Urgent! Please look out for a motorbike stolen from Brownhills last night

Images posted by Chris Horton

A couple of local incidents overnight, folks – please be on the lookout for a stolen motorbike, taken on Wednesday evening 28th June 2017 from the car park of Hopwells in Sadler Road, Brownhills, while the owner was at work.

Chris Horton posted this for his pal:

Dear Bob

A friend of mine has had his motorbike stolen from the car park of Hopwells Frozen Food Ltd on Sadler Road, Brownhills last night at 9.50pm.

Unfortunately the CCTV images aren’t brilliant and the lads are trying to cover their faces, but, if you have any information, could you please let me know so I can forward it on.

The bike is a Honda PCX125 in black (see pictures above).

Edit : I’ve been sent some more pictures of the bike for a clearer idea of what it looks like, it is all black and ‘was’ in an almost perfect condition with no damage before it was stolen. The crime reference number is 20WS/136343Z/17 for anyone who has any information for the police.

There is a monetary reward for the return of the bike or information that leads to prosecution.

Thanks again for taking the time to read and share.

Thank you
Chris Horton

If someone you know has just inexplicably tooled up on a new bike, check it out, please – after all, it might be your stuff they steal next.

There are also reports of an incident in WalsallW wood last night which is aa bit sketchy but I’m trying to get details about.

Reader Shane posted:

A very good friend of mine was attacked last night (Wednesday 28th June 2017) about midnight on the A461 Lichfield Road between Shire Oak and Muckley Corner by four lads in a small Toyota type car, red with a different coloured rear bumper, green or blue maybe?

They rammed him, beat him up and tried to take his car, any info is appreciated.

Anyone with information about either of these incidents is urged to contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

You can always mail me in confidence if you’d rather – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

Tugging at the memories

Brian said ‘We had a tug o war with a difference down Clanger during the 70s. The losers had a chance to cool off anyway!’ Image kindly supplied by Brian Stringer.

After I posted the wonderful Clayhanger tug of war image here at the weekend kindly shared by Brian Stringer, I received many responses from readers across a range of media – this one clearly got memories flowing and I’ll feature a few of those responses in the coming days.

One that most piqued my curiosity was this particular boster from old friend of the blog and at the moment retired football correspondent Bill Shaw, who points out that this wasn’t the first tug of war involving the Clangers:

Hiya Bob,

Seeing the photograph from Brian Stringer about the tug of war across the canal I think that Clanger pinched the idea from Pelsall.

About 1970, or  it could have been a few years earlier I was involved on the committee of Clayhanger Working Men’s Club and somehow I got roped in [Geddit? – Bob] for the tug of war competition being held at the Free Trade Inn at Pelsall one bank holiday Monday.

As per usual the Clanger people turned up in force to cheer us on, our first ‘pull’ saw us straining to move the opposition,  all to no avail, on their side the bank dropped away and at the bottom of the bank was a tree to which the cheating cretins had tied their end of the rope.

I was halfway along the rope at 4 or 5 (quite safe you would think) but after a few minutes of trying to pull up a tree the power houses  at the front of the line  decided that they’d had enough and let go of the rope, quickly followed by everyone behind me on the rope. Now I must have been trying really hard with my eyes tightly shut so didn’t notice our capitulation.

You would have thought that I would have just slid slowly into the canal, but remember everyone this is Bill Shaw – the rope whiplashed and  I went about 8 to 10 feet in the air, flew over the heads of my beaten team mates and still holding tightly on to the rope landed gracefully in the middle of the canal, much to the delight of all the spectators, which incidentally included my mom and dad.

The water was freezing and with none of us expecting to go swimming  I didn’t have any dry clothing so it was a wet journey home.

As everyone has seen from Brian’s books there was an amazing community spirit in Clanger and we’d try anything once, me, I never went near another tug of war contest or the canal  again.

Great days, it was about that time that when I did the bingo one night in the club someone was heard to say ‘Yo can tell he’s bin edificated car ya!’ I might have been,  but I was never taught to fly and I mastered that – once, even though it was no more than 8 – 10 feet.

Bill Shaw.

Cheers to Bill for an excellent recollection, and my very best wishes to him for the oncoming football season and his health in general. Contributions like this are invaluable – thanks for each and every one.

If you can add anything to this story, please do: either comment on this post or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Happy birthday to Emma Jayne Hill from Stephen and the Brownhills Blog!

This is an unusual request but I’m happy to help blog correspondent and top Walsall Wood man Stephen Hill wish his good lady wife Emma Jayne a very happy birthday for today, June 28th 2017.

One should never disclose a ladies age, so let’s just say Emma is in her prime – and Stephen would like to say just how much he and the kids, Harrison who’s 5, Lillie-Mai who’s 3 and Isaac, 2 love the light of their lives.

Stephen is always on the ball with Walsall Wood news and often helps with blog stories – so it’s an extra special pleasure to help, and I hope Emma has had a great day – both myself and all the readers would love to join with Stephen in wishing her a very happy birthday.

I do hope there’s cake! Mmm. Cake…

Detectives keen to speak to two men in connection with the James Brindley murder investigation

James Brindley, victim of a senseless murder. Image supplied by West Midlands Police.

Following the shocking murer of James Brindley in Aldridge last Friday evening (23rd June 2017) police enquiries have proceeded apace, and yesterday (Tuesday 27th June 2017) issued the following appeal:

Detectives keen to speak to two men in connection with the James Brindley murder investigation

27/06/2017

Detectives investigating the murder of James Brindley in Aldridge on Friday night (23 June) are appealing for two men who approached James moments before his death to come forward.

Detective Inspector Jim Munro, from force CID, said: ‘We have already had a really good response following our appeal yesterday and have spoken to a number of witnesses.

‘We have received some information about two men who were seen by the entrance to ‘The Croft’ near to the entrance on the Little Aston Road side just before the attack.

‘We’ve also been told that James was seen having a disagreement with these two men moments before he was stabbed.

‘These men were seen to run off into The Croft in the direction of Rookery Lane/Whetstone Lane.

‘I would urge these men or anyone who knows who they are to contact police as soon as possible. James’ family are devastated and we need to bring those responsible to justice.”

A post mortem examination revealed that James died from a stab wound to his heart.

Information can be given by calling 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The killing of James is a brutal and shocking murder and I’m sure readers will join with me in expressing my horror and sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

I would ask that anyone with any information please contacts West Midlands Police on 101, any of the methods here or anonymously via Crimestoppers.

Please be considerate and consider the feelings of the victim’s family when commenting on social media. Whilst debate and discussion are to be expected, please be thoughtful and consider those involved when expressing views.

Memories of the Station Hotel: A great couple of hours with lovely people

station hotel

Oh, this is wonderful. A high quality, clear image of The Station Hotel in the mid 1980s. A cracking image kindly supplied by Mike Leonard.

One lost local pub that always generates warm memories and lively conversations is the Station Hotel, which was a somewhat notorious pub that stood about where Aldi is today at the Miner end of Brownhills High Street.

The Station was once the beating heart of the William Roberts empire, and fairly upmarket, but in later years it was a lively and busy pub with no pretensions, and is always recalled fondly.

I was contacted separately last week by Roy Blakey and Val Ainsworth, who sent me a lovely warm and gentle memory of discovering the Station Hotel whilst exploring by bus in the postwar period, originally posted by Roy to the wonderful Birmingham History Forum in 2015.

This is interesting in itself, as to this day, many a Brownhills youth explores Birmingham the same way – similarly restricted by the end of service at 11pm.

