A place to dance, play and talk
rownhills, it’s sometimes hard to believe, has a great history of clubs, societies and recreation, particularly in the early part of the last century – we’ve looked here before at sports days, musical clubs and festivals, amateur dramatics and other pastimes, many of which couldn’t have occurred without the great facility that is Brownhills Memorial Hall.

Stuck in there real good, that is…
Some weeks ago I raised the story of the football stuck in the decorative cross on the roof of St. Michael’s Church in Caldmore, Walsall – last weekend, twitter top bloke and all round good egg @BillytheBez answered my plea and took a couple of pictures, confirming the decades-old ball was still lodged firmly where only birds and steeplejacks dare.

Pride of the Wood – good luck, lads!
Walsall Wood Football Club today play Guernsey FC away, in a re-run of the match last week at Oak Park that ended in a gripping stalemate 0-0 draw. Walsall Wood have generally been on a bit of a winning streak lately, and beating the boys in green is not an impossibility.

An epic battle unfolds
Well, The Wood lads did well yesterday, and held the posh chaps from Geurnsey to a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes of what was, by all accounts, tense, entertaining football. Our roving sports correspondent, young David Evans, had this to say:

Good luck to Walsall Wood FC
Andy Roper from Walsall Wood Football Club has been online drumming up support for the club’s upcoming match against Guernsey FC. Our small local team have been on a bit of a winning streak lately, and by all accounts this promises to be a bit of a David and Goliath epic, and I’m sure everyone in the Midlands is behind the boys from Up The Wood.

When the fighting stopped
Earlier in the year, reader and friend of the blog David Evans suggested I run an article about the truce at Messines over Christmas in 1914. This outbreak of humanity in the midst of one of the bloodiest wars the world had ever witnessed, captured the popular imagination for years. The idea of opposing sides downing weapons and joining in a game of football in no man’s land is enchanting and solid, and has featured in many forms of pop culture – from rock music videos to films and books.

The boys were back in town
Here’s a quick one for the Walsall Wood contingent: Specifically the fine lads who were members of the local Boys Brigade. They held a reunion back in March, I think at Walsall Wood Football Club. I’ve been supplied this picture … Continue reading
