See you up the Poppy Road?

Here’s a heads up for something remarkable I was planning to visit last weekend, but sadly tragic events took over – I will however be visiting in the coming days, and I commend all to go and see this remarkable Remembrance project.

Station Road in Aldridge has been turned into a veritable festival of the poppy, all in aid of Remembrance and the 100 year centenary of the Great War. Those excellent people from the Aldridge Great War Project, community volunteers, historians and miles and miles of wool from keen knitters and crochet crafters have come together to create something utterly stunning.

There is no fee to visit. Just walk station road yourself and take the air, and reflect on the huge price communities like Aldridge and our own paid though war and service to their country.

Old pal Linda Mason has visited this wonderful thing in recent days and written a couple of excellent blog posts with huge galleries of which you can see the first by clicking here and the second one by clicking here.

You can find out more about Poppy Road and the Aldridge Great War Project at their Facebook page here.

I will be attending Poppy Road as soon as I can. I don’t want miss this.

There will be more from the wonderful Linda Mason on the matter of local war history  in coming days, and of course, I’ll be compiling the live list of Remembrance events which should be out overnight tonight, and I’ll be doing other Remembrance themed posts to mark this important weekend.

Hi my name is Valya Roberts and in one of your previous articles you talk about my grandad Tom Sedgewick who was the CO of your cadets and was in WW2 and from Brownhills. I was wandering if I could get some information and a copy of the picture you posted last year Of him receiving a medal in an article on the history of the Military in Brownhills.

My husband and I had a walk along today and it was very moving. The number of houses that had sons serving was amazing – really brought home the scale of involvement and loss.
Well done to the organisers and people taking part. A wonderful community effort.
