmas at the Wood.

F. A. Vase Round 2
Walsall Wood 5 v 0 Holbeach United

A large crowd and a great atmosphere that rivalled that of season 2012-2013 and we all know what happened then. Wood were simply too good for the level five visitors, 4-0 up at half time with Keenan Meakin-Richards opening his goal account with a deflected 45th minute drive to allow them a second half stroll.

The Tigers won an early corner in an interesting opening, neither keeper was troubled but it was Wood who soon steadied the nerves. Craig Deakin won the ball on halfway on eight minutes and played the ball down the line to Peter Till, he beat one man, cut inside and fed Paul Sullivan, his low drive pushed away by keeper Rick Drury but only to Tony Clarke who fired home to open the scoring. Two minutes later Clarke released Deakin into the left of the box and he went down under an awkward challenge – penalty – Paul Sullivan made no mistake 2-0. Three minutes later a lovely through ball from Chris Slater released Sullivan into the left of the box, he cut back inside and rolled a ball to the far post to find Lee Butler who got his feet in a tangle, hitting the ball back across the box.

On 17 minutes from a right wing free kick for the Tigers the ball was flicked on to Joe Smith, his first time effort deflected narrowly wide.

Walsall Wood FC pay their Armistice Day respects, as captured by Russell Smith’s superlative The-Wood.TV.

Five minutes later a long ball forward from skipper Mitch Tolley into the right of the box was collected at pace by Clarke who was clipped by a defender and lost his footing resulting in a penalty – Sullivan 3-0.

After a quiet spell Smith wide right for the Tigers hit a cross into the centre that was collected by Spencer Tinkler, his low drive deflected for a corner that was easily cleared.

At the end of the half Wood had the visitors pegged in their own box with three shots blocked until the ball fell to Tolley on the edge of the box, he rolled the ball into the path of Keenan Meakin-Richards 25 yards out, he hit a first time low drive that took a wicked deflection off a defender completely wrong-footing Drury and surely sealing Woods place in round 3.

The second half was played at a more sedate pace and it took until 56 minutes for the first opening, Lewis Hayden combining wide right with Till, his cross volleyed acrobatically over the far angle by Sullivan. two minutes later it was 5-0, Andy Westwo

od twice involved as Wood ripped open the defence before Sullivan was released into the left of the box, his low cross to the far post hit home by Clarke.

Ten minutes later Gavin Hurren won a ball on halfway, his 60 yard crossfield ball picked out Butler wide right, he went throughtwo challenges and his cross cum shot landed on the roof of the net at the far angle. On 79 minutes substitute Stan Mugisha was found on the right of the box, he held the ball up before cleverly turning his marker and rolling a cross shot just wide of the far post.

To their credit for the last 10 minutes the Tigers (level five remember) tried to take the game to their lower league opponents and to ironic cheers from the Wood faithful actually managed a couple of shots on target.

So it’s Wood who go into Monday’s draw and things later got even better for them with the news that leaders Studley had lost at Leicester Road, so the gap at the top is still five points but Wood now have four games in hand.

It’s Brocton in the league away on Tuesday night, with Heath Hayes the hosts on Saturday as Wood look to close the gap on the leaders.

Bill Shaw

The teams:

Walsall Wood – Ransome, Hayden, Deakin, Meekin-Richards, Slater, Tolley (captain), Butler, Westwo od, Sullivan, Clarke, Till, Mugisha, McFarlane, Gardner, Hurren, Fitzpatrick.

Holbeach United – Drury, Harker, Jackson (captain), Cartwright, Braithwaite, Dougill, Bird, Tinkler, Leckie, Oliver, Smith, Davies, Richardson, Griffiths, Ede.

As ever, thanks to Bill for the report, and the young David Evans for the photos – always appreciated.

Meanwhile, a report from Saturday 4th November 2017’s match at Oak Park between Pelsall Villa and Montpelier. This is an interesting one because it was the Villan’s first match at their new, temporary home of Oak Park. Both David and Simon Evans went to the match, and enjoyed a good game.

Images and captions by the young David Evans

Simon Evans wrote:

Pelsall Villa 0 v 0 Montpelier 4.11.17

Montpelier started brightly, the first attack saw the Montpelier striker burst through but the shot was straight at Pelsall’s keeper. Pelsall’s response was swift. Some nice play but the final ball was lacking.

Montpelier then had a brief spell of pressure. Max Black nearly opened the scoring for Pelsall, but the header was straight at the keeper. Montpelier then had a brief spell of pressure, but the Pelsall Villa defence held tight.

Pelsall s attacker then had a shot which the Montpelier goalkeeper got at the second attempt.

Half time: 0-0

The second half was similar to the first, both teams trying to play football, Montpelier attacker forcing the Pelsall’s keeper to a smart save.

Both teams playing some nice football without creating the cutting edge.

In the end it finished 0-0. For Pelsall a good performance against the team third in the league.

Simon Evans

Thanks to Bill Shaw and the Evans boys for the reports – it’s all kicking off down at The Wood!

Pictures from the Brownhills Armistice Day 2017 Remembrance Service

Ian Neville and friends ready for the off on a gruelling sponsored run. Image Kindly supplied by David Evans.

I’m indebted to David Evans here for very promptly sending me this lovely gallery of images from this morning’s Remembrance Service at St. James Church, Brownhills.