Val Ainsworth said:

I came across a note that my husband had put as a post on one of the local history forums.

It relates to one of his experiences as a young man.

This is a wonderful thing, and thanks to Val and Roy for sharing it – and Brownhills people haven’t changed!

If you have any memories to add, please do: comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

Roy Blakey wrote:

Lovely People: Period 1948ish…

As a group of young men, living in Kingstanding, we spotted that a relatively new bus service had been introduced, taking passengers between the Kingstanding Circle and Brownhills.

Having explored many other areas in and around Brum, we decided one evening to have a ride out to Brownhills, an area that we hadn’t had a look at as yet.

Having caught the bus ( from just in front of the Snooker hall on the Kingstanding Circle ) we eventually arrived in Brownhills. We had a quick wander up and down the High Street to get our first impressions.

We then spotted the Station Hotel  pub and decided to pop in for a pint.

Brownhills at this time was predominately a coal mining community. The Station Hotel pub was fairly packed as we entered, with what I guess now were quite a few of the miners, some with their wives, some with their girlfriends.

The first thing that struck our little group was how friendly the locals were. In the pub we quickly got into conversation with all around us. Completely friendly and pleasant.

Great company.

The second thing that surprised us somewhat was the way the way the young ladies there were quite happy to go up to the bar and confidently buy pints for themselves and then drink them down like experienced troopers.

The third thing that happened was that this was the first time we had come full on with some of the lovely Black Country accent. It was a bit surprising I guess, because we had only travelled just over 8 miles from Kingstanding to get there.

We had a great couple of hours or so with these lovely people.

I think we had to leave sometime before closing time because the last return bus was around 10:00pm.

Needless to say, we made that trip a few times at later dates. Always had a soft spot for our Brownhiils neighbours following that period.

A tug of war, a railway themed restaurant and a Victorian day – great memories from the Clayhanger Kid

Brian said ‘We had a tug o war with a difference down Clanger during the 70s. The losers had a chance to cool off anyway!’ Image kindly supplied by Brian Stringer.

Friend of the blog, community activist and Clayhanger Kid himself, Brian Stringer has recently shared three remarkable image of recent historical interest in the Brownhills and Clayhanger area.

I include Brian’s own captions with these fascinating photos, and I can’t add much to them, but they are remarkable and I hope they’ll prove a talking point – and a little welcome light relief from the heavy news of the past week or so.

The tug of war is stunning. The clear view through the bridge to Bailey House is interesting – apparently before the tip had reached the canal there, and I don’t remember the concrete fences on the Clayhanger Bridge at all. What a remarkable and fun event – and a well timed  shot!

The Holy Trinity School Victorian day is fascinating. I wonder if it was a national thing? Someone must recall those faces…

The Railway Tavern is an interesting shot, and must have been among the first theme pubs. I’ve noted this interesting restaurant before, following a post by Chasewaterstuff – see here. Sadly, the Railway Tavern was lost a long time ago – but many fond memories remain, particularly of discos there.

Cheers to Brian for a great contribution, and his remarkable generosity off spirit, as ever. A true friend of the blog and of the wider Brownhills, Clayhanger and Walsall Wood community. Respect.

If you can add anything to these images, please do: either comment on this post or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Nice to see Walsall Wood FC are gearing up for the new season with a host of great new signings, a refreshed management team and a whole host of great stuff to come, both in terms of local football and activity within the community.

The clubhouse smells faintly of fresh paint, everything’s being polished and dusted and dreams of the new season are the order of the day. It’s onwards and upwards for the local community stalwarts, who hopefully can put last season behind them and surge forward into the 2017/8 season with renewed vigour and success.

I will, as ever, endeavour to bring you news and results as I can. And if Bill ever fancies returning to match-reporting duties he’d be most welcome…

Have you seen this puss lost from Shire Oak?

This lovely white puss is missing from home in the Shire Oak area. Have you seen him? Image supplied by reader Rebecca.

Reader Rebecca Hearsey has contacted me to say she’s searching for her cat (pictured) who’s gone missing from Shire Oak, after failing to return home yesterday.

She wrote:

Hi Bob

We haven’t seen our beautiful boy since early this morning (Shire Oak) which is very unusual for him.

Anyone who sees him please comment/message me.

Thanks

Please check your garages, shed and outbuildings – cats are very nosey and can get shut in to such places very easily.

If you recognise this cat, please do get in touch – you can contact Rebecca via Facebook here, comment on this post or mail me on BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Cheers all, let’s see if we can get this splendid chap home!

Meet your local coppers this Saturday in Pelsall

Just walking’ the dog. Image from Walsall Police.

I received notice of this great event from Walsall Police via the excellent WMNow service a few days ago, advertising a pop-up meet the police event this Saturday, 24th June 2017 at Pelsall Library from 10am until 12 noon where you can meet your local policing team and get help, crime prevention and public safety advice.

Since Pelsall and Brownhills share the same policing team, if you couldn’t make it to last Friday’s event at Tesco Brownhills, this could be a good chance to catch up instead.

I must say, it’s good to see the local police making efforts again to reach out to the public. Long overdue.

Also, if you haven’t signed up for WMNow, please do – it’s free and you can select to receive alerts on all kinds of local issues. It’s a fine thing.

Walsall Wood Remembrance Parade: An important appeal

Walsall Wood Remembrance Parade and Service are always well attended. Image from the Parade Appeal Facebook page.

Here’s a very important appeal from Lee Bragginton of the 1st Walsall Wood Scout Group, who like all other folks involved with local Remembrance pParades, is appealing for help and donations so the Walsall Wood Parade can take place this year.

Options are available for individual donations online or by post, and Lee is also interested in any businesses locally who may be able to assist with sponsorship or other means.

Walsall Wood is unique in the area in being the only afternoon parade and one of the few that has no associated British Legion help.

The rights and wrongs of the current situation have been gone over many times, but we are where we are and donations are required. For my take on this situation, see this post and those linked from it.

Lee said:

Bob

Like other parades in the Walsall Borough, Walsall Wood parade needs to raise funds in order to continue in it’s traditional format.

Unlike other parades however, we have no Royal British Legion involvement in our parade and it is organised and funded by the youth organisations themselves.

We welcome any contact from any local businesses, organisations and individuals who may be willing to support our cause in any way.

See details of how to help below.

We will be holding a joint youth organisation fundraising car wash later in the year towards the parade.  Details will follow.

Thanks

Tragedy at local lake as boy drowns

Ryders Mere- scene for a tragedy. Archive photo from 365daysofbiking.

I’m very sad to relay the news that yesterday evening (Tuesday 20th June 2017), a local boy tragically lost his life after entering Ryders Mere, a large pool in the nature reserve situated between Pelsall and Clayhanger.

My sympathies and those of the blog community are extended to the family and friends of the lad concerned – this is a terrible tragedy, the sadness of which I cannot imagine.

This kind of incident occurs all too often in hot spells as folk swim in pools and reservoirs, often unaware of how cold and difficult such waters can be, even during hot weather.

Please warn your children about this hazard: open, natural water in places like this, Chasewater and old quarries and so forth is often cold, deep and fraught with hazards. Swimming in these places is very hazardous.

West Midlands Ambulance Service issued the following statement:

Tuesday 20th June 2017 – 9.15pm – Murray MacGregor.

A teenager has died after an incident at a lake in the Pelsall area of the Black Country.

