Did you know Alan Pye?

Alan Pye, four decades at Tildesley Ford on Northgate. Images Kindly supplied by Jamie Norgrove.

Old pal of the blog and human dynamo behind Brownhills Musical Theatre Company Jamie Norgrove has been in touch to share some sad news – Jamie’s Grandfather, Alan Pye who worked for years at Tildesley Ford in Aldridge passed away on the 23rd of July, and Jamie would like to invite anyone who knew Alan to the funeral, which takes place on Tuesday.

My sincerest condolences to Jamie and all of Alan’s family and friends – he was clearly a very popular and respected man from the outpouring of respect on social media. Many ford owners will remember Alan from the dealership days on Northgate.

Jamie explained:

Hi Bob

I’m after a favour. I’m trying to get in touch with anyone who worked at Tildesley Ford in Aldridge who would’ve known my Grandad, Alan Pye, affectionately known as ‘Apple’.

He sadly passed away on 23rd July 2017 and it’s his funeral on Tuesday 15th August at 2:15pm at Streetly Crem.

Grandad worked at Tildesley’s for over 40 years and we’d like to let folks know.

I include a picture of the staff at Tildesley Ford on the Northgate around 1980. My Grandad worked there for over forty years.

All welcome at the service or at Barons Court afterwards.

Cheers
Jamie

Thanks to Jamie for sharing the innovation and my sympathies to all for their loss.

Have you seen these bikes stolen from Brownhills in the last few days please?

This is a rather unusual bike, taken from Tamworth Close, Brownhills on Thursday night. Image courtesy of Steph Cowley and posted on Facebook.

A couple of bikes stolen in the last few days locally I’d like readers to keep a look out for if possible please – the first being a Carrera pictured below, stolen from outside Marios Chip Shop, Brownhills on Tuesday, 8th August 2017 and also a very distinctive Cannondale Prophet with Lefty single blade fork pictured above, stolen from Tamworth Close Brownhills on Thursday, 10th August 2017.

Karen Sedgwick Poole said the Carrera was taken from outside the chip shop in Brownhills High Street while the owner was inside between 5:30 and 6:30pm approximately. You can contact her via Facebook here.

Steph Cowley told me about the Cannondale, which is very unusual with the single blade fork; this was taken from Tamworth Close up by the A5 in Brownhills on Thursday night, 10th August 2017 between 10 and 10:30pm. You can contact Steph via Facebook here.

If you know someone that’s suddenly pitched up with a bike matching either description that you feel could be one of these, please do contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

You can also mail me in confidence: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

This black and orange Carrera is pretty distinctive too. Image posted on Facebook by Karen Sedgwick Poole.

Lichfield Waterworks Trust – August 2017 public meeting this Monday

P1120641

Sandfields Pumping Station – a great historic building with immense history and social significance – not just to Lichfield, but to the Black Country. Lichfield Discovered and local historian Dave Moore have saved this valuable asset for the community.

Sandfields Pumping Station champion and public historian extraordinaire Dave Moore has been in touch to let me know that this Monday evening (14th August 2017) there will be the August 2017 Public Meeting of the Lichfield Waterworks Trust charity, formerly the Friends of Sandfields Pumping Station group.

The meeting is at the Bowling Green pub, Lichfield from 7:30pm and is of course open to anyone interested.

Dave wrote:

The Bowling Green serves some great food and real ales.

This is an incredibly exciting community heritage project, so do come along and become involved, we make everyone welcome.

Agenda

Notes of the respective reports and meeting notes are in the link below

Apologies.
Notes of the June 2016 Meeting are here
Matters Arising.

News

Persimmon Homes ltd have granted an extension of the licence for a further six months. This is good news as it gives the trust time to conduct the viability study and also shows that Persimmon are comfortable with the work we are doing.

The work groups are continuing with their sterling work on the building and the engine. A promising start indeed. It is really helpful that we carefully set aside, record and research each of the item in the pumping station now, as this builds a details picture of the past activity’s.

Even the small items that appear insignificant can help build a richer picture of the past history of the site. By doing this, we remove the need to make assumptions and fill in gaps in our knowledge, something we see all too often in heritage sites. Capturing these details now, we leave a trail and a record of events will help future generation gain a fuller understanding of the past events.

Work cleaning the engine is showing some remarkable progress as a reward for a lot of hard and dirty work. We are always looking for more volunteers to help with this work. Onsite training and safety induction will be provided.

The bid team are working hard to put together a grant application for a feasibility study and have now submitted a first draft. Real progress is now being made.

The aim and objective of this study is to develop and produce a sustainable business plan to demonstrate that as a trust we are capable of managing this site in a business-like manner that clearly outlines how we will deliver an ongoing programme of funding, maintenance and renovation of the site. We will also outline how we will make it accessible, preserve the heritage and give benefit to the community in perpetuity.

We have just commenced a Heritage Lottery Fund Resilient Heritage Grant application. Resilient Heritage is a grant that will help and support the trust in becoming more sustainable organisation, help us improve our skills in maintaining the heritage and support us with our community engagement.

Florette Festival Market

We had a stand at the Florette Festival Market 8/9 July. John Child bought his replica Newcomen Beam engine, it was the star attraction. John came last year and his hand built beam engine was quite an eye catcher that aroused a lot of interest. John is an amazing guy who has driven the giant Cornish beam engine at the Museum of water in London. He is a long-term supporter of the work we are doing at Sandfields Pumping station.

Events like this are a great opportunity to show people the valuable work we do in the community, and is an opportunity to engage with the public and share our story with them

Here is a film of John’s beam Engine working

Forthcoming Events
Member Visits to Sandfields Pumping Station

To date, access to the pumping station has been quite restrictive. We know a lot of our members have not seen inside the pumping Station yet, so we are about to rectify this.

We are in a position to take three visitors around Sandfields every Friday morning between 11:00am and 12:00 noon. The visits be pre-booked and is open to members only. If you are not yet a member, then please consider joining us at this link.

Members will be given an event password in a separate email.

To book a visit, please go to our Eventbrite booking page here.

Huddlesford Gathering

Huddlesford Gathering is on the weekend of 23/24 September, we have kindly been invited to have a stand and are therefore looking for volunteers to meet and greet visitors.

Can you help?

If you enjoy meeting people and can spare a couple of houses on either of these days, please get in touch.

Health and Safety

We know people have mixed views about Health and Safety, however we have a very clear view about our members. We think you are incredible and value the work you do; therefore, we want to keep you safe.

We have an amazing health and safety manager, Phil Bowers, who has a very practical no nonsense hands on approach to health and safety.

We like to keep things simple and want our members not to feel daunted by health and safety regulations. We will walk you though the process and give you practical hands on training at a pace set by you.

To date 20 people have received site induction. Those who wish to volunteer on site please let Phil know.

Membership

It would really help us if we develop and grow our membership. If you are not already a member and would you like to be a part of one of the region’s most exciting heritage projects then please, join us now by filling in Membership Application Form by going to our membership page here. It is free to join and be a part of this incredibly exciting project.

Donations

We have incurred some considerable expenditure covering legal costs, insurance and training. We will always invest in our people, and we are planning further training days soon too. All these costs soon mount up, so if you can donate, then please visit our donation page here, any amount is helpful and well appreciated.

You can also do a direct bank transfer:

Bank Details:

HSBC Bank
Account Name: Lichfield Waterworks Trust
Sort Code: 40-28-18
Account Number: 02050722

or

Please make cheques payable to; Lichfield Waterworks Trust, and send to our address:

22 Walsall Road
Lichfield
WS13 8AB

Finally

Thank you everyone for your continued support and helping to make a difference in your community.

We never share your data with anyone else, but we do like to have your details correct. If there are any errors or omissions, please let us know. Our data protection policy is here.

Do pop over to Dave Moore’s blog and check out the history of Sandfields Pumping Station, an almost forgotten gem – the group also has a Facebook page.

Dave is, of course, one of the leading lights of Lichfield Discovered, along with Kate ‘Cardigan’ Gomez from Lichfield Lore.

It’s great to see people like Dave encourage a better attitude to our historic buildings, rather than that which we seem to have here in Walsall, where we regard heritage architecture as merely ‘fuel’.

Please do attend if you’re able, it’s sure to be enlightening and educational.

New Hall Mill is open again this Sunday!

P1040438

New Hall Mill is a splendid place, restored and run by wonderfully dedicated volunteers.

Theres a lovely thing to visit locally this Sunday (13th August 2017), that’s close by, free and absolutely fascinating…

New Hall Mill is open again on Sunday for one of the last few open days of 2017. I can heartily recommend the place – it’s fascinating and I had a great time there on 2015 Spring Bank Holiday Monday – not enough people know about this wonderful building.

There’s also an appeal ongoing for people who may be interested to join the friends of New Hall Mill and help in all sorts of ways – the team need all kinds of expertise from guides to engineering types who may have time to spare. See the message at the door to the post.

The open day is free to enter too (although donations are welcomed).

The Friends of Newhall Mill said:

Hello Bob

There being only 3 more open days this year, “The Friends of New Hall Mill” will be opening the water mill to the public on Sunday August 13th. Come along and see flour being produced from wheat in the traditional way, have a go on a hand operated quern as still used in parts of the world today. Visit the gift shop, be entertained with Live music, see the many side stalls in the grounds and experience lovely walks alongside the streams and through the meadows.

There is an exhibition room and small tearoom selling cakes and beverages along with a garden shop where produce may be purchased from the millers garden. Don’t forget to visit Auntie Wainwrights to find that bargain that you always wanted.

