A team line up and a pig roast: What do you know?

Brian Clenton contacted me again just before Christmas and asked if I could round these two photos again, as he’s still looking for names and information about the people in them – and they’re wonderful images, so it’s a pleasure.

Brian is of course a member of the noted local family of butchers who for a long time had a shop on Lindon Road near Anchor Bridge that many older local readers will recall – if you can’t this post here will jog your memory.

These two images were part of a larger set Brian sent in earlier here which are well worth a look.

Always happy to help readers with this sort of thing, so if you can help, please do… comment on this post, or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

The Brownhills Blog 2018 photo competition results!

The wildflower meadow at the National Memorial Arboretum by Rebecca Owen – we all felt this was a lovely image and poignant too. Well worth a first prize of a backyard mini keg.

Julie Le Moine’s first prize winning snowfield she captured on the way to feeding her horses was remarkable. I nearly missed it until another judge mentioned it, then fell in love.

Right folks – this has been hard, so hard, in fact nearly impossible and due to the sheer volume and quality of work you all submitted, I’ve dug deep and doubled the prize fund – there will now be four beer prizes for equal top images, and seven honourable mentions will receive books.

Myself and the people who kindly volunteered their judging skills – Linda, Phil and David – all came in with different suggestions and It’s been tough, and if I could, there would be more prizes. But someone has to win.

The number of owls was excellent, have to say. You can see the complete gallery here.

The decision is final, but rest assured – there will be another competition in high summer, maybe with a theme – so stay tuned. If you haven’t won it’s not a slight but out of over 200 entries it’s hard.

The standard was excellent – much better than ever I dreamed of. You all did this place proud, thank you.

Book prizes: All the following have won a book which I shall post out to you. I have a list of mostly secondhand local stuff you can choose one of, and if you give your address I’ll post it out. These were great submissions, or had spirit as a whole that was impressive, and in another comp might well have won: Sue Bunch, Doug Hulett, Carla Jones, Victoria Derby, Joanna Lees, Warren Parry and James Mason.

This one from Vicky Devine wins a special prize as I feel it captures the spirit of Brownhills, in a place many of us will recognise, and a situation most of us will have been in. It’s lovely and I have just the thing for this – a mystery prize. Vicky, I’ll be in touch.

I will contact winners individually in the week. For people having beer, I will arrange for 7 pint mini kegs of your choice with Backyard to be available for collection from their shop on the Gatehouse Estate in Brownhills and will message you with selection details, and again when ready. At the moment I’m fighting off the lurgy so it could be near the weekend before I get to contacting you – sorry.

Previous winners and friends of the blog will vouch I always deliver on prizes, it might take me a week or two though.

Thanks so much for taking part – you make this community around the blog what it is – social, fun, vibrant, creative and a joy to be part of. Thank you all.

Ben Turner’s skeletal tree was mentioned by more than one of us and the depth on this is just excellent. I find the permanence of the spires contrasts with the hardiness, yet impermanence of the tree. An excellent first prize. Well done Ben.

Maz Sealey’s Robin was mentioned by almost all of us I think, and there’s so much to make it a first prize winner. Great depth, the curve of the rod and eyelets, and what superb timing. Robin looks real and like he’s been around a bit too, and is hoping maybe for a little bait. Excellent.

Tunnelling through the folklore

The Goodall Street end of Walsall High Street in the 1960s, which I think Brian might recognise as captured by Council Preservation Officers and now depicted in the Historic England Archive.

I’ve had a really interesting email in from the Brownhills Blog Canada Correspondent Brian Edwards who relates a very interesting tale concerning Stonnall, and the discovery of a tunnel there in the late 1960s.

The story is familiar but sounds like a conflation of two to me – the Lost Hoard of Stonnal, where remarkable historical artefacts were found near Grange Farm over a century ago – the finds from which have mysteriously been lost, and the recurring tale of the tunnel from the Old Irish Harp to… Castlehill.

I’m not going to reiterate my view here on this too much, but tunnel folklore is recurrent and this one (although not here) frequently connected with bad boy Dick Turpin. I know lots of places with similar tunnel folklore – Willenhall is said to have a tunnel between the Marketplace Clock and Church; I’ve heard similar for other local villages.

I commend anyone interested in the Turpin connection locally to read this at Wikipedia. The trouble with Turpin legends for me is that for a rum cove operating in cloak and dagger style, he didn’t half seem to make his presence felt…

When considering tunnels and stories of them, consider the following points.

  • Tunnels are hard to construct – laborious, dangerous and something has to be done with the spoil.
  • The bigger diameter a tunnel, the harder it is to dig by hand.
  • Consider the ground a tunnel is alleged to be going through – soft, sandy soils don’t support tunnels and have to be lined. Rock is clearly difficult too.
  • A tunnel is hugely costly. If someone built it, why, at what cost was it worth doing?
  • Usually, tunnels are alleged to be relics of pre-Victorian times, when mining was so poor, we were still digging bell pits. Tunnelling technology was not great then. How much of an engineering feat in the time of construction would this have been?

When considering tunnels, remember there are many difficult and challenging practicalities.

None of this is intended to denigrate Brian’s tale which is fascinating, but I just want folk to consider it carefully. Many people have mentioned this tunnel over the years (some alleging it was big enough to get a man and horse though) yet proof seems scant, and all written material I’ve seen is speculative.

If anyone has records from the historians or geological societies who might have been concerned with this, I’d love to see them.

I’d really like to thank Brian for a great, thought-provoking and high quality article like so many he’s contributed to the blog over the years. Come on, out me as a doubting Thomas… Please do comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at googlemmil dot com.

Brian Edwards wrote:

Did a tunnel run from the old house centre right up the hill towards the White House on the left? Imagery from Apple Maps.

I was reiterating this story to a History teacher friend of mine when I thought it best to also share this with you before it is lost in time.

This is a short story I should tell before it is lost from memory.

When I was attending the Art School of Walsall on Goodall Street back in 1968 by chance I met up with an old high school master of mine and his wife. Alan Lord was the Master of Careers at Shelfield Secondary Modern School. Upon our meeting on the near top of the high street on market day just past the old courthouse we decided upon taking tea at Lil’s Café. The café was just a little farther up the hill from Goodall Street on the left side. Conversation began with a sharing of the general interests in one and other before leading onto the story I wish to share with you.

I am not exactly sure as to which house Alan was talking of but I know that it is a large house situated in the triangle of land that lies beside Main Street where it meets with the Chester road.

Alan had decided that part of the floor in one of the rooms that was laid with flagstones required levelling somewhat so both his son and he began the task of correcting this. It was on the lifting of the third flagstone that their first discovery was made. As the earth below was dug so as to replace it with sand it gave way somewhat and as they removed more flagstones a tunnel entrance was revealed. The son entered the first few feet of the tunnel before returning for safety reasons but he did not return empty handed. He was carrying both a sword and a helmet. The correct authorities were called and both geologists and archaeologists were brought up from the London Museum of Natural History. It was discovered that the tunnel went as far as the Chester road but from that point on it had collapsed, most probably from the construction of the road. Excavation on the other side of the Chester road was not entered into but it was believed that the tunnel might have run up to an area nearing the old fort at the top of Lazy hill. More artefacts were removed and also a fresco was removed from one of the rooms. It was discovered that the subject of the fresco was a depiction of the local surrounds. The painting was framed as if looking through a window and after more investigation it was discovered that there had been a window near to where the painting was executed. The walls had previously been covered with layer upon layer of wallpaper and it was the removal of these layers and also paint layers below that when the fresco was discovered.

Wood leave Studley standing

Pictures and captions generously supplied by the young David Evans

Walsall Wood FC continued their steady and assertive rise yesterday afternoon (Saturday 13th January 2018) by beating visitors Study and Oak Park a whopping 7-0.

Bill Shaw was there, and left smiling:

Hiya Bob,

A superb win by the lads, but it could have been so, so different, Studley in front of goal were abysmal, not making the goalkeeper make a save from less than 10 yards is diabolical and they did that on three or four occasions. Wood to their credit took full advantage to open up a three point gap at the top over Leicester Road with Atherstone Town a further point behind with Ilkeston Town who’ve played a game more and visit next Saturday now seven points adrift.

