A wonderful evening

Brownhills Methodist Church – scene of a remarkable event. Picture by Facade66 on Panoramio.

I’ve just had an email from David Evans, who did such a fine job of organising and hosting Gerald Reece’s talk on Brownhills this evening at the Methodist Church Hall in Brownhills.

David and I would both like to thank all those who turned out – what was apparently in excess of 100 people – but none of it would have been possible without the generosity of time and spirit of the wonderful, entertaining and fascinating Gerald Reece.

Just by pitching up and showing an interest in our communal history, £520 was raised for Macmillan Cancer and that is a very fine thing indeed. That doesn’t include a private, separate and welcome donation pledged by a reader in remote parts.

This is what community interest, exploration and involvement can do. Thanks to everyone, the Methodist Church for being such good hosts, the folks doing the refreshments and David for his tireless work in getting this thing going.

Thanks, Brownhills. You showed you still have great community spirit tonight. Wonderful.

I look forward to Gerald continuing his quest and seeing the results. He really is a most remarkable man. Thanks, old chap.

  1. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the room. Gerald’s talks were riveting, and David deserves a great big medal.

Many thanks to David for organising the event, I’m sure he was pleased with the outcome.

Gerard’s talk showed the enormous amount of work he has done concerning the local history of the district, and I think the best tribute has already been given to him by the large number of people that turned up to listen on such a cold night.

And of course Gerald acknowledged BrownhillsBob’s Blog, and what better tribute than to have the “missing chapter” published on the Blog for us all to see!

An evening full of “interesting facts” about brownhills, me and my dad enjoyed it a lot and it certainly was eye opener to learn so much about our town. The part of James Brindley paying a visit to brownhills all those years ago suprised me indeed. Well done to all involved it certainly was a great success. Looking forward to the next one!

I’d say a great success- Gerald gave a great talk, and the runout was fantastic- and that’s a great figure to have raised. Big thanks to David, Gerald and everyone else involved.

A very interesting evening. Nice to find out that Brownhills originated in Coppice Side, Where I was born, (but not in those days I hasten to add) Thanks to Gerald and David for an interesting and informative evening.

So wish I could have been there, feeling quite nostalgic towards my hometown as I’m getting older, and I can’t get enough of the history of the area – funny really because I couldn’t wait to move away when I was younger and I hated history at school. Keep up the good work Bob and all those of you who contribute to this wonderful site, its keeping my appetite for history going..
