Only humanist – in Walsall Wood!

The Boatman’s Rest, Walsall Wood – always a good pint. Image posted on Flickr by Tim Jenkinson.

Here’s a quick plug for something I missed due to it landing in my spam folder, but which I think will be interest to many readers here – little did I realise, but the local Humanist group regularly meet at the Boatmans Rest pub, Walsall Wood High Street.

Old pal of the blog, Charles Street let me know about the group and meeting schedule – and the fact that’s it’s completely free to attend.

If you’re interested in philosophy, the nature of what we believe and accept, this could be a great evening with like minded people.

Hi Bob

I wonder if you’d be kind enough to give a mention to our Humanist group on your blog?

I’m a member of Humanists UK, and also a member of the local Humanist group (LWASS – Lichfield Walsall and South Staffs) Humanists –  we hold a meeting every quarter for those interested in Humanism, Atheism, Secularism and related subject areas.

We meet on the 3rd Wednesday every quarter – January April July and October at 7:45pm-ish until 9:45pm-ish for those interested in Humanism and related matters.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday July 17, 2019 – venue: The Boatmans Rest, 20 High Street, Walsall Wood, Walsall, West Midlands WS9 9LP.

At the moment there are around a dozen of us that meet up and have a general chat about Humanism – we’re looking for new people to come and add to the discussion.

P.S. there is no membership fee – anyone that’s interested just come and join in. We have a diverse range of members, and from all colours of the political spectrum. – If you’re interested come and say hello – we are really nice people!!

Our local website is:  lichfieldhumanistgroup.webs.com   If you’d like to know more about Humanism in general, have a look at the Humanists website  https://humanism.org.uk

Regards Chas

If you pop along to the next meeting in July, please drop me the word and tell me how you got on – the Humanists have a whole bunch of stuff going on and their website above is worth a look: I’ve always been a big fan of Birmingham Sceptics in the Pub who post some very interesting, thought provoking stuff on social media.

Tell me more: Comment here, mail me on BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com or tug my coat on the antisocial media.

Update to Humanist Meetings in Walsall Wood:

    Hi Bob,

Would you be kind kind enough to put the following on your blog, as we don’t want anyone turning up at The Boatman’s Rest for the July meeting.

Please see the message below from our local co-ordinator. The Boatmans Rest has converted the meeting area that we were using to a new restaurant. So as per below, Lichfield Walsall and South Staffs humanist group will be venue-less for the July meeting. As soon as I get any news I will update you.

    Cheers

    Charles

    Dear All

You may recall at the last meeting that our current venue was thinking of converting the room we use into a restaurant. This has now happened and so at the time of writing we are venueless for July. We are investigating venues, but if anyone knows of a pub (or similar location) in Walsall that would be happy to allow us to meet for a quiet chat/meeting in a quiet room midweek at no charge (very important) other than purchases we might make (hence pub) let us know. Next update closer to our meeting date soon.

  4. Hello Bob
Our previous venue has been turned into a restaurant thus making our usual meeting impossible.

We have investigated alternate and for the time being at least it will be the The Walsall Arms – 17 Bank Street, WS1 2EP.

The pub itself does not have on site parking but ample on street parking nearby. It is within easy walking of Walsall Town Centre and public transport. It has the advantage that it has projection facilities and as soon as we have understood the projection logistics we can show films for discussion.

So sorry, not quite Brownhills, but a suburb of Brownhills, nonetheless.

However if you are enjoying the debate you can stay till closing time if you like.

We have also reached the conclusion that we can no longer edit our existing website. Despite attempts to contact the current providers, Webs, they no longer offer any practicable support and so that is being re-designed and will be republished asap.

  5. An update.
We are pleased to report we can now, once again update our website through Webs. So any disparaging comments we may have made about their failure to support long term users of their service are now withdrawn and are to be replaced with heaps of praise. At least until they drop us in it again.
However what we cannot do at the present time is meet in person with Covid 19 waiting in the wings and we have had to (hopefully) temporarily suspend out physical meetings at the wonderful Walsall Arms. So we have done what many have done and that is go to online meetings using Zoom. Full details on our website or email us at walsallhumanists@live.co.uk