West Midlands Ambulance Service was called along with West Midlands Fire and Police colleagues to the lake beyond Ryders Hayes Lane at 6.50pm this evening (Tuesday) to reports that a boy had gone into the water and not resurfaced.

An ambulance, a paramedic officer, the Hazardous Area Response Team who have a water rescue capability, the Midlands Air Ambulance from Strensham and the MERIT trauma doctor were sent to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “While staff on the ground searched the area, both the air ambulance and a police helicopter searched the lake from the air.

“Tragically, the boy was later recovered from the water and was confirmed dead at the scene.

“Although it is very hot at the moment, the dangers of going into open water cannot be underestimated.”

Hot spell causes bloom of blue-green algae at Chasewater

P1080752

The algae is a natural occurrence, but can be deadly for dogs and very unpleasant for humans.

This is an important one for dog-walkers and users of Chasewater in general who may let dogs swim in the water – blue green algae has once more been found in the lake, and Staffordshire County Council yesterday (19th June 2017) issued a warning to park users.

While the naturally occurring algae is present, people are warned not to let their dogs swim in the water, and not to bathe there (although that’s never recommended) – signs have again been put up warning of the hazard.

It would probably be wise to be mindful of this hazard if your dog likes a swim at any local open water, particularly the pools on CLayhanger and Brownhills Common and Ryders Mere.

For those wondering about the Ironman competition on Sunday, Staffordshire County Council said the following:

A test was taken by Ironman on Saturday and they had the all clear, however, we have been monitoring the situation at Chasewater, and this is a fast growing single celled plant that can emerge in a matter of hours. We will keep monitoring the situation

Staffordshire County Council also said:

Chasewater visitors advised on blue-green algae

Visitors to Chasewater are being advised not to take a dip or let their pets go in the water as a purely precautionary measure.
A small amount of suspected blue-green algae blooms have again appeared on the lake, and ecologists are asking people to follow advice on posters at the site while testing continues.

Blue-green algae is a common form of bacteria that occurs naturally in inland waters, estuaries and the sea. Blooms usually form in shallow water that is subject to strong sunlight, and are a blue/green colour.

If the blue-green blooms are swallowed, they can cause stomach upsets in humans and more serious illnesses in pets.

As the suspected algae blooms are only in small areas around the circumference of the lake, this means the sailing, water-skiing and Wakelake activities are unaffected.

County Councillor Gill Heath, Cabinet Member for the Environment said: “We have tested the water we suspect has blue-green algae blooms in it, but we won’t have these test results until sometime next week. Therefore, we think it’s best to let visitors to the site know we suspect its blue-green algae so they can take sensible precautions. It’s fairly common and tends to come and go itself, and we suspect the growth is likely just a natural result of the warmer weather we’ve had.

“Chasewater is not a swimming lake and people shouldn’t be diving in for a swim at any time, but it does get popular when the weather is hot like it is currently. The algae will only cause upset if it is ingested, so we’re just advising people not to swim or let their pets swim in water where algae blooms obviously present.”

Chasewater rangers will continually be monitoring the situation, and signs will be taken down at the site once the all-clear is given.

The algae is a natural occurrence, common in outdoor waters at this time of year. The Environment Agency explains this organic growth:

Blue-green algae naturally occur in inland waters, estuaries and the sea. Blooms can form when their numbers become excessive.

There’s a wide range of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). In fresh waters, they’re suspended within the water or attached to rocks and other surfaces. They include single- celled species and others whose cells are arranged in colonies and filaments. It’s difficult to see individual cells, colonies and filaments, but you usually can when they’re concentrated into clumps. These clumps can look like green flakes, greenish bundles or brownish dots.

Where high levels of phosphorus exist, and other requirements for growth are met – for example, adequate light, mixing, flow and temperature – then the numbers of blue- green algae can increase. Increased periods of growth are called blooms.

Blooms can have a negative effect on the appearance, quality and use of the water. It may become green, blue-green or greenish- brown and several species can produce musty, earthy or grassy odours. Blooms can also cause foaming on the shoreline – sometimes confused with sewage pollution.

During a bloom, the water also becomes less clear, blocking sunlight and stopping plants in the water from growing.

There’s nothing that can practically be done to counter this problem in the water, and caution is advised until the danger passes.

Blue-Green algae can be quite toxic to humans upon ingestion, and can be deadly to dogs. If your pet enjoys a swim, Chasewater should be avoided for the foreseeable future, and it’s definitely not good for human swimming (although it’s not for casual swimming at the best of times!)

If you suspect your dog has been made ill by algal poisoning, there’s a help guide here. for people concerned about wake boarding or other Chasewater based waterspouts, best contact the relevant club or operator for guidance.

Incidents last night in Brownhills…

Brownhills High Street – archive picture from 365daysofbiking.

Hi folks, just a heads-up if I may about some rumours circulating about an additional incident that took place in Brownhills High Street yesterday evening (Saturday, 17th June 2017), at around the same time as the collision on Pelsall Road reported earlier.

I have made enquiries, and there was indeed an incident on the High Street which police and emergency services attended. This incident was isolated, those involved are known and injuries sustained were not life-threatening.

Update 1:38pm from West Midlands Police Corporate Communications:

We were called to an incident in the High Street, Brownhills just after 9.30pm where a young woman sustained a knife wound to her arm. She was taken to hospital for treatment. This was a targeted attack as the offender is known to the victim.

There was a two car collision reported at 10pm on Pelsall Road at the junction with Clayhanger Lane which may be linked, but is yet to be confirmed, where one driver made off from the scene. One of two women in the other vehicle was taken to hospital.

Deb Edmonds
News Producer
Corporate Communications (Press Office)
West Midlands Police

There was, I am assured, no threat to the general public, and this remains the case.

I provide this information in good faith and good authority, and do so in the hope of countering some of the more extravagant rumour circulating. With the community understandably a bit sensitive and nervous at the moment, it will always be by duty to try and get facts out where I can to allay fears.

If you have any information about either incident, please do contact your local policing team by calling 101 or any of the methods listed here.

I would ask, as always, that any discussions on social media are responsible, not speculative and don’t name anyone involved. Remember that such actions can and do result in the collapse of criminal proceedings and denial of justice, so think on please.

This post is for information only and discussion is neither invited nor welcome. I will post more information immediately should it become available. Thanks.

A great new cake stop in the heart of Staffordshire with a bit of Brownhills within!

Lovely cake and drinks, and nice china too… image from the Bearded Been Facebook Page.

Since it’s such a nice day, and having tried the place out myself in the last few days I’d like to give a shout out and a little plug to a Brownhills lad’s new coffee enterprise at a popular Staffordshire craft centre and working farm – Amerton.

Nathan Le Moine, son of long term friend of the blog Julie and all round top bloke has just opened a great coffee shop there called the Bearded Bean. It’s where I was headed last Sunday until my bike decided to give up the ghost…

Located at Amerton Farm, just off the A51 towards Stowe by Chartley, I’d not been to the place in a very long time, and was pleasantly surprised with the facilities there – farm shop, play barn, farm animals, miniature railway, craft shops etc – and Nathan’s great Bearded Bean coffee stop.

You can check out the Bearded Bean’s Facebook page here.

The tea and cake were excellent, service prompt and attentive and exceedingly polite. This will become a regular cake stop on my travels from now on and I commend it to you all.

Hi Bob

I hope you are well! I’m just wondering if you could maybe let people know about a new business venture of mine. I’ve opened a coffee shop at Amerton Farm (near Stafford) and sell barista coffee, teas, milkshakes and smoothies.

