Walsall Wood Reserves blather Bolehall – and some important news for Pelsall Villans!

The young David Evans yesterday (Saturday, 30th September 2017) attended the Walsall Wood reserves home match at Oak Park, and watched the Wood lads blather Bolehall eight-nil – but in a surprise development, this barnstormer seems to be the last game for the reserves for at least this season.

Yesterday evening, Walsall Wood Football Club posted the following official statement on social media:

From the Chairman of Walsall Wood FC & Pelsall Villa FC

As at 2nd October 2017, Walsall Wood Reserves will be resigning from the Total Motion Midland Football League Reserve Division with immediate effect.

In conjunction with this resignation, Pelsall Villa 1st team will ground share with Walsall Wood FC for at least the season of 2017-18 and possibly longer.

The Walsall Wood FC Reserve Team Manager, Grant Beckett will with immediate effect become Pelsall Villa’s 1st team manager.

This decision has been made to benefit both clubs and to secure the future of competitive football at Grassroots level in our local area ofWalsall.

This is clearly great news for both Pelsall and Walsall Wood fans, but sad of course, for the reserves who’ve played well this season. My best wishes, and those of the readership go out to all involved, and as to Walsall Wood stepping up to aid their neighbours after they suffered such cruel vandalism? That’s a true act of sporting felicity.

Thank you Walsall Wood FC, and welcome to the Wood for the Pelsall fateful too. Best wishes for the season – and thanks to to the reserve team who were a credit to the Wood strip.

David Evans had the following to say about today’s final reserves match:

WWFC Reserves vs Bolehall Swifts 30 September 2017

Walsall Wood Reserves 8 v 0 Bolehall Swifts

Proficient, quality soccer play by WWFC..excellent  team spirit. Accurate passing and off the ball running.

This remarkable game became a goal-fest, as Bolehall became  increasingly  despondent and frustrated which eventually blew up in the final minutes of a one sided game.

There’s always good footy at Walsall Wood, and it’s great to welcome Pelsall Villa to the stable.

Walsall Wood FC conquer Cradley

Images Kindly supplied by Simon Evans

I’m a bit behind with football stuff – sorry folks. Prepare for a rash of incoming ball-chaser news and reviews.

Last weekend Saturday, 23rd September 2017, Walsall Wood travelled over to Cradley, ironically enough a place I’d been the day before – small world, really – anyway, the Wood lads comfortably beat the chain maker lads, and Simon Evans was there to catch the action, and supplied the following report:

Cradley Town 0 v 2 Walsall Wood

Cradley started the brighter, but the Wood soon found their feet. First a lob by Butlin went wide, then after a great run, Boycey cut inside. His shot also going wide. Cradeley countered but some great defending from slater thwarted them. Soon after Wood made a sub, Slater went off after picking up an injury, Callum McFarlane replacing him. Sullivan then had the next best chance for Wood but the shot was just wide. Wood were now in full force, Westwood with an effort just wide Butlin with a header at the keeper. Cradley then countered but some great tackling from Deakin thwarted them. With half time approaching, a speculative left foot shot from Campion found the back of the net.

Half time: Cradley 0 v 1 Walsall Wood

The second half saw Wood make another enforced substitution, Campion was replaced by Lewis Hayden. Cradley still searching for an equaliser, Deakin went on a lazy run, his curling cross clipped the crossbar. Peter Till then manoeuvred himself a half chance, but his effort produced a save by the Cradley keeper. Cradley countered but the cross was well claimed by Ransome in the Wood goal. Soon after some great play by Till who fed Westwood, his shot found the back of the net. The Wood went two up.

Boycey then forced the Cradley keeper to fumble his cross for a corner. Then a red card for the Cradley player, two yellow cards in succession.

Butlin then found Sullivan with a great pass, Sullivan cut inside but the shot was just over the bar. Wood soon made final substitution, Boycey replaced by Harry Harris.

Till then forced the Cradley keeper to save, the rebound fell to Tolley but the effort was just over the bar. The last action of the match saw McFarlane force the Cradley keeper to another fine save, Till with the follow up just over the bar. Cradley did try to get a consolation, but the Wood saw the final few minutes out

Full time: Cradley 0 v 2 Walsall Wood

Thanks to Simon for the report and pictures, and sorry they were so late! Apologies.

Remember folks, it’s all For the Good of The Wood!

The Memo – what’s going on?

the_memo

The Memo in Brownhills.

I’ve been contacted by some very worried users of the Memorial Hall or ‘Memo’ in Lichfield Road, Brownhills who are quite surprised by recent developments there.

It seems new management have taken charge, and familiar faces who worked hard to build up the profile and community engagement of the facility are apparently no longer involved.

The sudden changes have surprised many of the users of the hall, who are interested in the future of an institution with such a wonderful community history, created for the use of the wider Brownhills community.

Perhaps if the current management would like to get in touch and make a statement regarding the situation it might be a good idea, and help reassure their clients and supporters.

A large number of Brownhills people read this blog. This is your chance to address them directly.

Mail me on BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Fancy a coffee in Brownhills? A business is reborn!

I’m looking forward to trying this place out! Image from Emily’s Coffee House and Grill Facebook page.

Many regulars in Brownhills High Street will have noticed the sad, recent closure of the popular Brownhills Coffee House and Grill which had to shut following the unfortunate illness of Matt, the previous owner – thankfully Matt is now making a good recovery, but he has decided to hand on control of the High Street cafe, which reopened today, Friday 29th September 2017.

Emily and her team welcome you to a new, yet reassuringly familiar business! Image Kindly supplied by Emily Ashe.

The Coffee House and Grill is now operated by Emily and Gus, who’d like to welcome you to the rejuvenated eatery:

Work has been progressing well on our little refit at Emily’s Coffee House & Grill and we’re delighted to announce that we will be opening our doors this Friday.

Pop in and say “Hello” and treat yourself to a tasty full English, a delicious snack or full on home cooked carvery.

We will be open Sundays too for our well known Sunday Roasts.

We look forward to welcoming customers old and new

Emily, Helen & Gus x

They have a Facebook page here.

Oh gosh, look at those cakes! Bob heaven… Image supplied by Emily Ashe.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Emily and Gus to Brownhills, and wish them all the best in their new venture – I will certainly be popping in for a butty or two and  a good brew, and I suggest readers do too.

People frequently moan about Brownhills High Street, but it has some excellent traders running some great, independent businesses, well worthy of your support.

See you there?

Get your car washed this Saturday in aid of the Walsall Wood Remembrance Appeal!

Go on, give the kids your support!

With all this grim weather, our cars are all looking a bit grubby at the moment – instead of popping to MacWarreners or Holland Park Garage this weekend for a wash and polish, why not take your motor to St Johns Church at Walsall Wood, where Lee Bragginton and the Walsall Wood Scouts will be washing your pride and joy in aid of the Walsall Wood Remembrance Appeal?

They’re a great bunch of kids, and there are sure to be big laughs and clean motors all over the shop. Wonder if they stretch to bicycles?

The Remembrance Parade Appeal is very important, as I’ve covered here before, and I’ll repeat the appeal post  below, in case you can’t make the car wash or don’t have a car!

Please, if you can, support the youth of Walsall Wood as they work to protect a long tradition in the area. They really are a smashing, kind-hearted bunch.

Here’s a very important appeal from Lee Bragginton of the 1st Walsall Wood Scout Group, who like all other folks involved with local Remembrance Parades, is appealing for help and donations so the Walsall Wood Parade can take place this year.

Options are available for individual donations online or by post, and Lee is also interested in any businesses locally who may be able to assist with sponsorship or other means.

Walsall Wood is unique in the area in being the only afternoon parade and one of the few that has no associated British Legion help.

The rights and wrongs of the current situation have been gone over many times, but we are where we are and donations are required. For my take on this situation, see this post and those linked from it.

Lee said:

Bob

Like other parades in the Walsall Borough, Walsall Wood parade needs to raise funds in order to continue in it’s traditional format.

Unlike other parades however, we have no Royal British Legion involvement in our parade and it is organised and funded by the youth organisations themselves.

We welcome any contact from any local businesses, organisations and individuals who may be willing to support our cause in any way.

See details of how to help below.

We will be holding a joint youth organisation fundraising car wash later in the year towards the parade.  Details will follow.

Thanks

Stuck in a rut – beware, folks – the deer are getting horny….

The above excellent video is a fallow deer stag filmed up on Cannock Chase by reader, contributor and top friend of the blog Peter Barker. That stag really has romance on his mind…

This is just a quick note to warn people given to exploring the open spaces of the area that over the next 8-10 weeks or so the deer population will be getting amorous – it’s rutting time for our large brown friends, and that means one thing: the heaths around Brownhills, Clayhanger, Pelsall and Chasewater in particular are likely to be host to rather grumpy, aggressive stags guarding their female harems.

