New Hall Mill – A local, working watermill – open today

New Hall Mill is open again today (Sunday, 14th June 2015) for their Wild Flower Day and I can heartily recommend the place – it’s fascinating and I had a great time there last Bank Holiday Monday – not enough people know about this wonderful building.

A different slice of urban life

This is a followup to the ride cam I did a couple of weeks ago on National Cycle Route 535 down the Plants Brook/New Hall Valley cycleway, from Sutton to Tyburn – here I pick up the route from the Birngham and Fazeley Canal at Tyburn, and finish at Digbeth Junction in the city centre.

Flour power

Last Monday, I popped out on the overcast, grey afternoon and rode to New Hall Mill for their open day – this is the working flour mill reader Alan Dawson recommended to readers last weekend – I’ve fallen in love with this remarkable place.

Why not visit a local working water mill today?

Here’s a great example of how one post can lead to another via an unexpected tangent – and it’s really rather excellent.NHM26052014 (1) Continue reading

Valley views

Here’s a quick ride cam for the people out there who enjoy them, as I haven’t done one for a while – and I’m aware there’s a lot of interest in off-road cycle routes in the area, too, so I thought I’d share this one.

Snow blind

Here’s a quick ride cam for the people out there who enjoy them – I know Trevor in Aus will like this one, as where he is, they don’t get much snow.

Dropping off the edge

Here’s one for Trevor in Aus and all the folks who enjoy the ride cams. I’ve been meaning to do this one all week, and today’s postings fell victim to the festivities, so this is as good a chance as any, really.

A very Good Friday

Yesterday, Good Friday 18th April 2014, was a good day for a ride – with the day off and the sun shining (although not as warm as one would have thought), I headed out to Staffordshire to cath the sun and beauty of spring.
This yew was still waiting to lamb in Hints. Continue reading

Kingdom of rain

This video takes a journey homewards after work – I pick it up in Walsall Road, Darlaston, and travel through James Bridge, Alumwell and join the New Ring Road at the Rollingmill Street junction.

Inner Hays

Here’s another ride cam for all those who ask for them – including Trev in Oz, Rob Flodders and BillyTheBez – this one is edited, realtime bits of a mostly off road journey from Jerry’s Lane, near Weeford, up the bridleway that is Knox’s Grave Lane to Packington, then into the wonderful Hopwas Hayes Wood.tumblr_mss53rl8jJ1qib2vgo4_1280 Continue reading

Chasing the rainbow

I’m still, after several decades, exploring Cannock Chase – since getting wonderfully lost around the quarries near Bevin’s Birches last week, I’ve developed a thirst for spots I’ve not been before.P1070053 Continue reading

Back down the old Kit Bag

I had fun over Cannock Chase yesterday, exploring the area around Wolseley Plain and the old quarries near Bevin’s Birches – while there, I also cycled down Kitbag Hill, the sharp semi-road incline that forms part of Marquis Drive between the old RAF Hednesford and visitor’s centre and the old level crossing at Moor’s Gorse.

Coming down from above

Yesterday, on a borrowed mountain bike I headed out to Brocton Fied on Cannock Chase, and starting near the Glacial Boulder and trig point, I threw myself and the bike down into Sherbrook Valley, then followed the stream down to Stepping Stones.

Crossing the city

I thought it was about time for some more ride videos – I know many readers enjoy these, and a lot of the bicycle-curious wonder about cycling the canals in Birmingham city centre.

Tearing up the forest

Here’s a video I’m posting specifically for Rob Floders, who I know enjoys my cycle videos – Rob’s having a really tough time at the moment, and although I know a daft video can’t make anything better, I hope it makes him smile just a little.

Into White

It’s taken me a couple of weeks to edit this up due to being somewhat busy with other stuff, but it’s not worked out so bad. A ride from near Maquis Drive, on Cannock Chase, up over Rifle Range Corner, past the old Butts, down into Abrahams Valley and out onto the A513 at Seven Springs.

The fastest thing on the road

Just before Christmas, I got hold of a new bike cam. It’s a GoPro HD Hero black edition, which has some pretty nifty features, including less distortion from the lens and better performance in low light. I’ve been using it … Continue reading

Along for the ride

Just before Christmas, I got hold of a new bike cam. It’s a GoPro HD Hero black edition, which has some pretty nifty features, including less distortion from the lens and better performance in low light. I’ve been using it ever since I got it, but the weather and dull commutes haven’t been conducive to decent ride videos.

From one end to the other…

Cycling up The Wood

Into the valley

Posted over on my 365daysofbiking Tumblr journal, quite fond of this video, taken on and around Cannock Chase (my favourite Abraham’s Valley in particular) on Boxing Day. It’s take on a GoPro HD Hero 2, and recorderded in high-definition 1080p … Continue reading
