1444 Squadron Air Cadets at summer camp, late sixties

Just had this cracking email from top contributor Steve Hickman, relating to Friday’s piece about the 70th anniversary request for photos and information relating to 1444 Squadraon Air Training Corps in Brownhills. Steve is a star, and I never cease to be amazed at the stuff he turns out for the Brownhills Blog.

Steve wrote the following:

Hi Bob,

In response to Tracy’s enquiry, see attached photo. Taken around 1967 or 1968 it is a group picture of 1444 squadron ATC at its summer camp at either RAF Lindholme or RAF Ouston. I remember watching Vulcans doing touch and goes. We had a great time.

Far Left officer is P/O Jack Moffat. Back row third from right Steve Hickman. Front row kneeling third from left John Hill. Can anyone fill in any other names?

 Regards

Steve

Well, it’s over to the readers again. Can anyone help fill in the blanks? I’m as pleased as punch that we’ve already got a great photo and accompanying information – let’s see what else we can turn up.

Thanks again to Steve, who has contributed so much wonderful material to this blog. You’re every bit the star, old chap.

I was in the Penkridge Squadron from 73 to 76 and I recognize the WO and a few of these faces… I have a feeling that it must be later than 68?

    Hi Dave B,

It was definitely 1967 or 1968 and I desperately wish I could remember a few more of the names. Mostly I just remember the guy’s nicknames.

Fantastic, I have a similar image which I will post of my 1206 squadron Lichfield 1968/69. I went up there twice and ended up staying for 6 months after leaving school. Many memories of training manoveres including all night, and most of all my training flights in Gliders/Chipmunks/Jet Provosts. My most memorable was when a squadron of Lightnings came in and I flew in 1 the next day, those were the days.

This is a great photograph i have never seen before.Names that i remember on this photograph. Left hand side standing P,O Harry Moffett, C.W.O. Alan Powell 3rd from left hand standing (used to live in Castle Street) first on the Right hand side is A.W.O. Jack Fox, standing. I recognize many of the lads in the photograph as i was also an adult W.O at this time on 1444 Squadron. Try “Reg Walker” for more names on this photograph as he was also a cadet on the squadron at this time.