Whilst Remembrance Sunday sees a larger event with the parade, there is always a quiet and reverential service at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day, and David and a range of other local folk were there.

It’s also worth pointing out that local charity whizz Ian Neville and pals were also at the service, after which they commenced their sponsored run to Walsall Cenotaph via Pelsall and Bloxwich War Memorials to raise money for next year’s Remembrance Parade. You can donate to the fund by clicking here.

Thanks to all for their participation, Remembrance and respect, and thanks to David for supplying lovely photos of such an important community event.

All images Kindly supplied by David Evans.

David Evans donated his jumper for a goalpost!

Hello young man, can I interest you in life insurance?

Just a quick one – if you want to see a face truly made for radio, the young David Evans currently has a role as footy pundit talking about this afternoon’s Walsall Wood match against Holbeach United and the team’s prospects in issue 9 of Jumpers for Goalposts.

For football people, do check out these great great video casts, yet another project of the tireless Russell Smith, media mogul of the Aldridge Parish and top bloke all round.

In the meantime, if you know the gentleman in the white shirt, Walsall Wood FC are currently trying to find his family and return him home. It’s not often people get abandoned on the steps of their local football club, but there you go…

Meet your local coppers in Pelsall this afternoon!

Come meet your local buzzes in Pelsall this afternoon… image from West Midlands Police.

I received notice of another useful late afternoon ‘Meet the public’ popup event via the excellent WMNow service yesterday – it takes place this afternoon, Friday 10th November 2017 in Pelsall – these are great initiatives where you can meet your local policing team and get help, crime prevention and public safety advice.

The policing team will be at the Spar general store in Pelsall from 3pm until 6pm.

Since Pelsall, Rushall and Brownhills share the same policing team, this is a good chance for anyone from our area to meet the local policing team.

I must say, it’s good to see the local police making continuous efforts to reach out to the public. Long overdue.

Also, if you haven’t signed up for WMNow, please do – it’s free and you can select to receive alerts on all kinds of local issues. It’s a fine thing.

Details of 2017 local Remembrance events – live list

This post is pinned to the top until Sunday – new material will appear below.

Remembrance Sunday 2011 Aldridge

Remembrance Sunday 2011 Aldridge, by Andrew Watson, posted in his Flickr photo stream.

Following my request for information to make a list of local Remembrance events, I can again share with readers a list of local Remembrance services taking place locally this Remembrance Sunday, 12th November 2017 – this list will be updated with more info as I get it.

I’m still after details of events not mentioned – Particularly Stonnall, Shenstone and Darlaston. Comment here or mail me on BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com if you have information to share. All welcome!

Thanks to Kate Goodall for the help!

I’d particularly like to thank here all those who have worked so hard to fund road closures for local parades, particularly Ian Neville who has been an absolute dynamo in Brownhills and deserves an award and our thanks – but also Lee Braggington, Molly Lloyd and all the folks in Walsall Wood; the people over in Pelsall who’ve pushed and pushed, and to all the folks from organisations like the British Legion who’ve worked hard to help, too.

You’re all shining stars in our community.

This post will remain pinned to the top of the blog until Sunday, so the information is to hand. Just click the ‘more’ link in grey below if necessary for the full details.

Has your bin not been emptied? There’s a reason for that…

The seen of the depot fire at the weekend. Image from the Environment Agency.

Right Walsall Borough folks, listen up – I know some of you are concerned about bin collections at the moment as the service is clearly experiencing difficulties, on the very week that Walsall refuse collection schedules have changed.

The reason for the problems is that as you may be aware, there was a very serious fire at the Fryers Road refuse and bulking depot in Bloxwich over the weekend, which has caused capacity issues for the Council who are currently trying to engage extra capacity to cover the shortfall.

This fire could not have come at a worse time in light of the schedule changes this week, and the council are taking a battering on social media. Please be patient.

Today Clean and Green issued the following statement:

Due to the fire at Fryers Road tip it is likely that residents will experience a disruption to their bin collection.

This has come at one of our busiest times with most households having a change to their collection day.

Whilst we understand this will be frustrating our teams are working hard to rectify the situation and find alternate places to tip our waste.

We will keep our residents updated, please leave your bin out for collection if we dont get to your street on the scheduled collection day.

Thank you for your patience

Whilst I appreciate this is annoying, please spare a thought for the poor folks dealing with this – they are taking some shameful abuse and there’s no need for that whatsoever.

Nobody will die for a minor delay in bin collection.

Events

Following tonight’s meeting we have an extra special treat. Our very own Alan Hill will give a talk on:

Sir Joseph Bazalgette & the Great Stink of London

Throughout human history, the number one cause of death has been contaminated water – in some parts of the world it still is. In mid-19th century Britain, polluted water was still a major problem – four outbreaks of Cholera in London claimed over 37,000 lives. This is the story of how Sir Joseph Bazalgette, Chief Engineer to the Metropolitan Board of Works overcame disease & reshaped London in the process.

Alan is a member of the trust and is working as part of our engineering team who are carefully cleaning and protecting the brightwork on the engine. The engineering team are doing sterling work, so do pop down to the pumping station and say hello.

Health and Safety

We are really pleased to report that there have been no incidents relating to health and safety. A very big thank you to everyone for working safely.