It should be a cracker, because if nothing else they make a hell of a lot of noise.

Keep the faith.  For the Good of the Wood.

Walsall Wood 7 v 0 Studley

Wood already 2-0 ahead from a competitive first half came out all guns blazing after the break and just blew the Bees away to consolidate top spot. Worryingly for the other clubs at the top all done without strikers Paul Sullivan and Sam Agar.

Wood dominated possession from the off putting the Bees under almost constant pressure but a break out of defence saw Josh Westwood power in from wide right, his near post rising drive well held by debutant Wood keeper Ryan Price.

On 12 minutes Peter Till wide on the right released Tony Clarke into the right of the box, he found Lei Brown who laid the ball back into the path of Jordan Fitzpatrick to hit a first time effort just over.

Two minutes later a break through the centre of the Wood defence with Karl King and Luke Dugmore cleverly releasing Chris Cowley into the box only for him to fire weakly wide.

With 22 minutes gone Cowley took advantage of indecision in the Wood defence, raced to the left byeline, crossed low into the centre, Price parried Kings first time effort and skipper Mitch Tolley completed the clearance.

Great, professional match footage as created by the superlative Russell Smith at The-Wood.tv

It proved important as two minutes later Wood took the lead, a lovely through ball from Fitzpatrick put Tony Clarke into the left of the box, he calmly chipped the ball over the advancing keeper Ryan Young. It took just five minutes for Wood to double their lead, an intricate left wing move ending with Till releasing Clarke into the box, he  went down under a desperate challenge – penalty – Lei Brown 2-0.

Straight from the re-start the Bees won a free kick on the left of the D, Eddie Wynne-Wilson firing in a rising drive that was comfortably pushed over by Price. The last action of the half saw Westwood cross from wide right, King firing hopelessly wide.

Wood made it three a minute into the second half, Till crossed low from the left, keeper and defender left it for each other and Brown pounced to score from close range. On 49 minutes Ben Lund collected a ball wide right, cut inside and fired into the far corner to open his Wood account. A minute later a ball over the top of the Bees defence saw Young race out to fly kick clear from Clarke.  Wood were content to play the ball around in midfield for a few minutes until they ripped the Bees apart on 72 minutes, from a left wing throw Till played the ball inside to Clarke, he carried the ball across the face of the box and set up Fitzpatrick to roll a 20 yard low effort just inside the right hand post to make it 5-0.

To their credit the visitors kept trying to take the game to the Wood and on 74 minutes hard-working Westwood cut inside from the right of the box, swapped passes with Cowley, his low drive well held by Price at full stretch.

Two minutes later a clever right wing move ended with Lewis Hayden crossing to the far post, Brown pressuring a defender into putting the ball into his own net. With three minutes left Mitch Tolley played the ball into the left of the box keeper Young fly kicked clear from Clarke, the ball collect by Hayden just right of centre 40 yards out, he took one touch and put the ball into the top left hand corner giving the poor fast retreating keeper no chance as the score reached seven without reply.

A superb all round performance as Wood ended Bees title challenge with this demolition job.

It’s Ilkeston next at the Wood when they visit next Saturday, should be a cracker, don’t be late.

Bill Shaw.

The Teams:

Walsall Wood – Price, Hayden, Deakin, Walker, McFarlane, Tolley (captain), Till, Fitzpatrick, Clarke, Lund, Brown, Agar, Westwood, Rowley, Sullivan Ransome.

Studley – Young, English, Wicketts, Clarke, Dineen, Ludlow (captain), J. Westwood, Wynne-Wilson, King, Dugmore, Cowley, A. Westwood, McCalla, Garvey, Casey, Oldfield.

Thanks to Bill and David for the report – and good luck to the lads for the rest of the season. This really is quite gripping to watch!

Ladies – are you looking for a friendly, relaxed gym in Brownhills?

Pictures of the Friendly Gym Kindly supplied by Kerry Michelle Smedley

Readers will know that I like to promote stuff going on at the Community Centre on the Miner Island in Brownhills – well, there’s a great gym there now too that’s specifically for the ladies and especially good for those who maybe are a bit nervous, self conscious or concerned about the idea of using a mixed-use facility.

The project is run by Mandy Godridge (apologies for my earlier error), a really lovely lady who will welcome you and talk you through who everything works – Kerry Michelle Smedley who also works at the gym and wrote to me with the above pictures and would like to tell you all about this great fitness project.

She wrote:

Hi.

Ladies, are you feeling a little sluggish after Christmas, do you want a new you for the new year? Lose inches, and tone up at our Friendly Gym located in Brownhills Community Centre off the Tin Man Island.

We are a ladies only assisted exercise gym with no weights, no mirrors absolutely no pressure, just a friendly figure improving environment.

The beauty of an assisted exercise program is it takes the guess work out of exercising. It delivers the right work out for everyone AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON, regardless of age and fitness level.

Lots of folk can feel intimidated in mixed use gyms – so that there is a ladies-only facility is welcome I feel.

For the traditionalists however, we do have a treadmill, cross trainer, exercise bikes, and vibroplates so there really is something for everyone.

Abridged

Here’s one I’ve been meaning to run for a good while now: If you use the canal locally, either between Anchor Bridge and Lichfield Road via Ogley Junction, or at Pelsall North Common, there’s going to be some disruption for a couple of months while a couple of bridges are refurbished and painted.

Ogley Junction Footbridge provides a link over the basin that was the Lichfield and Hatherton Branch and is one of only three listed structure in Brownhills. Theoretically  it was closed on Monday 8th January 2018 and will stay so until March 2018. In practice, it will probably close and reopen as necessary, but a diversion will be provided when it is impassible.

The same goes for Pelsall Works Bridge, providing pedestrian and cycle access to Nest Common from the end of Wood Lane Pelsall, which will be closed in the same period. Again, a diversion will be signed as necessary.

Both bridges desperately need refurbishing and surfacing, and I welcome the work being undertaken by the Canal and River Trust.

Sorry for the delay in posting this.

Meet your local coppers in Pelsall and Rushall!

Image from West Midlands Police.

I received notice of another couple of useful ‘Meet the public’ popup events via the excellent WMNow service yesterday – both this coming Friday in Pelsall and Rushall – these are great initiatives where you can meet your local policing team and get help, crime prevention and public safety advice.

The events will be at the Spar shop in Pelsall on Friday (12th January 2018) from 3pm-6pm and at McDonalds, Rushall from 6pm until 8pm on the same day.

Since Pelsall, Rushall and Brownhills share the same policing team, this is a good chance for anyone from our area to meet the local policing team.

I must say, it’s good to see the local police making continuous efforts to reach out to the public. Long overdue.

Also, if you haven’t signed up for WMNow, please do – it’s free and you can select to receive alerts on all kinds of local issues. It’s a fine thing.

Walsall Wood’s Motivation Hub opens soon

This looks like a great project in Walsall Wood.

I told you all late last year that a really interesting project was starting soon in Walsall Wood for the families and carers of adults with learning disabilities and who have a weekday requirement for daycare for their loved one – well, the lady behind the project – Suzanne Sant – has been in touch to tell me the facility opens in Walsall Wood on Monday 22nd January 2018.

As many readers will be aware, with recent austerity and continued strain on local authority provision, daycare throughout the country is becoming severely limited and oversubscribed, with many local authorities ending provision completely.

This places a huge load upon already stressed carers who then often get little rest from what is a very demanding responsibility.

The Motivation Hub in Walsall Wood opens on Monday 22nd January 2018 and will provide daycare opportunities for LD people in the area that will be cost effective and high quality.

This is a really good opportunity for people with special needs to socialise, be supported and undertake meaningful activity in a protected, caring environment.

Suzanne said:

Hi There,

I have worked in social care for many years. Mainly with Walsall and Staffordshire Council.

You maybe aware that many cuts are being made and all satellite units for adults with learning disabilities have been closed. Only leaving Goscote which is for complex needs.

I currently manage two small projects working through direct payments.

I have been liaising with Julie Harvey senior social worker Walsall.

She advices me that we do currently have a call in the borough for day Opportunities. I have also been in contact with Ian Staples lead commissioner. Who I am meeting with shortly.

