Do something rasher…
Readers of my 365daysofbiking journal will remember that last year, I was fascinated by the fine pigs being kept on the smallholding on the patch of land between the A5 and canal at Newtown, Brownhills.

Shut the wardrobe door!
Oh, my goodness – Narnia has escaped from the wardrobe again, and as ever, I’ve been out having fun The cycling was fine on main roads, but side roads and tracks were bad. The snow – falling gently all the time I was out – was being driven by a northeasterly surely crafted on Satan’s back doorstep.

Conundra arising
Right, you lot. I’ve had some interesting enquiries in recent weeks and rather than spin them all out, I thought I’d post three together and see what folk know about them. I know you mostly like a challenge, and flushed with the success that was the puzzle of The Grange from last week, everyone should be on a roll…

The western front
Some weeks ago now, I featured a British Railways Board plan I’d purchased from a map dealer, which showed the coal workings in the Yard Seam below Brownhills Common. At the same time, I bought the one featured here, too. … Continue reading

Before the motorway came through…
I’ve been contacted by blog reader Stuart Jakeman, who’s appealing for images of Brownhills West before the toll road came through. He’s also after any images we may have of the Pear Tree when it was still open. Can anybody … Continue reading

Alley cats
An interesting question comes in from reader Mike Leonard, about the Wilkin Estate and Brownhills West in the 1970s. I’m not a Brownhills West man, so I’m hoping readers from that part of town can help. I vaguely remember a … Continue reading

Whose Fault is it, anyway?
Here’s one for the Knaves Castle/The Fault/The Fort inquisitors out there. It’s been a while since I raided the mapping archives, so I thought I’d go rooting through the cartographic record, and see if I could find ‘The Fort’. Sadly, … Continue reading

I fort so…
Had a great email yesterday from Tony Turner, an ex-Brownhillian who’s now moved up north. I think this, coupled with the great work from Andy Dennis, pretty conclusively nails the question of ‘The Fort’, and it’s location. Hi Bob, I … Continue reading

Shenstone murder tragedy, 1929
I noticed there was some interest over this tragic occurrence shown by members of the Stonnall Local History group on Facebook in the last few weeks. Thanks to the efforts of Peter ‘Pedro’ Cutler, we have located the following two … Continue reading

I’ve just spotted this press release from West Midlands Police relating to an unpleasant incident at Brownhills West yesterday evening (Sunday 29th January 2012). Frankly, I’d have thought the winter chill would have put an end to the spate of … Continue reading

Another former pub goes up in smoke
After reporting the thankfully apparently minor fire that occurred at the long-closed Rising Sun pub in Brownhills West on Friday, 5th August 2011, it seems that conflagration in former hostelries is contagious. The following Sunday, 7th August 2011, the old … Continue reading

Changes to the A5 Watling Street – Chase Road junction

Way out west
Brownhills West has always been a small, self-contained community. I don’t feature it much here on the Brownhills Blog, which is a shame. Reflecting on that fact, for this pictures from the past feature, I thought we’d take a trip … Continue reading