Today’s entertainment will be supplied by The Lichfield Lighthouse Company at 13:15 & 14:30

In the cart shed will be a display of Large Steam Models

In the grounds there will be Displays & Demonstrations by –

  • The Laurel & Hardy Society
  • Bournville Bread Basket
  • Birmingham & The Black Country Wildlife Trust
  • Maidens Fayre
  • Helen’s Handmade Gifts
  • Queen of Cups
  • Lucy May’s Animal Days
  • Turner collection of Steam Models
  • Sutton Lace Makers
  • Creative Stitchers
  • Face Painting
  • Smoking Memorabilia (Matches, Cigars, Pipes)
  • Steam Models

… and individuals will be displaying their various collections

P1040417

I totally geeked out over this wonderful place.

A guided walk will take place at 11:15 (The History of the buildings at New Hall Mill) led by local historian Roger Lea. Mill walks last for approx 45 minutes.

Entry to the site and Parking is free, donations are always welcome in order that we raise funds to maintain the buildings for all to see in the future.

Please note that we open at 10:00 and close at 16:00 with last entry onto site being at 15:45.

Access to the mill is off Wylde Green Road, Sutton Coldfield, B76 1QU some 200 metres from National Cycle Route 534.

Having seen what we do, could you be able to assist? In order to continue holding these events, we need additional membership to help out on Open Days and Work Days. It is not all about Flour production – We have an ageing diesel engine to maintain, kitchen staff are always welcome, there are openings in all areas. Have a chat with a volunteer on Open day.

Hoping to see you there
Alan Dawson – A friend of New Hall Mill

More details can be found on their website – www.newhallmill.org.uk or their Facebook page here.

This is certainly a project worth visiting and supporting – please do pop along if you can.  You can check out a gallery of my photos taken there last year below. I had a great time.

See you in the distance, my old friend

In fond memory of Mark Blackstock, creator of The YamYam, without whom this blog would have died in infancy.

Mark sadly died following a heart attack on Thursday, 3rd August 2017 at the age of 55.

Mark, I owe you so very much. A friend in successful times, but also in the very dark, very small, very bleak hours. You were the thread that bound the Walsall online community together, though rarely visible within it.

The soul of discretion, the initiator of mischief.

I always thought I’d see you again.

Walsall has lost an adopted son, this blog has lost a godparent.

Rest in peace you old bugger.

I know you lived like you fucking meant it.

Somewhere, in the distance, we’ll have a pint again and bitch about professional PR, badly formatted RSS and the perils of being opinionated.

Goodbye old lad – you will always be here in my heart, in spirit.

Pensioner robbed by bogus workman in Bradbury Close, Shire Oak

Bradbury Close, Shire Oak. Many bogus callers can appear very plausible. Warn the elderly and vulnerable to be careful. Image from Apple Maps.

Partnerships officer Kevin Pitt has sent details of a worrying incident in the Shire Oak area last week (Wednesday, 2nd August 2017) when an OAP living in Bradbury Close, just off Pauls Coppice was robbed of £100 by a man claiming to be doing fencing work.

Kevin said:

A burglary has been reported in Shire Oak.

If you saw or heard anything or have any information about the below incident please call our non emergency number 101, quoting the reference number provided.

Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimetoppers-uk.org.

Details: The male offender has approached the house and knocked on the door. The victim has opened the door and been told by the offender that he had come to fix the fence and that he needed £100 to complete the work.  The money was handed over and the offender has left.  No work was completed.

The offender is described as a white man, aged around 45 years, around 5′ 10″ tall and of skinny build.  He wore a green baseball cap.

The Ugly Duckling puppet show on today at Brownhills Library

Everyone loves a goof fairy tale…

Sorry – this is belated notice of a great kids puppet theatre event going on today (Tuesday 8th August 2017) at Brownhills Library at the Parkview Centre, just on the Miner Island – a wonderful free performance of the perennial kids favourite The Ugly Duckling.

I believe the event is free (but if not it won’t cost much at all), and just the thing if you’ve got a bored wean stuck in the house on this awful wet day. Performances are at 10:30an and 2:30pm.

Sea Legs puppet theatre are a high quality, small touring children’s theatre company based in Hereford. They perform in theatres, schools and children’s events nationwide.

Brownhills Library said:

Float downstream with the Story Man, in Sea Legs Puppet Theatre’s gentle, musical adaptation of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic tale of belonging and identity.

Meet a host of colourful characters, as they run the troubled duckling out of the farmyard into a cold, lonely wilderness. Journey through the seasons as the hapless creature finds his way in a hostile world.

But do not worry! In a grand musical finale to melt even the coldest of hearts, a happy ending awaits our humble hero.

Set on the banks of a magical river, brilliant storytelling, fantastic puppets and a delightful new musical score make this a must see show for little ones and their families.

Performances at 10.30 a.m and 2.30 p.m

The event is open to all, so why not pop along to the Park View Centre and experience the magic of the Ugly Duckling?

Any voices from the beehive?

I’m fairly sure British Reinforced Concrete were the creators of the ‘Beehive’ system prefabs, common in Staffordshire like these at Hints Lane, Hopwas, many of which have now been re-skinned. Imagery from Google Streetview.

I’m on the cadge, please for information to help another historian who’s on the scent of something interesting, and could do with reader assistance if possible.

Peter ‘Pedro’ Cutler is interested in the history of The British Reinforced Concrete Company in Queensville, Stafford which appears to have wound down in the late 1980s.

Peter is after information as to the details of it’s closure, and anything related to their business operations, customers or workforce, particularly social history.

I have a feeling they may have suffered from bad publicity related to the failure of the system building boom in the postwar period, but can’t confirm this. Can anyone help, please?

If you can assist, please do comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

There’s this wonderful Aerofilms photo on Staffordshire Past Track with some details which may jog memories…

The notes on Staffordshire Past Track read:

Date:1936 – 1937 (c.)

Description:The British Reinforced Concrete Engineering Company manufactured reinforced concrete structures and made steel mesh for reinforcing concrete. The company moved from Manchester to Stafford in 1926, building a new factory in Queensville.

Business declined in the 1980s, and the factory closed in 1990.

Looking for Sheila Southall, formerly of Walsall Wood please

tumblr_nh5kowr8721qib2vgo2_1280

Walsall Wood: a fine place.

Hi folks –  this is one of those enquiries we get from time to time from readers.

I’m interested in contacting Sheila Southall, who used to live in Brownhills Road, Walsall Wood, and who now would be in her mid to late sixties.

Old friend Sylvia Harper would like to make contact with Sheila, who used to work in a local chemist’s shop. Sheila’s sisters Diane and Eileen were hairdressers who lived in Beechtree Road, Walsall Wood.

Sylvia sadly lost contact with Sheila in early 1970s and would love to make contact again.

There’s nothing wrong, and no need for concern, but if anyone knows Sheila and would be so good as to pass on my email address, I’d appreciate it. I will explain to them who’s looking and won’t share information without express permission.

BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Thanks
Bob

First FA Cup match of the season sees Wood win battle of Whits

Images and captions Kindly supplied by the young David Evans.

Well, a resurgent Walsall Wood, undimmed by their recent defeat by Aylestone triumphed over Whitchurch yesterday afternoon (Saturday, 5th August 2017)  to kickstart their FA Cup run for this season – Bill Shaw was there for the action, and submitted the following report.

Hiya Bob,

A cracking game played in the right spirit and Wood, or should I say Gary Birch opening his account with a win.

A great atmosphere generated by the good natured visiting fans reminded me what I’m going to miss, but my reports will be spasmodic this season, I won’t be at Cadbury Athletic on Saturday for instance, but will be at the Hinckley game away on Tuesday 15th, just down the road from me here.

Anyway, a great start to the season for everyone at the Wood.

F. A. Cup Extra Preliminary Round

Walsall Wood 3 v 1 Whitchurch Alport

The magic of the F.A. Cup came to the ML Safety Stadium and the two teams served up a typical blood and thunder encounter with a Paul Sullivan inspired Wood deservedly in the end going through to the next round.

The visitors with experienced striker Simon Everall involved in everything pushed Wood back from the start and after just six minutes Stephen McNichol came over halfway before feeding Everall wide right, he made the bye-line before cutting back and firing a vicious cross shot that gave keeper Lloyd Ransome no chance to put the visitors deservedly ahead, much to the delight of their vocal supporters.

Two minutes later a neat turn in midfield by Paul Sullivan saw him release Jordan Fitzpatrick into the left of the box, Nicholas Marley with a great saving tackle.

It was the visitors asking all the questions but nothing to show at this point.

Wood rode the storm and on 23 minutes Andrew Westwood crossed from the right, the ball fell to Louis Harris to hit first time, keeper Daniel Read with a great full length save. Two minutes later Everall reminded everyone how dangerous he could be, lovely close control on the left of the box saw him work a shooting chance, Ransome pushing away his rising drive.

Back came Wood, Sullivan crossed from wide left, Read pushed the ball off the head of Joey Butlin, Sullivan collected the loose ball on the left of the box but was crowded out by a posse of defenders. On 32 minutes Harris played the ball out wide right to Sullivan, he crossed to the near post, Butlin powering in a header that Read saved at the second attempt. Three minutes later a left wing corner was met by the head of Mitch Tolley, Read pushing the ball away at full stretch. A central free kick was collected by Sullivan, his flick deflected wide. Wood deservedly got back on terms on 43 minutes, Harris won the ball on halfway and fed Sullivan who ran on before releasing Tony Clarke into the left of the box, he went down under a clumsy challenge, penalty. Sullivan making no mistake from the spot. It was all Wood now and right on the break a scramble developed in the box, Harris pounced to fire in a low drive, Butlin touching the ball home from close range.

Wood controlled the game at the start of the second half and on 56 minutes Read made another great save to deny Butlin. Three minutes later a clever chip over the Wood defence released substitute Ben Mill into the centre of the box, as Ransome came to meet him he lobbed the ball wide.

On 67 minutes McNichol powered through the centre and set up Luke Goddard, Ransome out quickly and bravely to save at his feet. Four minutes later Sullivan collected the ball on the left of the box, his superb close control saw him cut inside past 2 defenders and calmly put Wood into the next round.