Most of my stuff is made using Fairtrade, organic or local products (or a combination of the three).

I have had some great comments from people so far and just need to get the word out a bit more. It may be worth mentioning that next door is a brand new play barn (they’ve spent lots on it so it is pretty impressive!) – but its a great place to come for just a cuppa or to bring the kids and grandkids!

Nathan

I can’t think of a better place to visit on such a lovely sunny day – and at weekends they’re open until 5pm so why not get out there and give it a go?

One of the many nice things about Amerton is there are swallows nesting in the buildings, and their antics are a joy to watch!

Drama as two cars collide on Pelsall Road, Brownhills last night

The scene on the Pelsall Road last night, just near the Clayhanger Lane Junction. Photo supplied by reader Vicky.

Dramatic scenes on the A4124 Pelsall Road near to the Clayhanger Lane junction last night (Saturday 17th June 2017) following a collision between two cars, the occupant of one appearing to have run off.

Eyewitness Vicky said:

Well I heard a big bang, and I mean big..  Screeching, and I ran to the front door.

Car outside my house: Two women hurried out with kids. I ran out and told them to sit on grass, saw a car on opposite side that was crunched up.

Got blankets and drinks for them… It happened all so quickly.

Then loads of cars parked up (witnesses), Police and Ambulance arrived.

It’s thought the emergency services were on the way to attend a second incident in Brownhills, but this hasn’t yet been confirmed and no details are yet known.

The crash appears to have happened when a car apparently being driven at some speed collided with the rear of another that had just pulled out from Clayhanger Lane. The driver of the first car appears to have escaped the scene on foot.

The occupants of the car that was hit were two adult females and two young girls. One of the adults is believed to have sustained minor injuries, all others shocked but unharmed.

If you saw this incident, or have any information at all, please do contact Walsall Police by dialling 101 or using any of the contact methods here.

My thanks to Vicky for the community spirit and report, and my sympathies to those involved.

Life during wartime – Brownhills doing it’s bit. What do you know?

This is the only image I know of Brownhills Home Guard – it’s featured in Memories of Brownhills Past by Clarice Mayo and Geoff Harrington. It’s a great picture, and is indisputably Brownhills. But there must be more?

A quick one I raise here from time to time that’s quite important and I’m still looking for information on – yet very little concrete material has ever appeared.

Brownhills had an active and quite large Home Guard. Many local men were members, who did their bit and served their community in the way that men who couldn’t serve directly in towns all over the UK did.

There was also an Air Raid Patrol – whether it was one person or a group, I’ve never been able to establish.

We are getting to a time – not to put too fine a point on this – that we are becoming beyond living memory of the Second World War, particularly for those who were adults at the time.

If anyone has any material, memories or anecdotes, I’d love to share them before they’re lost. This was a key part of out communal history and we need to gather as much as we can, while we can.

Cheers everyone – what have you got? Please comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Never trust the ground beneath your feet…

The weather is glorious, so just quick ones on the blog this weekend, but this is an interesting curiosity just in from the young David Evans who’s dug something up I have absolutely no knowledge of, and wondered if readers could add to the story?

David wrote:

A fascinating thing – I’ve never head of this incident before. Do you remember it? Notice the typesetter’s mistake bottom left, where two lines of text are transposed, a reminded that typesetting was once done by hand! Click for a larger version – image courtesy of David Evans.

This newspaper cutting, from 1963*, which shows a house in Brownhills Road, Walsall Wood, (not Brownhills [Controversial! – Bob]) was kindly given to me by Mr Jones’s nephew recently.

It is interesting as the nearby Walsall Wood Colliery was quite active at that time and closed down its mining operations in 1964.

*On the same page an article, The Changing Face of Algeria, ‘In the 18 months since Algeria became independent…’ helps to date this press cutting.

What a shocking and fascinating thing. We have, of course, addressed local subsidence issues before on the blog, at Castlefort, and also talked of some of the more notorious subsidence legends hereabouts, but I’ve never heard or seen this one before.

Thanks to David Evans and the Jones family for a wonderful donation – there’s always something new! If you can add anything, please do: comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail do com.

Cheers all.

Get some Iron, man – Ironman hits Chasewater and South Staffordshire this Sunday

83580629

Care for a dip? No, me neither…

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that this Sunday (June 18th 2017), the Third Staffordshire Ironman 70.3 Triathlon will be staged, with a 1.2 mile early morning swim in Chasewater being amongst the highlights.

Since the event consists of running and cycling races too, there will be a series of road closures in Staffordshire throughout the day (details on the Ironman website here).

There will be no vehicle access to Chasewater from Saturday afternoon up until the swim event finishes on Sunday. Staffordshire County Council said:

Chasewater Country Park – Swim Course

If you can handle the early Sunday rise the swim starts happen at Chasewater between 07:00 and 08:25 with the final athlete leaving the water at 09:35.

The Chasewater site is completely locked down to traffic so the car parks on the Chasewater site are unavailable. The best plan is to park at Shugborough (see above) and catch the bus to Chasewater. The Holland Park car park on The Parade is available between 04:30 and 10:00 on Sunday morning and is around a 10 min walk to the Chasewater site.

More information here.

There’s been lots of publicity for the event, and I’m interested in reader contributions on the day – photos, reviews etc.

A quick note to those who every event mail me, message me and otherwise complain about the early morning disturbance in the locality: Sorry, but I can’t fix it, can’t help and I fully support the event. The inconvenience is one day a year, relatively minor and over in a few hours.

Any complaints should be directed to the organisers here, I can’t and won’t do anything.

Best of luck to any readers competing!

The event focusses on Shugborough. He’s either well ahead of the pack, or well behind. Image from Ironman UK website.

A great local history legend at Walsall Wood Library soon !

A great event – sadly the last one to take place at Walsall Wood Library.

Your final chance to catch a Walsall Wood legend in action – not to be missed.

Just a quick headsup to those interested in Walsall Wood history and who are free on the Wednesday afternoon of 28th June 2017 – there’s a talk featuring the Brownhills Blog’s favourite Wood Mon™ and top contributor, the young David Evans.

Following the success of David’s other recent talks which which have been very well attended, David has been learning powerpoint, furiously making slides and perusing the Les Dawson big book of bad puns for inspiration.

David is without doubt the most knowledgable historian on Walsall Wood matters and the chance to hear him speak on the matter is not to be missed – the talk starts at 2:30pm. No cost is mentioned, but previous ones cost just £2.50 (including refreshments).

Pre-booking will be essential, as places are limited.

This talk is particularly poignant as it’ll be the last one at Walsall Wood Library before it closes for good at the end of June. It will be sorely missed.

I wish David well – I thoroughly applaud David’s community spirit and hard work in putting on these talks. The more people who may be inspired to explore their and our collective heritage the better!

You can find out more by emailing walsallwoodlibrary@walsall.gov.uk or by calling the on 01922 655572 – of course, you can just pop in to the library on the corner of High Street and Walsall Wood.

Important appeal: Did you know Leslie Horton?

Untitled 9

Leyland Croft is in North Pelsall. Image from Apple Maps.

This is one of those requests that pops up from time to time, and was issued by the Communication Team at Walsall Council this week and I’d like all locals to have a think about it, and if any of you can do so, please help.

I must admit, this is a sad case and these do tug at my heart quite a bit – imagine passing away and leaving so little information of yourself known. How terribly tragic.

WALSALL Council has issued a plea to locate family members of a man who passed away at his home earlier this month.