Thank you for your time
Suzanne Sant

Suzanne and her team welcome expressions of interest in the Motivation Hub – so if you have a requirement for daycare for a LD adult, please do get in touch with her by emailing santsuzanne@yahoo.com here or by calling her on 07388 553615.

Up the top-end…

I’ve had a request from reader Michael Newman-Turner for images of the upper end of the High Street, between Ogley Road and Anchor Bridge to stir his memories – so I’ve trawled all I can find from out of print local photo books (thanks to the historians who collected them and made them available).

However, if anyone has any images of this area before the flats went up I’d love to see and share them please. Comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at googlemmil dot com. Thanks!

A very unusual picture of a rainy Brownhills High Street and the Warreners Arms from Waine House, which must have been quite new at this point. Note the petrol pumps on the forecourt of Forward Garage. Do you know who the man is in the picture? It certainly shows why one should take care with the captions in local history books… Cannock Road my arse. Taken from’Memories of Walsall: A Pictorial Record’ by Alton Douglas.

Have you had mail go missing?

The new flats by Anchor Bridge: archive picture from 365 days.

I’ve been asked by a friend of the blog to make enquiries about an sensitive issue in the new flats recently built on Anchor Bridge opposite Knaves Court – apparently post is being stolen from mailboxes.

The reader in question has contacted the police and they are investigating the thefts, which have included birthday cards containing money, hospital appointment letters and so forth.

Residents should know that mailboxes in communal areas are being dipped, and this seems to have been ongoing for a while – Walsall Housing Group and Royal Mail have also been notified, but we’d like to warn other residents and ask if they could get in touch if they’ve had mail go missing too, please?

If you know who’s been doing this, or have seen anything suspicious, please do contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Thanks. You can comment here or mail me in absolute confidence: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

American smooth – BOOZERS don’t waste your stamps!

Those hands. Image Kindly supplied by Bill Mayo via David Evans

The American Studio photo phenomena touched upon a few weeks ago when we featured some mystery images from a local family seems to have captured readers imagination, and also shone a light on something that appeared to be a fashion at the turn of the last century.

It seems there were many ‘American’ photography studios, presumably named as the Anslow brothers speculated, to confer an impression of opulence and exclsivity. From newspaper ads at the time, it seems such studios were often transitory, and quite the money-maker for the enterprising snapper.

Both Terry Harrison and Peter ‘Pedro’ Cutler contacted me with quite revealing newspaper adverts – particularly the one advertising for a photographer. There was clearly no messing with that one – but also respected and top local historian Bill Mayo has been in touch with David Evans with four more American Studio images from Tinsley in Chasetown, which I’m told was still extant until very recently.

Obviously, we’re after any info on this if possible. As David pointed out to me, look at the hands of the couple in the lead image. They are hands that had a hard life.

Thanks to Bill (get well soon old chap), David, Pedro, Terry and all who have helped with this one – it really is a fascinating thing. If you can help identify images or have any other info, please do comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

2018 photos completion – full gallery of entries

I can’t enter obviously, so here’s my favourite tree which always gets my vote. Home fair, Sandhills just after Christmas…

So – here goes; entries have now CLOSED for the 2018 Brownhills Blog Photo Competition, and you can see all the pictures submitted in one gallery for your perusal at the foot of this post.

The gallery order comes up in a different order every time you load the page to give everyone fair exposure..

With nearly 230 entries, it’ll take the judges until next weekend to consult and declare winners in the two categories – home and away. There will be a Backyard beer mini-keg of an ale of your choice to the winner of each category, and I will be awarding book prizes to other images that caught my eye (if you don’t drink, we’ll sort something out).

After a slow start, the Explorer quiz has started going and been extended, with all still to play for. Go on, have a go.

If I’ve missed your image or made a mistake with attribution, please shout up.

Feel free to comment on your preferences – so many good pictures; remember, it’s about the feel and result, not the technical excellence or otherwise.

I will point out as I have to that the judge’s decision will be final and this is purely for fun, and offered in good faith. The standard of entries has been very, very high and the prize budget sadly can’t stretch to every deserving photographer!

Comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Thanks to you all, you’re ace.

Witnesses are being sought to a very unpleasant traffic incident last night on the Lichfield Road in Brownhills, between Grasmere Gardens and the Co-op Corner junction with Ogley/Chase roads – I actually passed the aftermath of this and the car in question looked very seriously damaged.

Police know about the 4×4 dumped in Brookland Road, Walsall Wood this morning: Whilst it seems stolen, Tracey is convinced the vehicle involved in this incident was a grey pickup with a hard top back, like a HiLux or similar, so keep an open mind folks.

I have approached West Midlands Police for a statement and will pass one on if one materialises.

Tracy Mcdowell Cartwright posed on Facebook:

Hit an run in Brownhills at 7:50pm Saturday, 6th January 2018

If anyone has CCTV (or dash cam footage)

If any of my friends in Brownhills have seen a 4×4 pick up in grey travelling on Lichfield Road from Grasmere Garden Center across the lights towards the tin man island, this driver drove into a car by Grassmere and then into my daughter and her boyfriend.

He has pushed my daughters car for at least 50 yards down the road, the back end of her car is pushed into the boot.

He then drove into another car.

The police drove my daughter’s car back its a right mess, Leah and Tom are both safe even though they are sore and in pain –please message me if you have seen anything at all.

Anyone with information is urged to contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Woodmen battle Paget Rangers to take league top spot

Images and captions by the young David Evans

Walsall Wood have enjoyed a reversal of fortunes this season – apart from a hiccup earlier in the season, they have been resurgent, and consolidated their good form by beating Paget Rangers yesterday (Saturday 6th January 2018) on the Astroturf at Church Road, taking them to the top of the league.

A great match, that even made Bill Shaw smile. He wrote:

Hiya Bob,

A good start to the new year with a very hard fought win that with Leicester Roads game postponed sees them level on points but Woods’ superior goal difference gives them the edge. Time will tell how important Tony Clarke’s 89th minute winner could be.

It’s five home games on the trot now for the Wood, Heath Hayes (weather permitting) on Tuesday night followed by the next four Saturdays, Studley, Ilkeston, Coventry Alvis and Coventry Copsewood.

So let’s hope the bad patch is behind us and we now build on our position at the top with five games at fortress Wood.

I told you all to keep the faith didn’t I?

Paget Rangers 2 v 3 Walsall Wood

A last minute winner for Wood took them to the top of the table on goal difference, the Bears had twice fought back from a goal down and looked to have won a point after equalising in the 82nd minute, but a super strike by Tony Clarke gave Wood an extremely hard fought victory that could turn out to be priceless in April.

An attacking start by both sides, five minutes gone Jack Gibson released Dan Carter into the right of the box, his cross cut out by Callum McFarlane to deny Gibson. Two minutes later Mark Williams broke over halfway and fed Carter to race into the right of the box, his ball into the centre started a bout of head tennis before a Williams shot was blocked.

Wood first threatened on 12 minutes, a right wing run and cross by Lee Butler cut out by Riqual Kousseba-Bakala to deny Sam Agar. Four minutes later Gavin Hurren won the ball wide right, he ran on and his cross under the bar was taken by Josh Benton under pressure.

On 24 minutes Lemaar Rhule picked out Carter with a left wing cross, Hurren with a superbly timed tackle. Four minutes later Billy Fagg and Carter combined cleverly on the right of the box, the ball inside found Gibson who under pressure scuffed his effort wide of the near post.

The breakthrough came on 33 minutes, a suicidal back pass was caught by Benton and then thrown behind for a corner when he realised what he’d done.  Peter Till delivered the right wing flag kick Hurren climbed highest heading the ball back to the near post, Jake Humphries turning to force the ball home from close range.

Great, professional match footage as created by the superlative Russell Smith at The-Wood.tv

A break out of defence three minutes later saw Carter race into the right of the box, his reverse ball back inside set up Thule whose first time low drive was easily saved by keeper Lloyd Ransome.

Agar and new signing Lei Brown were always dangerous but the final ball was just missing. They combined on 42 minutes, a long clearance by Mitch Tolley was flicked on by Brown to Agar wide right, his far post cross put behind by Luke Bradley to deny an almost certain goal for Jordan Fitzpatrick.