Dave is, of course, one of the leading lights of Lichfield Discovered, along with Kate ‘Cardigan’ Gomez from Lichfield Lore.

It’s great to see people like Dave encourage a better attitude to our historic buildings, rather than that which we seem to have here in Walsall, where we regard heritage architecture as merely ‘fuel’.

Please do attend if you’re able, it’s sure to be enlightening and educational.

The Friends of Brownhills Common – November 2017 meeting coming soon

38703574

We all love the common, but its management has proven controversial. Why not pop along to the meeting and discuss the issues with the experts and other users?

Here’s one for people interested in the issues surrounding Brownhills Common – theres a meeting this Monday 20th November 2017 of the Freinds of Brownhills Common group at the Environmental Depot, 200 Pelsall Road, Brownhills – WS8 7EN – please meet in the reception by 7:00pm.

Brownhills Common needs a good active friends group and this is your opportunity to join in and have your say in shaping the future management of the open space we all love.

The meeting is also open to the general public who may not wish to join the friends group, but are encouraged to attend and hear what everyone has to say.

It’s important that we recognise what a valuable, fragile and important habitat Brownhills Common is, and why it requires careful and measured stewardship.

You can read the minutes of the last meeting here.

If you’ve only heard the alarmists, it’s a good opportunity to go out and meet, talk and listen to people who understand the issues and want to preserve the wildlife, and to help shape the future of Brownhills’ greatest asset.

Tonight’s Walsall Wood FC v Wednesfield match OFF

ob_0b2c16_12144880-1075629582449107-636165154849

Doing fine here…

This evening, Tuesday 7th November  2017

Walsall Wood FC were due to face Wednesfield at Oak Park this evening. Sadly, it’s been cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch.

I believe the clubhouse will still be open should you fancy a pint close to water.

Urgent! Please look out for this stolen motorbike seen in Brownhills

Have you seen this bike since Saturday? If you have, it’s been nicked. Image posted Facebook by  Josh Anderton.

Brownhills Community Centre and their new Lamp arts space are the home of Brownhills Community Association, and is situated just by the Miner Island in central Brownhills. They always have lots going on for people from the town – and the wider community – to enjoy.

The Community (or Activity) Centre is what my generation would know as ‘The Annexe’ – the old Central Boy’s School, now a bustling community resource. To find out more about the events and activities there, you can pop in or call them on 01543 452119.

The Community Association have lots of stuff going on, and loads of great facilities, right in the heart of Brownhills. I love what they’re about and all the great things they’re doing.

Do you remember Ann the dressmaker from Shelfield?

Do you remember Moira McCormick, Ann or Mervyn? Image from the remarkable Apple Maps.

A quick enquiry I’ve had in the last couple of days reaches me from Moira McCormick, and former local resident, who is trying to trace her lost pal Ann – and the memories she shares are wonderfully evocative.

Moira wrote:

Dear Bob

Thank you so much for your truly wonderful blog. I love reading about all that goes on near the place where I  grew up and it reminds me of the wonderful Community spirit alive and still flourishing in the West Midlands. Thank you!

I have a request. In the 1960s around about 1966 to 70 I had a friend who lived on the corner of either New Street or School Street and the Lichfield Road in Shelfield. I always look at her house when I pass it on one of my trips to see my family and every time I feel so sad that we lost touch. Her name is Ann and I can’t remember her last name. Her mum was Greek. Ann was the most amazingly talented dressmaker and whenever I had any spare money, off I would go either to Walsall Market (now sadly depleted) or to Birmingham, to  buy some fabric. I would then design my outfit, present Ann with a drawing and she came up with the most wonderful clothes for me.

She was friends with a very dapper chap called Mervyn or Melvin, he was quite distinctive in appearance, always dressed in suits.. .and a kipper tie, usually in a flamboyant colour and used to wear trendy black square spectacles. They often went on a Friday and Saturday night to the Discotheque at the Royal Hotel Walsall.

Ann was a wonderful, kind and gentle person. If she should read this… I remember her buying me my first ever bottle of perfume. Youth Dew by Estée Lauder, which along with Brut filled the air of many a night club in the sixties!

If anyone knows of Ann and can put me in touch I would be incredibly grateful. I have such fond memories of her. I imagine she would have had a hugely successful career as a dressmaker and so I am hoping someone will remember her.

Bob has my number if anyone wants to text me with any info.

Many thanks
Moira McCormick

Thanks Moira for some lovely memories – they are so beautiful. I’m sure someone out there must have their memory jogged by this.

If you can help, please do: Either comment on this post directly, or mail me: Brownhillsbob at Googlemail dot com, and I’ll hook you up. Cheers.

Walsall Wood drive a tank through Alvis

The Coventry Alvis ground looks like a really nice venue. Imagery from Google Maps.

You can’t keep a good team down, and yesterday (Saturday 4th November 2017) Walsall Wood FC visited Coventry Alvis and demolished the home side 7-0.

There will be a report and images from the first Pelsall Villa home match at Oak Park in the next few days, stay tuned. The Villans held Montpelier to a respectable 0-0 draw.

Also, don’t forget it’s the legendary Walsall Wood FC bonfire and fireworks event tonight – all kicks off at 5pm. See here for details.

