One little Spark is all it takes…
In the current economic and political climate, good news on public and community services is thin on the ground – so I was very happy to receive news of a wonderful followup to story I featured early this year.

Great news! Burntwood’s Children’s Centres saved for now
Here’s a really positive followup (and what looks at the moment to be a blog exclusive) to a story I featured a couple of weeks ago, when Esther Allen of The Chasewater Strollers parent and toddler group contacted me to publicise their petition against the planned closure of both Burntwood Childrens Centres – otherwise known as ‘Surestart’.

Clayhanger skate park gathers support
A few weeks ago, I featured the deeply impressive letter written by the (then) eleven-year old Matty Keating from Clayhanger, who is appealing for help to get a skate park for Clayhanger.

Important – help save Burntwood’s Children’s Centres
Esther Allen of Chasewater Strollers and Councillor ‘Aunty Sue’ Woodward have been in touch over the weekend to let me know that they’re very worried about the future of the two Children’s centres in Burntwood, and have launched a campaign and petition to keep them open.

Can you help Matty in his campaign for a skatepark in Clayhanger?
I’ve received an astoundingly impressive email from Matty Keating, who’s a young lad aged eleven from Clayhanger – like me when I was his age, he feels his age group are not being well catered for in the village and he’s campaigning for a skate park.

Please sign the petition requesting pedestrian crossings for Shire Oak
Since the tragic, awful death of 12 year old Jack Garrington on the Chester Road, Shire Oak last Thursday, 10th April 2014, many Brownhills folk and parents of kids attending Shire Oak from further afield have not only paid tribute to Jack, but also want to join together to improve road safety in the area.

Pedestrian Crossings for Shire Oak – a campaign in memory of Jack Garrington
Following the tragic, heart-rending death of 12 year old Jack Garrington on the Chester Road, Shire Oak on Thursday, Brownhills has been in a state of shock – many locals have paid tribute to the young lad, floral tributes have been laid at the scene and it’s fair to say that a perceptible air of sadness has prevailed locally.

The gold hoard to arrive in Brownhills at last…
My apologies to top fellow and friend of the blog David Hodgkinson, as quite frankly, I forgot this one, and it’s quite important for Staffordshire Hoard fans and local historians alike. Continue reading

The money trail…
Yesterday, a story popped up on the BBC news that probably passed a lot of folk by in the blur of tinsel and turkey that is Christmas. I think this is worth pulling into the light. The plan for a … Continue reading

Pretzel logic
I noticed with wry amusement the letter from Gerald Bickley, of Brownhills Local Committee in the Walsall Advertiser last week. It’s interesting and welcome that we finally hear something from the somewhat somnambulant group apparently deeming to speak on behalf … Continue reading

I hoard it on the radio
Today, top local bloke Brian Stringer (that’s the Clayhanger Kid, you know) had a slot on the Phil Upton show on BBC Radio WM. Going out at the ungodly hour of 7:20am, I doubt many hereabouts were sufficiently caffeine-infused to … Continue reading

Interesting proposal for Staffordshire Hoard fans
I notice an interesting proposal has been put forward from Brownhills Blog reader and Clayhanger Kid Brian Stringer, to erect an information point near to where the Staffordshire Hoard was found in Brownhills. This doesn’t sound like a bad idea … Continue reading