The half ended with the Bears on the attack, Fagg hit a low cross from the right that was an inch in front of Rhule as it flashed across the face of the six yard box and it was Rhule right on the whistle messing up his shot from Bradley’s left wing cross.

The first minute of the second half saw a neat move through the centre open up the Wood defence, Gibson’s low drive pushed around his right hand post by Ransome.

A debatable free kick just outside the D on 55 minutes was fired low into the left hand corner by Dean Morris for a deserved equaliser.

Woods’ reply was immediate, Butler racing clear wide right, crossed into the box for Humphries to glance a header wide.

Back came the Bears, five minutes later a right wing free kick was headed wide by Bakala. A minute later a left wing corner fell to Williams, his first time effort was charged down, he was first to the loose ball but fired high over.

Back came Wood, Tolley played the ball up to Agar who cleverly released substitute Tony Clarke into the box, Benton out quickly and bravely to save at his feet.

On 65 minutes a break out of defence by Bradley saw him cross into the centre and substitute Ryan Conlon put a header wide.

The sides swapped chances until on 77 minutes Craig Deakin was fouled wide right, Till delivered the free kick beyond the far post, Tolley powered a header back into the centre, Agar scoring with a powerful header into the roof of the net.

Within five minutes the hosts were back on level terms, a long ball forward by Bradley saw Carter hold off a defender and slide the ball under the advancing Ransome.  They should have gone ahead on 88 minutes, a long ball out of defence picked out Zach Brown who raced away and with a player totally unmarked to his left in a two on one situation blazed his shot wide.

It proved costly as from the goal kick Wood played the ball up to the left of the box, Clarke held the ball up before turning and firing home a peach of a low drive.

It was the type of game that could have gone either way, substitute Brown made a mess of the Bears late chance and a minute later Wood substitute Clarke showed him how to score. That’s how games are won and lost. Did Wood deserve the win, perhaps not, but the result says they won, football can be very cruel sometimes.

Heath Hayes at the Wood on Tuesday night (weather permitting) before the two big Saturday games against Studley and Ilkeston.

Watch lost in Aldridge – can you help please?

The Elms and Turtle’s Head are very close: The missing watch can’t have got far away. Imagery from Apple Maps.

An important lost watch enquiry has come in from reader Helen, who’s lost a small silver timepiece in Aldridge yesterday (Friday 6th January 2018)

She wrote:

Long shot and I’ve not got a picture, but I lost a silver tiny faced watch on Friday 5th January 2018 between The Elms in Aldridge and the Turtles Head micro pub in the shopping centre nearby.

The Watch is of massive sentimental value to me, a lady who left it me passed 5 years ago today. It’s return would be just wonderful thankyou xx

New year quiz 2018 – come on, have a go if you’re up for it!

Hi folks

If you want to enter this, get in quickly.

To my surprise, very few takers for this quiz at all this year – which has puzzled me as it seems fairly easy, and is usually very popular. I suspect this year I timed it too late.

Unless there is some serious interest in the next 24 hours, I’ll transfer prizes to the photo competition instead, which has had a huge response, I must say.

In short, if you’r e going to have a go, get in there and have a pop, otherwise I’ll close all entries.

Let me know what you think

Cheers
Bob

This year, it’s easier – the answers are out there. You could win Backyard Beer just for taking a New Year walk on your High Street!

Hey folks, a little later than hoped it’s the 2018 Brownhills Blog New Year Quiz – and don’t forget the photo competition is also running alongside, and similarly has beer and book prizes to be won!

Had some great photos sent in so far which I’ll post up in a gallery tonight.

On with the quiz – I will award a Backyard Beer prize (or equivalent) to the person who gets most questions right –  there is a maximum of 20 points.

You don’t have to be an egghead to win, this year all questions apart from one can be answered simply by taking a walk through Brownhills and Walsall Wood High Streets (and immediate areas) with your eyes open!

Remember, this is just for fun!

Points will be awarded to the first person to comment the correct answer to any question. All questions worth one point unless stated. After that, no points will be handed out for answering it again. I will tot up the scores at the end. Answers will only be accepted as comments to the quiz posts, and my decision will be open and final.

I will close the quiz at 12 noon, Sunday 7th January 2018.

Remember to include the number of the question in your comment, otherwise it won’t be counted! Answers will only be accepted as comments here – any on Facebook, Twatter or via email will be ignored.

Don’t worry if your comment is held in moderation, I will take the submission time if necessary.

Good luck!

Q2: Where in Brownhills High Street am I watched by a panda while I wait?

Q3: How much is a small sausage and chips special at Marios?

Q5: These ornamental lights are in a display stand in a Brownhills shop window. What’s the brand on the top of the stand?

Break in last night at Pelsall Road stables – did you see anything?

You can’t not love the work Stevie and the folks do with kids. Image from Steve ie Ansell’s website.

An appeal reaches me from Stevie Ansell who runs the riding stables on Pelsall Road, Brownhills – between Thursday night and this morning (overnight 4-5th January 2017), a break-in took place at the yard.

Stevie wrote:

Hi Bob,

Happy New Year!

Sadly we had another break in last night – scumbags broke into the green lock up on the actual car park on front of stables at Pelsall Road.

This would have been noticeable to anybody driving or passing by – they tried to hotwire the quad bike and when they couldn’t, used the electric cable that runs to generator to try another way. They have probably blown all electrics on it – Mechanic checking – we have only just paid £800 to have it fixed from last time that they tried to steal it…

Wondered whether you could ask your followers to keep an eye out as I fear they will come back – getting new cameras as ones we had were stolen and smashed…

Many Thanks as usual Bob! You do an amazing job x

Or message on Facebook.

Stevie Ansell

Stevie and the stables do a huge amount of great work, and it’s terrible that anyone would steal from them and cause them hardship.

It’s worth pointing out that these monkeys only do this because there’s a market for what they take: if anything you’re offered is suspiciously cheap, don’t buy it: it’s probably nicked from someone like you.

You can contact Walsall Police by dialling 101 (999 in an emergency, obviously) or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Please come forward with any information you have. If you don’t want to contact Stevie or the police directly, drop me a line on BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Norwegian blue? Is it yours?

Have you lost this parrot?

An odd one here has reached me from several sources including reader Alice here who took time out to sent me an email about a blue and red parrot that’s currently feral in the Ogley Road area of Brownhills.

Apparently the bird is a regular on garden feeders and doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to go anywhere.

Alice wrote:

Hi,

There is a blue parrot with a red heat flying around in the trees near the care Home on Ogley Road. Been there a few days now.

Lots of people see your blog etc so thought I’d let you know incase someone has lost one.

Note that this isn’t Charlie the (still missing) Macaw from shelfield, who is much larger and blue and yellow.

If this bird is yours, or you know to whom it might belong, give me a shout by commenting on this post or mailing me – BrownhillsBob at Googemail dot com. Cheers.

Lichfield Waterworks Trust January 2018 public meeting this Monday

P1120641

Sandfields Pumping Station – a great historic building with immense history and social significance – not just to Lichfield, but to the Black Country. Lichfield Discovered and local historian Dave Moore have saved this valuable asset for the community.

Sandfields Pumping Station champion and public historian extraordinaire Dave Moore has been in touch to let me know that this Monday evening (8th January 2018) there will be the January 2018 Public Meeting of the Lichfield Waterworks Trust charity, formerly the Friends of Sandfields Pumping Station group.

The meeting is at the Bowling Green pub, Lichfield from 7:30pm and is of course open to anyone interested.

Dave wrote:

Monday 8 January at 7.30pm, in the rear meeting room of the

The Bowling Green

Tel: 01543 257344

The Bowling Green serves some great food and real ales.

This is an incredibly exciting community heritage project, so do come along and become involved, we make everyone welcome.

News and Events

May we take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy New year. 2017 has been a very eventful year for the Lichfield Waterworks Trust.

The trust was granted a licence to enter the building in February 2107 after four years of hard work. While initially we were quite dismayed at the state of the building and engine, the volunteers quickly rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in.

A lot of volunteer hours later, the transformation has been remarkable, with significant headway being made. There is still a lot to do, but we know that the task in hand is achievable. Thank you to everyone who has taken part.

Great News from the Architectural Heritage Fund

The campaign to save the Grade II* listed Victorian Waterworks at Sandfields Pumping Station, Lichfield takes another step forward with the award of a Project Viability Grant from the Architectural Heritage Fund.