Bill Shaw was there, and despite his ‘retired’ status (cough) and he liked what he saw, and is really getting into this season:

Hiya Bob,

The game went true to form in the end with Paul Sullivan’s  introduction from the bench the killer blow for the tiring basement outfit, his hat-trick coming in just 15 minutes. Four new signings on show as Birchy continues to strengthen his squad, two of them scoring on their debuts.

With Studley in league action away to Leicester Road next Saturday, (the only team to beat us in the league remember) things could get very interesting.

I’ll be watching the Wood against Holbeach United in a replay of the 2015-2016 encounter that saw Wood 4-1 winners in the FA Vase that day.

Coventry Alvis 0 v 7 Walsall Wood

Wood had to work hard for this win but four goals in the last 17 minutes gave the scoreline a more realistic look, with leading scorer Paul Sullivan coming off the bench for 30 minutes to score a hat-trick, two for Tony Clarke and a goal each for debutants Stan Mugisha and Matt Gardener.

Wood took almost complete control from the off, a right wing attack on two minutes saw Tony Clarke race into the right of the box, his rising drive beat the keeper but was hacked off the line. Eight minutes saw Peter Till fade across the face of the home box from wide left, his low drive bouncing to safety off the far post.

After 10 minutes of one way traffic Josh Dixon intercepted a poor Wood pass was allowed to run on, his vicious drive from the edge of the box blocked by skipper Mitch Tolley.

Normal service soon resumed when a minute later Stan Mugisha came inside from wide right, his low drive beat keeper Jack Tregarth only for the ball to be blocked on the line.

Just to keep Wood on their toes Ryan Isherwood intercepted a mis-placed Wood pass on halfway and went for goal, his rising drive from the edge of the box curling wide.

Four minutes later a neat one touch move through the centre ended with Tregarth saving bravely at the feet of Matt Gardener.  A minute later Lewis Hayden combined wide right with Lee Butler, the square ball inside hit first time by Craig Deakin, Tregarth with a superb full length save. On 22 minutes a short left wing corner was played to Deakin whose far post cross saw Mugisha’s flicked header flash wide.  A minute later a powerful header forward by Keenan Meakin-Richards was headed on by Gardener to Clarke who rounded the advancing keeper only for his shot to be blocked by fast back pedalling defenders.  A minute later Gardener raced down the left side of the box, his low driven cross just in front of Clarke.  On 25 minutes Hayden crossed from wide right to find Butler whose first time effort brought another full length save from Tregarth. Three minutes later a left wing corner was bulleted goal-wards by Callum McFarlane, Tregarth clawing the ball away.  The opening goal finally arrived on 35 minutes, a neat move through the centre saw Gardener release Mugisha into the box, he calmly rounded the stranded keeper before rolling the ball home. Two minutes later Tregarth was back in action pushing over a rising drive from Gardener.  The keeper was powerless a minute later when Gardener raced through on a ball into the centre of the box, rounded the keeper and slotted home Woods’ second.

To their credit the home side came out all guns blazing in the second half but couldn’t find a way through Woods’ solid defence.

On 49 minutes Hayden played a ball inside from wide right to find Gardener, he held the ball up well before turning and firing over. Alvis continued to deny Wood space, then on 60 minutes Paul Sullivan returned to action after a month out.  He was soon in action racing onto a Mugisha ball wide left, his ball inside found Clarke whose shot was blocked.  On 65 minutes Till hit a left wing cross that was headed out to Hayden who set up Jonathan Gould to turn and fire just wide. Three minutes later Hayden released Sullivan wide right, he cut inside chipped the ball over the advancing Tregarth, Aaron Cheshire hacking the ball off the line. Clarke won the ball on the left of the box, cut inside and fired the ball into the roof of the net. Five minutes later it was four, Hayden intercepted a pass on halfway and fed Sullivan through the centre, he ran on and calmly beat the advancing keeper. On 80 minutes Sullivan got clear wide left, his cross to the far post inches in front of the fast arriving Hayden. Two minutes later it was Hayden releasing Sullivan wide right, he cut inside and calmly made it 5-0.

On 86 minutes Kieron Martin intercepted a loose ball by the Wood and ran on but fired over. Two minutes later Gould raced into the left of the box, going down under a clumsy challenge, penalty – Sullivan 6-0.  You had to sympathise now with Alvis, they were running on empty but right on time Clarke was put clear on the right of the box, Tregarth dived bravely at his feet but the striker came away with the ball and scored past two defenders on the line.

The basement boys worked so hard to keep the score down but the introduction of Sullivan on the hour mark was too much for them in the end.  With Studley held to a draw by Atherstone the gap at the top is now cut to five points with Wood now three games in hand. With the leaders facing another big test away at Leicester Road next Saturday Wood could be in an even better position even though they will be in FA Vase action at home to Holbeach United, before that they entertain Wednesfield at home on Tuesday night in the Walsall Senior Cup.

Bill Shaw (retired).

The Teams:

Coventry Alvis – Tregarth, Swain, Upping Cheshire, Keller, Isherwood (captain), Dixon, Steane, Abraham, Wilson, Gobere, Wilkins, Toro, Martin, Bailleul.

Walsall Wood – Ransome, Hayden, Deakin, Meekin-Richards, McFarlane, Tolley (captain), Mugisha, Butler, Gardener, Clarke, Till, Sullivan, Slater, Westwood, Gould, Lawler.