Mr Leslie Horton, aged 47, died at his residence in Leyland Croft, Pelsall, on Friday, June 2.

He is believed to have a sister by the name of Jackie, but no other family is known.

A spokesman for Walsall Council told the Advertiser: “We would like to pass on our condolences to Mr Horton’s family and friends.

‘We would be grateful to hear from any relatives of Mr Horton or anyone who might have helpful information about his family so that they can make proper arrangements for his funeral.’

If anyone has any information about Mr Horton’s family, they are asked to contact Rebecca Evans on 01922 653052 or by email at becky.evans@walsall.gov.uk

I often run these kinds of request, mainly because I feel that whatever has occurred within families, we’d all prefer to know of the loss of one of ours. Finding the relatives can be as much about closure as anything else, so please help if you can.

Thanks in advance. If anyone would prefer no to contact the council directly for whatever reason, email me at BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot come and I’ll pass any messages on.

BBC Television’s Street Auction comes to Brownhills this Saturday!

There’s something really interesting happening this Saturday (17th June 2017) in Brownhills – the BBC television are staging a recording of their popular Street Auction program – and it’s open for people to attend at St. James Church from 1:30pm.

This looks to be a really great community event and if you want to see how TV is made, or even appear yourself, this could be real fun.

If you attend, please do share you experiences or photos.

Julia Foot from BBC Bristol wrote:

The BBC are coming to Brownhills this Saturday!

You may well have heard that the BBC is filming an episode of BBC One’s Street Auction, with Paul Martin from Flog It, in Brownhills on Saturday. The programme brings a community together and celebrates someone local who has done a lot for others.

We really hope as many people as possible turn up to ensure it is a good community event. It is free to attend and all are welcome.

The ‘street party’ style event will be start with a ribbon cutting at 1.30pm on the grass next to St James’ Church at 1.30pm, with a pop up auction – hosted by Paul – at 3.30pm. After this, at about 4pm, Paul will reveal how much money has been raised and who it is all in honour of.

We do hope you can come.

Meet your local coppers this Friday in Brownhills

Just walking’ the dog. Image from Walsall Police.

I received notice of this great event from Walsall Police via the excellent WMNow service a few days ago, advertising a pop-up meet the police event this Friday, 16th  June 2017 at Tesco, Brownhills where you can meet your local policing team and get help, crime prevention and public safety advice.

Your local rozzers will be at Tesco in Brownhills from 9:30am until 11:30m and everyone is welcome. I must say, it’s good to see the local police making efforts again to reach out to the public. Long overdue.

Also, if you haven’t signed up for WMNow, please do – it’s free and you can select to receive alerts on all kinds of local issues. It’s a fine thing.

Have you lost a key in Brownhills?

Do you recognise this key? Image supplied by reader Kevin Price.

Reader Kevin Price has asked me to post an appeal on the blog – he’s found what appears to be a house key on Ogley Road yesterday evening (Wednesday 14th June 2017).

Obviously, Kevin would like to get the key back to its owner, who must be missing it.

Want to be a Friend of Chasewater? Come find out more this evening!

tumblr_odp8f40m4n1qib2vgo7_1280

I adore Chasewater, and I know many of the readers do too. It’s time it was promoted better – can you help?

That there Kate Cardigan from Lichfield Lore, Lichfield Discovered and a host of other historical and community based projects is appealing for people to join her and other volunteers in the new Friends of Chasewater Group, and to that end they have a meeting at Chasewater this evening, Wednesday 14th June 2017.

Kate wrote:

The next meeting of the Friends of Chasewater group is this  evening (Wednesday 14th June 2017) at 7.30pm within the Chasewater Innovation Centre.

The newly elected officers are looking for Trustees to join them on the committee and they’ll also be talking about their plans for the coming months.

As part of this, we’ll also be looking at the results of the consultation from earlier in the year, in which over 700 took part.

A new Facebook page has been set up to keep people informed of developments, so please give it a like!

The idea of the collective is to get together, and promote the park and it’s interests – these could be improvements, events, talks or anything that concerns our favourite country park.

To this end, Kate has set up a Facebook Group you can join here, but if you’re not into Facebook, she’s on Twitter here or if you prefer, drop me the word and I’ll hook you up.

You can also get hold of Mrs. Cardigan in a variety of ways via her Lichfield Lore blog ‘About’ page here.

The Express & Star recently ran an appeal for members for the group, but seemed to omit how you could actually connect with them, so here you go.

The Express & Star wrote:

Chasewater in plea for volunteers

Volunteers are needed to help shape the future of an iconic beauty spot.

Chasewater Country Park is asking people to sign up to a new group called The Friends of Chasewater.

The group will be working on projects and ideas for the park and will receive help from members of the team at Chasewater where necessary.

Staffordshire County Council runs the park and said the friends group was a ‘great’ opportunity for people to work together to benefit the site. Helen Riley, deputy chief executive and the council’s director for families and communities, said: “The Friends of Chasewater is an exciting opportunity for members of the towns surrounding the park to come together and work on ideas and projects that benefit the community.

‘The Friends will take the lead on activities that local communities have said they want to see taking place at the park, and work with the Chasewater team to make the park a focal point for local people. It’s a really great opportunity for people with an interest in Chasewater to get directly involved with the park, so I’d urge anyone interested to join up.’

The group is expected to be similar to that of the Friends of Hednesford Park, which helps Cannock Chase District Council with projects and supports Hednesford Park.

Chasewater boasts a 90-hectare reservoir and plenty of green open space.

The Chasewater Innovation Centre provides visitor information, art and craft exhibitions by artists and a programme of summer holiday activities.

Protracted delays and congestion as lorry overturns near Rising Sun Island

That’s got to be a bad day. Image kindly supplied by reader Stephen Hill.

I’m late to this one as I’ve been busy today, but there were delays and road closures well into the evening after a container lorry overtuned on the Rising Sun Island at Brownhills West yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 13th June 2017).

There were not thought to be any serious injuries as a result of the incident, which occurred around 1pm.

Hopefully recovery operations will be complete by morning.

There are reports at the Walsall Advertiser here, and at the Express and Star here.

Thanks for the tipoff and help yesterday. I was stuck at work and unable to post – thanks to readers who helped keep readers informed on Facebook and elsewhere in my absence.

In memoriam: Mrs. Pat Lynk

Thanks to the work done by Pat, we know much more about our local history than we would otherwise; my condolences to her family and friends. Image kindly supplied by David Evans.

It is with great sadness that today I must share the news with readers that one of the most longstanding contributors to the Brownhills Blog has passed away recently.

Mrs. Pat Lynk was a lovely lady who worked with selfless passion and tireless enthusiasm alongside David Evans to record her memories for the community and our collective history. This was a great partnership which gave rise to some wonderfully warm, informative and fascinating articles on this blog.

Although I personally never met Pat, I considered her a friend, elder and custodian of the blog as she had contributed so much towards it. To be able to feature her work here was, and remains an honour and privilege.

Pat’s passing is very sad and I send my sincerest condolences to Lynn, John and all of Pat’s family and friends.

David Evans send me a very touching and heartfelt message:

Hi Bob

I am the bearer of some sad news, I am afraid.

One of my good neighbours and friends, and a good friend of the blog, Mrs. Pat Lynk, passed away suddenly quite recently and her funeral took place this morning.

She has been so generous in time and effort over the recent years and her unique, personal contributions to the blog and to recording our local history have been invaluable.