Deer are normally gentle souls on the whole, but a hormonal stag with love on his mind will be aggressive and prone to attack, and such animals will, and have in the past charged humans and gored dogs.

To avoid being on the unexpectedly rather sharp end of several hundredweight of cervine cassinova with an attitude issue, please keep a respectful distance and keep your dogs under control at all times. Even if they look like they’re just loafing, these normally docile creatures can turn nasty at a moments notice. This warning applies to anywhere where deer have been spotted – from the heaths of Chasewater to the commons and woods of Brownhills, Jockey Meadows, Clayhanger Marsh and even Sandhills – and now they’re as far south as Sutton and even Brookvale Park in Witton!

Deer are not the cleverest of animals, so it might also be wise to take extra care when driving, as the biological imperative is probably outweighing their small amount of road sense at the moment. That excellent local wildlife blogger Chaz Mason posted this warning  last year, that’s still very much relevant:

N.Tipton 1

Image by Neil Tipton, originally posted on Chaz Mason’s blog.

This week I have been informed that the young male Red Deer have commenced play-fighting locally – by now you should all be aware that this is the first indication that the annual Red Deer Rut is now underway and within the next couple of weeks the older stags are likely to become more territorial.

DOG WALKERS PLEASE!

If you are over the Marsh and Mere for the next couple of months please keep your dog close and if you see any deer PLEASE put your dog on a lead.

I am not in the least bit worried about the deer. For most of the year they will see your dog and run away as fast as they can – but that ain’t now!

These stags are main-lining on testosterone and WILL NOT RUN AWAY. In fact they will not only stand their ground to protect their females they will attack your dog. Over the years I have been aware of at least three instances of local dogs being stabbed by Stags, luckily, so far with injuries-only and no fatalities.

20141001EOS-7D0866-as-Smart-Object-3

Would you argue with this? Image by Derek Lees, originally posted on Chaz Mason’s blog.

If you insist on exercising your dogs right to run free and unhindered then please exercise that right somewhere else until at least late November.

As I have tried to impress upon you –
this is not to protect the deer – IT IS TO PROTECT YOUR DOG!

I may not have a dog but I do have great affection for them and many of you know that I regularly time-share many of yours so I hope that you take this warning very seriously. Rutting Deer are a magnificent sight but if you want to watch this display, then please show some respect for the animals and also, some common sense.

Lecture over – Chaz

Of course, once the aggression is over for another year, the commons and heaths will again be given over to the disgusting and lewd mating behaviour one normally sees there. The animals, however, will be behaving impeccably.

Walsall Council act to resolve local confusion over bin collection change

Residents are advised to stay calm and not take matters into their own hands. Image by Steve Hill.

Hey up people – it seems that in November, there’s a shakeup of of local bin collection days in the Northern Wastes and to this end Walsall Council have been delivering leaflets notifying residents of the changes, which is fair enough.

The changes are occurring as in a drive to further cut costs, the binmen will be working longer days meaning less wagons will bee required, but sadly this means reorganising the rounds, too.

You can find out more about the reasons for the change here.

Sadly, there’s been a bit of a cockup in Walsall Wood and some homes have had two different leaflets delivered, stating different collection dates.

Clean and Green at Walsall Council yesterday put out the following grease to hopefully resolve the confusion caused:

Some properties in Walsall Wood may have received two new bin collection calendars today. We are sorry and are trying to get to all affected properties to retrieve incorrect leaflets.

If you live in one of the following streets, and have received two leaflets – please follow the Tuesday calendar:

  • Andrews Road
  • Arbor Gate
  • Blackberry Lane
  • Fereday Road
  • Gwendoline Way
  • Hill Park
  • Holly Lane
  • Lawnswood Drive
  • Naomi Way
  • New Wood Grove
  • Poxon Road
  • Sally Ward Drive
  • Salters Road (half of)
  • Shire Ridge
  • Simkins Close
  • Stackhouse Close
  • Swallowdale
  • Weatheroak
  • Wolverson Road

Apologies for any confusion caused 😊

Collection dates will be updated on www.walsallbins.co.uk soon.

Before we get the usual chorus of indignation, moaning and gnashing, it’s an honest mistake and these things happen. To date there have been no casualties and the country has remained stable. Perspective is good…

If you’re confused as to which your collection day actually is, click here to use the postcode checker on the council website – it works a treat and will tell you exactly when to put out which bin, and as we get nearer the November changeover, will cover it.

Hope that helps clarify things – folks seem to get a bit worked up about bin collections…

From seven to ten – can you solve a local mystery?

So where in Lichfield Road was ‘Ten Row’? This 1884 1:10,000 mapping shows a ‘Seven House Row’ – some confusion, perhaps? Click for a larger version.Image from NLS archive.

Reader Adam Hill has been in touch with a very interesting question related to house names on the Lichfield Road, Brownhills, after studying his Grandmother’s birth certificate from 1916.

Adam wrote:

Hello Bob

I have just recently came in to possession of my Gradmothers birth certificate, it lists her place of birth as being 10 Row, off of Lichfield Road, Brownhills. However I can’t seem to locate this location on Google Earth and there does not seem to be info online either pertaining to said location.

My Great Grandfather was a Miner and am wondering if this was property cheaply built specifically for the Miners and hencevbo longer being there. Can anyone help with any information they may know. My Grandmother was born 1916, so that is the time period am looking for.

Thanks.

My first reaction was there must be a word missing in ’10 Row’, then looked at the mapping of the time, and found something odd – there is a row of terraces marked on the 1884 1:10,000 map called ‘Seven House Row’ – note the difference to the current ‘Severn House’ near Silver Court.

This begs the question why Seven House Row? From the map, there are clearly seven dwellings – so was there a later row of ten? I can’t find such an arrangement on mapping of the day, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t exist.

Can anyone help please? If you can, please comment here out mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks – and cheers to Adam Hill for a very interesting enquiry.

This 1915 1:2,500 mapping shows a lot of houses sprouting up on Lichfield Road, but no rows of ten, although ‘Seven House Row’ is still there, but unnamed on the map. Click for a larger version. Image from NLS archive.

Join the Friends of Chasewater for a coffee this Friday!

Macmillan are my favourite charity, and so very close to my heart.

That there Kate Cardigan from Lichfield Lore has been in touch to say that her new Friends of Chasewater group have a Macmillan Coffee Morning at the Innovation Centre this Friday morning (29th September 2017) between 10am and 1pm.

Here’s your chance to pop in for a coffee, shoot the breeze, find out more about Chasewater and the Friends group and raise money for a great cause at the same time!

They also have organised a litter pick on Sunday 15th October, at which all will be welcome – more details to come on that nearer the time.

The idea of the Chasewater Friends is to get together and promote the park and it’s interests – these could be improvements, events, talks or anything that concerns our favourite country park.

To this end, Kate has set up a Facebook Group you can join here, but if you’re not into Facebook, she’s on Twitter here or if you prefer, drop me the word and I’ll hook you up.

tumblr_odp8f40m4n1qib2vgo7_1280

I adore Chasewater, and I know many of the readers do too. It’s time it was promoted better – can you help?

You can also get hold of Mrs. Cardigan in a variety of ways via her Lichfield Lore blog ‘About’ page here.

The Express & Star recently ran an appeal for members for the group, but seemed to omit how you could actually connect with them, so here you go.

The Express & Star wrote:

Chasewater in plea for volunteers

Volunteers are needed to help shape the future of an iconic beauty spot.

Chasewater Country Park is asking people to sign up to a new group called The Friends of Chasewater.

The group will be working on projects and ideas for the park and will receive help from members of the team at Chasewater where necessary.

Staffordshire County Council runs the park and said the friends group was a ‘great’ opportunity for people to work together to benefit the site. Helen Riley, deputy chief executive and the council’s director for families and communities, said: “The Friends of Chasewater is an exciting opportunity for members of the towns surrounding the park to come together and work on ideas and projects that benefit the community.

‘The Friends will take the lead on activities that local communities have said they want to see taking place at the park, and work with the Chasewater team to make the park a focal point for local people. It’s a really great opportunity for people with an interest in Chasewater to get directly involved with the park, so I’d urge anyone interested to join up.’

The group is expected to be similar to that of the Friends of Hednesford Park, which helps Cannock Chase District Council with projects and supports Hednesford Park.

Chasewater boasts a 90-hectare reservoir and plenty of green open space.

The Chasewater Innovation Centre provides visitor information, art and craft exhibitions by artists and a programme of summer holiday activities.

Teddy is looking for a special family – can you help?

I’ve been asked by serial blog quiz bandit and top local driving instructor Tony Jakman if I’d help him with his quest to regime a rather special tabby cat that Tony has recently rescued from being a stray.