The Lichfield Waterworks Trust was set up to save what is considered to be one of the Black Country’s hidden historic gems, and the regions least known about pieces of Industrial Heritage. The provision of clean water played a significant part in the growth of the Industrial Revolution, and added twenty years to the average life expectancy of everyday working people.

Trust Secretary Gill Bellenie said that the award of this grant is a significant achievement and places the trust in a position to really move forward with its quest to save this iconic building for the benefit of the community.

If you would like to be a part of this very exciting project, or would like further information, then please visit our website

www.lichfieldwaterworkstrust.com

Grants

We are also very pleased to announce that have been successful in a grant application to the Tesco Bags of Help programme. The grant amount is dependant on the number of votes cast by the customers of the local Tesco Stores. Voting for our project is due to start in Tesco store/s on the 2 January 2018. We will update you with further and better particulars in the new year.

Work Teams

The pumping Station will be closed over the Christmas period and will reopen to the work parties on Friday 12 January 2108.

Finally

Why are we doing this?

Industrial heritage buildings sit there quietly in the landscape, often unloved, often long forgotten. Their familiarity in the landscape has eroded away the curiosity of the passer by. But given the opportunity, our industrial heritage can tell remarkable stories of the past, of everyday people, and help us define who we are.

The gothic revival style gave Brittan its industrial look and identity. It took the language from the past and built the way to the future. The water engineering achievements of the Victorian engineers gave something back to the community, removing deaths from cholera from Brittan, enabling a new improved quality of life for all.

But let us never forget that Cholera is still the seventh biggest killer in the modern world. With 1.3 million people still infected with this dreadful disease, and 130 thousand death each year, it still has a significant impact on the quality of lives of millions of people.

This is why is so important to preserve our industrial heritage, to allow it to tell its remarkable story’s, to give us voice, and bear witness to history, so that others may learn, so they may celebrate our triumphs and be warned of our failures.

We are all creatures of memory. We cannot have a future idea unless we access a memory of the past. This is why we should save this building.

Thank you all.

Do pop over to Dave Moore’s blog and check out the history of Sandfields Pumping Station, an almost forgotten gem – the group also has a Facebook page.

Dave is, of course, one of the leading lights of Lichfield Discovered, along with Kate ‘Cardigan’ Gomez from Lichfield Lore.

It’s great to see people like Dave encourage a better attitude to our historic buildings, rather than that which we seem to have here in Walsall, where we regard heritage architecture as merely ‘fuel’.

Please do attend if you’re able, it’s sure to be enlightening and educational.

Hi folks – better late than never, here are the entries so far for this years Photo Competition – and it’s still open, and there’s time to submit your own entry.

Woodmen make big noise in the City

Images and captions by the young David Evans

The Woodemen were again on stonking form on Saturday last (30th December 2017) as they travelled down the road to Lichfield City to show the Lichfeldians a clean set of heels for the second time in recent weeks – it’s not often we get to best Ye Olde City.

Bill Shaw was there, and enjoyed a great match – and happy new year to him and all at Walsall Wood Football Club!

Bill wrote:

Hiya Bob,

Three festive games, nine big points, 16 goals scored and only one conceded – all in all a job well done. With leaders Leicester Road dropping another 2 points at home to lowly Uttoxeter Town things really are looking good.

It’s Paget Rangers on the Boldmere synthetic pitch next for Wood on Saturday 6th January.

On the health front  I’ve finally had my funding agreed, all I have to do now is wait for the serum to arrive, then liaise with a nurse to make the first injection before I hopefully can stop looking like a Red Indian. I’m really looking forwards to more than 2 hours sleep a night, so watch this space.

Have a great 2018 everyone, I hope you all get everything you’ve wished for.

Lichfield City 1 v 5 Walsall Wood

A second hat-trick in four days by Sam Agar saw Wood end the year on a high, once again they were given a surprise present with lowly Uttoxeter Town coming back from 3-1 down to steal a point at leaders Leicester Road.

Wood took the game to City from the off and it was no surprise when they opened the scoring after just five minutes, Peter Till dancing inside from wide left, fading across the face of the box before firing in a low drive that gave keeper Conor McCarthy no chance.

On 10 minutes a long ball out wide right was superbly read by Dan Griffiths, his far post cross inches in front of the late arriving Tom Green.

5 minutes later Lee Butler wide right ran at the City defence, played a neat little 1-2 with Sam Agar before hitting a low near post drive that was blocked.

Against the run of play Griffiths won a right wing corner, the ball delivered to the far post for Kyle Bache to climb highest and rocket a header into the roof of the net. Three minutes later clever play wide right by Tom Howard saw his ball inside pick out Griffiths whose first time low drive was well held by keeper Lloyd Ransome.

Great, professional match footage as created by the superlative Russell Smith at The-Wood.tv

On 25 minutes a ball inside from Jordan Fitzpatrick was hit first time by Agar, McCarthy blocked the shot that fell at the feet of Craig Deakin, somehow completely wrong footing him. Two minutes later a lovely ball forward by Jake Humphries found Paul Sullivan his peach of a through ball was collected at pace by Agar through the centre, he rounded the stranded keeper and calmly slotted home number two.

Virtually from the restart a neat move through the middle ended with Griffiths firing in a low drive that was well held at full stretch by Ransome. On 30 minutes a right wing far post cross was bulleted goalwards off the head of Griffiths, the ball bouncing down off the underside of the bar and away to safety.

On 34 minutes Deakin fired in a low cross from wide left, Howard getting in the way, the ball deflecting goalwards, McCarthy with a fine save to spare the defenders blushes. Three minutes later Nathan Walker intercepted a pass in the centre, he released Agar into the middle of the box who ran on to calmly slot home Woods’ third. On 41 minutes a lovely one touch move from halfway ended with Agar being brought down in the D, Fitzpatrick firing the resultant free kick just wide.

City then lost Griffiths to a nasty knee injury and with him went their hopes of a comeback.

In the first 10 minutes of the second half Agar had 3 chances to complete his treble, McCarthy pushed over a drive from the edge of the box, then heading over a Butler cross before racing through the centre and firing just wide. Two minutes later he turned provider setting up Fitzpatrick to hit a first time effort that was deflected wide. On 60 minutes a ball forward by Callum MacFarlane was flicked on by Agar to put Humphries in on goal, his rising drive touched over by McCarthy.

Four minutes later a lovely through ball by Dan Thurstance released Dan Shepherd into the left of the box, his vicious near post drive well held by Ransome.

On 70 minutes a ball over the top of a tiring City defence was collected at pace by Stan Mugisha who raced for goal only to be taken out on the edge of the box by McCarthy who was red carded for the challenge.  The replacement keepers’ first job was to pick the ball out of the net from Butlers top left hand corner free kick.  Seven minutes later a great run by Mugisha into the left of the box saw him make the byeline, pull the ball back low into the centre for Agar to calmly complete his hat-trick.

Nine points from there games over the festive season, the gap to leaders Leicester Road down to three points, still with four games in hand, all in all 2018 doesn’t look too daunting.

Happy New Year from everyone at the Wood.

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

Lichfield City – McCarthy, Howard, Hunt, Bache, McLeod (captain), Juxon, Lund, Thurstance, Green, Griffiths, Shepherd, Lewis, Norris, Speck, Clough, Tolley.

New year quiz 2018 – get stuck in!

Good luck!

Q1: Where are these cones?

Q2: Where in Brownhills High Street am I watched by a panda while I wait?

Q3: How much is a small sausage and chips special at Marios?

Q4: There is a springlike house name plaque in one shop window in Walsall Wood High Street. What is it?

Q5: These ornamental lights are in a display stand in a Brownhills shop window. What’s the brand on the top of the stand?

Q6: If I bought a magazine from the left hand of the top shelf in Downes Newsagents, what would it be about? (No, no, no you dirty people… not that)

Q7: If waffles are red, milkshakes are blue and cakes are green, what’s yellow?

Q8: Where’s Crunchie?

Q9: What is the green wall display in the Library advertising?

Q10: What is the phone number on the container behind Kwik Fit?

Q11: What is the place sign pictured in the images hanging on the wall in Costa?

