Chasewater Rangers Rant Winter 2015
Following the popularity of the previous issues, I’m posting here the Chasewater Rangers Rant newsletter for Winter 2015, and it’s rather good, I have to say – paper copies are available free from the Innovation Centre.

Snow blind
Here’s a quick ride cam for the people out there who enjoy them – I know Trevor in Aus will like this one, as where he is, they don’t get much snow.

Into White
It’s taken me a couple of weeks to edit this up due to being somewhat busy with other stuff, but it’s not worked out so bad. A ride from near Maquis Drive, on Cannock Chase, up over Rifle Range Corner, past the old Butts, down into Abrahams Valley and out onto the A513 at Seven Springs.

Falling steadily
I promise, this is the last one, but it was requested that I take some images within the borough. As usual, more on my 365daysofbiking journal. I escaped on Sunday afternoon, between 4 and 5pm, just as the day was dying. … Continue reading

Enchanting forest
Well, I made it. Yesterday, I cycled up onto Cannock Chase. Starting from Brownhills, I headed up to Chasewater – which was stunning – and on through Heath Hayes and Hednesford, up to Rifle Range Corner. The going at Chasewater was very heavy, and a fine, wet sleet was making it quite uncomfortable. Wrestling with turning back, I pushed on, and as the temperature dropped, the sleet turned to powdery snow and the air cleared.

The fastest thing on the road
Just before Christmas, I got hold of a new bike cam. It’s a GoPro HD Hero black edition, which has some pretty nifty features, including less distortion from the lens and better performance in low light. I’ve been using it … Continue reading

Urgent help required
There’s something of dire social importance going on in Walsall right now. It’s cold, and people are on the streets. In town, there are a group of people working to help the displaced, the lost and the lonely. Please help them all you can.

Driven like the snow
Today, we finally had some real winter weather. After the unseasonal warmth of Christmas, these last few cold, frosty, clear days have been a breath of fresh air for me. Yesterday, I watched the weather forecast hoping for snow. As … Continue reading

Opening out
Yesterday, I tried to think of something to write about the passing of the shortest day and winter solstice, but couldn’t think of anything better than I wrote on the subject last year. This is a really positive step for … Continue reading

People just don’t understand
Sorry for the brief hiatus in posts, I’ll post some more stuff this week. In the meantime, I’ve been enjoying the unexpected wintry blast perhaps just a little more than I ought to. Like Yehuda Moon, I get used to … Continue reading

From now, it only gets better…
Today is Winter Solstice – the shortest day of the year, the day from which the daylight steadily lengthens into a new year, and warmer, longer spring days enter on tiptoes. From this day, things only get better. Winter Solstice … Continue reading

Sometimes the darkness is your friend
At this time of year, as Autumn slides intractably into winter and the nights draw in, the nature of my cycling changes. Rather than the longer dayrides of the summer, I embark on shorter rides around more local haunts. The … Continue reading