I thing most of you know I adore cats, so I jumped at the chance to help this rather handsome, lovely lad.

Please read what Tony has to say below, and if you can help, either call him on the number posted below, comment on this post or mail me on BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

Please help Teddy if you can. I think this stripy lad has a lot of love to give! l

Thanks to Tony and Judy too for helping a cat in shall we say… reduced circumstances.

Tony Jakeman wrote:

Teddy is a handsome lat with a good colour and rather special stripes. Image supplied by Tony Jakeman.

This is Teddy

Teddy needs a special home with special people.

We think Teddy is only young, less than 2 years old. He’s been roaming near us in Aldridge for about 6 months. After no success with finding his owners we decided to adopt him ourselves. After having him neutered and microchipped routine blood tests showed that he has FIV, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.

This has serious consequences for Teddy and possibly other cats he comes in contact with. If he fights and bites another cat here’s a chance he can pass his infection on.

The more serious consequence for Teddy is that with a compromised immune system he’s more susceptible to picking up infections from other cats. Something simple that another cat would easily fight off could kill Teddy.

Images supplied by Tony Jakeman

What Teddy needs is a special home with special people who will help him lead a full and happy life. He’s very calm, friendly but a little nervous. He’s learnt that tickles are great and he’s relearning to play. Pictures don’t show what an adorable face he has and his fabulous markings. He really is a teddy bear of a cat.

Ideally he needs to be kept indoors in a home with no other cats or a home with another FIV cat. Contact with other cats or cat viruses in the environment are what he needs to avoid. He’s living with us at the moment and is happy in isolation. We have other cats. The hard choice we’ve had to make is that life with us is dangerous for him.

He has a bad mouth infection at the moment that will need ongoing monitoring and treatment.

We successfully homed an FIV positive cat a few years ago.

Teddy really needs his special new family to come forward.

If you think that might be you please contact us to discuss it

Pictures from the 2017 Huddlesford Heritage Gathering

So many boats, so much to see and do…

Yesterday (Saturday 23rd September 2017) I got chance to go to the first day of the Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust’s Heritage Gathering at Huddlesford, near Whittington.

If you’re reading this on Sunday, the show continues today (Sunday 24th September 2017), and is just four quid to get in. Bargain! Find out details in this post here.

The Heritage Gathering is by a country mile the best canal do I’ve ever been to, even beating Pelsall’s wonderful events a few years ago.

You just can’t beat boater dogs.

I found loads of vintage vehicles, stalls, good food, music, arena displays, a very decent bar, some excellent cake – and wonderful boats with a huge selection of floating traders along the canal itself.

But as always at these events, it was the characters that made it, both human and canine.

I’ll certainly be going to this biannual event again – and best wishes to the Lichfield and Hatherton Trust, who staged a wonderful event to raise funds for a very important local history project.

It’s a gas… roadworks due in Brownhills, but not on the resurfaced part of High Street

Gas works will be taking place at this junction for about 6 weeks, which is what the signs on High Street are warning of. Image from Apple Maps.

In the last few days there has been a lot of consternation and misplaced anger about upcoming roadworks affecting traffic in Brownhills High Street and Ogley Road.

Here’s the deal: From Sunday 1st October 2017 until approximately 10th November 2017, Cadent Gas on behalf of National Grid will be replacing gas mains at the Ogley Road and High Street junction, adjacent to the former Warreners Arms pub.

There will traffic control in operation, closure of the junction and diversions throughout the works as appropriate, but some confusion seems to be occurring that the work will actually be on the High Street where it’s been resurfaced. This is not the case.

The facts:

  • The works take place from around 1st October 2017 to around 10th November 2017
  • They take place on the Ogley Road/A461 High Street Junction by the old Warreners Arms pub
  • The signs on the High Street are correct and are warning of an upcoming road closure AFFECTING THE HIGH STREET.
  • The signs are industry standard.
  • The Ogley Road/High Street junction is the site of a major and complex gas main junction, one half of which was refurbished a couple of years ago. This work is on the other half of it.
  • The resurfaced High Street will not be dug up as part of this. The work is nowhere near that section of the road.
  • It’s going to be a fun time with works at Streets Corner and Shire Oak also ongoing.
  • Please stop ranting at me, I’m trying to help here.

I appreciate this is frustrating, but work has to be done. The public notice for these works, as very helpfully sent to me by Mark Gorman, is included below, just so we’re all clear.

I have received, and dealt with, a lot of angry messages about this in the last couple of days, many expressing outrage about the idiocy of traffic engineers supposedly destroying a recently resurfaced road.

I would politely observe that if your default position is to resort to outrage and blaming them without being in full possession of the facts, the problem isn’t traffic engineers really, is it?

For Walsall Council’s weekly list of scheduled upcoming roadworks, you can visit this page here and download a copy. Obviously, this won’t cover emergency work. If you can’t get the PDF link on that page, try a different device/browser.

I hope this clears things up a bit.

Closure notice as sent by Mark Gorman.

Just a quick note to point out that this Saturday 23 September 2017 there’s a rather unique event happening at Lock Five on the Birchills flightt of the Walsall Canal, which is being refurbished at the moment.

Lichfield and Hatherton’s huge canal Heritage Gathering is this weekend!

wpe1de599f_14_06

A wonderful day out in store for all! Image from Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust.

Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust are busy preparing for their Heritage Gathering call and vintage festival which is running on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend (23-24th September 2017), and takes place at their Huddlesford base, near Lichfield.

There will be boats, vintage and classic vehicles, stalls, food, displays and all the usual fun and games. This is a great show and previous years have been excellent, and well worth the visit.

I had a great time at the last of these previous events in 2015, and I’m looking forward to this one immensely. You can see a gallery of images from 2015s event at the foot of this post.

All funds raised will help support the canal restoration project, whose volunteers are currently beavering away on the route of the lost line between Barracks Lane, Ogley Hay and The Boat restaurant, on the Lichfield Road at Summerhill, opening the route for walkers, as well as the more general restoration work to restore the old canal, particularly at Borrowcop on the A51 at Lichfield.

If you’re into history, canals and craft, keep that weekend free!

Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust originally wrote on the excellent Lichfield Live!:

Heritage Gathering Highlights Vintage Boats And Classic Cars

Lichfield canal enthusiasts are hoping to emulate the success of 2015’s Huddlesford Heritage Gathering when this year’s event is held in September.

The gathering, held biennially and organised jointly by Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust and Lichfield Cruising Club, brings together historic boats, floating traders, private boats and classic vehicles, with exhibitors and displays on the field, near Huddlesford Junction on the Coventry Canal.

Fun for all the family includes Emma’s Crafty Kids, funded through the Staffordshire Community Foundation, boat trips and rides on a steam train and a traction engine, face-painting, and the chance to operate one of the Trust’s diggers.

A host of entertainers will be providing music on stage throughout the weekend, with tickets sold separately for an evening event featuring Wildfire Folk and Chase Mist and including a pig roast.

Budding musicians can book themselves in for one or two 15-minute sessions at Busker’s Corner on either or both the days.

Floating traders will be offering everything from home brew to cheese and antiques to sweets, while exhibitors on the field and in the marquee will be showing off jewellery, leather goods, farm and garden produce and a variety of arts and craft.

There will also be a chance to see a display of birds of prey and to meet some weird and wonderful wildlife.

Music, entertainment, food and a bar will be available all day, and a Sunday service will be held at 9.30am by the Boaters Christian Fellowship led by David Litchfield.

Huddlesford Heritage Gathering will be open to the public on September 23 and 24,  from 10am. Admission is £4 with children under 12 free if accompanied by an adult. Tickets for the evening entertainment will be sold separately for £15. Car parking is free.

Walsall Wood Reserves bested by Browmsgrove

Another fine game at Oak Park in the shadow of the pit-head. Image Kindly supplied;lied by David Evans.

While I’m clearing the football backlog, there’s a great review here from Simon Evans of the Reserve Team match that took place at Oak Park last Saturday, 17th September 2017 which saw the visitors beat the home side two-one.

Simon watched the match and enjoyed what he saw:

I’ve managed to do a quick report from Woods reserve match from Saturday. Unfortunately I don’t know any of the players names / scorers .

Reserves Challenge Trophy
Wood 1 v 2 Bromsgrove

From the kick off both teams went on the attack.  From the off both teams were determined to play football. The first real chance came on 13 minutes, Bromsgrove forcing the Wood keeper to make a great save. The resulting corner came to nothing. Woods first chance came soon after but some great defending and the chance went away. Bromsgrove threatened again some resolute Wood defending and the chance went.