A further four minutes on Michael Blundell delivered a left wing corner that landed on the roof of the net, giving Ransome kittens in the process. On 85 minutes a long high ball into the box was read superbly by Lewis Taylor Boyce, Read saving bravely at his feet.

The visitors had the last word, a superb crossfield ball by Mills found Luke Walley who fired a first time effort just wide.

A cracking cup tie, a good crowd and a great atmosphere. Wood deserved the win but they could never relax as skipper Simon Everall was always dangerous.

Wood open their league account on Saturday with a visit to Cadbury Athletic before travelling away to Hinckley on Tuesday 15th, not easy games by any means.

Do you remember Joan and Les Jackson?

Old friend of the blog Andy Dennis has asked if I’d share his quest to find out what became of local artist Joan Jackson and her husband Les who lived near Newtown, Brownhills: A painting created by Joan hangs in Stonnall church and one of Andy’s readers, Wendy Cooke, is trying to find out more about this talented and accomplished artist who was a friend of Andy’s parents.

Joan has previously been mentioned in several posts on Andy’s blog.

This is yet another great article on Andy’s fascinating blog, which I commend to all readers with an interest not just in local history but wider genealogy too.

If you can help Andy and Wendy, please do: As a random suggestion, has anyone tried Walsall Society of Artists who may well have known Joan?

Andy Dennis wrote:

A remarkable and beautiful picture by a lost local artist. Can you help find out what became of Joan and her work? Image originally posted on Andrews Kindred by Andy Dennis.

This original oil painting was based on a photograph, probably black and white, taken before Joan and her husband were forced to move after the house was condemned in about 1967.

Recently, I received a request from Wendy Cooke, who wrote:

I am interested in finding out about a picture of St Peter’s Church Stonnall painted by a Joan Jackson of Brownhills and which hangs in the vestry of St. Peter’s Church, Stonnall.

I am doing voluntary work as a Church Recorder for NADFAS (National Society for Decorative and Fine Arts). I would be interested in finding out any History about the artist and her work.

I have looked on the internet and came across your website.

Thank you in anticipation.

I don’t know very much about Joan, as we visited infrequently, and I tended to gravitate more towards her husband, Les.

What do I think I know?

The birth of Joan Davies was registered in the first quarter of 1920 at Cannock, Staffordshire, indicating date of birth in that quarter or towards the end of 1919, though I believe a period of six months was allowed.  From recollection, Joan was local to Brownhills, so she was probably born somewhere north of Watling Street and west of Howdles Lane.  The precise date and location could be found out by obtaining a copy of the Entry of Birth from the General Register Office (GRO), reference:  1920 Jan-Feb-Mar Cannock 6b 1193.

In the spring of 1946 Joan married Leslie Albert Jackson (GRO ref:  1946 Apr-May-Jun Cannock 6b 1171).  After marrying, Joan and Les moved into number 43 Chapel Street, generally known as the back lane, which I believe Les had inherited from his grandmother.

Les (1919-1996) was an engineer of some considerable ability and was suitably rewarded by his employer Parsons, for whom he designed, among other things, turbines for generating electricity in power stations.  As a hobby, he also made astronomical telescopes, including the lenses, from scratch. While there they were close friends with my parents and together they would go dinghy sailing, walk on Cannock Chase, and play cards, a favourite being canasta.

Joan, I think I recall, had some kind of office job that was also quite well paid, so, having no children and no mortgage, they were comfortably off, though ostentation was not their thing. Joan was relatively tall, slender and had fair hair, which she always wore short: definitely a practical sort, but although she stood for little nonsense, always seemed warm and friendly.

There were no children, and I never knew anything about family on either side.

As I recall it, Joan only took up painting upon retirement, probably in 1985.  By then they had moved to 9 Watling Street, at the eastern corner of Watling Street, Dawes Lane, just down from Knaves Castle.  I only went there a few times, the last when Joan was rather tipsy, but I do remember there was a wall covered with her works, all framed by Les.  They included landscapes, among which were several in Wales, local scenes and still life. After that we lost touch and when I enquired someone else was living at 9 Watling Street, but they were unable to say what happened to them.

I am reasonably confident that Les died aged 77 in 1996 (GRO ref: 1996 Oct Walsall A52A 0751A 84).

What became of Joan, or her paintings, or, indeed, Les’s telescopes, I have no idea.

So, does anyone know more?  If you can help, please contact me through the contact page, or directly to andrewskindred at gmail dot com.

Aylestone nail ailing Wood

Aylestone Park FC are a great Leicester club! Image from Steve the Groundhopper.

I was surprised and delighted when yesterday this match report from last Saturday’s (29th July 2017) Walsall Wood away friendly against Aylestone Park FC dropped into my mailbox from the theoretically retired football correspondent Bill Shaw.

Sadly, it wasn’t the match result the faithful were hoping for, but you can’t win them all… And as ever, Bill’s observations are compelling and forthright.

He wrote:

Hiya Bob,

Sorry about the delay in getting this to you but we had a breakdown in communication, something like what happened to Wood in the second half of this game.

I’m just keeping my hand in but will be there Saturday for the FA Cup game.

Aylestone Park 3 v 1 Walsall Wood

A first ever Wood goal by Daniel Okojie had put them ahead at the break but it should have been five or six. Two absolutely super strikes by Santos in the 46th and 64th minutes put the home side ahead before Joel Porter wrapped things up with the third goal in the 85th minute.

After only five minutes Santos popped up in the centre of the D, his rising first time effort bringing a great save from Wood keeper Lloyd Ransome.

Wood started to put the home defence under a bit of pressure but it took until 20 minutes for a Craig Deakin effort to bring a superb save from home keeper Conor Middleton. Five minutes later Daniel Okojie wide left crossed to the far post, the ball evaded everyone and nestled in the far corner of the net. On 35 minutes a right wing corner by Peter Till was delivered beyond the far post, Louis Harris powering a header back across goal, Middleton making a superb acrobatic stop. A great crossfield ball into the right of the box by Deakin put Tony Clarke in on goal only for Middleton to deny him with a brave block.  Then Till fired in a rising drive from 30 yards that Middleton finger-tipped onto the bar, Joey Butlin and Clarke running in to put the loose ball away, only for it to fly over their heads.

Within a minute of the restart the hosts were level, a ball inside from Nick Coleford found Santos 25 yards out, he took one touch and his sweet strike flew into the top right hand corner with Ransome rooted to the spot.

On 55 minutes an intricate Wood move ended with Butlin fouled on the edge of the D, Tills free kick beat Middleton but bounced to safety off the bar.

A carbon copy of their first goal put the home side ahead on 64 minutes, Santos again with another peach of an effort.

Two minutes later from a right wing corner Chris Slater powered in a header that was blocked on the line with Middleton again beaten.  A further three minutes later from another right wing corner Callum Macfarlane saw his header comfortably held by Middleton. Wood kept going forward but couldn’t break down a resolute defence.

With five minutes left Joel Porter got on the end of a right wing cross to power a header home. On 89 minutes a ball over the top into the left of the box was collected at pace by Santos, Ransome denying him his hat-trick with a great save.

It wasn’t the end to the friendly programme Wood would have wanted but they’d had chances to put the game beyond the home side before Santos took a hand with his two superb strikes.

It’s the magic of the F.A. Cup next Saturday at home as the season starts for real.  The league season starts on Saturday 12th August, with a visit to Cadbury Athletic, never an easy place to go to.

Bill Shaw.

The Teams:

Aylestone Park – Middleton, Batson, Holmes, Neat, Hulley, Tyres, Daley, Coleford, Yusef, Haycock, Santos, Armsden, Donehy, Porter, Conkay.

Walsall Wood – Ransome, Okojie, Deakin, Tolley, Campion (c), Craddock, Till, L. Harris, Butlin, Clarke, Westwood, Macfarlane, H. Harris, Slater.

Thanks so much to Bill for the report, alway appreciated – for the good of The Wood!

Car vandalised on the Hussey Estate last Thursday night

The Hussey Estate is normally a peaceful corner of Brownhills. Image kindly shared by Steve Martin.

Worrying news from a good pal of the blog Simon who lives on the Hussey Estate in Brownhills – on Thursday night (3rd August 2017) he had his car vandalised, with two tires punctured and the paintwork keyed.

Simon said:

Hi Bob.

Not sure whether you want to put a message on the blog but I’ve woken up this morning to find my car has been key scratched and two tyres sabotaged meaning I have to get replacements.

Parked outside by house on the Hussey Estate and clearly deliberate damage.

Simon

Simon would like to warn other readers about this and is enquiring to see if anyone else suffered similar damage? The Hussey Estate is normally a peaceful place and this seems unusual to me – the damage has cost nearly £500 and seems pointless and unwarranted.

This is a fairly unusual local development and it really does need nipping in the bud as soon as possible. Anyone with information on this particular incident or any others is urged to contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or you can speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Anyone know who owns Birch Coppice?

Birch Coppice is all that remains of woodland that once stretched all the way to the old railway at Engine Lane, but was obliterated by the clay pit. Imagery from Bing! Maps.

I’ve had a really interesting enquiry in from reader Luke Statham, who’s a geocacher and would like to place some caches in Birch Coppice, the woodland that sits behind the Hussey Estate off Coppice Lane, Brownhills, wedged in there between the old railway at the back of the Potclays former landfill site.

Luke wrote:

Good Morning Bob,

I’m reaching our for your help if possible. I’m trying to find out who owns the woodland behind my grandad’s house in Albion Road, Brownhills. I have attached a map showing the area. I wondered with your local knowledge, whether you would know who the land belongs too? I’m not sure whether it is privately owned or owned by Walsall Council.