Thank you dear Pat.

kind regards
David

Again, my condolences and deepest sympathy – the blog, our community and it’s history are much richer for Pat’s wonderful contributions.

So where do the senior citizens play?

We’ve come a long way from the days when Brownhills older folks activities consisted of the wonderful Mrs. Parsley teaching the joys of outdoor cookery! A great wartime image from Alton Douglas.

I’ve just had a great enquiry in from reader Alison Bishop who’s raised a really interesting question – the answers to which could help lots of local folk, so I thought I’d post on the blog forthwith.

Alison wrote:

Hi Bob,

Not sure if you can help.

My 87 year old father in law lives in Brownhills. We are trying to encourage him to go out and meet people, but as we do not live in the area, we are not sure what there is in the area that caters for older folks.

I am sure there used to be a lunch club at the flats near Lindon Drive, but I am not sure.

Can you or any of your blog readers help with suggestions please?

Kind regards,
Alison Bishop

Thanks to Alison for a great question, and one to which I haven’t a clue about, but I’m sure readers must be able to help with.

Please, if you can, comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers!

Report and photos from the 2017 Walsall Wood FC presentation dinner

Here’s to a great, positive new season with Walsall Wood Football Club! Images kindly supplied by David Evans.

Last Friday evening (9th June 2017) saw the annual presentation dinner of Walsall Wood Football Club, and I’ve been sent the following report by the young David Evans.

David wrote:

Hi Bob

The times they are a changing at Walsall Wood Football Club as I learned on Friday evening at the annual presentation evening.A pleasant event to present awards and trophy to the Reserve team, to their team manager Grant Beckett, to the dedicated physio, bless her, and to Drew Aiten, first team top scorer and player of the year 2016/2017.

A whole raft of new players have been signed up for next season, and a new first team management will lead the refreshed and replenished side.

Exciting times, too as I understand that with the Walsall Wood Saints  ( juniors) teams there will now be over thirty teams playing under the WWFC banner this coming season.

Walsall Wood Football Club has now  become a Community Football Club in every sense.

Pro Bono The Wood!

Kind regards

The work groups are doing some sterling work on the building and the engine.

We have a team who are carefully removing objects found in cupboard and store rooms and carefully cleaning them in preparation for photographing recording and cataloguing.

Our photographic and catalogue team are making steady progress with the hundreds of objects found in and around the pumping station.

Work cleaning the engine is showing some remarkable progress as a reward for a lot of hard and dirty work.

The bid team are working hard to put together a grant application for a feasibility study.

The aim and objective of this study is to develop and produce a sustainable business plan to demonstrate that as a trust we are capable of managing this site in a business-like manner that clearly outlines how we will deliver an ongoing programme of funding, maintenance and renovation of the site. We will also outline how we will make it accessible, preserve the heritage and give benefit to the community in perpetuity.

George Dickinson of the Markham Grange Steam Museum has very kindly done a draft report on the viability of restoration of the engine to operation by steam. We will be sharing the report with our engineering team for their thoughts and comments.

George done some amazing work at Markham Grange Steam Museum, a place well worth a visit, so please do go up and say hi to George.

Markham Grange Steam Museums website is here

Forthcoming Events

We at the Lichfield Waterworks Trust just love getting out into the community and doing events that share our story. As always, we need help to organise and run these events, so if you can help on any of the following events, please let us know.

May Day event

A successful May Day event had been organised on Lichfield Market Square with a Guess the weight of the Spanner competition raising a great deal of interest and over £100.

The competition prize of £10 went to a 13-year-old local boy.

Waitrose Green Tokens Scheme

LWT is one of the featured charities for the Lichfield Waitrose green tokens scheme. Please shop and vote!

Florette Festival Market

We will have a stand at the Florette Festival Market 8/9 July. John Child will be bringing his replica Newcomen Beam engine. John came last year and his hand built beam engine was quite an eye catcher that aroused a lot of interest. John is an amazing guy who has driven the giant Cornish beam engine at the Museum of water in London. He is a long term supporter of the work we are doing at Sandfields Pumping station

Here is a film of John’s beam Engine working

Do pop over to Dave Moore’s blog and check out the history of Sandfields Pumping Station, an almost forgotten gem – the group also has a Facebook page.

Dave is, of course, one of the leading lights of Lichfield Discovered, along with Kate ‘Cardigan’ Gomez from Lichfield Lore.

It’s great to see people like Dave encourage a better attitude to our historic buildings, rather than that which we seem to have here in Walsall, where we regard heritage architecture as merely ‘fuel’.

Please do attend if you’re able, it’s sure to be enlightening and educational.

We need people with a few hours to spare who are computer wise and can join the group of people which was formed last year.

There is money available but if we could raise more then we could improve the park for all ages.

Please be deer aware!

This is really important with the deer currently nurturing their young.

There’s an important warning I need to share from Chasewater Rangers about the local deer population – not just at Chasewater, but all though our area from the heaths of North Walsall to Cannock Chase.

In the last few days deer have been reported locally at Sandhills and near Stonnall. I saw muntjac much to my surprise at Little Hay a few weeks ago.

As the days move on to high summer, the females will be straying from their normal herd groupings and places to find quiet cover to give birth, and then they’ll be quite protective of their young.

If you’re lucky you’ll see fawns as they become mobile and believe me, they have cute in bucketloads – but if you find one alone, heed the notice of the warning above; leave well alone and don’t touch because momma will be back!

These bathing beauties were spotted taking a dip in the canal near Chasewater on Friday 9th June by good pal and top fellow blogger Linda Mason.

Also, please do control your dogs. This is true at any time especially at Chasewater where morons with out of control animals every year are responsible for scared dear and disturbed nesting birds – please don’t be like them; control your hounds please.

This is, however a great time of year to spot deer if you’re responsible, and who knows you may spot them bathing like Angela Morris did last year when she recorded the following footage. My thanks to Angela for sharing it.

I think almost everyone hereabouts love the deer, and they are wonderful to watch. Please do, but do so responsible – and feel free to share any footage you create!

Thanks, all.

Update: Recent spate of burglaries in our area

We’re normally a  fairly low crime area. Imagery from Bing! Maps.

Following my general warning about local burglaries a couple of days ago, there’s an update to the post from reader Sophie whose mum lives in New Road, Brownhills.

She said:

Hello Bob

Yesterday I read your post about the burglary in New Road, my mom lives there so I let her know.

Later that day (Wednesday, 7th June 2017) her house also got targeted. Police and SOCO were amazing and very quick.

Please let your readers know to be vigilant and on high alert, there’s obviously a bunch of opportunist toe rags about.

Cheers,
Sophie

Sophie also today contacted me to say there was another house in New Road targeted on the same evening (Wednesday 7th June) – so that’s no four in total that I’m aware of.

My sympathies to Sophie, her mum and the other victims. An awful thing to happen.

I repeat the original post below – take care folks!

A general warning folks: there seems to be an increase in burglaries locally in the last week, either where stuff has been stolen or where raiders have been scared off.

On the night of Monday/Tuesday 4-5th June 2017, a bicycle was stolen from Clayhanger by a man witnessed on CCTV repeatedly trying car doors. Footage of him making off on the bike is included below.

Two burglaries have been reported in the New Road, Brownhills area coming soon after the walk in theft last week in Ogley Hay. In both instances it’s believed entry was gained by breaking open back doors. Please be vigilant.

Also reported, and attempted lock-snapping incident where a door was damaged but attempts to gain access failed at a property near the Shire Oak Pub on the Chester Road.