Halftime: nil-nil

The second half started as the first half ended, both teams going for it. The deadlock was very nearly broken, but Bromsgrove shot was cleared off the line. Wood went straight up the other end and a deft header hit the Bromsgrove post, the ball was then cleared. After 67 mins a Wood attack was ended by  clumsy challenge in the box. The resulting penalty was despatched. One-nil to the WoodBromsgrove were soon on level terms, a smart finish from inside the box. One-one.

Both teams went for it, but some resolute defending from both teams kept the score at one-one. Bromsgrove then scored the all important winner, a through ball and the Bromsgrove striker beat the offside trap, his shot was going in but unfortunately the Wood defender got the last touch one-two.

Wood rallied and piled on the pressure for an equalising goal which didn’t materialise.

A great game with both teams playing the right way

There’s always good footy at Walsall Wood, and it’s great to see the Reserves getting some attention. Thanks to Simon for the report!

Walsall Wood Under 18s: Another great win, and an apology

I hear the team have a new sponsor – looking good, lads! Image supplied by Dylan Somel.

My apologies to the Walsall Wood Under 18s team and their manager Dylan Somel, who this week asked me to advertise their away match on Tuesday 19th September 2017 against Romulus Youth, and I misread the email as Thursday, not Tuesday – bad Bob, s sorry for that one.

The good news is that the Wood under 18s beat Romulus convincingly with a four-one victory taking them through to the next round of the FA Youth Cup. Well done lads.

Once again my apologies for being useless there.

If you want to know more about the Under 18s team and are interested in joining (or know a lad who might be) team manager, Dylan Somel had this to say:

This year Walsall Wood Football Club are implementing youth side, who will play in the Midland Floodlit League. This has been made possible with the support from the youth section at the club and also George and Justin, who have made a great platform for the lads to succeed under the Wood banner.

Wood crushes Chelmsley

Images Kindly supplied by the young David Evans – sadly the light was too poor for decent action shots.

A stonking home  win for Walsall Wood again last Tuesday evening (19th September 2017) as the Wood lads consolidated their domination of Chelmsley Town, this time on the real turf of Walsall Wood.

Bill Shaw was there, and enjoyed a great match.

Hiya Bob,

This really was a stroll in the park for Wood, Saturday’s game will be a different kettle of fish as they look to put their season back on track.  Suffice to say you can only beat what’s in front of you, but Town really aren’t very good.

PP League Cup
Walsall Wood 3 v 0 Chelmsley Town

Wood got back to winning ways progressing comfortably through to the next round. It took just eight minutes for Tony Clarke to open the scoring. Joey Butlin doubled the lead on 24 with Paul Sullivan wrapping up this stroll in the park on 87 minutes.

With just one minute gone Tony Clarke raced clear wide left, his low cross hit first time by Joey Butlin, keeper James Kelly at full stretch pushing the ball away. five minutes later Wood debutant Keenan Meakin-Richards played a through ball to find Clarke left of the box, he faded right, across the face of the box, Kelly blocking his low drive. The keeper was powerless two minutes later however as Lewis Taylor Boyce won the ball on halfway and fed Harry Harris who released Clarke into the box just right of centre, to run on and chip the ball over the stranded Kelly to put Wood ahead. three minutes later Craig Deakin wide right played the ball inside to Harris, his defence splitting ball was collected at pace by Clarke, his first time effort saved at the second attempt by Kelly.

On 18 minutes a long ball out of defence by Town saw Wood keeper Lloyd Ransome race from his area to kick clear from Jamie Barrett.

Three minutes later Callum McFarlane’s ball out of defence found Butlin, who seeing Deakin fly past him played the ball into his path, his low drive blocked by Harry Sweeney. Wood doubled their lead when on 24 minutes Harris delivered a left wing corner to the near post, Butlin skilfully touching the ball home from a very tight angle.

Town won a left wing corner on 31 minutes, Barrett saw his shot charged down, a bit of a scramble developed but the ball was eventually cleared.

Wood almost made it three when six minutes later a right wing run and cross by Deakin was headed goalwards by Clarke, Kelly at full stretch pushed the ball away, Butlin was first to react but his low drive was charged down by a posse of defenders.

A quiet start to the second half until on 56 minutes McFarlane won the ball in the centre and hit a lovely diagonal ball to find Deakin on the right edge of the box, his cracking volley flying just wide. five minutes later Darren Campion delivered a left wing free kick into the box, Butlin planting a header narrowly wide. 70 minutes gone, Butlin raced onto a right wing throw in powered into the box, his low near post drive superbly held by Kelly. It was Butlin again two minutes later, collecting a ball into the right of the box, only to fire wide of the near post.

On 77 minutes a superb five man one touch move through the centre carved open the visitors defence before the ball was played to Taylor Boyce on the right of the box to fire a first time effort inches over, a real pity as this would have been a contender for goal of the season. Wood kept up the pressure and on 85 minutes a McFarlane rising drive from the left edge of the box cannoned to safety off the bar with Kelly soundly beaten. two minutes later Taylor Boyce held the ball up cleverly in the centre of the box before feeding substitute Paul Sullivan who sidestepped two desperate challenges before passing the ball into the net.

After Saturday’s result Wood bounced back with a very comfortable win without having to get out of second gear. The FA Vase game at Cradley Town will be a harder task on Saturday as Wood look to put another unbeaten run together.

Bill Shaw

Traffic incident causing holdups in Brownhills this morning

Thanks to readers Mandy, Stephen and Philip I can share the information that there has been a road traffic accident in Brownhills this morning (Tuesday 19th September 2017) involving a car and a bus.

The collision between a Travel West Midlands double decker bus running the 10 service and an Audi took place near the junction of Ogley Road and High Street at about 8:20am and delays and traffic congestion have been ongoing since.

Thankfully, nobody appears to have been hurt. My sympathies to all involved.

Cheers to all the readers who helped with this post.

A past landscape from a surprise source

Stubbers Green and Walsall Wood in 1964 from a recently discovered collection. Click for a larger version.

A quick post here with a real curiosity found by the young David Evans – an aerial image from 1964 of Stubbers Green and southern Walsall Wood showing the brickwork, tilers and marl workings that did so much to shape the current area today.

There’s a whole bunch of stuff to come from the source, which I won’t spoil yet, but for today, just marvel at the view of a very much plundered landscape, the rapacious quest for brick clay and aggregates changing the geography here forever; and and the little bits of social history that lurk in-between.

David Evans has studied the photo and had this to say:

A childhood memory from the early 1950s, of sitting by Coppice Lane  and looking down into a huge quarry, seeing the digger and dumper trucks at work..the dumper truck labouring up a slope track out of the clayhole..

You can see the road, half way down the right of the image, heading across the image,  and the quarry, below the road and at the right-hand side of the image.

Just visible above the road and at the extreme right hand side..the rectangular Vigo Pool which was a dangerous yet irresistible place for youngsters…. Cloudy waters, sheer sides, and a raft made from two scaffolding planks.

Centre left is the quarry where a big unexploded Second World War bomb was unearthed by a hapless digger operator…

Just out of shot and to the right was the Vigo brickworks with its  tall square chimney belching out smoke that drifted across the area to the distaste of the ladies whose washing hung out to dry in the back gardens of the houses in Walsall Wood.

You can also see a railway track and raised loading platform from the kilns.

I notice at the right hand edge of the image are the lines of pre-fab bungalows beside ‘Paddys Graveyard’, the Irish part of the cemetery, by the railway track in Vigo Road.

To the upper left, in shadow, are the Coppy woods with the Jockey Meadows and Bullings Heath.

This is a remarkable photo!

Kind regards
David

Thanks to David for finding and illuminating a remarkable thing, and I’m sure this will provoke a lot of comment – either do so here on this post directly, or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

My thanks to David for genuinely leaving me speechless. Just when you thought you’d found pretty much everything…

Picture this – A lovely, local thing

Derek Morris took this astoundingly beautiful, prize-winning image on his phone at Shire Oak Nature Reserve. It’s absolutely gorgeous. Thank you.

Everyone who reads this blog will know I love and prize several things above most others – the love of the outdoors, an eye for natural beauty and human creativity, however that manifests itself.

Over the past few weeks, there’s been a wonderful thing been going on that has delighted and surprised me.

Debbie Etches and the members and admins of the Shire Oak group on Facebook – a small,  friendly residents group for the area in south Brownhills – held a photo competition, with the prize being a meal at the Shire Oak Pub.

The only remit was that the photos should show something of the local area – and from the gallery below, I think you’ll agree the entries are stunning  and they are by turns beautiful, charming and very well taken.

There have been some great entries, and the winner by Derek Morris – of a wee lass and her dog off to explore the park – is genuinely stunning. I really, really love the image, as it doesn’t matter that the subjects are facing away from the camera – it’s the essence; that childhood eagerness and friendship in a beautiful local place. Just brilliant.