The reason for my query is, myself, wife and son are into Geocaching – and we would like to place some caches around the area. Before placing we have to sought permission from the land owner first. Walsall Council, do sound quite obliging towards Geocachers but i’m not sure if they own this piece of land?

Hope that you can help.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
Luke Statham

I’ll be absolutely honest here: I have no idea whatsoever. I don’t believe it’s the council, as I’ve never seen it referred to by the Greenspaces team, nor have I ever seen the area maintained by them; for my money it’s either owned by Potclays (see their site here) or Wallace Estates of Little Wyrley, who I believe own much of the common between Brownhills and Lime Lane.

This one’s a bit of a faff to try the Land Registry, so if anyone knows that would be a real help cheers.

Thanks to Luke for a really interesting question – if you can help, please do. Either comment here or mail me: BorwnhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Teenager David McGregor missing from Brownhills: Have you seen him?

Image from Birmingham Mail with the original caption ‘David McGregor, missing from Brownhills (Image: West Midlands Police)’

There’s an unusual appeal been ongoing since yesterday afternoon (Wednesday, 2nd August 2017) published in the Birmingham Mail; teenage lad David McGregor has apparently been missing from his home in Brownhills since Tuesday, July 25th 2017.

The appeal is unusual in that the only places it’s been published so far is the Birmingham Mail here, a short piece here in the Advertiser here and on the Missing People Charity website here – I can’t see it on any West Midlands Police social media.

The Birmingham Mail said:

Police are appealing for help to find a teenage boy who has been missing for more than a week.

David McGregor left his home in Brownhills at around 10.45am on Tuesday, July 25. He has not been seen since.

The 16-year-old is described as 5ft 8in tall, of slim build with short, light brown hair.

He was last seen wearing a black bomber style jacket, black jeans and white trainers.

Anyone with information about David’s whereabouts is urged to contact West Midlands Police on 101.

Alternatively you can contact the Missing People charity on 116 000, quoting reference number 17-004195.

If you have seen David, or know where he is please call West Midlands Police on 101 or the Missing People charity on 116 000 immediately on 101.

Chasewater Railway – Annual Charities Day this Sunday!

Always a great day out!

Chasewater Railway – the little gem of a local preserved industrial railway is this Sunday (6th August 2017) staging it’s Annual Charities Day, when the railway will be operating with steam trains, and there will be charity stalls and activities at Brownhills West Station.

The Charities Day is always great fun and a good way to find out what local groups are up to – as well as to enjoy fun and games for all the family, explore the working railway and Country Park it runs in.

Chasewater Railway is a wonderful attraction with regular passenger services at weekends and during school holidays, featuring two excellent cafes and a fascinating museum that chronicles not just railway history, but that of our area and industry.

The whole thing is staffed by helpful and friendly volunteers who are always ready to chat and talk about the railway and rolling stock.

At Brownhills west station there are also a lovely model railway, plus a couple of great vintage and collectible stalls. The railway itself has a shop selling books, rail models, toys and other merchandise.

Please do pop down if you haven’t already – Chasewater Railway really isn’t pushed enough; it’s wonderful.

You can check their website here – trains run this and every weekend from 11am to 4pm with the museum, cafes and stations open earlier.

Meet your local coppers in Pelsall and Rushall!

Just walking’ the dog. Achieve image from Walsall Police.

I received notice of another couple of useful ‘Meet the public’ popup events via the excellent WMNow service a few days ago – one tonight in Pelsall and another tomorrow in Rushall – these are great initiatives where you can meet your local policing team and get help, crime prevention and public safety advice.

The events will be at the Spar shop in Pelsall this evening (Wednesday 2nd August 2017) from 6pm-8pm and at MacDonalds, Rushall tomorrow (Thursday 3rd August 2017) from 7pm-9pm.

Since Pelsall, Rushall and Brownhills share the same policing team, this is a good chance for anyone from our area to meet the local policing team.

I must say, it’s good to see the local police making continuous efforts to reach out to the public. Long overdue.

Also, if you haven’t signed up for WMNow, please do – it’s free and you can select to receive alerts on all kinds of local issues. It’s a fine thing.

Concerned about local crime issues? Meeting this Wednesday in Rushall

Rushall Community Centre is just off the Lichfield Road at Rushall Square. Imagery from Apple Maps.

In light of recent events, there’s a very interesting meeting taking place at 7:30pm this coming Wednesday, 2nd August 2017 – that of Rushall, Sheffield and Pelsall Neighbourhood Watch – and there’s a specific invitation to Brownhills residents.

The meeting takes place at the Springfields Community Centre, 10 Springfields, Rushall, WS4 1JX – just off the A461 at Rushall Square.

With recent concerns about local crime and ongoing antisocial behaviour issues – this could be your chance to get your voice heard. If you’ve been unhappy with recent police performance, this would be a good forum at which to raise that, or any other related issue you may have.

Kevin Pitt, the Walsall Police Partnerships Officer, sent out the following:

Bob

This message is to update you with what is going on with neighbourhood watch in your area.

Neighbourhood watch works best when it is organised and led by the residents, so with this in mind a well-organised local group, Rushall, Shelfield and Pelsall Neighbourhood Watch, have offered to step in and help revitalise neighbourhood watch in Brownhills.  This makes sense as Brownhills is covered by the same policing team as Rushall, Shelfield and Pelsall.

The next meeting of the Rushall, Shelfield and Pelsall group is to be held this Wednesday, 2nd August, at Springfields Community Centre in Rushall, starting at 7.30pm.  Any residents of Brownhills who wish to attend will be most welcome.

I understand that a meeting for Brownhills is to be organised soon, however as you will appreicate this requires willingness from and participation by local residents and businesses.  If you would like to take part, or have more information, please contact Mr Michael Styles on m.styles1@btopenworld.com or pass me your details and I will ask him to contact you.  Michael is a volunteer member of the community who has many years experience in neighbourhood watch.

Working together we can delvelop a strong neighbourhood watch group in Brownhills.

With best wishes.

Kevin.

Kevin Pitt (Police Staff, Partnerships Engagement Officer, Walsall)

Please, if you go along, do let me and the readers know what happened – either by commenting here, or mailing me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Car accident causing delays, Pelsall Road

Update 5:45pm – Thanks to reader Scott for letting us know that traffic on the Pelsall Road is now moving freely.

However, old pal of the blog Barry Carpenter has posted that there’s been a serious RTA in Aldridge:

Massive RTA just now corner Anchor Meadow Leighswood Road. 31/07/2017 approx. 17.30 hrs please avoid if possible.

Thanks for all the info, and people, be careful out there.

Cheers
Bob

The scene of the accident. Image kindly supplied by Vicky Devine.

Late this afternoon Monday 31st July 2017, there has been a road traffic accident between two cars at the junction of Pelsall Road and Coppice Side, Brownhills.

Considerable delays are building up in the area, which is best avoided.

It appears that an Audi collided with a Vauxhall Meriva at the junction, hitting a telegraph pole in the process. This has caused a local loss of telephone and broadband connections.

Emergency services have been in attendance and there are not currently thought to be any serious injuries.

Thanks to the divine Vicky for the tipoff.

Have you seen this Calibre Bossnut bike stolen from Shire Oak?

Do you know someone riding a recently acquired Calibre Bossnut bike? One’s been stolen in Shire Oak last weekend.

Yesterday, Sunday 30th July 2017 Shire Oak resident Dave Fenton has reported that the above Calibre Bossnut bike was stolen from his shed sometime over the weekend.

Dave wrote:

Shed thieves out again in Shire Oak. Anyone offered a Calibre Bossnut cheap let the police know. It’s red hot.

The bike was stolen sometime between Friday night and Sunday. The picture is the exact bike. Hardly used. Only 9 months old. Chester Road, Shire Oak near the former Royal (‘Middle Oak’) pub. Second time. done too years ago.

Many thanks.

You can contact Dave on Facebook here.

If you know someone that’s suddenly pitched up with a bike matching that description that you feel could be the one in question, please do contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Frequented by cats?

Catshill today is a built up, urban area. Image from Pete Hummings.

A few weeks ago I posted a remarkable and very popular post by the young David Evans about a lost Methodist Chapel that was located in Catshill – possibly the first such place of worship in Brownhills – that provoked a large amount of discussion about the Catshill area itself.

I’ve been meaning to post ever since this rumination on the area by noted local historian Sir Gerald of Reece, who wrote the definitive work on our town’s history, ‘Brownhills, a walk into history’ – it’s a small piece that raises as many questions as answers about Catshill and I think it’s a great discussion piece for a Sunday.

Gerald here has actually corrected a misconception of mine – I always thought FH Gordon was the brickworks at Walsall Wood Colliery, which is clearly incorrect – so we do indeed learn something new every day.

If Sir Gerald is reading this (and I hope he is) thanks for a great article from what is a wonderful book and I hope you’re keeping well. There will always be a pint in the Hills for you old chap, and I can assure you the debating society is still going strong and as purse-lipped as ever, whatever the weather.

I’m sure some of you will have something to say – particularly on the Cutha postulation. This is persistent through local folklore and was even immortalised in the Brownhills Urban District Council Crest, the orgins or which are somewhat… open to debate.

You know the drill – comment here, or mail me: BorwnhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

CATSHILL

Image from ‘Brownhills: A walk into history’ by Gerald Reece.

From Ogley Road to the Anchor Bridge the area on both sides of the High Street was known as Catshill in Under or Lower Stonnal in the Parish of Shenstone. The Common and Waste lands here were Inclosed in 1811.

Image from ‘Brownhills: A walk into history’ by Gerald Reece.

A small area of land adjoining the canal on High Street side was known as Catshill in Walsall Wood in the Township of Walsall Foreign. The common and waste lands of Walsall Wood were inclosed in 1876. Shire Oak Common had been inclosed previous to this by John Smyth, Lord of the Manor, with the consent of the freeholders.

