I still have a little of the very popular Mavis Woodhouse material to come – so far we’ve had the Foxes Row and Victor Haines articles, the Fred Shingler film of Newtown, Mavis’s recollections of the mining history, the curious disappearing cottage, and memories of Sunday School in the small community on the Watling Street.

Castle Street party at the Coronation in 1953, with the local residents wearing unusual fancy dress for the occasion. “The Fault” is the steep slope seen in the background. This physical feature was originally a sandhole cut in to the slope which leads down to the canal and the top of the sandhole was used by Lichfield Rural District as an ash tip at one time. I think my Mom Iris Poxon nee Lydall is on the Castle st , street party photo, it looks like her anyway. She married Frank Poxon who was born and bred in Castle st. Mavis knows us all very well. My dads parents were Bertha nee Hemmings and Frank Poxon. They had 4 children, Marie, Bertha, Cis and Frank. Our relatives are also Levi Poxon who also lived in Castle St. My Mom and Dad started voluntary, Brownhills young citizens club which later became Brownhills Youth club . they taught the kids Country dancing which my dad learned from a book and my mom made the costumes for the girls. I know Reg Hollick now passed away and a big friend of Mavis’s was in the club along with Peter green. I have a photo of them some where and the minutes of the first few meetings, wriiten by my dad. Dad then went onto to serve on Brownhills Memorial Hall committtee with Mavis, and then in the 50’s, 60’s my grandad Charlie Lydall was caretaker at the Memo, in the days of The Police Ball, and court sessions there. I started Old Time dance lessons there with Mrs Stokes and for my sins I am know Treasurer at The Memo !! So The Memo and Castle St are very dear to my heart. Julia Willett nee Poxon

I would love a copy of the photo. I remember your dad and Mr Lord well. I still see Yvonne Dunn at Memo meetings. I found my dad’s minute book from when he and mom ran The Young citizen club, all voluntry work before Brownhills Youth centre opened, which was of course paid work. xx