I asked to feature the images here as they’re so lovely I thought more folk should see them.

I’d like to thank everyone who took part for genuinely brightening my days as I looked at the latest entries as they were posted. I love to see how others perceive the world and this was a wonderful bit of sunshine in a rather grey autumn.

Apologies to any I’ve missed or miscredited – if I’ve dropped a goolie or missed anyone out, just shout up. Comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail do com. Thanks

Dog walkers beware – possible bait found on Clayhanger Common again

tumblr_n6kf4jIWwM1qib2vgo3_1280

Clayhanger Common and other local heaths and open spaces are very popular with dog walkers. Take care, people, there are some morons about.

Reader Andrea Atterbury has been in touch to warn readers that items of what is believed to be meat bait have been recently found on Clayhanger Common including pig’s trotters, leading to renewed fears that poisoned lures may be being placed on the common again.

Andrea wrote:

Hi,

It has been noted that fresh meat, pigs trotters, have been found on the spot in Clayhanger.

There is concern that these may contain poison, as a dead fox and dead cat have recently been found in the same area.

Please warn all dog walkers, just in case. It has happened before.

Andrea

In January 2016 the local media carried a story from a lady mourning her dog whom she believed ate poisoned meat whilst being walked on Clayhanger Common and warned other dog lovers to beware – a number of other suspicious finds occurred, including a lucky escape for Baxter the dog leading to concerns that someone may well be trying to poison foxes or birds of prey there.

There are periodic reports of this kind of thing; in 2015 there were a series of reported incidents in Pelsall that caused great concern. If you walk your dog on commons and heaths locally, keep an eye on them and be aware of anything they show particular interest in.

I can’t imagine what’s going through the head of anyone who would do such a thing. Just awful.

Feisty Leicester send Woodmen up the road

The Leicester Road ground: A great venue. Image from Travel Blog.

Walsall Wood FC yesterday ventured out to Leicester Road FC, hopefully to continue their 100% league run – but the Leicester lads had other ideas.

Bill Shaw was there, and wasn’t amused with the Woodmen’s performance:

Hiya Bob,

A frustrating 90 minutes for Wood as they surrendered their 100% league record to a hardworking, well organised Leicester Road, as they failed to score in the league for the first time this season.

A test of character now as they look to bounce back on Tuesday night with a visit by Chelmsley Town in the League Cup.

Leicester Road 2 v 0 Walsall Wood

Wood were beaten for the first time in the league as they turned in a strangely lacklustre performance. Leicester Road halted a run of defeats that had seen them drop to 12th in the table but in the end they won comfortably as Wood failed to score in the league for the first time this season.

After just a minute Wood gave away a right wing free kick that was flicked on to Matt Langham to turn and shoot, Lloyd Ransome with an easy save. Two minutes later Nuno Gomes raced into the left of the box, checked back inside, his low drive well held by Ransome.

On seven minutes skipper Darren Campion broke up a home attack, played the ball up the left to find Joey Butlin, his ball inside found Paul Sullivan in the left of the box, Callum Rudd making a superbly timed tackle.

A minute later Gomes got clear on the left, went across the face of the box to find Jake Holt on the right, his cross headed just over by skipper Greg Downes.

On 12 minutes a Wood right wing corner was headed out to Andy Westwood to fire first time just over.

With 27 minutes gone a long ball forward wide left found Langham, he cut inside and hit a cross beyond the far post that was met with a Downes diving header that was held at full stretch by Ransome.

Three minutes later a right wing throw found Sullivan in the box, his touch back found Peter Till who fired in a low drive to bring a full length save from keeper Will Highland. On 38 minutes Craig Deakin combined cleverly with Till wide right before crossing into the centre, Rudd cutting out the ball to deny Sullivan. Two minutes later a right wing corner was headed back across goal by Mitch Tolley, Sullivan putting a header fractionally over.

On 41 minutes a loose ball forward was collected by Gomes right of the box, his rising first time effort cannoning off the bar.

Wood carved open the home defence a minute into the second half, a right wing throw found Butlin who played Lewis Taylor Boyce into the box, his through ball found Sullivan in the centre of the box but under intense pressure he fired wide of the left hand post. Five minutes later Deakin delivered a right wing corner, the ball came back to him on the apex of the box, his vicious cross shot pushed away from under his bar by Highland.  The turning point of the game came on 61 minutes, a measured through ball by Jordan Fitzpatrick saw Sullivan reach the ball a split second before Highland who dived at his feet, Sullivan running on to score into the empty net, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul on the keeper, an appalling decision.

After lengthy treatment to the keeper the game continued, the ball was launched up the other end, Holt racing into the left of the box only to be stopped by a superbly timed tackle by Deakin.  The breakthrough came on 74 minutes, a right wing free kick was half cleared to Downes 25 yards out, his low drive through a packed area just inside the left hand post. Two minutes later Langham was strong in centre midfield, cleverly fed Sam Munton wide right who cut inside, hit a low drive that was pushed away by Ransome at full stretch.

Three minutes later Sullivan played a one-two wide left with Till, his cross headed goalwards by Tony Clarke but Highland saved comfortably.

Wood chasing the equaliser were caught out on 86 minutes, a ball out of defence was played over the top of the Wood back line, Gomes first to react, racing for goal and calmly slotting home to condemn Wood to their first league defeat of the season.

A minute from time Fitzpatrick found Sullivan on the left edge of the box, he turned cleverly and his rising drive was tipped over by Highland.

Wood huffed and puffed but were frustrated by a hard working defence who creaked alarmingly at times but held out to record the victory that puts their season back on track.

Wood are at home to Chelmsley Town in the League Cup on Tuesday 19th, travel to Cradley Town in the FA Vase on Saturday before returning to league action with a trip to Racing Club Warwick on Saturday 30th.

The Shoulder of Mutton, and two local family histories: What do you know?

Untitled 9

The Shoulder of Mutton – one of the oldest inns in Brownhills and a real community pub. Imagery from Bing! Maps.

I’ve had an enquiry in from reader Diane Clift regarding her family, the Danks, a connection with the Clifts and the Shoulder of Mutton pub in Church Road, Brownhills.

Diane wrote:

Hello Bob

Hello, wondering if you could help me or be able to point me in right direction.

I’m doing my family tree and I know I’m from the Danks line through a marriage between daughter and Clift.

All I know is my grandfather George Clift was born in the shoulder of mutton. Do you know anything about the Danks family .

Many thanks
Diane Painter

I don’t know an awful lot about the Shoulder of Mutton and it’s history, other than it was a Roberts pub, so all information gratefully received. I know we still have both Clifts and Danks families locally, so any help you can give would be welcome.

Please comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob t googlemmil dot com. Thanks, and cheers to Diane for an interesting enquiry.

Child injured in traffic accident near Castlefort School, Walsall Wood

The Castlefort Estate suffers serious congestion during the school run. Image from Apple Maps.

I’m aware of ongoing reports of a car accident involving a child in Blakemore Road, Walsall Wood near Castlefort School this morning (Friday 15th September 2017).

Reports from trusted locals say police and an air ambulance were in attendance and a child was taken by ambulance to hospital in Birmingham.

You can read a report on this by the Walsall Advertiser here.

Local police have said they are aware of the incident and the incident is over, but enquiries obviously continue.

I will bring you more information as and when I get it. Obviously when such an incident occurs, public speculation will be at a high but I would ask that in comments on social media and other places online readers are respectful of those involved until the facts are known.

West Midlands ambulance Service said:

We were called to Blakemore Road in Walsall Wood at 8.37am to reports of a car vs child incident.

Crews arrived to find a young female toddler with multiple injuries. She was treated by ambulance staff for a head injury, a nose injury and hip injuries.

She was immobilised with the use of a scoop stretcher and given pain relief before being taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital by land ambulance for further assessment.

The driver of the car was uninjured in the incident

My deepest sympathies and best wishes to the family and friends of the injured child.

Alex Ross, reporter with the Express & Star, has tweeted the following.

Thanks to reader Jane, Sarah and San Holden of the Walsall Advertiser for help.

Less than two weeks to go until Lichfield and Hatherton’s huge canal Heritage Gathering!

wpe1de599f_14_06

A wonderful day out in store for all! Image from Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust.

Lichfield and Hatherton Canal Restoration Trust are busy preparing for their Heritage Gathering call and vintage festival which is coming up over the weekend of 23-24th September 2017, and takes place at their Huddlesford base, near Lichfield.

Here’s what’s going on with the old Brownhills Market site

Work has started on ground operations at the former site of Brownhills Market in the Town Centre.

A very quick note as I’m a bit tied up elsewhere today but I’ve had a lot of people ask what’s happening with all the earthmoving gear and construction at the old Brownhills market site between Pier Street, Silver Street and the Methodist Church – it’s going to be the site of a new housing development.