Catshill is the oldest inhabited area of Brownhills. Much speculation has been made concerning the origin of its name. Take your pick from the following authoritative accounts:-

  • Catshill or Canutes Hill, here were two barrows (burial mounds) of Roman or British
    construction.
  • The Tumuli is Prehistoric.
  • Cutha, an Anglo-Saxon Chief, is buriedhere. He was the brother of Caewlin, King of
Wessex. He was killed in battle in 594 AD.
  • The brother of Caewlin is buried here,he was killed in the battle of Cutha.
    Cattshill or Cutteslowe or Catteslowe.
  • Catshill was a hill frequented by cats.

The remains of the ancient inclosure and any burial mounds that may have existed were destroyed in 1797 when the Wyrley and Essington Canal cut through the area.

At Catshill Bridge the Wyrley and Essington Canal forks. The right branch is the Hay Head Extension that passes through the Brickyards of Walsall Wood and the Limestone Workings at Daw End before joining the Tame Valley Canal at Rushall Junction. This forms a 21 mile circuitous route via Wolverhampton. Near to Catshill Bridge was the Canal Toll Post. The following charges were suggested when the Canal opened in 1797:

Image from ‘Brownhills: A walk into history’ by Gerald Reece.

Although it is outside the bounds of Catshill, The Brownhills Brick Works merit a mention. It stood near to the present Clayhanger Bridge and had loading wharves at the canal side. Amongst its products was a building brick with a distinctive impression.

Image from ‘Brownhills: A walk into history’ by Gerald Reece.

Francis Harry Gordon was the entrepreneur who established the Brick Works here in the 1870’s. He also had other business interests in North Staffordshire. The Brick Works covered an area of 7 acres. The large crater made during the excavation of the clay can still be seen. The clay measure here was 30 ft. thick. The buildings of the works included three drying sheds, the largest one measured 150 ft. x 30 ft. and had a cast iron plated floor.

There were three 7 holed burning kilns, two dwelling houses and an Engine and Mill House. The machinery and plant included a Cornish Steam Boiler measuring 20 ft. X 6 ft. 3 ins. A Horizontal High Pressure Steam Engine with a 16 ins. Cylinder. This had a stroke of 2 ft. 10 ins. And a 9 ft. Fly-wheel. There were also two Capital Cameron Steam Pumps and a Brick Cutting-Off machine.

The Brick Works were closed down in 1896, its trade had been undercut by the neighbouring Walsall Wood Colliery Brick Works. After several abortive attempts to reopen the Works as a going concern it was finally sold for its plant and machinery by William F. Gordon, J.P. of Lichfield, he was the son of Francis Harry. Many buildings in the area can be dated from their usage of F. H. GORDON bricks.

A life on the Hill…

The bungalow at Sandhills still clings on today, just in the former access road to the quarry, but surely isn’t long for the world now – Image Kindly supplied by Ian Broad.

Earlier in the week, I featured a lovely piece about the long gone carpet shop in Brownhills High Street that stood where Wilkinson is today called Tom’s Cabin, by old friend of the blog Ian Broad – in that article, I noted Ian had some other images and memories to share of the (still derelict) old bungalow at the old driveway to Shire Oak Quarry, on the A461 near Sandhills, Shire Oak.

Ian has previously discussed this sad, lost bungalow in a previous article, which has generated a lot of interest on the blog. Ian now elaborates on this with some remarkable images – look out for the kitten which has all the cute!

Ian wrote:

Hi Bob,

Well I found some old pics from 1974 showing the garden at the back of the old bungalow. My dad grew loads of veg there and built a greenhouse too. There was an old mushroom shed that was in a pretty bad state. We later rebuilt it.

Ian’s father and grandfather working hard in the garden, Image Kindly supplied by Ian Broad.

You can see the ‘pathways’ In the pic described in a previous email.

The gardens must have been incredible when first done, it was multi level with intricate pathways. The gardens stretched all the way to where the quarry started. I’d say it was prob a good 100 yds long.

‘Here a better view from the old bungalow driveway, looking out over the fields towards Lichfield. This is me and my little bro Jonathan with his new kitten. I obviously didn’t want my photo taken!’ – Image Kindly supplied by Ian Broad.

The same was mirrored at the front right side of the house and extended all the way to Lichfield Rd. In fact there was a gate on Lichfield Rd with a number 28 on it. We never got round to restoring beyond the lawn area there.

That looks like a brilliant garden to play in. Image Kindly supplied by Ian Broad.

In the pic only the first part is ‘restored’.

When we moved in there were 6ft high brambles from the walk of the house. Nothing you see in the pic was visible.

My mum and dad and gran and grandad are in the pic. I think I took the pics. Look at the little tractor, my little brothers’.  No steering wheel just a spike where it was – no ‘health and safety’ in the 70s!

Ian

Cheers to Ian for some great images and lovely memories – if you can add anything to this history, or remember those day, please don’t hesitate to comment here or mail me – BorwnhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers!

Ian said ‘Here’s the view from the driveway of the old bungalow. The lawn, gardens that extended up to Lichfield Rd are on the left. Sorry, view is obscured by the car and my bike.’   That’s a lovely steed. Whenever I see road bikes from the 70s and 80s the huge fork rake always surprises me – Image Kindly supplied by Ian Broad.

Ian Neville: A true local hero!

Ian Neville is surely worthy of a local hero award. Image from the Pride of Britain website.

Anyone from Brownhills or the surrounding area will know local fundraiser, poet and character Ian Neville – well, this is an invitation from Ian’s friend Pete Sutton, who’s suggested we all nominate Ian for the Pride of Birmingham 2018 awards, in recognition of his fundraising efforts.

Ian works hard for a number of charities, particularly the Midlands Air Ambulance and the local Remembrance Parade Appeal. You’ll all remember Ian’s book of poetry he compiled for charity, and of events like his sponsored bike ride into Birmingham on the canal.

A great national recognition scheme for people working hard in the community.

I think Ian is highly deserving of this award, and agree wholeheartedly with Pete, who said:

Ladies and Gentlemen of Brownhills…

I have today nominated Ian NEV Neville for a Pride of Britain local hero award.

For those that don’t know Nev and his commitment to charity work and local causes, then please check out his Facebook page here.

Please follow this link here, nominate Nev and lets get this guy the recognition and reward that his selfless efforts deserve

So if you can, please spare a minute to nominate this great Brownhills lad, and let’s see Ian’s hard work and careless effort recognised.

Don’t forget Ian’s book of poetry is still available too!

A local voice that deserves to be heard

I admire Linda’s writing: Unflincing, straight up and to the point.

It’s time, I think for one of my period posts to draw attention to the excellent, incisive and beautifully written work of fellow local blogger and old online pal Linda Mason, aka The Mad Old Baggage.

Linda has written a couple of blog posts recently that I think are worth reading if you have any interest in local, current affairs. I’m sure readers will be aware that following a sudden rash of serious crime in Aldridge including bank robberies and the tragic, awful murder of James Brindley there has been a great deal of concern about law and order in the area, with a particular focus on policing.

To this end, there has been a very well attended community meeting at Aldridge Community Centre which was very professionally organised; there has also been much discussion, particularly on Facebook. Linda wrote up her experience of the meeting, and some of her views upon it, to a generally positive reception, although the article appeared to cause disquiet in some quarters.

That post is well worth a read. and you can read it by clicking here.

In the context of this, and of Linda’s other current concern, the proposed sundial on The Croft, Linda has written a subsequent post about the nature of community, activism and the general community conversation, and those who seek to represent us and out views. I commend this to anyone with an interest in democracy and community.

Years ago, what seems to be a lifetime ago, I wrote the following of politicians, and appointed ‘community leaders’, those who I saw as self-appointed or otherwise:

Remember, none of these people were elected by a majority of their constituents; they are mostly complete amateurs and make decisions about how to spend large amounts of your cash, with little experience of development. We need to keep an eye on what they’re up to.

Whilst this clumsy, lumbering paragraph hasn’t become any more elegant over time (like my writing skills, which if anything have worsened) the sentiment remains true: Democracy and accountability are key to community harmony, and that means involving everyone we can when listening to, and speaking for our communities and not just serving the people in our immediate audience.

I salute anyone working for the community, particularly those working hard to heal and address community concerns in Aldridge and understand how hard it is, but like Linda posits, that doesn’t come without responsibilities and some concerns.

Read Linda’s wonderfully eloquent piece by clicking here, and whilst you may or may not agree you will. I feel, acknowledge that it’s a thought provoking, sharply observed piece of work that requires consideration.

Linda remains one of the best local writers and I stand with her in the view she expressed here. It’s great when communities come together, and that’s the way to effect change. But we must be considerate, accountable and democratic in our approach, and above all, totally open.

The Grove Colliery – remembering a lost pit

A drone shot of the last remains of the Grove Colliery off Lime Lane. Image kindly shared by Steve Martin.

Last year I featured a very popular set of images from a place I genuinely didn’t realise still existed: The Grove Colliery, the remnants of which – the house and offices situated just off Lime Lane, between Pelsall, Brownhills, Norton and Great Wyrley – were documented by old pal off the blog Simon Swain and posted here as a gallery I include below.

Since then, drone wizard Steve Martin also captured the site from the air.

The Grove was one of the last collieries around Brownhills to go, and many local people worked there and were involved with it and the Harrison empire that ran it for so many years. Memories of this colliery are always bittersweet, as it was the site of the notorious 1930 disaster in which 14 men were lost.

In 2015 I posted a gallery of images of the Grove Colliery and surrounds, taken in the late 1950s and held in the Canal and River Trust archive – so those images have a waterways slant to them.

You may wonder why I’m returning to this now: Well, I’ve been contacted by reader Julie Smith who has strong family connections to the Grove and is seeking more information and maybe access to the remaining buildings, so I’m opening this to readers to see what you know.

