Temperance, even!
Sometimes, enquiries on the blog take a while to resolve – and this one is just such an example, and a good reason why one should never give up hope with finding answers, as you never know who’s passing.

It’s not Christmas without the cards
I’ve had this one in preparation for a while, and to paraphrase, it’s an absolute boster of a post – regular readers will remember with fondness Ruth Penrhyn-Lowe, who has previously sent scans of some remarkable postcards of Brownhills, a stunning large set of Aldridge, and another bunch from Aldridge and Stubbers Green – all of which were collected by her late father.

A welcome miscellany – which of these do you remember?
Facebook is really throwing up some gems at the moment – keen reader Maria Fitzgerald has sent me a bunch of varied images she’s found out of her family collection which I think will inspire debate and memories from readers – these are hot on the heels of the one she sent last week, that provoked so much discussion.

Let it bee
Reader and friend of the blog Stuart Cowley asked me if I’d plug this talk for him. It is, of course, a pleasure. Anyone who wants anything publicising, please do contact me.

Enchanting forest
Well, I made it. Yesterday, I cycled up onto Cannock Chase. Starting from Brownhills, I headed up to Chasewater – which was stunning – and on through Heath Hayes and Hednesford, up to Rifle Range Corner. The going at Chasewater was very heavy, and a fine, wet sleet was making it quite uncomfortable. Wrestling with turning back, I pushed on, and as the temperature dropped, the sleet turned to powdery snow and the air cleared.

Taking up the slack
Last March I posted an article featuring an image of the demonstration event for the ill-fated Merrie England project which reader Steve Hames had scanned from the book ‘Images of England – Cannock Chase’ by Sherry Belcher and Mary Mills. … Continue reading

Spot the difference
Whilst out and about, I’ve noticed the remarkable proliferation of new monuments to former mines and their workers. I’ve commented on the subject in several posts to this blog, in particular to what I see as the wastage on the … Continue reading