Thanks to Bill for the report as ever – For the Good of The Wood!

Don’t grumble – just whistle! Brownhills gains a great new micropub

A great new social venue right at the top of Brownhills High Street! Image from Colin Cragg.

I’m pleased to announce to readers that, as many of you will already know, Brownhills High Street is set to get it’s first micropub – The Jiggers Whistle when it opens later this month in the old Starlight Photography/EE Jones store near the miner island, overseen by the Tin Mon himself!

This small, intimate bar will serve craft ales and lagers, plus all the usual wines, spirits and soft drinks; there will also be traditional pub games with darts and.pool on offer.

The owners of the new venture, Colin and Theresa Cragg said:

Hi everyone,

Our opening day/night at The Jiggers Whistle in Brownhills High Street will be on Friday 17th of November 2017, 12 noon until 10.30pm.

Regular Opening times will be 12 noon until 10.30pm. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday. Friday, Saturday 12 noon until 11pm. Tuesday CLOSED.

If you want to keep up with the latest news, follow The Jiggers Whistle Facebook page here for more information.

Hope to see you all soon.

Colin & Teresa

Images from old friend of the blog David Hodgkinson and Colin Cragg.

I contacted Colin to ask about the new pub, which follows the success of many similar small pub-bars in retail areas in towns across the UK – Locally we have The Whippet in Lichfield, The Turtles Head in Aldridge, and all have been highly praised.

I asked Colin what The Jiggers Whistle was all about.

Thank you I’ve been living in Brownhills for around 6 years now and love the history surrounding Brownhills and the Miners.

I’m glad locals are happy with the idea of The Jiggers Whistle -I’ve had a few good comments also from passers by while I’ve been working on the building.

I’m no big buisness man or anything like that I just want to bring something different to Brownhills which I have grown to love, and the place is named after the Miner Sculpture and the story behind it of Jack ‘Jigger’ Taylor.

I will be displaying old prints of Brownhills and surroundings on the pub walls too like old Anchor Bridge, St. James c]Church and so on.

Brownhills High Street has been crying out for some new blood and ideas, and I think this micropub is an excellent idea we can all get behind – and there aren’t too many decent real ale venues in the locality, so another is always welcome.

I wish Colin and Teresa all the best in their new venture, and look forward to sampling a pint or two in a spanking new venue!

Holland Park bonfire and fireworks – on tonight!

All the details here. Be prepared for a longer entry time than usual as extra security checks will be in force.

Just a quick reminder that tonight, Thursday 2nd November 2017 sees the annual Walsall Council bonfire and firework display in Holland Park , Brownhills.

Gates open at 6pm, bonfire lit at 7pm and fireworks at 8pm – but get there early: The green spaces team have informed me that this year there are additional security checks on those entering which may cause a longer entry time than anticipated – but this is for everyone’s safety, so please be patient if there are any queues.

As well as the normal pyrotechnical delights, there will be food and kid’s amusements available as usual.

If you don’t make this one, the council event at Willenhall is on 4th November and Walsall Arboretum on the 5th. There’s also the traditional and very good burn-up at Walsall Wood Football Club on Sunday 5th.

If you’re wondering why this event has moved from a Saturday, Greenspaces have listened to complaints that holding the bonfires on successive Saturdays in different areas makes some too far from November 5th, so there you go – these are great people listening to complaints.

Entry is still a pocket-pleasing £4 for adults and £1 for kids – plus little ones under 5 get in free.

For safety reasons – no fireworks or sparklers. No alcohol allowed. Under 14s must be accompanied by an adult.

I congratulate Walsall Council on this event, which I’m genuinely surprised to see.

They wrote:

Gates at these three venues open at 6.00pm, the bonfire will be lit at 7.00pm and the firework display starts at 8.00pm.

That looks like quite a show! Note you MUST BUY TICKETS IN ADVANCE FOR THIS ONE.

Cars broken into last night in Walsall Wood – take care folks

Images posted on Facebook by Sarah Stokes

A worrying appeal reaches me from Walsall Wood, where cars were broken into yesterday evening (Tuesday, 31st October 2017) and other antisocial behaviour seems to have occurred near the senior citizens bungalows at Brook Close.

Sarah Stokes wrote:

Another gentleman’s bungalow has been egged too!

Absolutely disgusting behaviour targeting OAP’s…

If anybody saw anything please let me know.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Walsall Police by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or you can contact Sarah directly via Facebook here.

Please, lets see if we can nail these gits.

Oh deer me!

Impressive rack mate – but you really need to avoid the moss-road.

This is just a warning folks – last night whilst riding home (Tuesday, 31st October 2017) at about 7pm, I met this chap, grazing contentedly, and not at all scared of passing cars, right on the bend in Green Lane at the darkest spot by Coppice Woods.

Whilst I love to see the majestic creatures, the danger to himself and traffic this proud lad posed was real and chilling, particularly as he was showing no inclination to move on.

This stag – I call him Ringo as he seems to be the chap who’s twice this season got life rings hooked over his antlers, presumably from the sewage works – has no fear and all the apparent brains of a treestump. He was posing a real traffic hazard and didn’t care.

