This just in from Walsall Police. If you can help, please do; people are seriously concerned for the lad’s welfare – searches are underway in Walsall to trace a missing 17-year-old who has not been seen for three days.

Walsall Councillor Tim Oliver: my condolences
I’ve just picked up from Social Media and the Pheseay Park Farm Labour Party blog thet Walsall Labour group Leader and Coucillor for Birchills-Leamore has sadly passed away following a period of illness – my condolences, and I’m sure those of readers, go out to the Oliver family, friends and party comrades.

Puddled
We have talked a lot recently about the Birchills Ironworks, Talbot Stead Tube Works (latterly Sterling Tubes), and have ruminated on the nature of metal bashing and other industry – in his initial perusal of The Graphic, Peter spotted the following article relating to metal production in Cleveland, and I think it’s worth a read.

An overwhelming sense of duty
Sister Dora is a beloved, dear heroine of Walsall; remembered long after her passing, she is a local heroine whose memory shines like a light in the grim, darkened industrial past of Walsall – her statue – finally restored to it’s rightful place on The Bridge, in the town centre – still sees regular laying of flowers and visits by those interested in the remarkable history it records.

The ever-changing skyline
I’ve had some fantastic contact recently with reader Wyrleyrob, who’s helped on a number of historical issues- he’s interested in the Birchills foundry/power station history, and has spoken to his friend, great local historian Jack Haddock – together, they’ve come up with some fine images which I can share.

Power to the people
I’ve had a couple of great responses to my request for material on Walsall’s lost power station that existed at Reedswood, until it’s demolition in the late 1980s.

Walsall planning appeal shock!
Readers may well recall the excellent article about the regeneration of the Reedswood power station site, written by top contributor and Brownhills bloke Andy Dennis. In it, Andy pointed out that further development of the site outside the council’s guidelines … Continue reading

I live where it’s grey
I hope readers will forgive me this week for featuring foreign parts in the ‘Pictures from the past’ feature. Whilst mooching around Flickr a couple of weeks ago, I came upon an absolutely stunning set of early eighties photo scans … Continue reading