Julie said:

Dear Bob,

Good afternoon

I was reading your blog about the above dated 24/4/16 where Simon Swain posted some photos of my nan and grandads old house! I have recently been in touch with Norton Canes Parish Council, as my grandparents lived in the house in Lime Lane for many years. Indeed I have many very happy memories of staying there in the school holidays in the 70’s.

The NCPC have had recent meetings regarding an historic building on Lime Lane known to them as the old Harrisons Building.  I think this could be  the house where my oldies lived; the house has office buildings and a kind of another house attached to the back of the house where they lived.  Also there is the weighbridge building and some other houses further along the canal side site that remain.

It is the house where my oldies lived that interests me. I drive past every day on my way to work and would dearly love to get into the house again to take a look round.  I don’t think anyone has lived there since my grandad died in 1977 and it would be interesting to see if any of their things remain in there.

Any other information that you have about the ownership of these buildings would be so gratefully received.

Thank you
Kind Regards
Julie Smith

I’m not certain, but I think the Wallace Estate may own the site. Can anyone help with that, or a contact pease?

Thanks to Julie for a remarkable and interesting enquiry!

If you have anything to add, please feel free: comment here or mail me. You know by know – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Great local history talk coming this Monday!

This is not to be missed. If I were not at work, I’d be there.

I’d like to share the following event with readers that takes place this coming Monday (31st July 2017) at Aldridge Library – an illustrated talk on Passchendaele and it’s local connections by Aldridge Great War historians Sue Satterthwaite and Len Boulton.

Aldridge Library said:

On Monday 31st July, 10.30am Aldridge Library will host a special event to coincide with the 100th Anniversary of the Third Battle of Passchendaele –  an illustrated talk by Sue Satterthwaite and Len Boulton of the Aldridge Great War Project which will consider the moving stories of local people who took part in the battle.

These two historians are remarkable in both knowledge and dedication, and the talk is sure to be fascinating. It takes place at Aldridge Library in Rookery Lane and starts at 10:30am. The talk is free, but booking is advised: either call in or phone 01922 655569.

Once again I am indebted to Linda Mason, who drew my attention to this and who, with regard to other matters has written a couple of really important blog posts in the last few weeks, which I shall address over the coming weekend. Stay tuned.

Good news – Brownhills High Street and Miner Island to be resurfaced

The A461 Brownhills High Street is a busy, heavily used road. Good to see it finally getting some love. Archive image from 365days.

Thanks to top bloke and local Councillor Steve Wade who’s sent me copies of letters to residents, I can share the news that throughout August, with Brownhills High Street and the Miner Island and it’s junctions will be resurfaced.

This is great news as both have been in a bad state for a very long time and I’m pleased particularly that the potholes the island will be sorted at last.

All work will take place overnight between the hours of 8pm-6am to minimise disruption, which will be a bit awkward for residents, but noisy work is to be kept to pre-midnight schedules where possible.

No work will take place at weekends.

The first package of work on the island on the Chester Road side will run from 1st-7th August 2017, with the second batch on the Pelsall Road side from 8th-11th August 2017.

The work on High Street will be from Tuesday 15th August to Friday 25th August 2017.

I have included the letter to residents below – don’t hesitate to contact the man in charge, Gary Chalk with any enquires or questions. You can call Gary on (01922) 654393 or email him hereGary.chalk@walsall.gov.uk.

I must say I welcome the current road improvements and resurfacing work throughout Walsall. it’s very much overdue. My thanks to the Council for finally getting a handle on it.

Overnights for a couple of weeks in August, this chap will be watching over heavy machinery. Wonder if they’ll borrow his pickaxe? Archive image from 365days.

Dear Resident / Business

Carriageway Resurfacing Work: A452 Tin Man roundabout Brownhills.

Walsall MBC is to carry out carriageway resurfacing at the above location as part of its highway maintenance programme. The works have been organised by the Council’s Highways Maintenance Group and will be carried out by Tarmac Ltd.

The aim of the work is to strengthen the road construction and provide a new running surface along with all the associated road markings. The planned works will make use of modern surfacing materials, which will reduce road noise and spray.

To ensure the safety of our employees and the general public the above work will be carried out in two phases by completing work on one half of the roundabout at a time.

Phase 1: B4155 Lichfield Road Side of Roundabout.

The roundabout will be closed at its junction with Chester Road North and Lichfield Road.
Traffic will be diverted to access the roundabout from A4124 Pelsall Road and A452 High St.

Temporary traffic signals will be in operation to manage vehicles across the roundabout.

Please beware that The Parade will also be closed at its junction with Chester Road North due to the resurfacing extending a short distance along the Chester Road North during this phase.

Work will commence on Tuesday 1st August to Monday 7th August 2017 from 8.00pm to 06.00am

No work is planned to be carried out at weekends, however this may be subject to change to ensure that we meet the target finish date.

Phase 2 A4124 Pelsall Road side of Roundabout.

The roundabout will be closed at is its junction with A4124 Pelsall Road. Traffic will be diverted to access the roundabout from A452 Chester Road North, B4155 Lichfield Road and A452 High St Brownhills.

Temporary traffic signals will be in operation to manage vehicles across the roundabout

Work will commence on Tuesday 8th August to Friday 11th August 2017 from 8.00pm to 06.00am.

No work is planned to be carried out at weekends, however this may be subject to change to ensure that we meet our ongoing maintenance programme.

Our aim is carry out the more disruptive and noisier part of our operation, i.e. removing the existing carriageway surface from 8.00pm to 12 midnight, with the much quieter operation of laying the new surface taking place from midnight onwards. We will endeavour to complete the work within the given time scale, providing that weather conditions are favourable.

Access for emergency services will be maintained at all times where possible.

Every effort will be made to ensure noise pollution is kept to a minimum, we would ask for your understanding and co-operation to allow the works to be carried out safely. If you should have any queries or anticipate problems caused by the works please contact Gary Chalk on the above telephone number.

As the sun sets, work will begin. Unpleasant while it lasts, but the benefit should be worthwhile. Archive image from 365days.

Beware folks – roadworks with temporary lights causing delays in Walsall Wood

Walsall Wood High Street – could be tricky today. Archive image from 365days.

Thanks to the press folks at Walsall Council for flagging this one up this afternoon – sadly I’m only just able to post it on the blog, but there will be temporary traffic signals operating on the A461 Walsall Wood High Street today (Thursday, 27th July 2017).

They will be functional by 9:30am and will continue throughout the day, for as long as they are needed to allow an emergency culvert repair.

I’m not sure how or if this work will impact the resurfacing going on here at nights currently, but it’s good to see them digging it up before, not after the new surface is laid.

It’s possible delays will be caused to peak time journeys, so if you can avoid the area on the way home, it’s suggested you do so.

Sorry for the late notice.

Hot off the press unit at Walsall Council.

Tom’s Cabin: from thatches to rugs!

I remember Tom’s Cabin well. To the other side of the arch was a pet shop for a while, AH Taxis and Alpha Sports I think. Image kindly supplied by Ian Broad.

Way back. six years way back, I wrote about the (still derelict) old bungalow at the old driveway to Shire Oak Quarry, just of Shire Oak Hill on the A461 near Sandhills, and was interested in the history of this sad, lost home; several folk got in touch and a whole thread emerged about life in the bungalow from Ian Broad, intertwined with the history of his father’s shop in Brownhills, Tom’s Cabin.

Toms Cabin, a carpet shop in the spot formerly occupied by Ladies Hairdresser May Brown was run by Ian’s father. May was, of course, wife of noted barber Tommy Brown who used to operate from a shed in the back yard of May’s shop.

I’m glad to say Ian has been in touch again over the last few days an supplied some wonderful images of the shop, which would be where Wilkinson is today. Ian has also supplied a whole bunch of images relating to the bungalow too, which I’ll feature later.

Hi Bob,

Remember I told you Mrs Brown hairdressers was bought by my dad? Well here’s a pic of how the shop looked just before opening. Mrs Brown loved that my dad called the shop Toms Cabin as her husband was Tom Brown ‘the black’ barber.

If you look down the alley way you can see the asbestos black and white ‘Cabin’ which was Toms barbers. That’s where the poster I have was from.

The second picture is from when we took the shop next door to expand the business. I’ve written about the history of that shop before I think. It was a newsagents and next door to Marie fish / fruit and veg shop.

The first pic is late 1977 or early 1978 I think. The second one is prob about 1981.

Ian

Ian initially wrote a lovely piece about those days, and what he remembered of them including a wonderful artefact of Tommy’s shed – I include it below as the two pieces are inextricably linked.

Thanks, Ian for a lovely memory and more pictures to add to the history of the High Street: I’m sure this will provoke much discussion. Please feel free to comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers!

Now, here’s a thing. I remember looking through that arch many times, but I would have sworn that shed was light blue and white, not black. Was it once blue, or is it a false memory? Image kindly supplied by Ian Broad.

Hi Bob,

Love your blog 🙂

I grew up in Brownhills, I was 8 when we moved here from Wales in February 1974.

My Dad was the Area Manger for Topmix, Hoveringham Group. We lived in the bungalow in the quarry lane. I know a fair bit about that house and surrounding gardens/orchard. There was even a tennis court there back in the day! The lawn turf was from Warwick Castle grounds. You have a pic of the bungalow in its current state on your blog. I signed up and commented but not sure it’s gone live yet [It has – Bob].

Anyway, in 1978 my Dad was made redundant so he bought a shop on the High Street.

May Brown was retiring and selling the hairdressers shop, No 22 High Street. Her husband was Tom Brown and he had a barber business behind the hairdressers. It was originally nothing but a little shed but later he had an asbestos building erected which was quite big. When we got the shop it was still as it was when he was running the business there. I’m afraid the only thing I have from back then is this poster I have attached. Yes, it’s really from Tom Browns barber shop! Don’t know why I kept it, I think I took it to show my grandparents in Manchester so it just ended up in all the stuff I’ve kept over the years.