If you’re offered any desirable stuff cheaply on the side, always think hard about where they might have come from, and by all means grub the people flogging them into the rozzers – the stuff is probably nicked. Next time, it could be your stuff they take.

Anyone with information on the recent spate of burglaries is urged to contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or you can speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Bogus workmen prey on another local victim – please warn the elderly

bogus2

Warn your elderly and vulnerable friends and neighbours about bogus callers. Library image from NEN.

Yesterday, West Midlands Police issued an alert on WMNow about the distraction theft I reported on a few days ago in which an 83 year old resident of Castle close, Brownhills was victim of a distraction theft perpetrated by bogus workmen claiming to be utter cleaners.

It seems there was another incident in Riddings Crescent, Pelsall on Wednesday involving the same modus operandi.

West Midlands Police said:

In the last couple of days two crimes involving bogus gutter cleaners have been reported.

On Monday 5th June between about 10.30 and 11.30am two men attended the house of an elderly person in Castle Close, Brownhills, stating that they would clean the gutters for £5.  They then asked for some water and while in the house made a search of several rooms.  It appears that just some CCTV equipment was stolen.

Between approximately 10.35 and 11.10 am this morning (Wednesday 7th June), in Riddings Crescent, Pelsall, two men purporting to be council workers who had been sent to clean the guttering managed to get into their victim’s house.  While one of the men kept the resident occupied the other made a search of the house.  They were disturbed by the victim’s daughter arriving and managed to make their escape with a wooden jewellery box containing various pieces.  The two offenders are described as follows:

1/ white man, aged in his 30’s, approx. 5’ 3” tall, slim to medium build with short gingery blonde hair, wearing a light blue or grey jumper carrying a yellow canister.

2/ white man, slightly older, between 35 – 50 years old, thick set, wearing a blue top.  The two men were spotted walking off in the direction of Wolverhampton Road.

Police are investigating both of these incidents and would appreciate any information which may assist.  If you are able to help please contact us on 101 quoting crime reference 20WS/117319X/17 (Castle Close) or 20WS/118970H/17 (Riddings Crescent).

Please advise your neighbours, particularly those who are elderly or vulnerable, not to allow anyone into their house who they are not expecting.  Always check the identity of anyone claiming to work for the council, any of the utilities or other bodies such as the police.  Simple precautions, such a fitting a door chain and keeping your back door locked (a possible sneak-in point while you’re kept talking at the front door) can reduce your chances of falling victim.  Thankfully such crimes are rare, however are distressing when they do occur.  Anything you can do to help us prevent this type of crime is appreciated.

My sympathies to the victims. If you have any information, please do contact the police.

Please tell your relatives and neighbours about these ratbags, and impress upon them how important it is not to buy from, or accept services at the door, no matter how plausible the people offering them. Genuine companies will always contact you by other means.

Explain that no official body will turn up unannounced demanding money for services like  fencing repairs, drain cleaning, tree pruning etc., and that if they are at all unsure of any caller, to close the door and contact the police.

Scumbags engaged in the robbing of OAPs are lower than a snake’s knees, and I hope the police continue to crack down on this cowardly, nasty crime.

Please,  if you have any further information relating to this, or any other incident, or if you witnessed something  please contact Walsall Police by dialling 101 (999 in an emergency, obviously) or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111

Are you looking for a little black cock?

This seems like a fancy bird that someone could well be missing. Images kindly supplied by Chris Wharton.

An odd request here from top bloke and old friend of the blog Chris Wharton who lives near the Barracks Lane/Lichfield Road junction at the very foot of Shire Oak at Sandhills – if you’re looking for a little black cockerel, Chris has found it!

Chris said

Hiya Bob

I’ve got an unusual request. We’ve got a black cockerel in the field next to ours.

I’ve contacted The Lanes at Home Farm, Crestacre and also the vets at Warrenhouse to no avail.

The old man thinks it’s been dumped and we’ve contacted the RSPCA who will try and send someone out.

Could you put it out to post please just in case?

Cheers
Chris 🙂

Cheers to Chris for one of the more unusual enquiries I’ve ever had…

If you recognise this lad, please do comment here, or you can contact me by email – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Cheers folks – it’d be nice to get the bird reunited with it’s owners.

New Hall Mill is open again this Sunday!

P1040438

New Hall Mill is a splendid place, restored and run by wonderfully dedicated volunteers.

Theres a lovely thing to visit locally this Sunday (11th June 2017), that’s close by, free and absolutely fascinating…

New Hall Mill is open again on Sunday for the second open day of 2017. I can heartily recommend the place – it’s fascinating and I had a great time there on 2015 Spring Bank Holiday Monday – not enough people know about this wonderful building.

There’s also an appeal ongoing for people who may be interested to join the friends of New Hall Mill and help in all sorts of ways – the team need all kinds of expertise from guides to engineering types who may have time to spare. See the message at the door to the post.

The open day is free to enter too (although donations are welcomed).

The Friends of Newhall Mill said:

Bob

On Sunday June 11th  –  New Hall water mill will again be open to the public, come along and see flour being produced from wheat in the traditional way, have a go on a hand operated quern as still used in parts of the world today. Visit the gift shop, be entertained with Live music, see the many side stalls in the grounds and experience lovely walks alongside the streams and through the meadows.

There is an exhibition room and small tearoom selling cakes and beverages along with a garden shop where produce may be purchased from the millers garden. Don’t forget to visit Auntie Wainwrights to find that bargain that you always wanted.

Today’s entertainment will be supplied by The Sutton Coldfield Community Choir (12:00 – 12:45)

In the cart shed will be a display of Large Steam Models.

In the grounds there will be Displays & Demonstrations by –

  • The British Woodcarvers Association
  • The Turner collection of Steam Models
  • Bournville Bread Basket
  • The Jewellery Quarter
  • Model Fairground
  • Vintage Singer Sewing Machines
  • Birmingham & The Black Country Wildlife Trust
  • Maidens Fayre
  • Helen’s Handmade Gifts
  • Queen of Cups
  • Hello Boo
  • Trikes & Bikes will be conducting Bike safety checks

… and individuals will be displaying their various collections

P1040417

I totally geeked out over this wonderful place.

A guided walk will take place at 11:15 (Wildflower Wander) led by Jeff Gilbert and if available, Alan Gardner (TV’s Autistic Gardener). Mill walks last for approx 45 minutes.

Entry to the site and Parking is free, donations are always welcome in order that we raise funds to maintain the buildings for all to see in the future.

Please note that we open at 10:00 and close at 16:00 with last entry onto site being at 15:45.

Access to the mill is off Wylde Green Road, Sutton Coldfield, B76 1QU some 200 metres from National Cycle Route 534.

Having seen what we do, could you be able to assist? In order to continue holding these events, we need additional membership to help out on Open Days and Work Days. It is not all about Flour production – We have an ageing diesel engine to maintain, kitchen staff are always welcome, there are openings in all areas. Have a chat with a volunteer on Open day.

Hoping to see you there
Alan Dawson – A friend of New Hall Mill

More details can be found on their website – www.newhallmill.org.uk or their Facebook page here.

This is certainly a project worth visiting and supporting – please do pop along if you can.  You can check out a gallery of my photos taken there last year below. I had a great time.

Claridges – the quest continues!

The Claridge store in Walsall Wood – image very kindly donated by Chris Smith.

Thanks to everyone who replied across a range of blog comments and social media to my request for information about Percy Claridge and his local institution, Claridges Electrical, the noted local electrical retailer.

