A short and sweet one reaches me from old pal of the blog Ian Broad, who at one time lived in the old, derelict bungalow that still (just) stands by the old access road to Shire Oak Quarry off the Lichfield Road at Sandhills – he sent in this great image of 1982 Shire Oak School leavers near the Royal (Middle) Oak pub on Shire Oak Hill.

This is sure to bring back some memories – can you name anyone in this remarkable photo? The cut off denims. The trousers. You can feel the atmosphere.
Ian, of course, shared the history of the old bungalow at the driveway to Shire Oak Quarry, on the A461 near Sandhills, and has since elaborated on it in articles here and here, and also of the story of Tom’s Cabin, his father’s shop in Brownhills High Street.

What a fab photo! This was the heard that I left Shire Oak too and there are a few familiar faces there! The lad talking to him was Doug Foden and the lad on the wall with his arm around the girl Darren Appleby. Kim Luke in the background with the blonde skinhead. This has bought back some great memories! Cheers!

Different memory, but five years previously, we had no trouble getting in a couple of lunchtime rounds at the Middle Oak, but were greeted at school by Mr Billington commanding “Out! Out!” and making shooing gestures. There ended our grammar school careers. Andy

I’m not a hundred percent certain, but the lad on the far left may be Richard Norris. A little after my time but I played rugby with Richard a few years after this photo was taken. I may have been in the “Middle” when they got thrown out. 🙂

Hi Jane, sorry it’s not me was down the Anchor 🙂
At that time no one over the age of 18 drank in the Middle Oak.
From what I remember on leaving school on the friday,rumour had got to us to avoid the Middle.
Therefore a large group of us spent the lunchtime in the Anchor beer garden and a very drunken lunchtime followed.
I seem to remember most of the fifth form ended up in the Anchor,and a fair few of us in the Cut..

Very weird seeing these faces. I know it’s an old post but I just stumbled across it.
I was at school with all of these too. The only people I’ve met from school since then are Doug Foden years ago I boardwise, and Steve blower when he used to drink in the bush in Pelsall.