I’ve also seen deer cross the Chester Road between the woods and park and at Sandhills, Shire Oak as well as all the usual spots by Chasewater, Clayhanger and the commons.

Watch out for deer around the green spaces of Walsall and South Staffordshire all the time – but particularly on these dark mornings and evenings. Hitting an adult red deer, which are top heavy and can weight a considerable amount – can kill both you and the animal. Be slow, be observant, and take care.

Maybe we should revisit the idea of fitting these buggers with hi-viz

I’ll be glad when the hormones settle down and he slinks back into the scrub for another year.

Here’s some good info from the Deer Aware campaign, issued in 2016 but it still holds true.

Motorists warned to watch for deer in mating season

Highways England and The Deer Initiative have joined forces to warn motorists about the heightened risk of collisions involving deer at this time of year.

Across the UK it is estimated that there could be up to 74,000 deer-related motor vehicle accidents this year alone, resulting in 400 to 700 human injuries and 20 deaths. The combined economic impact of injury accidents and car damage is likely to exceed £50 million a year.

October through to December is considered a high-risk period as deer will be on the move for the autumn mating season, also known as the rut. The highest risk of a deer-vehicle collision is between sunset and midnight, and the hours shortly before and after sunrise.

Tony Sangwine, Senior Principal Environmental Adviser at Highways England said: “Our top priority is safety – that is why we are working with the Deer Initiative to warn motorists about these particular risks. Deer are highly active at this time of the year, meaning they can suddenly appear on the road, at both dawn and dusk.

‘With most deer movement coinciding with key commuting hours, we are urging drivers to be more aware so that they can complete their journeys on our roads safely and without incident.’

Some 1.5million deer live wild in the UK. There are six main species. Highways England’s advice to drivers is:

  • When you see deer warning signs or are travelling through a heavily wooded or forested stretch of road, check your speed and stay alert.
  • If your headlights are on, use full-beams when you can; but dip them if you see deer, as they may ‘freeze’.
  • More deer may follow the first one you see.
  • Be prepared to stop. Try not to suddenly swerve to avoid a deer. Hitting oncoming traffic or another obstacle could be even worse.
  • If you have to stop, use your hazard warning lights.
  • Do not approach an injured deer – it could be dangerous.

If you need to report a deer vehicle collision or to find out more on safety advice please visit ehe Deer Aware website which offers advice on how to avoid a collision and to collect data on the number of accidents.

Our research is the only national effort to collect data that could be used to save lives – the information you submit is an essential part of this important effort.

2017 local Remembrance events – let’s make a list – can you help please?

12219471_490070897862035_188197736618274891_n

Brownhills always puts on a sombre, dignified event. Local children paid their respects in 2015, as captured by the good folk of St. James Church.

This is just a quick request for help – in past years, we have crowdsourced from readers a list of local Remembrance parades and events taking place throughout the area, that was popular and useful to many of the readership.

I’d like to match last year’s list if I can.

Despite rumours to the contrary, there are still a huge range of local services taking place, although some parades may be changed a little due to well-publiscised policing issues.

If you contribute details I’ll wrap them all up into a big post later in the week before Remembrance Sunday.

If you can supply details for any local event in Walsall or South Staffordshire, please comment here or mail me. I know people tend to travel to their home Remembrance event, and we have a wide audience, so stuff in the wider area is very much welcome.

Thanks to Ray Smythe I already have details for Heath Hayes and Wimblebury, and I believe Russell Smith has published details for Aldridge today. Any help is welcome.

I’d also like readers to take photos of their local events if they can and I’ll feature them here; particularly after photos of Brownhills, Walsall Wood and Norton if possible.

If you’d rather, feel free to mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

Walsall Wood fight to hard to beat Hinckley

Images and captions kindly supplied by the young David Evans

Yesterday afternoon (Saturday 28th October 2017) had Walsall Wood at home to entertain visitors Hinckley, and Walsall Wood continued their wining streak – but not without a hard fight.

Bill Shaw was there, as ever, and sent the following match report:

Hiya Bob,

Another three points but it certainly was by no means easy.  Hinckley scored all the goals, unfortunately for them two into their own net.

There was some good football played by both sides but each team struggled to break down well organised defences.

The win keeps Wood four points adrift of leaders Studley but still with two games in hand.

Bill Shaw (centre left) brings his white-haired mate (centre right) to the match. You need to eat more pies, Bill. Image appropriated from David’s set above.

Walsall Wood 2 v 1 Hinckley

Another hard earned three points for Wood as they keep the gap to leaders Studley at four. Two goals from the Hinckley central defenders midway through the first half had put Wood firmly in control but a double save by keeper Tyrell Belford on 41 minutes kept them in the game, they then went up the other end and Steve Hart scored a peach, suddenly it was a very different contest but Wood defended superbly to record their first double of the season.

The visitors opened brightly, on five minutes a long ball forward by keeper Tyrell Belford was headed down by Josh Willis into the path of Steve Hart, he raced into the right of the box, keeper Lloyd Ransome saving bravely at his feet.

