A quick puzzle…

From Reg ‘Aer Reg’ Fullelove – what the devil is this object?

Hmm – I might be being wound up here, so I proceed with caution – but David Evans sent me this image yesterday of something belonging to Reg Fullelove – and they’re asking readers what it actually is, and what it’s used for.

I genuinely don’t have a clue. It’s actually a lot larger than I imagined at first glance – over six inches (no sniggering at the back) – and seems to be brass.

Any ideas please? Comment here or mail me – BrownhillsBob at Googlemail dot com.

I seriously have no idea so I’m relying on you lot to help me here…

    Hi Bob,

It’s a Button Stick, used to put behind buttons on uniforms to keep the material clean when polishing the buttons. Can also be used when cleaning badges.

  2. Not sure but having done work that requires repeating a design, it looks like a template for cutting a contour. Out of what and why I know not. Not really helped at all have I!

Tina Benon is spot on – my son has one, he’s a lifeguard (Royal Horse Artillary rather than the swimming pool variety) in the British Army

Button stick used by military to protect the uniform when polishing buttons

  6. morturn says:

Yep, ill go with button stick, my dad (WWII army) had one and told me about it.

  7. Denise austin says:

The brass item is to put over buttons , so you can clean them , especially brass buttons.

  8. John Anslow says:

Agree about it being used in button cleaning; I still have one somewhere in a tin of odds and ends, but mine is just a plain rectangular sheet of brass with a slot cut up the centre, none of the indentations round the edges. Is this the deluxe model, or has it been modified for some other purpose?

  9. David Coldicott says:

Item belonging to Reg Fullelove I think was a bit of army kit used to protect uniform when polishing / cleaning uniform items. For eg buttons were slotted onto the plate, polish applied and any overspill would go onto the plate and not onto the uniform.Any help?David Coldicott
