The forgotten Coventry bombing that blew a Walsall Wood bricklayer off his feet
An additional piece followed the original article I featured by John and Paul Anslow last week, on the subject of Walsall Wood and Pelsall wartime air raids – this one is about an IRA attack in Coventry right before the war that appears to have been all but forgotten.

Avoiding the Red Caps with the permission of Captain Palmer
It’s always a joy to feature articles here by the wonderful Anslow brothers; over the years John and Paul have contributed so much to our local history knowledge, from everyday but special weddings, to sneaking into fetes and even recalling lost Pelsallian ice ream vendors.

The darkness of those days
Mindful of the day and occasion, regular contributor and blog stalwart Peter ‘Pedro’ Cutler wrote to me with an interesting couple of things to check out relating to the Second World War and Birmingham – I wasn’t aware of either, and they’ve been eye-openers, to be quite honest. Continue reading

Sand in the machinery
More great stuff on the saga of tank testing in Shire Oak Quarry. Hot on the heels of contributor David Oakley, Steve Hickman has obtained another great account from Ron Harris, a member of his family. A big thank you … Continue reading

Tanking along…
The question of tank testing in Shire Oak Quarry is ongoing. I’ve received a large number of fine contributions from David Evans, not least this email communication between him and the Tank Museum…. From: David Evans Sent: 26 September 2011 … Continue reading

Digging for victory
Here’s a quick one from top bloke David Evans relating to the tank testing alleged to have occurred at Shire Oak during the Second Word War. He’s kindly contacted Len Jones, of the Gentleshaw Sand & Gravel co. (Hence Jones … Continue reading

The quarrymen
This is a bit of a delicate one, as I’m aware this might be treading on memories, but the veracity of this particular local legend is intriguing me. In the pub last night, discussion fell to the tale that during … Continue reading