The close of 32 dwellings will completely occupy the site of the former market, and will face on to Silver Street. A new junction will be constructed in place of the bend that currently exists in Silver Street, which will also join a new access road to the Kier development currently underway at Silver Court Gardens.

Outline planning permission for this has existed since the development at Silver Court Gardens was granted, as detailed here previously.

The details of the project were finally approved in July after a number of modifications proposed by planning officers, and is being undertaken by Lovell Homes.

The full, very detailed application documentation can be seen at Walsall Council’s Planning Portal here. Of particular interest will be the Decision Notice here and Design and Access Statement here.

I wholly support this development: Although the market was great in it’s day, it’s not coming back; markets are dying across the UK and the site has been empty for over five years. New homes here will help footfall for the High Street, make that area of Brownhills less open and windswept, and help the place seem more occupied and less lonely at night.

If you have any comments, feel free: either on this post or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

Hoe the development at the former market site will look. Plan from Walsall’s Planning Portal. Click for a larger image.

The Friends of Brownhills Common – September 2017 meeting tonight!

38703574

We all love the common, but its management has proven controversial. Why not pop along to the meeting and discuss the issues with the experts and other users?

Here’s one for people interested in the issues surrounding Brownhills Common – theres a meeting tonight (Monday 11th September 2017) of the Freinds of Brownhills Common group at the Environmental Depot, 200 Pelsall Road, Brownhills – WS8 7EN – please meet in the reception by 7:00pm.

Brownhills Common needs a good active friends group and this is your opportunity to join in and have your say in shaping the future management of the open space we all love.

The meeting is also open to the general public who may not wish to join the friends group, but are encouraged to attend and hear what everyone has to say.

It’s important that we recognise what a valuable, fragile and important habitat Brownhills Common is, and why it requires careful and measured stewardship.

You can read the minutes of the last meeting here.

If you’ve only heard the alarmists, it’s a good opportunity to go out and meet, talk and listen to people who understand the issues and want to preserve the wildlife, and to help shape the future of Brownhills’ greatest asset.

Strolling again!

This is a wonderful thing. If you have a wee one or two, and time to spare, come along and join in!

I’ve always supported the wonderful parent and toddler walking and social group that took place weekly at Chasewater – Chasewater Strollers, which grew via the human dynamo of Esther Allen and others into the wonderful Spark movement in Burntwood – well, the original Stroller group is relaunching this Monday, 11th September 2017.

The whole Burntwood Spark thing and the Strollers it grew from are an example to us all of how direct community activism can work and build friendship, solidarity and support and I admire  them and all involved hugely.

Esther and Rachel have said this about the relaunch of the Chasewater Strollers:

Hi Bob

I am very pleased to let you know we will be re-launching Chasewater Strollers on Monday 11th September. I will be back with baby number 2! If you fancy enjoying the beauty on our doorstep, getting some fresh air and exercise whilst having a natter on the way then we’d love you to join us. Buggies, slings whatever’s your thing!

We meet from 9:30ish and set off walking from St. Anne’s Church Chasetown promptly at 9:45. We walk a loop of Chasewater which takes about an hour, then we have a small stay and play, while we have a drink and snack. You can either come for just the walk or stay for all of it. Babies and children of any age welcome just be aware we don’t go at a toddler pace, so some form of wheeled transport or carrier is a good idea, as little legs struggle with the 3 miles.

There is parking at the Church, or buses stop at the bottom of Chasetown High Street. Don’t forget your raincover and sunshade (you never know!) There are various places to stop on the way around if you need to use a baby change.

So exercise, company, play for little ones and beautiful nature. What’s not to love? If you’re new or returning, we’d love to see you. Grandparents, carers, childminders, friends, all welcome. 🙂 I have many happy memories and lovely friends made from Strollers so can’t wait to get back strolling again!

Esther and Rachel x

They have a new group: Chasewater Strollers 2017 on Facebook

You can also mail them: chasewaterstrollers@outlook.com

Any questions please send them an email or Facebook message. Otherwise just turn up and you will be made very welcome!

Walsall Wood Under 18s battle Racing Warwick for a good win

A great image of match preparations posted on twitter by the @Wood18s account.

Simon Evans, deputising for the young old fella David who’s away, has sent a great report from last week’s Under 18s away match (Wednesday 6th September 2017) between Walsall Wood Under 18s and Racing Warwick Under 18s – and he witnessed a great match which the Wood lads won three goals to two.

For future reference, it’s worth following along with mach commentaries on Twatter: Usually one of the club official account @WalsallWoodFC here, or @Wood18s here or Simon Evans himself @Sy968 here are doing excellent coverage during matches. Thanks, chaps!

Simon wrote:

Walsall Wood reached the next round of the FA Youth club after a 3-2 victory away at Racing Warwick

Wood started brightly forcing corners and creating chances in the first few minutes. After 19 minutes Wood scored, but the linesman flagged for offside. Wood created more chances forcing the Warwick keeper making a couple of fine saves. After 43 minutes, Warwick took the lead, Woods shot finding the corner after. Straight from the kick off Wood went on the attack and were rewarded immediately when Hall’s shot found the back of the net. Soon after the ref blew for half time.

The second half started in the same, Wood probing for the second goal which soon came. After 55 mins a free kick was firmly headed into the net by Graham. Almost immediately Warwick created a chance, but the header was just over the bar. After 78 mins a Wood corner was bundled home by Hall. Wood now 3-1 up. Next up to test the Warwick  keeper was the Wood sub who’s curling effort was just over the bar. Warwick still created chances, forcing the Wood keeper to make some fine saves, and some great defending kept them out. After 88 mins, Warwick were awarded a penalty which Nelson converted. 2-3. It set up a grandstand finish, Warwick going for an equaliser, resolute defending by Wood kept them out.

In the end Wood held out for a victory and progression into the next round.

Simon Evans

Thanks to Simon for a great report, much appreciated – for The Good of the Wood!

A remedy to the shortage of water

chasetown 3

A remarkable, and beautifully scanned image from Ruth Penrhyn-Lowe. Click for a full-size version.

Several times over the previous eight years of this blog the question of the function and decommissioning of the steam pump that once stood at Chasewater has cropped up, and always provokes interesting debate – well, reader Ian James has been in touch with a snippet of information he’s found in a book relating to the long gone pumping plant.

The reservoir, you’ll recall, was built to (and still does) feed the local canal network with water, as every time a lock is used, water is lost downhill. The pump seems to have recovered water back into the main reservoir when excess was available.

The engine in question stood near the dam houses that still exist today, between them and the small overflow pool called the ‘Nine Foot’ (so called because of the depth gauge that used to sit in it).

It can be seen on this map section from 1882 (top left):

1882 1:2,500 mapping of the Chasewater Dam and Anglesey Basin area. The pump house is upper left. Click for a larger version. Imagery from the National Library of Scotland archive.

There has been a lot of debate about this subject in the past, and courtesy of reader and contributor Ruth Penrhyn-Lowe I was able to share a remarkable postcard, which gave far more detail than previously seen. That can be seen at the head of this post.

We established over the years that several local mines discharged water into the local canal, and when levels were high, this waster was returned to Chasewater (then called ‘Cannock Chase Reservoir’ or more commonly ‘Norton Pool’). I’m not sure where I gained the information but I’m pretty sure that one mine owner even charged Birmingham Canal Navigations for the water supplied!

The new contribution clarifies the point well, as well as giving the definitive answer as to what became of the engine. Ian wrote:

Bob,

Some eons ago, there was a question on your superb website about the Pumping Station at Chasewater asking for information.

I came across the attached copies out of a book and it can still be found on Ebay and Abe.  And something called a library?

1912 1:2,500 mapping of the Chasewater Dam and Anglesey Basin area. Note considerable civil engineering has taken place by now, with a breakwater, constructed embankments around the Nine-Foot and the curious ‘Rain Gauge’ by the basin. I wonder if this was in response to a failure or storm event? . Click for a larger version. Imagery from the National Library of Scotland archive.

Sorry about the quality, it’s a copy of copy at the very least.

It seems that each stretch of canal is at a known height above mean sea level, ours is 473 ft in old money.

Some of the maps label an aquaduct and the picture from the Nine Foot pool show the pipe across the the Valve House.  I guess they just dropped the water down there and, with the valves closed, the water went back in to the reservoir.

I’m really interested in this: the image and map (this section from the 1915 1:2,500 OS above) seem to show the ‘aqueduct’ output of the pump house going to the (still extant) thrupenny bit valve-house. Imagery from the National Library of Scotland Archive.

A couple of sections of the brick pillars beneath the elevated pipe are still on the property as well as the base of one pillar.

They sure made things to last in those days. I really wish they had left notes for the new dam engineers.

