Reader and dedicated local history sort [Howmuch] yesterday spotted this gem from the ever-expanding British Pathe News Archive. It’s newsreel of a powerboat race held at Chasewater in October, 1959 – and shows some wonderful footage of the lake, an apparent clubhouse I don’t recognise and some truly splendid facial foliage. Did you know any of the competitors? Were you there? This clip seems to come from another age and time entirely – as it should do really, it is five decades ago. There, I bet that made you wince…

The boats look very high tech for the period - but I suppose they must have been quite cutting edge.