Q12: Where is this odd metalwork? A bonus point if you can tell me what it’s purpose is?

Q13: If I wanted to make a phone call between Brownhills and Walsall Wood (and we’re not sure which of the two places it’s in) what would be the call box phone number?

Q14: What colour is the lava lamp on the counter of Monkey Vapes in the Wood High Street?

Q15: What is the location number of the Defibrillator near the High Street in Brownhills?

Q16: Steps through a gate. A wee bit Peter Saville. Where?

Q17: Which author’s books are on the right-hand end of the third shelf up of the third shelf unit on the left as you enter Brownhills Library from outside in the yard?

Q18: How much can I add a poached egg for at Brownhills Coffee House?

Q19: How much is the fine if I over stay parking at Aldi, Brownhills?

Frozen in time

Image very generously donated by Peter Booth. Click for a larger version.

I’m pleased and delighted to have been contacted once more by top local photographer and friend of the blog Peter Booth, who this time has sent me some images of Chasewater – some taken from the ‘lighthouse’ structure on the old pier in what I believe to be one of the harsh winters of the early 1980s.

This gives the images an ethereal ‘drone’ effect that I’ve not seen in other images of the period.

Peter Booth is a remarkable photographer with a genuine talent and has previously supplied black and white galleries of Brownhills, and also one in full colour. A few months ago, Peter also sent in a stunning set of a late 1970s Brownhills carnival, and he Urbexed the derelict Chasewater stadium before it was demolished.

It’s worth remembering that Peter here was working with conventional film, not digital.

Peter said:

Hello Bob

I Saw the bits and pieces you’ve been putting on the blog and social media recently about Chasewater and came across these old black and white pics I took many years ago of Chasewater in the winter.

I think these were taken late 70s or early 80s… It looks like it was a pretty severe winter with the lake frozen over.

Happy new year
Regards Peter Booth.

Well, happy new year to you Peter and what a wonderful set of images! There is one, however that is puzzling me – the one below:

Image very generously donated by Peter Booth. Click for a larger version.

I’m trying and failing to work out where this image is at Chasewater. I’m sure thatou’s Chasetown Comprehensive in the background, so is this the old Paviours Road and access to the sailing club from before the bypass came through?

If so, what’s the brick hut and does it still exist today?

Again, my thanks and gratitude to Peter, it’s a pleasure and an honour to feature material of this quality here.

If readers have anything to add, please do comment here or mail me: Brownhillsbob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

It’s competition time!

Brownhills is full of unexpected beauty. Show me and the readers what you love!

Hey folks – regulars here will know that over Christmas and new year on the Brownhills Blog we normally have a quiz where real prizes can be won – mini kegs of Backyard Ale or books; well – this year is no exception, but following last year when I made things a shade too difficult, we’re having a change around.

This year there will be two competitions – the first is a photo competition. So many people out there taking photos of our town and wider afield. Please send in – either by posting on facebook, twitter or emailing me – a photo or two you’re proud of.

It doesn’t have to be Brownhills, as many of you live away from the hallowed town now, but I’ll run two categories – home and away, and anyone can enter both. Pictures don’t have to be current, and can be anything, but should be positive and above all, yours.

I’m not looking for the next David Bailey (ask your ma) so if you’re not technical, or only have an old phone, that’s cool. It’s content and capture that matters.

I’ll keep the competition open until noon on Sunday, 7th January when a panel of me, co-admins Phil and Linda on Facebook and the young Mr Evans will decide which we like and award prizes.

Our decision will be final and this is all intended as fun, so don’t get heavy. Ask previous winners though, the beer is real and brewed in Brownhills!

Tomorrow I will be unveiling a short quiz as well, which again will offer prizes, but there will be fewer questions and you’ll have to go and explore Brownhills and use your noggin for the answers!

Again, a beer prize (or equivalent if you’re on the wagon) for that. So get to it.

Send your photos in and I’ll pst them in a gallery post as we go.

Send them to BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com, @BrownhillsBob on twitter or post to the Facebook group.

Best of luck!

Morris makes for a good sunset.

Vehicle break-in at Walsall Wood – be on the lookout, please

Beech Tree Road car park – formerly the lorry park just off Walsall Wood High Street – scene of recent car break-ins. Imagery from Apple Maps.

Sad to report a vehicle break in at the Beech Tree Road car park in Walsall Wood yesterday evening (Thursday 28th December 2017).

Reader Kevin Shaw has been in touch to let me know that his car had been broken into last night whilst parked on the popular car park:

My car was broken into at Beechtree Road car park between 6:30 and 7:30pm this evening.

They smashed the drivers window and leant into car because of it being deadlocked – this set off the alarm. Nothing taken as far as I can tell.

Glove box and centre console rifled.

Police have been informed as this is the 5th time this year to my knowledge.

Nothing was on show in the car so no attraction for theft. Kinda puts a damper on Christmas

Kevin Shaw

The people doing this are more than likely doing it to raise cash from the proceeds of selling what they steal. If you know of anyone hawking around tools, car stereos, satnavs, computers or other stuff that seems to be dubious, please grub them into the police – the stuff they’re flogging is probably nicked.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Walsall Police by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Please, lets see if we can nail these thieving buggers.

Can you help solve a Brownhills mystery?

The young David Evans has been busy with lots of research projects of late, and one in particular seems like a good story to run in the mid-Christmas lull – so can you help identify these mystery photos, please?

These two images were supplied by a local family following the passing of their owner, and nobody seems to have any clue who the child and lady featured are.

If you can help, please do comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Cheers to David for the legwork here, Bill Mayo for his wise eye and the family concerned for their generous donation.

David wrote:

A wee girl in her Sunday best, I think. But who is she? I’ve heard the term ‘American Studio’ before, but what’s the deal? Click for a larger version.

This sweet little photo measure 4 inches by 2½ inches. IN conversation with our wonderful local historian Bill Mayo I understand that Caddick’s photo studio was on Brownhills High Street, opposite present day Aldi store

But the ‘American Studio’ had us both baffled.

An altogether more relaxed image, with a rather cute dog. But who is the. lady? It appears to date from 1911. Click for a larger version.

This second photo measures 5½ inches by 3½ inches and the details are fascinating. What is the dress/ uniform? What breed of dog is the good lady holding?

The reverse of the photo has, praise the Lord, some dating information:

So this was sent or given to Sue by Emily. Is Emily the lady pictured? Click for a larger version.

There was no stamp attached, suggesting that the photo was given. But who was Emily?

My thanks are extended to the local Brownhills family who have very kindly given these images.

2017 Christmas bin collection information

It’s all about the bins. A card recently sent to me by someone who watches the annual bin debacle with some amusement.

Hi folks – I’m getting a lot of enquiries regarding Christmas bin collection arrangements in the borough of Walsall, and since the change to rounds earlier in the year, there is only one simple answer to find out when you bins will be emptied.

All you have to do is click here to use the postcode checker on the council website – just enter your postcode in the box, and it’ll tell your your next few collections.

Sadly, the new rounds aren’t in clearly defined geographic areas so it’s best to check with that tool.

Note that the only days the refuse service doesn’t operate are the three bank holidays – but collections are rejigged over the festive season to attempt to cover those affected by the bank holidays. Generally for a short period after Christmas, collections of both recycling and normal refuse go weekly to help with any backlog.

If you have bags you need to store, someone suggested you pop them in your brown bin if you can until they can be popped into the grey bin, which seems like a good idea to me.

Hope that helps clarify things – folks seem to get a bit worked up about Christmas bin collections…

Of course, if the winds get up again, your bin could well put itself out… Image from My Writer’s Circle.

Walsall Wood spoil Stafford Town’s Christmas

Images and captions by the young David Evans

Boxing Day (Tuesday 26th December 2017) Walsall Wood again continued their renewed upward trajectory with a competent and hearty 6-0 victory at Oak Park over visitors Stafford Town.

Bill Shaw was there, and kindly submitted the following match report:

Hiya Bob,

That’s Christmas over for another year, Santa has been good to us this time but we could have done without the injury to Peter Till just before half time, let’s hope it’s nothing serious.