Local journalist Emma Kempson was hoping to find memories and photos of the Claridge empire for an article she’s preparing celebrating the company’s 60th anniversary.

2Claridges is a longstanding and well-respected local company with stores in Brownhills and Walsall Wood, and it’s rare indeed to see an independent electrical sales shop that survives and thrives.

Chris Smith got in touch after my post, and commented:

Hi,

Percy Vernon Claridge was my first cousin once removed, or to me simply “Auntie Vina’s son” (his mother’s name was actually Lavinia and she was my Grandad Smith’s sister.

I have a picture of the Walsall Wood Shop from where, as family members and locals, we bought several appliances.

I’m also working on our family tree and any details anyone can share with respect to Percy’s family or my Great Grand Parents Joseph Smith and Lavinia Smith ne Horton who lived at 7 Gilpins Building, Shire Oak.

I would like to hear from please.

Chris

After finally making email contact, Chris kindly sent in the above image this week for which I’m most grateful. She said:

Hi Bob,

My apologies for not getting back to you sooner. The picture was attached to our family tree and I couldn’t figure-out how to save it on its own. I have now tough and it is attached.

FYI my relatives in the Walsall Wood and Brownhills are Smiths (from Shire Oak), Hopleys, Harveys, Hollands (from Walsall Wood, not the Hyla Holland Brownhills family the Park is named after).

All the best,
Chris

Thanks to Chris for her generosity and I make the request – if you can help with her family history, please do; I know there’s much information resting with the Walsall Wood Contingent here….

If you’ve got any memories, photos or any other contributions? You’re most welcome. Comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Travellers pitch up at old Oak Park car park again

This image of travellers on the former Oak Park car park was sent in by reader Stephen yesterday.

Yesterday afternoon (Tuesday, 6th June 2017), travellers once more set up an unauthorised encampment on the old Oak Park car park in Walsall Wood, just behind the KFC ‘restaurant’.

Council officials have been informed, and do tend to act quickly, and suspect the encampment will be moved on fairly swiftly.

Thanks to the kind readers who tipped me off.

This post is intended for information only.

83 year old local lady burgled by bogus callers – please warn the elderly

bogus2

Warn your elderly and vulnerable friends and neighbours about bogus callers. Library image from NEN.

A headsup, folks – a heartbreaking crime occurred yesterday in Castle Close Brownhills were an 83 year old lady amputee had her house burgled by callers posing as gutter cleaners.

Reader Matt said:

This is a warning to anyone with elderly relatives…

This morning two spineless gits have robbed my girlfriends nan’s house with her in it, on Castle Close, Brownhills, after spinning her a line about cleaning gutters.

So just a warning to anyone with elderly parents or grandparents to keep a look out for anything or anyone suspicious.

They pose as people cleaning gutters, they even got her to make them a cup of coffee and they have just gone round the house pulling out every draw and opening every bag/handbag.

We have been told they have got a white Peugeot van with ladders on it and cloned plates, her nan said from what she could see one of the so called men has got black hair and is stocky/fat with an Irish accent.

My sympathies to the victim, Matt and family. This is a particularly nasty crime and I hope the police catch the perpetrators quickly.

Please tell your relatives and neighbours about these ratbags, and impress upon them how important it is not to buy from, or accept services at the door, no matter how plausible the people offering them. Genuine companies will always contact you by other means.

Public service announcement: About those adverts…

I hate adverts too. Sorry about that.

Hey folks, I’ve had a few people twang me lately that adverts have started appearing in blog posts, and asking if I’m using web ads these days.

First of all, sorry they’re happening. These adverts are inserted by the host of the blog and I have no control over them currently, nor the nature of the stuff they are flogging.

The situation is a bit annoying at the moment. WordPress, the host of this shambling pile of crap used to have lots of modules and options that you could buy including ones for extra space, domain management, and to disable ads.

These days, the optional extras have been rolled up into plans – so the no adverts option I started to pay for annually after the first great ad outrage™ is now part of either a personal, premium or business plan. I was also buying extra space and domains. The extra space is also now part of the plans and also unavailable separately.

Because of this marlarkey, and because of the huge space this site and it’s media now occupy (just short of 28 gigabytes) I’m going to have to transfer to a business plan, which gives me unlimited space (yay!) and lot of other options to play with, as well as no ads and the domains.

All this will cost £260 per year.

I am happy to pay this. WordPress has been a very reliable host, with great uptime and mercifully few bugs. They are secure and support content providers like me well, with a fine product. Considering most users of WordPress never need a paid option, they do a lot of stuff for the community free and I respect that totally.

I’m pretty sure web adverts are useless anyway.

The reason the ads have come back is all the options I have expire at different times, so while I’m getting best value by waiting for the extra space option to expire, the no ads option has finished, and you’re getting sold stuff again. Sorry.

Before the end of this month (June 2017) I will have purchased the plan and the ads will vanish again (and there may even be some whizzy new features). Until then, my apologies.

Rest assured, I will never make money from this blog or my associated social media, and that includes never running paid advertisements. I am happy to foot the bill out of my own pocket and would never ask for or accept support from the readership or any business, and that includes paid ads.

If I accepted anything from anyone for my work here I feel it would be compromised and I have more respect for you than to do that.

So please accept my apologies or the sludge bothering your browsing and I’ll have it sorted pretty soon. Cheers for your patience.

Bob.

Hot metal and cool machines

I love the watching the concentration of the drivers as they Marshall their machines around the site. Real skill and care.

Yesterday (Saturday 3th June 2017) I cycled up the A515 to the annual Steam Party event at Klondyke Mill in Draycott in the Clay, home of the North Staffordshire and Cheshire Traction Engine Club – It’s an event I often go to; quintessentially British, it’s a feast for mechanical geeks, people watchers and vintage buffs of all stripes – and it’s running today, too.

There were traction engines in full steam driving around the yard, stationary engines, classic cars, tractors, land rovers and much more – it’s well worth a visit and the people are very friendly.

Caring for the engines is a full-time occupation.

The good thing is it’s running today (Sunday 4th June 2016) too, so if you like the look of my photos, get yourselves up there – Just hit the A515 not and it’s just through Draycott in the Clay on the right off the main road. You can’t miss it. Entrance fee is £4.50.

The twice yearly ‘Steam Party’ is regular, and the next one is on the 14th and 15th October 2017. It’s well worth a visit, but the entrance fee can be a shock if there’s a few of you; but the fuel alone isn’t cheap and the North Staffs and Cheshire Traction Engine Club need all the funds they can raise.

Intruders disturbed during attempted burglary in Shire Oak

Untitled 9

Attempted burglary in Shire Oak – please be on your guard, folks. Imagery from Apple maps.

There’s been an attempted house burglary at Shire Oak overnight, Saturday/Sunday 3-4th June 2017, in which intruders broke into a house in Shire Ridge – thankfully they were confronted and made their escape.

Resident Sarah commented on Facebook:

Hi All

Burglary on Shire Ridge last night.

Broke into my neighbours through their patio, neighbour confronted them on the landing and luckily they legged it.

Think they were after car keys as it has happened before. Stay safe everyone

Sarah

Thanks to Sarah for keeping us all informed.

The people doing this are more than likely doing it to raise cash from the proceeds of selling what they steal. If you know of anyone hawking around stuff that seems to be dubious, please grub them into the police – the stuff they’re flogging is probably nicked.

Anyone with information is urged to contact West Midlands Police quoting long no. 363 of 4th June 2017 or by dialling 101 or speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