On 10 minutes a right wing run by Lewis Hayden saw him release Tony Clarke into the right of the box, he cut inside and went down under a clumsy challenge, loud penalty shouts ignored. Six minutes later Sam Agar pounced on a poor clearance on the right edge of the box, his neat ball back found Clarke who ran across the face of the box only to have his shot blocked.  Wood went ahead on 24 minutes, Clarke raced away wide left, had the benefit of the bounce as he made the box, his vicious low cross put into his own net by Dominic Perkins under pressure from Agar.  From the re-start Wood won the ball back, Mitch Tolley released Clarke wide left, he cut inside and hit a rising drive that brought a superb full length save from Belford.

Peter Till was fouled wide left on 32 minutes, Jordan Fitzpatrick fired in the free kick that bounced off the inside of the far post and back across goal, with a posse of Wood players bearing down on him Richard Munday headed into his own net to put Wood two nil ahead.

On 41 minutes Hayden played Clarke into the right of the box, he cut inside, Belford saved bravely at his feet, Clarke swung a foot at the loose ball, Belford somehow keeping the ball out from a kneeling position.

Yet more wonderful, professional match footage from the indefatigable Russell Smith for Thewood-TV – check out their site here.

A minute later a left wing move ended with Hart cutting inside and scoring just inside the near post, putting a totally different slant on the half time team talks.

Hinckley came out at the start of the second half with all guns blazing, first it was Willis putting a header inches over on 47 minutes, a minute later Isaac Cooper cut in from wide left to fire over the far angle. Three minutes later a crossfield ball picked out Marcus Jackson wide right, his far post cross bouncing inches wide. Two minutes later Cooper delivered a howitzer long throw, Perkins just wide with a stooping header.

On 62 minutes a right wing cross from Till was headed back across goal by Fitzpatrick, Andrew Westwood off balance pushing the ball wide.

Four minutes later substitute Bekir Halil fired in a right wing cross under the bar, Ransome acrobatically pushing the ball over. Three minutes later Perkins and Halil combined wide right, Halils’ cross headed goalwards by Willis, Ransome with a comfortable save. On 75 minutes another long throw into the box dropped into the centre, Ransome dropping onto the loose ball.

On 87 minutes a long ball forward into the right of the box was fired goalwards by Hart, Ransome with a superb full length save. On 90 minutes Luke Richards raced into the right of the box, Tolley with a superbly timed challenge.  Into injury time and from a left wing corner Hart put a header onto the roof of the net.

For the third home game in succession Wood were made to work really hard for the victory and being honest a draw would have been a fair result.

It’s JW Hunt cup action on Tuesday night at Gornal Athletic before next Saturday Wood visit bottom club Coventry Alvis.

Bill Shaw.

The Teams:

Walsall Wood – Ransome, Hayden, Deakin, Meakin-Richards, McFarlane, Tolley (captain), Till Westwood, Agar, Clarke, Fitzpatrick, Hurren, Taylor Boyce, Slater, Okojie, Gould.

Hinckley – Belford, Williams, Tomlinson, Perkins, Munday, Lavery Cooper, Willis, Thornton, Hart, Jackson, Healy, Halil, Richards, Minto, Rad.

I know many of you lot love the match reports and news from Oak Park, and it’s great to be able to share them: I thank Bill Shaw profusely – he’s a top bloke.

Walsall Wood Football Club are a top local side with a big-hearted faithful who know how to have a great time supporting their lads, and welcome all comers to come enjoy great local soccer. The boys from The Wood have been at the heart of the local community for a century or more, so please do go check out a match or two if you’re curious.

I guarantee you’ll have more fun cheering on the local chaps than you ever will watching the over-priced prima donnas on TV…

For the good of The Wood!

Tight lines at the Jolly Collier – but when?

The Jolly Collier is a fondly remembered pub. Image from Memories of Old Brownhills by Clarice Mayo and Geoff Harrington.

Great community activist, Brownhills womble and top bloke Brian Stringer has been in touch again to share a newspaper clipping which I think is from the Walsall Observer, from some point in the 1970s.

The clipping, Kindly shared by Gina Young features her father, John Young, and is a profile of the angling club that used to meet at the Jolly Collier pub that once stood on the corner of Coppice Side and the Pelsall Road in Brownhills, but closed in the 1980s and was demolished some time later.

Brian explains:

Hi Bob

A lady named Gina Young has given me this old newspaper cutting of The Jolly Collier angling Club.

Her Father John Young is on there and died just a few weeks ago. She asked if I could pass it on for her.

I know paper clippings are a pain but ig it comes through OK you might be interested. I knew Ivor Shaw who lived in Clayhanger and Ithink he was the cousin of our Bill.

Cheers,
Brian

Thanks Brian, that’s actually a really good quality scan and I’ve transcribed the main text underneath so it’s searchable – cheers to both Gina and yourself for a really interesting find and my condolences to Gina and family for their loss.

I’d be really interested to put complete names to the faces in the image – sadly the names were cropped but we do have Tony Reynolds, Artur Blad-, Ivor Shaw, John Young, Spike Edwards and maybe Trevor Church?

Also I’d be interested in the date, and if you have any memories of this club, others locally or just local angling in general?

What do you know? Please comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers!

A cutting – from the 70s Walsall Observer, I think from the font. Image courtesy of Gina Young and Brian Stringer. Click for a larger version, text transcribed below.

They’re ambitious and keen at Brownhills

Brownhills Angling Club members meet everv Monday night at the Jolly Collier, Clayhanger, but they rarely discuss the club. Always, the subject is match fishing.