It’s three mid-table teams next for Wood with away games at Lichfield City and Paget Rangers on the next two Saturdays before Tuesday 9th sees Heath Hayes visit the Wood. Saturday 13th when Studley visit and the 20th when it’s Ilkeston Town are now massive games and remember the home game against Leicester Road has still to be arranged.

Keep up the support everyone, it’s very much appreciated, if you want to see goals folks the ML Safety Stadium at Oak Park is the place to be.

Keep the faith.

Walsall Wood 6 v 0 Stafford Town

Wood’s second stroll in the park in four days, another six goals without reply as they moved smoothly up to second place, helped by a Sam Agar hat-trick.

Wood had the better of a lively opening few minutes taking just eight minutes to go ahead. Jake Humphries in the centre circle playing a ball out wide right for Lee Butler to run onto, he crossed to the far post and Sam Agar scored with a header back across keeper Josh Moreton. Four minutes later Peter Till crossed from wide left, Agar bulleting a header home. On 15 minutes a move left of centre ended with a cross from Humphries that was scythed over his own bar by Tom Wright. Five minutes later Jordan Fitzpatrick in the centre fed Agar wide right, he ran on and his low cross was put behind by Wright to deny Paul Sullivan. Three minutes later a scramble developed from a right wing corner, Sullivan firing in a close range effort that was saved at point blank range by the alert, hard-working Moreton.

On 26 minutes Ryan Pace won the ball on halfway, ran on and released Jordan Dodd into the box, Callum McFarlane deflecting his low drive just wide.

Great match footage from the professional and wonderfully talented Russell Smith for The-Wood.tv

With 32 minutes gone Till made space wide left, crossed to the far post, livewire Humphries played the ball back across the goal, Fitzpatrick firing home at the left hand post.  From the restart McFarlane won the ball back, swept the ball out wide right to find Sullivan, he raced clear crossed low into the centre for Agar to score on the half volley to complete his hat-trick with a superb strike on the counter attack.

On 39 minutes a free kick just over halfway by Pace was headed just wide of the right hand post by Wright.  The last action of the half saw Godwill Moraka head just wide from a left wing corner as Town tried to at least get something from the first half.

Four minutes into the second half Stan Mugisha (on for the injured Till) made space wide left, cut inside and found Sullivan in the centre of the box, he went down under a clumsy challenge, penalty – Sullivan, 5-0.

On 53 minutes Pace ran at the Wood defence after winning the ball on halfway before being crowded out on the penalty spot.

Two minutes later Agar came out of defence with the ball and released Sullivan to race clear, calmly slotting the ball past the advancing Moreton.

67 minutes gone and a neat Town move right of centre ended with Jake Partridge crossing from wide right, Mitch Tolley putting the ball behind to deny Dodd.

4 minutes later Lewis Hayden crossed from wide right, Sullivan glancing a diving header wide.

On 76 minutes a move through the centre ended with Dodd racing onto a through ball, keeper Lloyd Ransome making a brave save to deflect the ball over the bar.

The last goalmouth action of the game came on 85 minutes, Hayden wide right fed the ball inside to Agar, his ball left picked out Mugisha wide left to cut inside and fire in a rising drive that brought a superb full length save from Moreton.

With 11 goals, six points from two games over the festive period moved Wood up from 6th to 2nd. The gap to leaders Leicester Road is five points but with four games still in hand. Leicester Road host free falling Uttoxeter Town on Saturday whilst Wood travel to mid-table Lichfield City there shouldn’t be any change on the last but one day of 2017.

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

Walsall Wood – Ransome, Butler, Deakin, Walker, McFarlane, Tolley (captain), Fitzpatrick, Humphries, Sullivan, Agar, Till, Clarke, Mugisha, Rowley, Hayden, Hurren.

Stafford Town – Moreton, Butler, MacPherson, Vundla, Wright, Partridge, Moraka, Downing, Dodd, Pace (captain), Hall, Manase, Whordley.

Walsall Wood are a good team and an excellent, community-spirited club. They deserve our support.

Please do get out and support the Woodmen – with footy this great on your doorstep for such a small ticket price, you’d be mad not to go see them and experience the fantastic atmosphere at this historic club.

As ever, thanks to Bill, David, Russell and all at the club for the report – always appreciated – for The Good of the Wood!

Whistle and flute?

I believe this to be the house that was Jimmy Lawley’s Outfitters. Now a house, you can still see the shopfront and signboard above the window. Imagery from Google Streetview.

I have a really simple enquiry and request in from a reader this week relating to a local shop I’d completely forgotten about, and I think it’s worth asking you readers for help.

When I was a young man I remember a shop in Shelfield, just on the Lichfield Road not far from the garage, on the right hand side heading into Walsall. The shop was Jimmy Lawley’s Gentlemens Outfitter and must have been one of the last such shops to survive in the area.

I think James (Jimmy) Lawley’s market was largely the older gentleman and I think the shop possibly closed either with the proprietor’s retirement or passing; it later became the surgey of Doctor Norton for a while. I remember it being unusual during this period as it had a painted, jolly and old-style shop sign above the window saying ‘Doctor Norton’s Surgey’ in quite a jaunty script.

Following that period, the property seems to have been covered into a house, although STreetview shows there are still clues in the building to it’s former use.

What I’m after here are any photos or memories you have of Lawley’s Outfitters, or the building in any of it’s phases including the period as a surgery.

If you can help, please do – comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks!

I wonder how many other such shops have faded unremembered into the mists of time?

May you remain in light

I’m not normally one for dogs in jackets but I met this smug lad in Buxton on Friday and he’s just so pleased with himself. Merry Christmas little fellow!

It’s THAT time of year again, and I shan’t ramble on – but I’d just like to take time to wish everyone out there reading this a very happy Christmas, and the most peaceful, happy and prosperous new year – wherever this message finds you, I wish you well.

I’d particularly like to thank you readers for making this shambling, rambling pile of cobblers what it is – bafflingly popular. For some reason, when I started this blog nearly nine years ago, I unleashed something small that grew and grew. What I expected to die a timely and well-deserved death instead flourished, and became an entity of it’s own that people read daily and look to for local history, a little news, events and a bit of a laugh.

I have no idea how this thing got here. I have even less where it’s going. I’m still enjoying it, but I’m tired. I’m getting old. So tired. But this is a labour of love and this town, this community and the people in it are in my heart, my soul and being.

I never thought I’d still be here today.

I know lots of people don’t get what I’m doing or actively dislike it. Sorry, but I’ll stop irritating people when I die. You have my sympathies. You can’t actually do this without being opinionated and annoying. It’s what gives you determination.

Thanks to all who contribute – every one of you. From football reports to railway images, from psychogeography to union history, from cake to carnivals, it’s the stuff readers send me that make this what it has become. I could not do this without the generosity and patience of everyone who sends material, does research, or helps behind the scenes.

Merry Christmas also to those who put up with me and this in my life; to those who listen to me when I’m down and stop me throwing the towel in. The gentle encouragement, humour and assurances that I’m not actually mad really do help, as does a bloody good laugh.

My co-admins on Facebook, Linda Mason and Phil Griffin deserve an award for managing to deal with me. Thanks, you two. It is appreciated.

Just so you know, this year has seen surprising growth for the blog, mainly due I think to social media and all the lovely people doing stuff on Facebook. In 2016, we did about 970,000 views. A couple of days ago we crossed 1,100,000 views for 2017, and look set to clear maybe 1,120,000 for the year. That is mad. Bonkers. Ridiculous. But WordPress collect the stats – and they don’t count my access either!

If you want to reach about 20,000 pairs of eyeballs a week just drop me a line – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. The population of Brownhills is about 13,000. I find this clash of numbers bizarre.

My apologies are due to anyone who’s contacted me this year and who has been forgotten or it’s taken an age to get your material up – work has been very busy this year and there are many demands on my time. If you think I’ve forgotten your stuff, feel free to remind me. I won’t bite. I get a huge amount of mail and sometimes stuff gets overlooked. I’m sorry.

There will be a Christmas competition this year. I’m just not sure how that’s going to work yet. I shall think about it.

Best wishes, everyone – if you celebrate, have a good one. I f you don’t, I wish you the best. For me, the main thing about Christmas I the beginning of the return to light. The end of the darkness.

Thank you everyone. This wouldn’t be here without you.

May you all remain in light.