FullSizeRender

I think a few readers could do with this! What a wonderful thing. Image courtesy of reader Ian.

What’s funny is that my Dad already had a name for the shop before he bought it. Toms Cabin. Mrs Brown couldn’t believe it. It was a carpet shop.

I remember Mrs Brown had a sheltie dog called Sheena.

The Wolsey car they owned was still in the garage behind the shop when we bought the shop in 1978. I don’t think Mrs a Brown drove. It hadn’t been moved for years but old Mrs Brown used to have someone charge the battery and start the engine every so often. A guy who my Dad knew bought it off Mrs Brown.

I remember the lady that owned the fruit and veg shop was called Marie. She had a mustard Rover P6 but was a shocking driver…

The shop in between the fruit and veg shop and Mrs Browns hairdressers was bricked up for years. (Wood Brothers bike shop was the other side of us across the alleyway by the way). We eventually bought the bricked up shop, No 22 I think it was, from the council and extended the carpet shop. When we knocked through it was like a time capsule. It was a newsagent/sweetshop. I was only a kid but I remember everything was from the 60’s. Magazines had Elvis and the Beatles on them. Sweets still in jars, cards on the counter with hair combs on them etc. Unfortunately my dad didn’t really think any of it was of value so it all got skipped by the builders 🙁

I’ve got some pics somewhere of the shop when it was Toms Cabin and also the later extended Carpets and Curtains by Toms Cabin.

I can remember a bunch of stuff about the High St shops etc if you’re interested in anything particular.

Hope this was interesting for you.

All the best,
Ian.

Brownhills Carnival remembered: Tower Hill return please, and a single for the wife

A couple of weeks ago, old pal of the blog Lisa Ashby sent in a wonderful article with some great supporting pictures showing her involvement in the Brownhills Carnivals of the late 80s and early 90s.

There was a very positive reaction to Lisa’s warm and evocative recollections, and I’m pleased to be able top feature the second part today, detailing Lisa’s memories of the 1993 and 1996 parades.

Lisa of course sent in the wonderful footage of Reg Morris eating daffodils and also undertook the remarkable photo restoration for reader Janet I posted a few weeks ago.

We have surprisingly little material relating to local carnivals – we have the early Pritchard footage of course, so wonderfully lit up by Great Grandfather of the blog Aer Reg Fullelove, and the stunning gallery by Peter Booth, but not much else.

Thanks to Lisa who’s contributed so much to the blog over the years – she really is a star.

If you can add to it, or have any other material you’d like to share, I’d love to see it. Comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks!

Lisa Ashby wrote:

1996: Putting the float together

Hi Bob,

Following on from my first article, here are some photos from the 1993 and 1994 carnivals which the B-CASS Disabled Centre entered.

In 1993 we decided to do a float based on the Court of Henry VIII. For weeks leading up to the carnival my mum, Miriam Downes and I made the costumes. We scoured all the charity chops and jumble sales we could to find any curtains pretty enough to make the dresses. I made the ladies’ hats by covering cardboard in material that matched the dresses and sewing them to a load of headbands we had bought from Ray’s Indoor Market. We spent an awful lot of time on the costumes to make sure they looked authentic and just as long getting the float decorations ready.

Our friend and long term member, Susan Capewell, wanted to play Henry VIII and as she was in a wheel chair my dad used a child’s wooden cot to make a frame that went around her and we decorated it to look like a throne. As Sue had to look the like Henry, she had her hair cut and we saved the clippings and on carnival day we glued them to her face to make a beard. I made her costume out of velvet and she truly looked amazing. Her husband, David Capewell, played Cardinal Wolsey.

So on carnival day, after all the hard work we had put in, we were very disappointed to be given 2nd place. We were told later that it was because we had ‘hired our costumes’. Although I was a bit put out that we had come 2nd because of ‘hired costumes’ I couldn’t help but feel a bit fabulous that they thought our hand sewn costumes looked so professional.

In 1996, which was the last we entered, and may be the last Brownhills Carnival, we finally won with our King Arthur float. Our friend Jean Taundry played King Arthur and I created her ‘chain mail’ outfit my knitting her a tunic, seemed like a great idea at the time, but with the blazing sun, Jean was cooking under her costume. My dad made Excalibur and my mum made a ‘rock’ cunningly crafted from a box, chicken wire and papier mache. Not much planning was needed for this float as the decorations and dresses were salvaged from previous carnivals.

Apart from Arthur’s costume, all that had to be made was Merlin’s (played by Paul Burton) costume and I again hand sewed it and made the beard, Merlin’s staff was a branch off one of the trees which we had cut down as it hung over our centre in Lindon Drive.

Hope you and your readers found this interesting, it has been great revisiting all those great times.

All the best,
Lisa

Woodmen nick Pics glory

All photos courtesy the young David Evans.

We’re now at the very beginnings of the 2017/18 season and the friendlies well underway, I’m happy to see Bill Shaw hasn’t thrown away his match day pencil and has been kind enough to send in.a writeup of the Wood away match yesterday (Saturday, 22nd July 2017), in which the boys from Oak Park beat Rushall Olympic 2-1 at Dales Lane.

Pleasing to see also a perceptible upward arc in the performance of the team. Hopefully good days lie ahead for our favourite community team.

Bill wrote:

Hiya Bob,

I couldn’t stay away and in the end Wood probably just deserved the win over Olympic’s five named players and 12 trialists, yes mate that’s right the Rushall team sheet had 5five named players listed and the word ‘Trialist’ for the other 12.

Rushall Olympic 1 v 2 Walsall Wood

It was ‘A Trialist’ who opened the scoring on 7 minutes when trialist  number nine was put clear by trialist number three to run on and calmly slot the ball past Wood keeper Lloyd Ransome. The Pics just about had the better of an open first half and went in ahead  by the only goal at the break.

On 65 minutes a right wing free kick was delivered to the far post and Callum McFarlane was too strong for keeper Dan Crane and forced the ball home to deservedly put Wood level.

The winner came on 82 minutes when from a right wing cross to beyond the far post Joey Butlin cleverly cushioned a header back inside to Tony Clarke who held the ball up well before turning and rolling the ball under the stranded keeper.

This wonderful set of images was supplied by Russell Smith, who also creates great professional video for Wood home matches. Aren’t they super? Russell points out that the chap in the dark top is this season’s new team manger, Gary Birch.

To be fair the Pics should have gone level when two minutes later Liam Lawrence collected a ball 35 yards out, took one touch and his shot from left of centre flew past Ransome only to  bounce to safety off the inside of the far post.

Wood held out to record the victory but the Pics side against Walsall on Tuesday night will look very different to this, but you can only beat what’s put in front of you and Wood did that, so well done guys.

Wood are due to play Sikh Hunters on Tuesday night, venue to be confirmed, the game against Romulus on Thursday in in some doubt but the game at Aylestone Park (Leicester)  next Saturday is on.

It’s then the magic of the FA Cup on Saturday 5th August when Wood entertain Shropshire side Whitchurch Allport from the Northern Premier League, early indications are that they have also been splashing the cash in the close season so could be an interesting game in progress, kick off 3.00 pm.

Bill Shaw.

Walsall Wood Football Club are a top local side with a big-hearted faithful who know how to have a great time supporting their lads, and welcome all comers to come enjoy great local soccer. The boys from The Wood have been at the heart of the local community for a century or more, so please do go check out a match or two if you’re curious.

A friendly word following a waspish moment, ( one of a few today ) then on with the game

Aston Manor Transport Museum in Aldridge – Vintage Verses starts soon!

This is a bit different for a wet Sunday afternoon!

A brief one starting very soon just drawn to my attention by the indefatigable Russell Smith – there’s a poetry/spoken word event starting at Aston Manor Road Transport Museum in Aldridge at 2:30pm this afternoon (Sunday 23rd July 2017).

Russel said:

Today at Aston Manor Road Transport Museum … just working on my verse but not sure they will accept…The Boy stood on the burning bus, Whence all but he had fled, He started to swear and cuss, Saying he should of rode his bike instead!

Don’t give up your day job, mate.

Entry is a pocket pleasing £3 for adults, £2 for concessions and just £9 for a family ticket.

While you’re there, you can check out all the great stuff in the collection, and talk to the volunteers, who’re doing a fine job.

This is sure to be a great event – please do pop along. The collection needs the support of the public to survive, and it really is a wonderful thing.

Why not check out the museum website or their Facebook group?

News, reports and even video from Walsall Wood FC – and a fitting tribute to a great man!

Images and captions of the Walsall Wood FC – Sutton Coldfield Town match on Saturday 15th July 2017 kindly supplied by the young David Evans

Well, it’s been a busy old time down at Oak Park Football Club, home of Walsall Wood FC – the overall season has started as usual before the official one with a series of warm-up ‘friendly’ matches and a rejuvenated, revitalised team with new management have squared off against a couple of higher ranking clubs with good performances.

A certain adopted, notable Geordie seems happy so it can’t be bad…

Bill Shaw, despite battling unfortunate health issues and in his supposed retirement has been keeping a close eye, and supplied a lovely review of last Saturday’s match against Sutton Coldfield Town. Incidentally, Bill now has the Shaw End named in his honour (I bet there will be a few thistles and nettles down there) and there was a delightful retirement presentation to he and his wife Lynn on Saturday 8th July which David Evans has supplied a gallery of pictures from at the foot of the post.

It’s always a joy and indeed an honour to feature Bills work here – sorry for the delay but as you can gather it’s been a bit mad on the blog of the last week or so. Hopefully we’ll have a quiet weekend for a change!