Regards
Ian James

Thanks to Ian for an excellent and most valuable contribution, which I’m sure will interest readers and prompt yet more discussion.

Background can be found in this article, and this one too. Readers may also like to gen up by reading this exploration as well.

If you have a view (and who doesn’t?) please do comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Thanks.

Lichfield Waterworks Trust – September 2017 public meeting this Monday

P1120641

Sandfields Pumping Station – a great historic building with immense history and social significance – not just to Lichfield, but to the Black Country. Lichfield Discovered and local historian Dave Moore have saved this valuable asset for the community.

Sandfields Pumping Station champion and public historian extraordinaire Dave Moore has been in touch to let me know that this Monday evening (11th September 2017) there will be the September 2017 Public Meeting of the Lichfield Waterworks Trust charity, formerly the Friends of Sandfields Pumping Station group.

The meeting is at the Bowling Green pub, Lichfield from 7:30pm and is of course open to anyone interested.

Dave wrote:

The Bowling Green serves some great food and real ales.

This is an incredibly exciting community heritage project, so do come along and become involved, we make everyone welcome.

Notes of the August 2016 Meeting are here

News

There have been a number of attempts by vandals trying to gain unauthorised access to the building and unfortunately, they were successful on one occasion. They emptied washing up liquid on the staircases and emptied out any containers of sugar, bleach and cleaning liquid on the floors. Fortunately, the Friday working Team soon made quick work of the mess and we feel we are back to normal operation now.

Many thanks to the Friday team.

Persimmon Homes ltd have arrange to improve the security on the 1960’s building.

The work groups are continuing with their sterling work on the building and the engine. A promising start indeed. It is really helpful that we carefully set aside, record and research each of the item in the pumping station now, as this builds a details picture of the past activity’s.

Work cleaning the engine is to show some remarkable progress as a reward for a lot of hard and dirty work.

We are always looking for more volunteers to help with this work. Onsite training and safety induction will be provided.

The bid team are working hard to put together a grant application for a feasibility study and have now submitted our application. The Architectural Heritage Fund Support Officer has raised a few questions about our application. The bid team are working on a response.

We have just commenced a Heritage Lottery Fund Resilient Heritage Grant application. Resilient Heritage is a grant that will help and support the trust in becoming more sustainable organisation, help us improve our skills in maintaining the heritage and support us with our community engagement.

Finally

Thank you everyone for your continued support and helping to make a difference in your community.

Do pop over to Dave Moore’s blog and check out the history of Sandfields Pumping Station, an almost forgotten gem – the group also has a Facebook page.

Dave is, of course, one of the leading lights of Lichfield Discovered, along with Kate ‘Cardigan’ Gomez from Lichfield Lore.

It’s great to see people like Dave encourage a better attitude to our historic buildings, rather than that which we seem to have here in Walsall, where we regard heritage architecture as merely ‘fuel’.

Please do attend if you’re able, it’s sure to be enlightening and educational.

Woodmen nearly burned by Barnt Spartak’s tactics

Highgate’s ground – never a place liked by Bill Shaw – was witness to a shock to the Woodmen’s system yesterday. Image from the Damage in the Box blog.

Yesterday, Saturday 9th September 2017 saw Walsall Wood travel to Highgate United’s ground in Shirley to square off against Division Two team Barnt Green Spartak – and what should have been a walk in the park… wasn’t.

Bill Shaw was there, and with uncomfortable echoes of the ill-fated Tividale match that saw Wood out of the FA Cup ringing in his ears, he filed this match report:

Hiya Bob,

Wood advanced into the next round but had to really work hard for the win, at times it reminded everyone of the Tividale FA Cup game and we know how that finished…

Patience and perseverance paid off in the end, with the Peter Till  71st minute goal, from then on there was only ever going to be one winner.

No midweek game for the first team, they visit the superb old Hinckley United ground on Saturday, a little drive down the A447 for me, see you all there.

F. A. Vase
Barnt Green Spartak 0 v 1 Walsall Wood

A spirited rearguard performance by lowly Division Two side Spartak saw them frustrate high flying Wood for 70 minutes until with the game moving towards a stalemate and extra time a piece of sublime skill by Peter Till saw him finally break the deadlock.

From the start it was all Wood, after just two minutes Paul Sullivan ran into the right of the box, lobbed the advancing keeper Colin Matthews, Aussie James Karanicholas getting back to hack the ball clear off the goal line. Three minutes later it was Sullivan wide left, swapping passes with Peter Till before firing in a low drive that was deflected narrowly wide.  To their credit Spartak kept the game tight closing Wood down all over the field until on 14 minutes Sullivan collected a ball from Andrew Westwood on the right edge of the box, he cleverly fed Joey Butlin who sidestepped his marker, Matthews just managing to push his low drive around the post. From the corner the ball was played back to Mitch Tolley to hit a low drive through a packed area to bring another full length save from Matthews. Four minutes later skipper Darren Campion charged down the left, his cross misjudged by a defender at the far post, going through to Lewis Hayden, Matthews making another full length save from his low drive. Three minutes later Till crossed from the left, Butlin cleverly chested the ball back for Tolley, his shot blocked by a brave defender. A minute later Sullivan was released through the centre, Shaun Keeley getting back to make a superb last ditch challenge.

On 25 minutes a misplaced header in centre midfield was seized upon by Dominic Strevens who from 25 yards hit a rising drive that bounced to safety off the bar with keeper Lloyd Ransome beaten.

A minute later Sullivan powered in from the left, played the ball into the path of Chris Slater, his rising drive tipped over at full stretch by Matthews. On 30 minutes Sullivan came in from the left, his low ball into the box causing consternation in the home defence as shot after shot was charged down, before Butlin saw his goalbound effort deflected just over the bar. Five minutes later Till won the ball wide left, scythed inside through three tackles before firing a low drive inches wide. Two minutes later Hayden wide right had two crosses charged down before he found Till on the right edge of the six yard box only for him to neatly flick the ball agonisingly wide. Right on half time Till crossed from the left, (Tony Clarke on for the injured Sullivan) flicked a header to the right, Butlin under intense pressure heading over.

Three minutes into the second half a poor clearance went to Tony Herbert 40 yards out wide on the right, seeing Ransome off his line he tried a cheeky lob that a fast retreating Ransome was relieved to see land on the roof of the net.

Two minutes later Till cut inside from wide left, his low drive finally beating Matthews only to bounce to safety off the foot of the left hand post. On 56 minutes a left to right diagonal run through the centre by Till ended with his low drive bringing another full length save from Matthews.

A minute later a forceful left wing run by Kevon Henry saw him cut inside, his low drive from the edge of the box blocked by Chris Slater as Wood realised they had to stay alert.

On 60 minutes Till and Campion ripped open the home defence wide left, Till’s rising drive swinging wide of the right hand post.  four minutes later from a left wing corner the ball fell to Craig Deakin to fire a first time effort well wide. On 71 minutes Daniel Okojie won the ball on halfway before finding Till wide left, he again cut inside, tiring defenders unable to close him down and from just inside the box his low drive finally beat Matthews just inside the left hand post. Spartak weren’t given much chance of mounting a grandstand finish and it was Wood who finished on top.  Jordan Fitzpatrick seeing a shot blocked, Deakin hitting the loose ball high over the bar.  Clarke had a shot deflected for a corner and right on time a neat one touch move on the left of the box saw Butlin set up to fire in a low drive that was fittingly saved at full stretch by man of the match Matthews.

At times it wasn’t pretty as everyone waited for Spartak to run out of steam, but it didn’t happen as they still chased everything until the end, even when Wood did break through it was Matthews equal to almost anything Wood could throw at him.  Justice was however done in the end and it’s Wood who go into the draw for the next round on 23rd September.

Next up for Wood is a visit to Leicester Road next Saturday, can they make it seven league wins out of seven?

Bill Shaw

The Teams:

Barnt Green Spartak – Matthews, Wilson, Henry, Karanicholas, Bishop, Keeley, Moulton, Wyatt, Strevens, Herbert, Jones, Green, Wright, Redden, Prescod, Simms.

Walsall Wood – Ransome, Okojie, Campion (captain), Slater, McFarlane, Tolley, Till, Westwood, Sullivan, Butlin Hayden, Clarke, Birch, Fitzpatrick, Deakin, Faultless.

Well done lads – and thanks to Bill for yet another great match report from the supposedly retired ace reporter.

You just can’t keep a good man down.

Cheers to all, and remember, it’s all For The Good Of The Wood!

Papa Roach

From Clough Head, looking back on Tittesworth Resevoir and Roach Road. Yes, I rode that track to here.