Morris with his Christmas lights is a little bit Vegas in a small way. I love that.

Way north of here

Leeds Corn Exchange is visually stunning. A sensitive and beautiful conversion.

Normally in the run-up to Christmas, I’ll got to Birmingham Christ shopping to have a mooch and visit the German Market, and often, I feature photosets from that on the blog.

This year, I had occasion to be in Leeds Friday week ago, a city I’ve always loved. So having got a few things done that I needed, I wandered around the shops, arcades and their German market – an identikit version of Birmingham’s – and gave the camera some exercise.

Leeds has some great architecture, including the extraordinary Corn Exchange, now a sort of shopping centre and arts/food space which I’m sad to say wasn’t as fully occupied as I’d have hoped, but it does have some fantastic shops; and some rather excellent Polish street food.

Elsewhere, the arcades of the Victoria Quarter are gorgeous at Christmas and so are the markets, some too the best I know and still doing quite well.

In the late 80s lost band The Parachute Men wrote about Leeds at the time I was discovering it for myself. They namecheck some great places, including the iconic Queens Hotel.

1980s lost indie band The Parachute Men sing about being home. The emotion transcends place, I feel.

If you get chance to visit Leeds, do. It sort of lives in the shadow of nearby Harrogate which is sad as it’s a remarkable place in it’s own right.

I’ve been meaning to post this set all week, so that gives some indication of the backlog at Bob Towers.

Woodmen bust Bolehall in Christmas cracker

Images and captions Kindly supplied by the young David Evans

Must say, it’s nice to be featuring reports of Walsall Wood FC getting back on their winning run – yesterday, Saturday 23rd December 2017 they travelled to Tamworth to face Bolehall, and after a good-spirited match they came away the victors, again by a considerable margin.

Bill Shaw sent the following report:

Hiya Bob,

Five goals and a clean sheet as Wood delivered an early Christmas present to their supporters, but the icing on the cake came with the defeat of Leicester Road by lowly Nuneaton Griff, a result that nobody could have foreseen.  Proving that there are no easy games in this division.

Thanks for the coverage, all the support and the good wishes health-wise, it’s all very much appreciated.

One thing to be sure of, the next four months are going to be exciting.

Keep the faith.

Bolehall Swifts 0 v 5 Walsall Wood

Back to normal service for the Wood, when Stan Mugisha fired home number five it was Woods’ 100th goal of the season in all competitions. An early Christmas present came with Nuneaton Griff winning 2-0 at Leicester Road cutting the gap at the top to five points still with four games in hand.

Within a minute Jake Humphries won the ball on halfway, ran on and fired a 30 yard effort into the top right hand corner, keeper Mathew Hill pushing the ball over the top.

Wonderfully professional match footage as ever,  from Russell Smith and The-wood.tv

On six minutes Aaron O’Neill raced onto a ball wide left, cut inside before hitting a near post drive that was pushed away by keeper Lloyd Ransome standing tall.

Four minutes later Humphries ran onto a ball into the right of the box, his low drive blocked. Fifteen minutes gone and Lee Butler won the ball wide left and fed Peter Till down the line, his cross headed goalwards by Sam Agar, Hill saving well.  8 minutes later Ransome launched a left wing free kick forwards, Paul Sullivan, reading the flight of the ball perfectly, ran on before coolly slotting the ball past the advancing Hill. Four minutes later Till cut inside from wide left, crossed for Humphries to hit first time, Hill with a superb point blank save. On 30 minutes Callum McFarlane played the ball forward into the box, Daniel Wain headed the ball out to Agar whose 25 yard rising drive was superbly saved by Hill at full stretch.

Seven minutes later O’Neill got clear wide left, cut inside and hit a rising near post drive that was well held by Ransome.

On 42 minutes a free kick left of the D by Jordan Fitzpatrick was too hot for Hill to put Wood two up.  Wood won the ball back from the restart and Till won a left wing corner. The flag kick bulleted home by the head of Agar.

Four minutes into the second half Agar was put clear by Humphries and he calmly slotted the ball past the advancing Hill.  A minute later Agar outpaced Wain through the centre, his low drive bouncing to safety off the foot of the left hand post.

On 54 minutes a neat move through the centre ended with substitute Kory Burke racing into the right of the box, Ransome making a great near post save.

Four minutes later McFarlane crossed from wide left to find Craig Deakin in the centre of the D, his shot back across goal going well wide.  An appalling misplaced crossfield pass put Agar clear to run into the box, Hill out bravely to save at his feet. Two minutes later Agar raced into the right of the box, rounded the keeper and from the byeline crossed for substitute Tony Clarke whose shot was blocked by a defender on the edge of the six yard box.  Fitzpatrick fired a 20 yard free kick wide on 67 minutes.

On 70 minutes a free kick on halfway was delivered into the Wood box, Wain powering in a header that was well held by Ransome.

On 80 minutes Fitzpatrick crossed from wide left, McFarlane headed the ball down to Agar to fire a first time effort inches wide. Four minutes later an intricate move inside from wide left ended with substitute Stan Mugisha firing home Woods 100th goal of the season from the centre of the box.

Wood were always in control and were well worth the win that took them back up to fourth place.  On Boxing Day Wood take on Stafford Town at home before they visit Lichfield City on the last Saturday of the year as they work on closing the gap to the top of the table.

Compliments of the season to everyone from Oak Park, the ML Safety Stadium.

Woodmen score big in City triumph

Lichfield City have a new stand… Image from Lichfield City FC, via my pals at Lichfield Live.

It was back to winning for Walsall Wood FC on Wednesday last (20th December 2017) as they travelled up the A461 to Lichfield and decisively beat Lichfield City FC in their W Hunt Cup fixture.

Bill Shaw sent in the following report, cleverly compiled for reading social media feeds of both teams and spectators, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Bill for all his hard work for the club and the blog despite his poor health over the last year.

I understand Bill’s had some good news on that front, which is excellent as he’s the hardest working retired football reporter I know. My best wishes and those of all the readers go out to Bill, Lynn and all at Walsall Wood FC.

Thanks Bill. I wish you a happy Christmas and all the very best for 2018. You are a gentleman and thanks for all you do.

Hiya Bob,

Compliments of the season to you and all your followers from everyone at the Wood.

A return to winning ways but another nasty looking injury, let’s hope it’s not as bad as it first looked. We end the year away at Lichfield City in the league on the 30th December followed by the away trip on 6th January to Paget Rangers. The next five games after that are all at home, including third placed Studley on the 13th and Ilkeston who are currently second on the 20th – so by the time we visit Studley on 10th February things could look very different, hopefully by then we will have played  a few more games than the teams around us.

It’s another report cobbled together from both sides Twitter accounts, hope it keeps everyone in the loop and is acceptable to all.

W. Hunt Cup
Lichfield City 2 v 6 Walsall Wood

Wood got back to winning ways with this comprehensive victory eventually, over a spirited City side who went in at the break level at two all.

It was the home team who drew first blood, Jordan Hunt deflecting a goal bound effort beyond keeper Lloyd Ransome to open the scoring.

Wood were soon back on level terms, Peter Till cutting inside from wide left before hitting a low drive into the bottom left hand corner. When Chris Slater headed home to put Wood in front they looked capable of taking control with Sam Agar, Stan Mugisha and Paul Sullivan all going close, but it was City who scored next, Ben Lund taking advantage of hesitant Wood defending to run through to equalise. They missed a golden chance to go ahead just before the break with keeper Ransome saving with his feet.

Within minutes of the re-start Wood were back in front when Agar fired home, Sullivan then waltzed through the defence and set up Agar who made it four. When Sullivan and Craig Deakin carved open the home defence and Sullivan calmly chipped the ball over the stranded keeper it was game over. The game was wrapped up with substitutes Kyle Humphries and Tony Clarke combining with Humphries releasing Clarke into the box to fire home number six.

Not as easy as the score suggests as Wood could easily have gone in at half time behind, but it was a different story in the second half as Birches return became an emphatic winning one.

It’s mid table Bolehall Swifts away for Wood on Saturday before lowly Stafford Town are the visitors to Oak Park at 3.00 pm on Boxing Day.

Merry Christmas everyone and a happy and prosperous New Year from the Wood.

Bill Shaw
