Millfield School needs you!
You’ll all know I’m keen to support local community organisations, clubs and schools where I can – such things are vital to the social life of the town and help folks get together and make things better for all of us.

Plea for family of deceased Darlaston man
We seem to have had a lot of appeals in the last few months to trace the family of local deceased people – but I make no apology for running another one; these appeals are essential, and I really feel for anyone who passes away alone.

Michael Syrett: Funeral arrangements announced
Way back on the 13th August 2014, I published a very sad appeal from the Walsall Council Environmental Health Team who were attempting to locate any remaining family of retired Darlsaton teacher and musician Michael Syrett, who died a few days earlier – sadly, no relatives were located, and the council has now released details of Mr. Syrett’s funeral.

Important appeal: Did you know Michael Syrett?
This is one of those requests that pops up from time to time, and was issued by the Communication Team at Walsall Council last Wednesday, August 13th 2014 and I’d like all locals to have a think about it, and if any of you can do so, please help.

The displaced
The more I look at the question of Second World War evacuees in the area, the more I am astounded and puzzled by the matter – a search of the newspaper archives reveals that we absorbed huge numbers of folk, not just children – this has been a revelation to me.

Walsall Wood 1911, before and beyond
This article is the fourth – and final (at least until the 1921 census comes out…) part of blog reader, commentator and top contributor David Evans’ ongoing project to chart the growth of Walsall Wood just over a century ago. The first, second, and third instalments in the series have been published in the last two months, and generated quite a bit of debate and interest.

Walsall Wood, 1881. A melting pot…
This is an effort to chart the growth of Walsall Wood, towards the turn of the last century. At this time, the village was growing; the expansion (I hesitate to use the word ‘wealth’) that this created shaped the community … Continue reading