Those who follow me on social media and in my everyday life will have spotted that I’ve had a bit of a rum old week this week, so everything is running behind – well, it was, but now I’m nearly caught up. One thing I’ve been meaning to do all week is post this ride gallery from last Saturday…

As September began, I had an instinctive feeling that we were probably going to get the last good day of the summer on Saturday 2nd September – don’t ask me how, I just felt it – so I did the only decent thing I could: Hopped on the bike at dawn and rode into the Staffordshire Moorlands and Peak District.

People have been asking me for more ride reports, galleries and cams so there’s a report and gallery here and ride cams from this outing will come soon. This one is for @theplastichippo.

I had spotted a road on the map from Upper Hulme on the A53 Leek to Buxton Road, that ran from the south end of the rugged outcrops known as The Roaches, over to the Dane Valley. It looked like a tough ride. It was, but it was very beautiful.

My route from Morridge (bottom right) to Wildboarclough (centre top). This is stunningly beautiful, rugged country I commend to anyone. Click for a larger version.

I rode out into Staffordshire, over Chasewater, then Longdon Green, Hanch, and wound through Armitage and up the B5013 and 4 to Uttoxeter, and then north to Denstone for breakfast; from there, Ellastone and up over Wootton to the Weaver Hills, one of my favourite spots.

Making good time, I hit Waterhouses and onwards up the ridge called Morridge to the viewpoint at Sheepwalk, overlooking the Roaches, then dived through Thorncliffe, crossing the A53 to Hulme and joined the lane I’d seen after tea and cake at the wonderful Roaches Tea Rooms.

The byway I’d found was called Roach Road, and had commanding views of the Tittesworth Valley and reservoir, and was a tough ride as it clung to the side of Five Clouds. Peaking at Clough Head, there was a ride on an unmade track and a long downhill into the Dane Valley at Bearda, from where I went again north through Danebridge, Wincle and Wildboarclough.

The road through Wildboarclough is quite flat until Bottom of the Oven, and then a last, punishing climb up Trentabank into the Macclesfield Forest, cruising downhill through Langley and Sutton Lane Ends into Macclesfield, and a train home. A great day.

I’ve been loving the long rides again this year, and this was tough; but gorgeous weather, a decent route and the best of the British countryside made it an utter, utter joy. Summer may have passed now, but I couldn’t have asked for a better finale.

Roach Road marked in red, upper centre right, overlooks the valley and Gun Hill, which I’ve ridden over many times. Click for a larger version. 3D map created with Geospacial. Click for a larger version.

So please excuse the lack of updates last weekend, I was out on my bike.

For more of this sort of thing, the 365daysofbiking journal is still running.

Costa Coffee in Brownhills is one year old tomorrow – come join the party!

There’s a party going on at Brownhills Costa this Saturday! Image from Tripadvisor.

Well, it’s been a whole year since the Costa Coffee franchise opened up in Brownhills and to celebrate the milestone, Barista Phoebe Bellingham has been in touch to let us know that there’s a party on all day tomorrow (Saturday 9th September 2017).

Phoebe said:

Hi, I’m Phoebe.

I work at Costa Coffee, Brownhills – as it is our first birthday down at Costa on Saturday, 9th September 2017, we would like to invite folk to join us for a little ‘party’ with little activities for kids and just a great time…

We’re raising money for the Costa Foundation, and we thought what better way to do it than a party?

We will be having a range of activities that are all suitable for families!

The Costa Foundation supports families in need and helps build schools and change lives for children in coffee growing communities across the world. All proceeds from the activities will all go to this cause as we are very involved with it down at Costa Brownhills!

Thank you for your time we appreciate it x

I personally really like the local Costa and particularly appreciate it being open late afternoon, and the staff are a friendly, cheerful bunch who make a good brew – so why not pop down there?

Thanks to Phoebe for letting us know and if you pop down why not take a few pics and share them on the blog? Comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

How they are related: Something Brewe-ing…

An image from an eBay sale of a familiar, but slightly different image. Click for a larger version.

Whilst trawling the great tat-bazaar yesterday, I noticed a regular um, ‘reproducer’ of historical images (the least said about that the better) had an interesting take on a common image of Brownhills High Street and William Roberts Brewery that used to be behind the Station Hotel – It would have been about where B&M is today.

The auction is here – note it’s a ‘Photo from an Edwardian Image’ – you’re buying a print of an existing image, not the original. This is happening a lot on eBay and nothing has changed in that respect since I wrote this article and also this one.

The image seems like an original scan by whoever made it of a cropped version of the following image:

Brownhillsoldphotogreyscaleb-6c56 copy

I’d guess it’s turn of the century, no later than 1915. On the left, Brewes bakery and the old Coffee Shop (later Plumber’s Paradise). On the right, The Station Hotel, and behind it, William Robert’s Station Brewery. I’ve never seen this image before. Image generously donated by Margaret Thompson – click for a larger version.

Note the lad on the extreme left holding something is in the right of the foreground group. In the auction image, the coffee shop is cropped out and the view up the high Street easier to see.

This image was beautifully cleaned up and restored by talented friend of the blog, Lisa Ashby a while back.

A classic image beautifully restored by the very talented Lisa Ashby.

As a guide to this picture, visible are the old coffee  shop on the corner of Lichfield Road (later Plumber’s Paradise), Brewes Bakery opposite, and a busy High Street with an assembled crew of interested kids. From the appearance I’d say it was taken between 1900-1910, and is a close relation of a much inferior card published by George Lewis.

This postcard, from Jan Farrow’s ‘Around Brownhills and Walsall Wood in old picture postcards’ is by George Lewis, and I’d say was the same photographer, on the same day.

I wonder what they did with the kids between the shots? This is an interesting illustration of the life and morphology of common historical images of areas we know. If you have a view on this, please do comment here or mail me: BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com. Cheers.

Concern about local bike thefts and shed burglaries – lock your stuff, people!

Please lock your bikes, but do think about it. I saw this clearly quite new bike at Lichfield Trent Valley a few years ago. Can you spot the deliberate mistake? Archive image from 365days.

I’ve been contacted by reader Amanda who’s concerned after witnessing a possible local bike theft in the past few days – she contacted the police and the incident was reposrted, but she’s concerned that this may be an ongoing issue together with shed burglaries and other opportunist thefts.

Amanda is worried that she sees many bikes left lying unlocked outside houses (and I do too – also lying on the ground outside shops, etc). – lock your bike. Even the cheapest, crapppiest lock will stop some scumonkey just picking it up and riding off. A decent lock can be a bit more but all locks work against the most casual thief.

Find out more about how to lock your bike here.

Brownhills Councillor Steve Wade kindly forwarded me the press release below last year; it contains good advice for locking and securing garages and sheds.

Please ensure you lock all your outbuildings, and secure your premises as best you can. Don’t leave valuables on view in cars, and make sure anything that could be used in a burglary – ladders, garden tools etc. – is securely stowed away.

If you’re offered cheap tools, car stereo equipment or gardening kit, think hard about where it might have come from, and by all means grub the people flogging them into the rozzers – the stuff is probably nicked. Next time, it could be your stuff they take.

Anyone with information on the recent spate of thefts is urged to contact West Midlands Police by dialling 101 or you can speak to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Community message from West Midlands Police

Weather forecasters are predicting a cold spell over coming days. So with this in mind it is unlikely that you’ll be rushing to get the tools or ladders out of the shed or garage. But are your belongings securely locked away?

With temperatures set to plummet it may seem a strange time to be issuing crime prevention advice about sheds and gardens, but Walsall Police has seen an increase in thefts from outbuildings. Therefore officers are keen to remind residents to lock everything away and freeze out criminals.

‘Gone are the days when a garden shed was full of items such as half-empty paint tins, surplus plant pots and a medium wave radio. They are now home to expensive electrical items, top of the range bikes and a whole host of other items on the wish list of opportunist criminals,’ said Sergeant Lee Nicholls.

‘It is important that residents see their shed or garage as an extension to your house and afford it the same levels of crime prevention.’

Officers are offering the below advice to keep gardens and sheds safe:

  • Put away all tools and equipment. Ensure sheds are locked when not in use.
  • Install outside security lighting which comes on automatically at dusk.
  • If you have a burglar alarm, extend it to cover outbuildings and sheds
  • Register your valuables for free on the national property database www.immobilise.com

Officers are increasing patrols in Pelsall and Rushall following reports of theft from sheds. If you see anyone acting suspiciously please contact officers on 101. Dial 999 if a crime is in progress.

Sergeant Nicholls added: ‘It may be the case that you haven’t even been in your shed since the summer so with this in mind we’d ask you to take a few minutes to check it is secure. In fact when officers have carried out patrols they have found a number of sheds unlocked and easily accessible.

‘Therefore we’re asking home owners to look at their shed from the perspective of a thief… does it look secure? Could security be improved?’

Visit www.west-midlands.police.uk for further crime prevention advice