The remaining summer 2017 friendlies are as follows:

Tue.25th July Friendly Away Sikh Hunters
Thu.27th July Friendly Away Romulus
Sat.29th July Friendly Away Aylestone Park

A recent and welcome development has been match footage very professionally recorded and edited by the wonderful and tireless Russell Smith – the film from Tuesday’s match against Stafford Rangers can be seen below. Thanks to Russell for allowing me to share it here.

Tuesday 18th July 2017 Walsall Wood FC 2 v 3 Stafford Rangers – footage kindly shared by Russell Smith

Bill Shaw watched Saturday’s match against Sutton Coldfield town, and liked what he saw:

Hiya Bob,

Sorry about the delay in communication but I’m struggling a little at the moment, hopefully the lower pollen count will help.

It’s been an interesting start to Gary Birches reign with Wood losing two-one at Wolverhampton Sporting on Saturday 8th before drawing nil-nil at Redditch United last week. I saw the team for the first time on Saturday last when they took on a Sutton Coldfield Town 11 at home and turned in a cracking performance to record their first win of the close season.

Walsall Wood FC 2 v 1 Sutton Coldfield Town

A superbly worked move after just 7 minutes saw Mitch Tolley come out of defence with the ball before feeding Joey Butlin wide right, he made ground before firing in a low cross that Paul Sullivan hammered into the roof of the net, giving the keeper no chance. The second goal came late on, 81 minutes in fact, Butlin fouled just outside the D, the free kick touched on by Peter Till and Lewis Taylor Boyce fired home from close range.

A grandstand finish by the visitors saw them put the Wood defence under intense pressure but all they had to show for it was a solitary headed goal from Jack Bates on 85 minutes, Wood comfortably holding out for the deserved victory. Tuesday night saw Neil Kitching bring his Stafford Rangers team to the Wood, after a first half that saw Tony Clarke open his Wood account and Rangers equalise just before the break with the visitors opening up an early three-one second half lead and even though Harry Harris pulled a goal back it was the visitors who ran out the victors, in a game that saw football the winner. I’m told it was played in such a good spirit the officials weren’t really needed.

It’s no easy start for the Wood in the league with a visit to Cadbury Athletic on Saturday 12th August followed on Tuesday 15th by a visit to Heather St. Johns to take on tenants Hinckley, the first home game sees Wood entertain Heather St. Johns on the Tuesday night before they entertain Atherstone Town on Saturday 26th August. So it looks like an early examination for Birchies boys credentials with the team of course certain to be up there for everyone to want to take a pot shot at.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the honour bestowed upon me by Justin and the club, for once I was nearly speechless and to be held in the same esteem as the late, great Geoff Woodward is a great honour, so thank you Walsall Wood it’s been a pleasure to be involved over the last 17 years

As for you young man it’s been a pleasure and a privilege to feed you reports over the last few seasons so thank you as well, it has been really appreciated.

All the very best.
Bill Shaw.

Bill’s end is now world famous in The Wood: It’s a Shaw thing. Images of the presentation to Bill and Lynn on Saturday 8th July 2017 kindly supplied by the young David Evans

Mabel’s Vintage Fair at Chasewater Railway this Sunday!

I notice that this Sunday, 23rd July 2017, there’s a rather fun looking vintage event being staged at Chasewater Railway by Mabel’s Vintage Carriage, who have a regular vintage stall in a carriage at the preserved railway.

The fair runs from 11am until 4pm at Brownhills West Station (Use the Chasewater main entrance from the A5 and Pool Road) and there will be entertainment, over 50 stalls, the noted tea rooms and of course the wonderful atmosphere provided by a working preserved steam railway.

The organisers said:

Just a few days until our fab fair and we’ve organised lots of things to occupy you during the day.

Some of the best vintage traders in the Midlands, some very talented hand made traders, all day entertainment, yummy ice cream.

Bring the kids, bring the dogs… There’s loads to see and do and it’s all free!

Oh and there’s some real bargains to be had at Mabel’s Vintage Carriage too… so bring plenty of spending money.

See you there
Helen & Dawn x x

Chasewater Railway is a wonderful attraction with regular passenger services at weekends and during school holidays, featuring two excellent cafes and a fascinating museum that chronicles not just railway history, but that of our area and industry.

The whole thing is staffed by helpful and friendly volunteers who are always ready to chat and talk about the railway and rolling stock.

At Brownhills west station there are also a lovely model railway, plus a couple of great vintage and collectible stalls. The railway itself has a shop selling books, rail models, toys and other merchandise.

You can check their website here – trains run this and every weekend from 11am to 4pm with the museum, cafes and stations open earlier.

Bogus gardeners operating locally again – be vigilant

Many bogus callers can appear very plausible. Warn the elderly and vulnerable to be careful. Image from West Midlands Police.

Partnerships officer Kevin Pitt has sent details that suggest the bogus gardener scam is running again locally, and this often targets homes in our area particularly those of the elderly and vulnerable.

The latest incident took place in Short Heath but it’s worth flagging up with elderly friend and relatives.

Kevin said:

Kevin Pitt said:

If you saw or heard anything or have any information about the below incident please call our non emergency number 101, quoting the reference number provided.

Alternatively you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at their website here.

Reference: WS/153254X/17
Location: Littleton Road, Short Heath
Date and time: between 9.45 and 10.30am on Wed 19 July

Details: the offender has knocked on the front door and on it being opened has entered the house uninvited. He stated that he is a gardener and needs £200, the occupant stated they didn’t have £200 and the intruder left. It is believed nothing was stolen.

Visit our website for crime prevention advice http://www.west-midlands.police.uk

Kevin Pitt (Police, Engagement and Consultation Officer, Walsall)

Please tell your relatives and neighbours about these ratbags, and impress upon them how important it is not to buy from, or accept services at the door, no matter how plausible the people offering them. Genuine companies will always contact you by other means.

Explain that no official body will turn up unannounced demanding money for services like gardening, drain cleaning, tree pruning etc., and that if they are at all unsure of any caller, to close the door and contact the police.

Scumbags engaged in the robbing of OAPs are lower than a snake’s knees.

Please,  if you have any further information relating to these incidents, or if you witnessed something  please contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 (999 in an emergency, obviously) or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Looking like a great event! Get your tickets fast.

Long term readers will remember the annual music and fun festival that’s taken place on the smallholding just off the A5 at Newtown, Brownhills – formerly called Cockfest (because it took place on a chicken farm).

This year it’s seen some changes and is now called A5 live, and takes place from Friday 4th August to Sunday 6th August 2017, and tickets are now on sale.

Just walking’ the dog.Yes, it’s a library image, so what? Image from Walsall Police.

Your local rozzers will be at Tesco in Brownhills from 9:30am until 11:30m and everyone is welcome. I must say, it’s good to see the local police making efforts again to reach out to the public. Long overdue.

Your neighbourhood policing team will be holding a ‘Pop Up’ stall in Tesco, Brownhills tomorrow (Friday 21 July) between 9.30 and 11.30 am.  Anyone who wishes to speak to a local officer will be most welcome to ‘pop along’.

Walsall Wood Remembrance Parade: Appeal still running!

Walsall Wood Remembrance Parade and Service are always well attended. Image from the Parade Appeal Facebook page.

Here’s a very important appeal from Lee Bragginton of the 1st Walsall Wood Scout Group, who like all other folks involved with local Remembrance Parades, is appealing for help and donations so the Walsall Wood Parade can take place this year.

Options are available for individual donations online or by post, and Lee is also interested in any businesses locally who may be able to assist with sponsorship or other means.

Walsall Wood is unique in the area in being the only afternoon parade and one of the few that has no associated British Legion help.

The rights and wrongs of the current situation have been gone over many times, but we are where we are and donations are required. For my take on this situation, see this post and those linked from it.

Lee said:

Bob

Like other parades in the Walsall Borough, Walsall Wood parade needs to raise funds in order to continue in it’s traditional format.

Unlike other parades however, we have no Royal British Legion involvement in our parade and it is organised and funded by the youth organisations themselves.

We welcome any contact from any local businesses, organisations and individuals who may be willing to support our cause in any way.

See details of how to help below.

We will be holding a joint youth organisation fundraising car wash later in the year towards the parade.  Details will follow.

Thanks
Lee Bragginton

It’s not a huge event, but small, intimate and very community focused. . Image from the Parade Appeal Facebook page.

Walsall Wood Remembrance Parade needs your support to continue!

Our parade only receives a small contribution from Walsall Council in order for our parade to take place; we rely on donations in order to pay for this event to take place for the benefit of the youth and other members of our local community.

You can donate on our MyDonate page here.

You can also keep updated on our Facebook page here.

If you prefer, postal donations can be made using the form available here (also at the foot of this post).

Laptop and Xbox stolen in Brownhills burglary – please keep a lookout

I had been hoping the recent rise in burglaries would recede by now. Sadly it would seem not to be the case. Imagery from Bing! Maps.

Just a quick headsup to anyone offered a cheap Lenovo Laptop or Xbox locally: There’s every chance they’re stolen property, as these items were taken in a burglary from a flat in Brownhills High Street yesterday (Tuesday 18th July 2017).

Pauline Williams wrote:

If anyone is offered a laptop or Xbox for sale please message me as a young friend has had his flat broken into today in Brownhills High Street.

I believe the burglary was early evening, perpetrated by a youth, possibly on a bike.

The stolen laptop was a Levono, and the console was an Xbox plus controllers.

The burglary was sometime between 8.00am 6.30pm can’t be more specific on time as young lad was out at work.

He works hard for a living and comes home to find his possessions stolen znd neighbours broken into as well.

Thanks for letting me know, and my sympathies for the loss. This really is despicable.

If you’re offered a cheap laptop or other goods, always think hard about where they might have come from, and by all means grub the people flogging them into the rozzers – the stuff is probably nicked. Next time, it could be your stuff they take.

Anyone with information on this particular incident or any of the others in the recent spate of thefts is urged to contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or you can speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

You can also contact Pauline directly via her Facebook page here.