This is hardly surprising as all the members are ardent match anglers who have banded together for mutual help and support on the open match circuit. Formed less than three years ago by a few prominent local anglers, the club are making quite a name throughout the Midlands both in individual and team events.

Said secretary Ivor Shaw: “Match fishing today is highly competitive, extremely expensive, and complicated by constantly changing techniques. One man on his own has little chance of reaching the top even if he can afford to go it alone.

“It is important to be able to swap ideas and discuss tactics with other top class anglers and this is why we formed the Brownhills club. We have grouped together to help further our own ambitions.

“For example, four to a car to distant venues helps to cut down expenses. Bait problems are minimised as there is always one of us able to obtain supplies, and the ticket problem is also lessened to some extent because we are able to plan ahead and send for them in bulk.”

The club are affiliated to the Birmingham AA and tha Provincial AA in order to obtain association cards and to become eligible for various team copelitions. “We almost won the PAA team ehampiondhip last season,” said Ivor, “Every member of our six-man squad turned in a good performance and the only team that beat us were lucky to include a runaway winning individual catch in their total.”

Although the Brownhills lads do not fish matches among themselves they organise two or three open contests each se, son on the River Wye. This s a river on which most of them seem to do well, particularly in the open matches at Redbrook.

In one event last season six of the club gained high placings and it is rare for them to come away empty handed.

Probably their most outstanding member last season was Tony Reynolds, an up and coming match angler who was placed in several opens. But others who also did well were John Young, Dave Roberts, Jim Antill and Roy Biddulph the well known Shropshire angler.

“Yes, distance is no bar in our club,” said secretary Shaw. “If a chap is keen enough he is made welcome no matter where he lives. We still have room for a few more members, but they must be keen and ambitious to stand the pace.”

Wood scrape past Highgate in penalty nail biter

Photos and captions very kindly supplied by the young David Evans. Nice line flag. Have the others been taking the rise? Let me know and I’ll sort ’em out

Last Tuesday evening (24th October 2017) Walsall Wood were visited by Highgate United, who were narrowly defeated in a tense match decided on a penalty shootout.

Simon Evans was there, and sent the following report:

Hiya Bob,

Walsall Wood 2 v 2 Highgate
Wood winners through 5-4 penalty shootout

Tuesday night saw Walsall Wood play Highgate United in the Polymac Packaging League Cup.

Wood started brightly, Sam Ager was marginally offside after nice build up play, Lewis Hayden’s long range shot sailed just past the post.  Soon afterwards Taylor Boyce’s shot found the bottom of the corner – one nil to the Wood.

Highgate’s response was swift, a counter attack and a header went wide. Johnathan Gould was next to test the Highgate keeper, his shot was turned round for a corner. Highgate’s keeper then raced out to clear from Tony Clarke. Straight up the other end and LLoyd  Ransome in the Wood goal produced a wonderful double save to deny Highgate. Johnathan Gould’s long range shot sailed the wrong side of the post following a Wood corner. Soon afterwards Wood went two-nil up, a great finish from Tony Clarke following a lay off Sam Ager.Half time:

2-0 to Wood

The latest from the wonderful TheWood TV: Pope Frankie – he saves, he scores!
Russell Smith gets to the root of the recent upsurge in fortunes…

Second half started and Highgate went on the offensive from the start, a long range effort was saved by Ransome in the Wood goal. Clarke’s header soon afterwards sailed just over the bar. Soon afterwards Highgate pulled a goal back through Lei Brown. Both teams were going for it, the Highgate keeper was keeping Wood out, The Wood defence was holding strong.

Highgate then got an equalising goal through Rickards. Wood were still creating chances but  the Highgate keeper was standing firm. Then a red card for the Wood player. Highgate kept on pressing for a winner, but the Wood defence held strong.

Full time: 2-2

So after 90 minutes the match went to penalties. Wood winning it 5-4, Andrew Westwood scoring the winning penalty.

Please keep an eye out for this lost wedding ring

Have you found a wedding ring like this one? Claire Mason would love to hear from you. Image posted on Facebook.

Reader Claire Mason has been in touch yesterday (Friday, 27th October 2017) to ask if I would share the following somewhat sad appeal – Her husband has lost his wedding ring somewhere between Chasewater and Brownhills West.

Claire said:

Hi all

If anyone finds a gold wedding ring in the Brownhills West area please let me know.

We went over Chasewater up by the old trotting track through Brownhills Common onto Whitehorse Road.

Thanks everyone
Claire

Please keep an eye out, and if you find it, please either contact Claire directly via Facebook here, comment on this post or mail me: Brownhillsbob at Googlemail do com. Cheers all.

Halloween spooky fun in Shenstone right now!

There’s more Halloween fun over the next couple of days too at the Toby Carvery Shenstone Woodend – formerly the Highwayman pub on the Birmingham Road between Shenstone and Blacke Street.

Friend of the blog Sam Roberts has let me know that right now (Saturday, 28th October 2017) there’s a fun afternoon for kids with Halloween games like apple bobbing, there’s a gruesome kids menu and any child in Halloween fancy dress on Halloween itself will earn a free ice cream!

There’s also a ‘Psychic night’ on Monday 30th October 2017.

Find out more at the popular pub’s west here.

Great Halloween fun at a top local pub restaurant!
